Training your dog or puppy comes with a lot of different challenges. Something people forget about is socialising their dogs as they concentrate too much on things like obedience but without socialising your dog correctly you are likely to create a dog that can be fearful of multiple different sounds and situations.

[Music] Socializing your dogs is of utmost Importance critical importance but what Actually is socialization and how do you Do it properly i’m will atherton i’m a Canine behaviorist and my goal is to Keep all dogs out of shelters and off The euthanasia table this dog has been Abused and neglected and has a wide Variety of behaviour problems because of It i’m going to foster him for seven Days and show you exactly what can be Achieved with loving leadership so when It comes to socialization the first Thing that you have to understand is That you must have realistic Expectations and the patience to take Things slowly and take baby steps Towards improvement now when you first Bring a new dog into your home which is What i had to do with my mate here is Start to assess potential triggers now Very quickly i found out that his Potential triggers are other animals Livestock in particular so we’ve been Doing lots of work out in the Countryside building up and building up His socialization towards livestock Sheep cows and birds but what i didn’t Do on day one is try and walk him Straight through a flock of sheep we’ve Been building it up slowly starting With being at a distance where he can See them
Starting to build up his concept and Understanding that even though there’s That thing that is triggering an Emotional response from you i need you To pay attention to me and look up to me For guidance and direction then as we Succeed we just take baby steps baby Steps and we move forward we move Forward until eventually we will get to A point where we can walk through a Flock of sheep and he’ll remain in this Beautiful loose lead here walking being In tune and engaged with me so we’re Furthering our socialization and we need To make sure that we’re socializing my Mate here to a multiple different Environments and environmental stimuli Today we’ve come out to the busiest town In our area we’re going to be walking Down the high street we’re going to go Into some dog friendly shops we’re going To go into a coffee shop have some Breakfast And it’s not all about letting him do Whatever he wants whenever he wants meet People that’s not the the importance of Socialization what we’re going to be Achieving today is being in high stimuli Environments but him understanding that He must remain calm but more importantly Look up to me for guidance and direction If he ever finds himself in a stressful Situation as opposed to lunging barking Becoming reactive pulling or freaking
Out that’s the essence of socialization I’m in charge as your loving leader and No matter what happens whatever you find Yourself in simply look up to me and I’ll take control and make sure Everything’s okay so this is a perfect Example of manners based training in Various different situations we’ve come Out this when we picked him up would not Have happened he was feral diving up Furniture climbing onto kitchen worktops Jumping up people if he can smell food But just with a bit of loving leadership We’re now able to bring him out to a Lovely coffee shop and he’s able to sit And hang out with us displaying Beautiful well-mannered behavior All right mate Isn’t that right you’re a good boy Which then takes us on to our next point Of socialization and this is what my Whole training system is built on and That is the understanding of the Fundamental the foundation that is Loving leadership if you can provide Loving leadership to your dog and have Your dog understand that you are in Control in any given situation and all They have to do is look up to you for Guidance and direction then Socialization becomes a million times Easier now as you can see we’re maybe 10 15 meters away from sheep which when i Collected him on sunday would have had
Him absolutely losing his mind and even Myself someone who’s big and strong and Quite comfortable managing large dogs Would have really struggled to keep him Safe now is he perfect at this point After four or five days no but is he Causing any issue no he’s still on a Loose lead he’s aware of them which i’m Fine with but he’s making good decisions And staying around me and following my Guidance and direction which is all i Could ever possibly ask of him now Because he’s deaf it poses different Challenges i now have to use little bits Of lead pressure just to communicate With him and guide him around i can’t do It verbally but as we practice this Built on the foundations of loving Leadership and building it up with those Small baby steps We’re able to make huge amounts of Success Really quickly aren’t we buddy yeah we Are So i hope you enjoyed this video guys i Hope you liked it if you did make sure You click the like button subscribe if You are new here we make videos like This every single week you can come say Hello on instagram there’ll be a link Down in the description box below and i Can’t wait to see you on the next video [Music]
