I do think that it's a her uh behavior Is a tiny bit learned I think if you can Make some changes I don't think it's Going to be hard to fix I think it's Going to be a Fast Fix based on what I'm Seeing I don't know if she's internally That upset about being in the crate I Think that she's learned that some of The behaviors that she does allows her To get out or gets attention welcome Back to McDonald's I'm Cale McCann and Today I'm doing a lesson with Effie and Her little uh dachshund puppy named Juno Which you said is 12 12 weeks old Um she's a little dachshund puppy but We'll probably call her a wiener dog in This video because it's much more Adorable Um but we're gonna be going over some Tips on how to make crate training a Little bit less frustrating for you and Your puppies now with the noise in the Crate there's again two things I could Do I could ignore it or I could Interrupt it so I could interrupt it by Using my voice first or I could use my Voice followed by something that's going To stop her from doing the behavior Which could be like a little bang on the Crate or something that's going to Interrupt hey hey hey Good girl that's better good settle Yes good subtle now she hasn't really Had a win so I'm actually going to
Choose to reward her now yes so this is Good and this is the what happens when We're doing with a private lesson it Would be great if I could just like okay Have you go in the kitchen we're going To work through this dogs don't work Like that we have to kind of go on baby Steps and unfortunately the speed in Which we go through these progressions Are completely depicted by Juno and how Faster house though we can do oh Good girl that's better now we have a Change in puppy but why do we have a Change in puppy she's interested in Treats that's right she's interested in Food so I didn't want to introduce the Food too early but I also don't need the Puppy to sit here and like be rehearsing Bad things for a really long time so hey Don't do that So I might choose to interrupt her She's losing steam a little bit though Yes better Yes good girl so to see how she sort of Like calmed yeah but there so I can Choose to yes and reward her good so one Of the main reasons why people are Really frustrated with crate training is Because typically puppies don't always Love their crate and they can show us That by screaming crying seeming very Upset and that can be heartbreaking at Times Um and that can either upset different
Family members or it can just sort of Make the flow of things a little bit More challenging because you know where You're always encouraged to use crates But if it's not really going pleasantly It's like trying to decide whether it's Worth it to do that or whether just let The puppy do their own thing which has Its own set of challenges so hopefully Today we can talk about a few things That can give you some projects or some Games to do with her so that she becomes A little bit more comfortable so that Crate training isn't stressful for her But most importantly it's not stressful For you as well so I want to get a sense Of kind of which games to share with you And which directions to go so can you Tell me a little bit about some of the I Don't want to say necessarily crate Training issues but what are the most Challenging Parts about crate training With her currently Um I would say settling her initially After putting her in yes Um I have to like sit there and like say Like it's okay calm down down she'll lie Down okay make sure she's settled before I start moving around okay is this Starting to drop it is this like a Certain time of day that this is Happening activity during the day if She's very sleepy and like we're Watching TV and we're using the
Ballistic and then she just settles down I can put her in the crate so she's Already calmer-minded okay exactly Um and at night she knows like that's Where she sleeps okay I will put her in Front of a crate she'll walk in and She'll sleep okay good she's good well That's a good start it's just leaving The room as soon as she can't see me That's when she starts maybe a little Bit of separation anxiety probably yep And then when you're using the crate um Are you using the crate at home during The day like for any extended period of Time or is she normally like out of her Crate Um I would say I focus on trying to get Her in the crate three times times a day Okay for no reason good that's great It's and are those there are those the Times that it's not going well though Yes okay okay that's what it's like a Five minute five minutes of whining and And then does she settle after that or Is it like you put her in for five Minutes she whines and then like yeah You're not making her stay in there Anymore no no she wants she settles and Then I go about what I need to do in That room and then she will settle after That yes okay but if I leave the room It's okay okay okay perfect that's good Sometimes when you're puppy training It's like a bit of like buttering the
Puppy up to kind of like what we're Doing and then we add the stressy stuff In so if I was like just put another Crate and like go right to like the hard Part of you leaving it's not necessarily Going to set her up for as much success So we need to let her have a little bit Of wins right now so I'm gonna give you The treats I want you just to show me Kind of what you normally do to get her In the crate and I'll either give you Some tips to kind of progress or Whatever and then we can go from there But basically the goal is to see if we Can teach her to go into the crate Happily and really finally and then We'll go from there okay I can see that She's very food motivated great Yes so good Good okay And I love that you got that little okay In there before she came out that was Awesome page of that again great I can't you can't without cute shoes Good good girl okay okay yeah Yeah okay so now what we're gonna do is You're gonna ask her to go in again that Was awesome you're gonna reward her and Then we're gonna pause for a quick Second and we're gonna reward her for Not coming out quite so fast okay if she Comes out a bit early like she beat you To the punch we're just gonna ask her to Go back in and then we're gonna try and
Reward her from there so I want her to Be able to stay in the crate for it's Maybe like 10 or 15 seconds yeah Well that's okay we missed our moment One of the reasons why we want our Puppies to wait for us to be released Out of the crate is we'll eventually use That for control whether we want to Attach our puppy's leash or not have Them jump all over us but when we have a Baby puppy that doesn't really know what Okay means our goal is to beat them to The punch and kind of make it seem like It was our idea in the first place so Let's get back to training oh yes good You pull your hand away yes That's it before she comes out yes good And then when you remove there we go I Was just going to say push her back a Bit so she's a bit like in more Comfortable spot now reward again yes Yes good yes again yes yes good good and Then while you're reaching for food this Is very dangerous because she's holding Let's get a rewarded oh yeah yeah good Girl good girl okay release her up for a Sec okay yeah Yeah great to see how she held there Yeah because we basically wanted her to Say oh look at me the longer I stay in Here the more I get rewarded but so much Of it is about timing so when we reach For food and the food's really far away We know that that's sort of an opening
Opportunity for her to like come out Yeah so we need to be very quick to Reward yeah now I could see that when She was lying down she was less likely To want to come out not that she has to Go in a crate and like oh good girl and Stay in the down but if we're trying to Work on like um longevity or Self-control having her sit or lie down Can be helpful good girl good or treats That she has to chew a little longer Okay remember again yes wow good just Pause for a second yes reward again oh My goodness she's brilliant and then we Want to quit while we're ahead release Her okay so Effie has already clearly Been working on some fun correct games With June already she's going in uh very Easily on command so good for you if Your puppy's not at that stage yet we Actually have an awesome video that Teaches you exactly how to do that so You can click that card right there to Check it out so what we're going to do Now is we're going to work on having her Go in the parade we're just going to Work on having the door be shut and Eventually once she's comfortable we're Going to build into having you actually Move and so that you can't see you Rewarding her for for being calm so We're going to start out by having her Go in the crate so keep going okay Then I'm going to take her leash off and
Then just a note for those people Watching at home Um it is important that you don't leave Your puppy uh with a line on in the Crate just for safety reasons obviously We're here we can see what's happening But still good okay She's in the crate she's adorable But we're just going to sort of ignore Her for a second now Good girl good so sometimes what happens If we sit here and we just like sort of Stare at her it's sort of cutie that's Exactly what she wants we don't Necessarily need to feed her right now As well because we're already close by Which is sort of what she's looking for Um now what starts to happen even right Now she's not super comfortable right Because she's kind of like hey I would Rather be out like on your laps than Like hanging out yeah so we'll just sort Of hang out with her a little bit here This all sort of takes time good girl What a good girl Oh good girl Good now actually The ah reminded me of something it was Definitely enough she's so freaking cute Uh however but we do need to be careful Of and sometimes we inadvertently make The stress worse by reacting because We're like oh she's crying oh it's okay It's okay and if we respond that way we
Have to remember that a lot of puppies Might internalize that as praise so as She's making those noises and whining And we're going it's okay and we're Trying to soothe her sometimes the dogs Are like oh like she's praising me with This wonderful voice maybe she likes What I'm doing right so sometimes it's Best even though like we don't really Want her to do what she's doing Sometimes if you just ignore them for a Little bit the ignoring tactic doesn't Always work but sometimes it does so if We just ignore her and wait until she's A little bit more subtle she's just Naughty little sausages she Um And then we can pick and choose a reward When she's being a little bit more calm She's Stressed but in like a bit of a bratty Way right now yeah she's basically Saying I don't really want to do in here So I'm going to basically come up with Something to do hey Yes good girl good Yeah so I might choose to reward her now So instead of letting her sort of Self-reward by digging and having a Little tug party with her bed I just Interrupted her so it was a bit of a Correction but like not really like Negative just sort of like hey that's it Good girl oops
Yes good girl that's a better quad yet Good girl so I'm going to pick and Choose my moments to reinforce her Um or not so the digging on the bed Isn't really that big of a deal but what I know about dogs is that this leads to Crying and stress and I don't even mean Stress in like she's like she's not Necessarily upset right now she's Irritated that she doesn't get to go out And do what she wants which is exactly Why the quick training is so important Because that allows you to have a little Bit more leadership and sure to learn That sometimes you just don't get to do Whatever you want sometimes you have to Go in you know and it's not terrible you Have this trait you have a nice fluffy Bed like the world really isn't that Terrible she's just not used to this Program crate training is something that We work on in our puppy Essentials Online program so if you need some help With your crate training check out the Link in the description below Um like I said earlier it takes a little Bit like five minutes of rewinding and Then she and then she's a little bit More settled yeah so Um that's really really good we want That five minutes to turn into like zero Minutes so that you're you can leave a Little bit more easily when she's Unsettled though and you are trying to
Kind of stick around and settle her you Could curl Um are you like interrupting her Behavior or are you trying to like shush Her Uh both sometimes And she like kind of settles down yes Um she's getting better at down now and We like just learned down and like two Days ago Okay so Yes good girl okay good so I'm not that What you're doing is wrong or right it's Just I want you to make sure that when She's correct when she's acting a little Bit like bratty or stressy or whatever It is in that moment just make sure that You're shushing isn't being perceived as Praise for her right so what you almost Want to do is interrupt her so that There's a bit more of um I don't like to Work use the word negative response but That's kind of what I mean hey hey Like that Good girl yes good lie down and then the Positive reinforcement is yes good girl Is for this Behavior so that she's not Really she's just getting clearer Information and hopefully that will Tighten your time frame up so that you Just have to have less of a conversation With her about it So we're gonna have you go out the door And we're going to uh which might Actually get her to wake up a little bit
If she's quiet you're gonna come back in And you're going to reward her for being Quiet if she's making noise though You're going to use some type of herbal Reprimand ah hey quiet something like That from out there and then you're Gonna step in but don't walk to her Right away we might just need to use our Voice now two things will happen she'll Either hear your voice and she will be Quiet in which that will earn her the Opportunity for you to come in close to Her and give her some attention if you Are standing there and you're saying Quiet and she's still whining Um I don't necessarily want you to come In closer unless we're going to come in Closer to like bang the crate or do Something because sometimes we have dogs Who are have a little bit of separation Anxiety just the fact that they get to See you again they're like ah yes but we Don't want her to think oh when I cry Mom appears okay I'm gonna give this to You you've got your treats in there Let's both get up and walk away and Let's just see what happens Okay you're going out I'm just going to Kind of go back here a little bit Okay come on back in Oh crap okay just stand there for a Second Good now praise good good and let's not Go back to her because we got a wine I
Don't want her to think but we can Praise her hey quiet Good good choir good girl now let's see If she'll be quiet for a few moments Go back and reward yes good girl Good good choice good okay walk out Again That was awesome Oh okay tell her quiet quiet When you say it um like when you say it Be a little more like matter of fact do You want me to stay quiet outside of the Door You could hate quiet both are good but I Think the word quiet would be good to Build in okay Good quiet perfect perfect really good Quiet Hey quiet Hey Quiet Good oh praise good good good that was Great good okay just poke out outside For just one second Quiet Okay come on back in and go right to her And reward good girl so I wanted you to Go out before coming back to reward Because I want her to understand that When you leave and she's quiet that's When the good things happen because if You're in here watching her she was a Little bit like ah you're right there Come and see me we don't really want to
Reward her for that good girl good okay A couple little tips when you say quiet Try if you can to change the intonation Of your command to sound a bit like um Like a question like quiet it's more Like please be quiet just hey quiet we Don't just sound like mean but more like Quiet like almost like saying you're Fine yeah you're fine quiet you're fine Yeah Quiet oh we did it again it's okay Especially if you've been doing it it's Okay it's okay good girl good quiet good Girl Good choice I can't do it good you can You can make sure you tell your partner So you can remind you guys can remind Each other good quiet good girl good yep Because she might not know really what Quiet means at this point but dogs can Absolutely understand like tone of voice Yeah like you could even be like Macaroni and because you're saying it Like lower and like with the different Tone they are a bit more responsive and Then over time obviously they do the Work okay she's not really paying Attention to you so let's let's go let's Uh go out the door there oh my God I Can't handle her cute she is Quiet quiet Good job Abby Now come back in yes good girl good good Now the other important thing about this
Is we could do this all day if we wanted To but that's actually not a good idea Because sometimes if you work it too Long I would imagine now that if we were Just to like talk for a little bit She'll probably because we've really Worked her brain she's probably ready to She's ready to go to sleep so we Probably show we should quit with this Exercise while we're ahead so what I Think we should do though is take Advantage of the fact that she's calm And like let's just let her be in there Um and then we can decide what we want To do next okay so that happened a Little bit Fast and Furious we'll talk About about a few things you did so good With adopting your voice I know it's not Going to be easy but do you understand You understand sort of why that's the Case and it's hard to break a habit for Sure but it will honestly make a Difference what it also does is it Allows your Um your reprimand to sound different Than your praise because if everything All sounds the same that's also not as Clear for her but if you you can say yes Good girl are quiet in this office Sweetest voice that you want to provided She's doing good but that just helps to Kind of clear the clear the waters a Little bit a couple other things I Wanted to mention when you go to
Practice this on your own Is you have to sometimes use your gut Which is why this is challenging about When to stay quiet and when to praise When to come in so she can see you see You when to kind of just stay outside For a second because it's not oh it's Not like a she does this you do this she Does this use to do this kind of thing All of the time so you kind of want to Remember that what we're trying to do Here is teach her that quiet calm Behavior is what brings you in with Praise and reward so that if if you're Able to use your voice to get her to Quiet without actually reappearing that Would be ideal but when we have a puppy They don't always know how to respond to Our voice until we pair our quiet hey Knock it off with some type of Consequence of some sort whether that's Coming in and using our voice a little Farmer or if it's coming in and doing Little bang on the crate that we did Earlier so she understands what that Quiet means so that we can then balance It out with making sure that one and we Appearance because of of good things And then also too when you're practicing You have to kind of again use your gut On how much to push it so we could go Out and we could come back in and we Could do that whole thing for you know Several minutes in a row but that's not
Necessarily the right thing to do when You have a puppy so you kind of need to Do it with with smaller amounts of time If that makes sense yeah it was hardly Anything though so like if I was to like Need to take a shower or something and I Guess but but you're not like going to Get out of the shower yeah back to the Dog so do you just like let her bar yep That's a super good question so I would Do one of two things I would either do The cried out method and I would have a Shower and I would let her go on and hey Hey hey where are you digging to There you go good girl I would either Just let her make the noise and have a Shower and let her just sort of figure It out and then go to sleep and don't Interact with her either way so she's Not getting reinforced and she's not Getting disciplined nothing or you could She's got a little crate for some dogs You could literally just bring her into The in the bathroom pop the crate down Put her in the crate while you have a Shower rather than letting her be loose Put her in the crate but she's with you You could do that way so one of two Things or sometimes you have to do life Things and that's what makes crate Training so hard because the crate is is Designed to allow us to do normal life Things and actually get to disengage From the puppy that's the beauty of a
Crate so sometimes when we're having Crate training issues you have to really You have to Um say to yourself okay I'm gonna crate Train but I'm gonna like pretend I'm Having a shower you're not gonna Actually have a shower but like put her In the crate go into the bathroom for a Second or two and then come back and Reward so you need or like just like we Did go into the other room or step Outside for a second so that she's Getting getting more rehearsal of it Actually like she doesn't think that It's training time but you guys know It's training time and then sometimes if You're doing an actual real life thing And she's in the crate and you're on the Phone or something sometimes you're Going to have to say hey give me one Second mute and then go and deal with Her it's like you know what knock it off That's enough and don't let it happen And then go back to the phone call and If she's good pause good girl quite like You have to dog train and you have to do Life at the same time that's not always Possible when we're in a shower but There's other circumstances where you Sometimes need to stop what you're doing And deal with what's happening so that She's getting good consistent consistent Information it can be challenging for Dogs to improve with something if
There's inconsistency in the information That they're getting Effie was making a Few small mistakes with her training but There's actually one big mistake that a Lot of new puppy owners make to make Sure that you're not making that mistake Watch that video right here on that note I'm kale this is adorable little Juno Happy training
