Right now you’re probably focused on
puppy training skills and stopping problem Behaviors. But when you understand what we’re
about to show you and you start taking Advantage of these natural
training opportunities, You’ll begin to see that your puppy wants
to listen and they start making better Choices. The reality is you’re missing five
puppy training opportunities that happen Every single day. And instructor Steve
is about to change that. I’m Ken Steepe, And welcome back to McCann Dogs. One of the biggest struggles that people
have when it comes to training their Dogs, to want to listen to them is not
actually the training they’re doing, But it’s the training
that they’re not doing. And it’s those missed opportunities that
are gonna make the biggest difference In your training, whether it be for
a young puppy or for an older dog, Listening to you starting
first thing in the morning, You can change the way your dog’s day
goes and really help improve their listing Skills. Overall. Now let’s pretend
it’s first thing in the morning here. I’ve got little five alive
in his crate ready to go, And he needs to go out to go to the
bathroom. Now, oftentimes we would come, We’d grab the leash. He’d need to
go outside. He’d drag us outside. He’d drag us through the
door. He’d go pee. Well, There’s a lot of training that
can be done in this short time. That’s gonna help set up his listening. And the first thing starts before
I even open the crate door. All this teaching starts now that I’m
about to take five out to the bathroom. I need to open his crate
and I need to get him out. But if I just let him bust out
of his crate and have a party, There’s a couple of things that happen.
A He’s running the show. And he learns. When I open the door, he gets to
charge around and do whatever. And second of all, then I’m chasing him.
I’ve just reinforced his doing that. So here’s how I’m gonna change it. I’m gonna start by simply opening
the crate a little slowly. And I want him to show a little
bit of self-control good. Now I’m gonna be calm with
him. He is calm right now,
But I guarantee as soon as I open this
crate, he’s gonna get fairly excited. All of my goal is for right now
is that I can open the crate. He remains inside while I reach in
and hook on a leash. Good. Good boy. Hi buddy. Now. Good. Now he
tries to creep out a little bit, So I’m just gonna bring my hand in there.
Just sort of calmly hold him back in. Good boy. That’s better. Good.
I’m giving him some calm pats, I talking to him calmly. And I also have a hold of his collar
because I need to have great control. Now. He is pretty excited. I’m calmly
holding. I’m gonna get a leash on, But I’m still not gonna let
him out, once the leash is on, Cuz I want him to start, turn to
learn a little bit of self control. So I’m simply gonna clip my leash on
calmly and I’m actually gonna close the Door again. Good boy. Good
job. Excellent bud. Now, Because I have control. I
can start to open the gate. I’m gonna open the gate of the crate.
Good boy. Yes. Now he chose to lie down, So I’m gonna praise him and I’m
gonna open that door a little more. I’m gonna reach in and give him a
little pet. Good boy. Good job. Good. And as long as he stays in that crate, I’m gonna talk to him calmly and
open the door a little bit more, But the moment he starts to come
out, I’m simply gonna close the door. I’m not scolding. I’m not mad
at him, but this is setting up. You need to wait for my permission to
come out. This is the training part. Good boy. Good. Excellent.
Now I’m gonna do this, A little quicker now because
I want to talk to you guys, But I also want him to be right. I
don’t want him to make a mistake. So this time I’m gonna open up. And
as long as he holds that position, I’m gonna tell him, okay. And
give him permission to come out. But it’s not a free
for all. At that point, I’m actually going to ask him to sit. So
I’ve got some treats here, ready to go. Because I want to, again, set up a
situation where the moment he comes out, His world is paying attention to me and
I’m gonna make it valuable for him to Pay attention to me. So I’m gonna get
a couple of treats over here. Good boy, Buddy. Good. I’m gonna open the
crate. Good boy. Excellent job. Okay. Here bud. Sit. Whoopsie.
So he’s decided to go to that
little piece of food on the floor, Whatever that is over there,
but having a leash on, Prevented him from going somewhere
else and rehearsing that. Now I’ve lured him into
a sit whoopsie sit, bud. And because he is still a baby poppy, I’m gonna just continue to feed him
and help him. Hold that sit position. Good boy, buddy. Now he’s getting
a little excited sit. Good sit. So giving him another job to do is my
goal right now. Excellent. Good job. Now that I’ve got a little control, I’m gonna give him permission
and we’re gonna move. But again, It’s not gonna be a free for all out
the door. It’s gonna be very controlled. Okay, bud with me let’s work
our way to the door. Good job. So now that we’re outside, I’ve
still got his leash attached. I’m gonna take him out to the place that
I want him to go to the bathroom and I’m gonna be boring. I’m gonna
encourage him to go to the bathroom. I’ve got my leash so that he can’t
wander off and have a little party on his Own, But I’ve also got some rewards with me
because I’m going to the moment he does Go to the bathroom, Do a little bit of work and teach
him to work for some things. This is another great opportunity
to take advantage of. Yes. Good boy. Good pee. Good job. Excellent
boy. What a good job. Now I mark with my, yes, The moment he started to go to the
bathroom and that’s one of those training Opportunities. I want you to take
advantage of because, hi buddy. He needs to know that that’s exactly
what I want him to do at that moment. Now you’ll notice that I
didn’t actually feed him. I don’t want my dog to associate the
physical movement of crouching to pee with A cookie. I wanna praise him. But the simple fact of going to the
bathroom is enough reward for him and that Release. So it’s important that I
praise him, but I’m not gonna feed him. But now his mind says it’s time to party. And this is the opportunity that
gets missed. I now am outside. I’ve got a dog that I know
has gone to the bathroom.
I’m gonna do a little teaching. So we’re gonna work on a little response
to name. I’m gonna get my treats out. I’m gonna let Five, get a little
distracted. When he looks away from me, I’m gonna call his name and then lure
that response. What’s over there, buddy. What’s over there. Five. Yes. Good boy.
Hurry. What a good puppy dog. Excellent. Good job bud. Good. Maybe I move over
here. Good job. Well, what’s over there. What’s over there. Good.
Excellent. Good boy. Good boy. Yes. Now why did I yes this particular
situation. Well, he’s offering me focus. I haven’t asked him to,
but I’m moving in a manner. That’s exciting to him off bud.
And if I acknowledge that, yes. Good boy. He’s gonna start to realize that paying
attention to me is much more valuable Than the world around him.
So I’m gonna move again. We’ll see if he gets distracted. I’m gonna be a little patient with this
cuz he’s a pretty focused guy right now. Five. Yeah.
good job. Now as we go back inside, There’s a couple of things
that I wanna make sure I do. I don’t want five
pulling me into the door. I don’t want him thinking he can run
around and have a party. So again, In between training, I’m
gonna do more training, Which is simply Luing him with me.
Good boy. Yes. Good job. Excellent. As we move, building more value for me
while there’s no tension in the leash. And as I get to the door, I’m also gonna
add one little extra step and that is, I would like him to sit
before we go inside. I wanna make sure he has
a little self-control and
understands that you don’t Barge through the door. You simply hold position until give
him permission now much like the crate. Hi buddy. I’m not gonna open the
door and let him bust through. I’m actually gonna open
the door a little bit, But I’m gonna reward him for maintaining
the sit cuz I wanna make sure he Understands. He needs permission
to go through the door. Hey buddy. Let’s just right here. Good,
good, good sit. Yes. Good. Now I open the door a teeny little
bit, just a crack. He’s a baby puppy. And I want him to see that little motion
in little bits and pieces now because
He is also baby puppy
and he is also not mine. He doesn’t really know how to sit with me. So I’m simply luring him back into the
sit depending on the stage of your dog. You may just tuck him back into his
sit. Sit. Good. Sit. Yes. Good boy. Good sit. I’m gonna take a little
shift towards the door. Good sit. Lots of rewards for holding position and
when I’m good and ready put some food In his nose. Okay. And we’re
going through the door. Now. All of this work seems
kind of tedious to do, But these are the things that people miss. We need to take our dogs
out to the bathroom. We need to be able to get that
done. Get ourselves ready for work. And then we wanna train our dogs. Well, I just did all this training in two
minutes that I was gonna spend anyway. So it’s really important
that you focus on this. Now my next step is I’m in the house now
and I’m ready to work a little bit more Training here, But I’m gonna change from my outside
training leash to my house-line cuz I know Anytime my pup’s outta their house,
I want outta their can lie, buddy. I wanna make sure that they
have a leash or a line on, So I’m gonna work my sit again. And this skill is one of the biggest
things that I like to focus on with my Dogs, not the sitting part, But the him sitting him sitting calmly
while I take a leash off his collar. Hi bud. And I clip it on the
other one. Okay. Off bud. So he’s jumping on me. He’s a little
excited. I’m gonna work my sit. Good job. Sit bud. Good sit. Good boy. Good
sit. I might move him a little bit. Sit cuz I want him to be a little bit
more successful right now. Good sit. Excellent. Yes. Good sit. Good boy.
I’m gonna reach for his collar. Yes. Good sit. Good boy. Even this act of him
sitting while I’m holding his collar. Yes. Is super important.
I don’t wanna think. Think him thinking that he can run away
and do whatever he wants. Sit good. Sit. Clip. The one leash on.
Yes. Good sit. Good boy. Maybe I let go of his
collar reward him again. He’s learning if I reach for the caller
to just hang out. Good boy. Excellent.
Yes. Good sit good. Whoops. You gonna up to the sit there now I’m
gonna take my leash off. Good job. I can put my leash aside now
he’s got his little house-line. Now I’m getting ready to do more training
while it’s feeding time at the zoo. And this is one of the other often
missed training opportunities. I’m gonna about to give
him a bowl of food, But I want him to show a little restraint
and wait for my permission to get that Food. So I’ve got him in his crate. I’m gonna open up our little
crate exercises good boy. Okay. Are paying off from before now.
All I want him to do is simply not, Not bumpy for the food. Now.
As long as he’s stationary, I’m gonna lower the food.
Whoopsie. Good try buddy. If he dress size to go before
I’m gonna offer it to him. I’m just gonna pick it
up again. Good try bud. Now I want him to just move a little bit. Let’s see if he offers me something
else. Good boy. Excellent. Very good. Good job bud. Very
nice. Yes. Okay. Get it. Good boy. I made him work through that and he
waited for my permission to have the food. Good dog training is all
