All right today we’re going to discuss One of the leading causes of death for Large breed dogs and that is bloat if You don’t know what bloat is you better Stay tuned because we’re going to clue You into what it’s all about all right So come over here and let me show you What we’re working with this is a bowl Of water and what we have here is just a Little garbage bag this garbage bag is Representing A dog’s stomach And what happens is with a large breed Dog especially barrel chested or large Chested dogs their stomach sits In their chest cavity kind of like a Hammock And as they’re running around if there’s Nothing in it no harm no foul What happens however is when you put Food into your dog’s stomach right you Feed them [Applause] You put a little food in there and They’ve just ate you said all especially Puppies and some dogs get extra frisky After they eat So after they eat you say you know what Let me take them outside and throw the Ball So we have food now in the stomach and Now it’s weighted and look what happens As it’s running around as they’re Running around and they jump to catch
That ball look what happened i’ll show You one more time They jump to catch the ball the stomach Is now twisted and there’s gases inside And as the gases expand this is going to Blow up and actually rupture inside of Their chest cavity and you have a major Major problem we’re talking your dog Will die within one to two hours Could die could very possibly die within One to two hours of that happening it Doesn’t just have to be playing ball They could be roughhousing on the floor Rolling around on the ground and if they Roll over in such a way this happens now What can Make it even worse is free Is if we take that same food and what Are most dogs do after they eat a whole Bowl of food well they’re very thirsty And they drink an entire bowl or even Two Of water Well now you just added even more weight To their stomach and now this is Sloshing around And we have holes in it We’ll go with it Now there’s even more weight that’s a Pretty typical amount of food maybe even A small amount of food and a pretty Typical amount of water this is already Feeling like three to four pounds of Weight and as same thing you’re playing
With your dog you throw the frisbee they Go outside and they run up to the fence Line and bark at someone Boom it flips you have a major problem And again this is going to cut off all Circulation to the stomach the gases are Going to expand their stomach could pop And you won’t even know that it’s Happening Until it’s too late And again you have about an hour or two To get them to the vet at best in order For them to perform an emergency surgery Cut them open and untwist and fix the Stomach In the next lesson we’ll talk about the Signs of bloat in case you feel like Your dog may have got it and what you Can do we’ll see in the next lesson
