In today’s episode I’m going to show you The obedience training with puppies Fen From beginning to end mistakes and all In this video you will see the first Three training sessions that I did with Him during these three training sessions We worked on engagement training luring Leash pressure and we introduced the Verbal command if you want to learn each Step in more detail be sure to check the Links to the corresponding episodes that I placed in the description of this Video before starting any training Session with a dog it is imperative that You don’t start the actual training Until the dog is comfortable and trust You in the first session was Finn we Weren’t able to train because as you can See he was a little nervous however After a few hours of bonding and hanging Out he was ready and eager to start to Learn now be aware if you start when a Dog is uncomfortable in any way then That negative feeling May transfer over To the training which would greatly slow Down the learning process for your dog Let’s not waste any more time and get Started very good so he’s definitely Food motivated which is good and I’m Going to try to get him to look at me Yes and then I’m going to reward him Very nice good job buddy oh this is good Huh you like it Yes so the moment he looks that’s when I
Mark I’m just using yes right now very Good Yes excellent you took a baby we’re Gonna try to do a free and I just make Him come and get it a little bit so he Doesn’t have to go that far just moving Towards it yes whereas the yes I bring It to him And uh Free I have them come get it come on Come on buddy buddy here oh very good Nice job he likes being on the bed so I’m gonna make him go to the other side Of the bed just by making him go back a Little bit come here this way very good Excellent Yes very nice notice the pause after I Say Yes See that slight pause very important and Then we’re going to go hey Focus Right here Right here He hears Some Noise maybe one of these a Little higher value Free very good and notice I don’t have Him watch for long so a common mistake Is people will ask for their yes for the Dog to look at them for a long period of Time in the early stages and it’s too Long the moment he looks at me Yes that’s what I’m marking I’m saying Looking at me is exactly what I want Good job baby
And we’re gonna do another one here And that’s fine I’m just not going to Reward that when he jumps up free what He’s doing is is trying to figure out Different options in order to get the Reward and if you get upset at this Point Then what you’re doing is you’re telling Him to not try different options we Always want a dog to try to do different Behaviors in order to get the reward yes When they’re willing to try different Behaviors to get the reward it makes Training them much easier so if your Dog’s trying yes different techniques to Get the treat if it’s not what you want In the beginning just don’t reward it But don’t correct the dog for doing it Free very good you’re a good baby yes You are lots of love and affection and Also notice after I say the marker Yes good boy I’m praising him afterwards So I’m saying good job nice so I’m Saying the marker yes and after that he Gets the treat he gets Petty and he gets Affection I let him know he’s doing a Great job so all these things are going To help make that marker more valuable Which is going to transfer over to our Training Here buddy Free and the first time I met this puppy He was not as food motivated so we Worked on that food drive and he was a
Little cautious so I spent about two Hours just hanging out with him making Sure he was nice and comfortable with me Yes good job he just looked at me for a Brief moment that’s all we need and he’s What about three months of age right Yeah so young young puppy and good time To start training too Yes very good excellent nice job Three very good now I’m gonna see if I Can get them to move around a little bit More have a little more play where you Going buddy All the treats are over here Coming good job very good so I get one Piece there for coming towards me gave Him another piece right there Good another one right there excellent He’s gonna look at me oops drop the Piece oh that’s fine did you get it Did you get it buddy [Music] Oh you didn’t like that noise Come here sweetie good boy Foreign Sometimes I’ll lay down to see if That’ll get a dog to come over because It’s less intimidating when we’re at a Much lower level come here baby Toss some treats at him There he goes [Music] Oh come here baby Good job very nice I gave him another
Piece right there I’m gonna grab some More treats we have some of his treats Over here Come on sweetie I dropped a couple but That’s okay so these freeze-dried ones Tend to be a little higher value again I’m not going to correct him for jumping Up on the furniture right now I’m just Not going to reward him for it Good good job buddy let’s get a couple More of those markers in yes very nice Free very good good boy good boy buddy I Love the playful energy very good See I got the treat yes very nice good And again I just want him looking at me Free he doesn’t have to sit he doesn’t Have to lay down we just want him to Look good I gave him some more treats Right there so already working on some Of that luring Yes Megan try pause after I say the Marker which is yes and free Also saying it the same way every time So it’s always Free It’s not free one time and then free the Next we want to be consistent with the Way we say the words I wanted to move Towards the food so I’m going to Mark I’m going to reward that good very nice I gave him a piece right there I gave him another piece right there And we’re going to get them to look up Again
Yes good job so you see he’s already Starting to respond to that a little bit Come here buddy where you going you Getting bored You’re getting bored so I’m going to end The session because he’s getting Disinterested he wants to do other Things so I’m gonna get a couple more Markers in Three very good making sure we pause Again and switching hands is important Yes Very nice buddy Three good there we go let’s get a Couple more excellent Good job now I might go ahead and do Another session like this today later in The day you can do easily one to five Short engagement training sessions with Your dog the first couple days they’re Short they’re sweet you give them the Treats but it helps get them conditioned To those markers it helps get them to Enjoy the training so then by day two or Day three we can introduce the Second Step which is going to be luring and I’m Going to show you that right after this If you’ve been looking for a healthy Treat option for your dog that they’ll Also love then you need to try Ari and Charlie’s freeze-dried dog food and what Better time to start than now with our Black Friday sale for a limited time Only you will receive 20 off plus free
Shipping with coupon codes Black Friday 20 and free ship the sale starts now so Be sure to click on the link in the Description of this video okay we’re Back with Sven on his second training Session I’m going to start off with a Little bit of that engagement training That we did before when he paused up by The way I’m not giving him treats Anytime he paused up he doesn’t get Access to the treat that’s important to Note he has to know that Pine doesn’t Get access to the reward but once his Paws go down and this is something other People have issues with so it’s good to Address when his paws go down then I’ll Give him the treat I won’t give it to Him while his paws are up And I’m not going to correct him for Jumping up or anything like that in the Beginning when dealing with a puppy we Simply use negative punishment when they Do things we don’t want which is the Removal of the reward or preventing Access to the reward see I’m closing my Hand up as he’s trying to get to it now His hands are down or his paws are down And I’ll give him a piece I’m going to Start with that engagement work just to Get him in the zone yes very good making Sure we Mark and then move free very Good nice job buddy Very good very excited yes happy energy That’s what I like
Free very good we’re gonna do a couple More and then we’re gonna go into luring Luring is the Second Step that I do with Every dog I trade yes Very nice Free So for luring I just want him to start Following it Yes when he follows the food Yes I’m Mark and reward as long as yes His paws aren’t up in my hand yes and I’m just having him go back and forth I Can also use free and reward good boy So he’s fine again free Good Free now that I have him going forward I’m going to start having him sit for The food so lifting up Free once his butt hits the ground is When I’m gonna say the marker yes and I Can say either one doesn’t matter at This point it only matters which marker We use when we start to implement the Stay command Come here buddy come here good boy oh my God I’m on the bed Yes Got him off the bed yes Come on right there good job maybe we’ll Get a spin in yes Very nice come on good so we can start Guiding them into all kinds of different Positioning he’s really Motivated by this food which is great
Three Excellent very nice Come on 80d puppies always have that 80d Come here Good come on buddy very nice So something I’m noticing about him is He’s very excited very high energy right Now so I’m gonna stop using the terminal Marker which is the fre and I’m gonna Focus on the continuation marker which Is y-e-s just to kind of slow him down a Little bit And I’m just going to prevent him yes From smelling the ground since he keeps Doing that and it’s distracting from the Training so I’m just going to use the Leash to prevent that He’s smelling little pieces from the Toys I was out here with my dogs playing Earlier I’m gonna get him a bigger piece one of The freeze-dried pieces There we go our lift Yes nice job I’m going to try and do Some more sits We got that 80d energy come on Yes very good buddy excellent Yes good now we’re gonna try to get some Of the Downs in there yes very good back Up into the city yes good back into the Down yes people like to call these puppy Push-ups very good buddy let’s get a Couple more of those I’m just pulling him away from the
Distractions that he keeps smelling Yes excellent bring them back up yes Again notice I’m just using Yes now instead of the other marker Yes only because the other marker Usually gets them a little bit more Excited most dogs So if you notice your dog is very fast Moving very high energy yes sometimes we Change the way we’re training in order To slow yes slow the dog down a little Bit a lot of the times I’m trying to Speed up the dog but you can see He’s a very high energy puppy so we’re Going to slow him down a little bit yes This is very nice he’s following the Food very well yes And that’s the goal during This step we want to be able to take the Food and guide our dog in any position We want I’m going to start introducing The center Good nice Very good buddy get him to come back to Me into the sit front position good Excellent back into the down position Very nice Back onto the bed come on yes Back off the bed yes very good into a Spin yes good job now we’re picking up Some speed yes good job speed as far as Going from one commanded position to the Next so right now I’m not marking I’m Just giving him the food when he goes
Into the position good boy because I was Talking Yes Nice yes good yes very good yes we can Even work on stand so I can have them Sit and then I can have them pop back Oops Pop back up into the stand Yes Good Another little spin yes Very nice let’s get we go back to the Bed yes good job and this is going to be Yes a very short session so we’re Already almost done I gave him a piece there when he was Pine so I messed up there come on buddy Yes it’s not always going to be perfect Yes but just like they can’t learn the Correct thing in one rep they’re not Going to learn the incorrect Thing by Doing it once wrong Good boy let’s get a couple more of These Downs in there yes very nice Yes good Yes good come on yes very good Foreign Yes excellent Yes very nice got that freebie that I Dropped right there let’s get to the bed Come on buddy Come here oh yes very nice Yes Yes oh
Oh very good I’m gonna bring him into Heel position yes take them into a Down Yes and all done yeah All done and I always like to let dogs Know when I’m done that’s the end of the Session and again we want to make sure It’s short and sweet you want your dog To want to continue training when you Finish but now he’s like all right we’re Done so I’m gonna go explore the yard But you don’t want to end when your dog Is Bored trying to leave and trying to Quit you want to end while the dog is Enjoying the training so they want to Come back and do the next session good Nice job so I’m going to start doing a Little bit of luring first make sure yes He’s performing it nicely and then we Might start the leash pressure all right Grady’s doing very good again during Luring I want him to do specific Behaviors once he does the behavior I Can give him the food you can Mark and Reward when you’re doing this step So like when his butt hits the ground I Can say yes and give him the food but Since I have the food directly in front Of his face you don’t have to mark when You’re doing this step because the Primary is always more powerful and Effective than the condition and the Condition would be like the yes or the Free whereas the primary is the actual Treat so what I’m doing right here is
When he gets into the position that’s When I’m releasing the food and you can Do that if you want I do recommend Marking though just for your own Practice to work on your timing so Working on yes saying it the moment his Butt hits the ground or free the moment His elbows hit the ground remember During the step oops I dropped it it Doesn’t matter if you use yes or free Because we’re not working to stay So I’m going to do this is known as the Backwards follow exercise so I just walk Backwards and give them rewards as he Follows me Very nice it’s a good exercise to help Teach the come on call come on baby Very good and then when I stop I can get Them to sit so now he’s sitting right in Front of me in the center position which Is great come on baby Especially with puppies we all we need To always make it fun so important to Make training fun And something I often say is when it Comes to working with a puppy it’s not About making them perfect at what they Do but rather making them enjoy what They do if he enjoys obedience think About how much easier it’s going to be To teach him new behaviors when he gets Older so I think he’s good to introduce The leash pressure now leash pressure The the idea is to get them to follow
The leash and not to resist it so see There’s a little resistance there and he Came towards me the way we teach the Least pressure is we apply the pressure And once he does the behavior so go Ahead and eat that buddy And once he does the behavior turn off Pressure and then we deliver the reward So we apply pressure once he goes Towards it I can turn the pressure off Give him the treat lift up is for the Sit good he does it I turn the pressure Off pulling down is for the down Excellent and he has that puppy energy Which is really nice get him to follow It for the bed yes and he’s just Naturally following it which is yes Really nice I’m going to try and use my foot as well So there’s the pressure now I’m going to Lure him down When you first start teaching leash Pressure it’s it shouldn’t be forced We’re not getting the dog to do the Behaviors of the force it’s just one Additional cue so I shouldn’t have to Pull him down this is the cue I’m Telling him I want you to lay down but It’s not force that’s why when we’re Teaching it We use the lure to teach them the Behavior so we start the pressure then We lure them into the position we turn Off the pressure we give the dog the
Treat we apply the pressure We lure them into the position turn off The pressure provide the treat same Thing guide them over yes very good see If I can get some spins oh oh I messed That up it’s all right come here baby Spin yes very good I like that and the Big difference between using the least Pressure as well as providing rewards is That we’re using negative reinforcement Negative reinforcement essentially Removes the option for Choice it’s Showing our dogs that these commands yes They’re mandatory if I’m only using Treats yes Then the behaviors are limited by how Much the dog wants the reward so he’s Doing really really nice and He’s going to be very close to where we Can start adding the command that’s Something that people always ask they’re Like when do we add the command when do We have to add the command people want To add the command right away I want to add the command when I can Communicate clearly with the dog And I can show them exactly what I want Because I like to think of commands more Like questions when I tell a dog sit What I’m doing is I’m saying hey Sven do You know what to do when I say sit and He goes no I’m not quite sure what I Want you to do and I go this is what you Do and then I lure him into the sit and
Then I give him the reward so we’re Asking them a question but then we’re Providing the answer yes very nice so Again here’s the pressure then the lure Makes sure the pressure comes first Remember we want to separate everything We do with our dogs dogs can’t multitask You can’t present multiple things to the Dog at the same time they won’t be able To learn it and that’s something I talk About often on this channel and it’s Known as overshadowing two things are Presented to a dog at the exact same Time whatever is more relevant to the Dog is what they’re going to focus on And they will ignore the other element So for example if I do the food and the Leash pressure at the same time he won’t Learn the leash pressure because he’s Focusing on the food you can see when I Do this watch is focus it’s on the food He’s not even paying attention to what I’m doing with the leash but if I do This first He has no choice but to focus on The leash pressure because it’s the only Thing taking place yes very nice he’s Doing great So if we wanted to start adding commands If you want to start adding commands You just want to make sure the command Comes before the actual physical cue so Think of it as questions and answers so If I wanted to and once I start adding
Commands I use the terminal marker free Which again means release Plus reward Because I don’t want to worry about the Stay so I would tell them climb then the Queue free than the reward Off then the queue free reward very nice And I’m going to do some with just Lauren because he’s very motivated which Is great heal then the cue Free reward that wasn’t the best on my Part Center then the Q good boy right here Buddy good now walk a little bit very Nice free release him I dropped a couple Pieces that’s okay come then the cue Notice the separation between the Command Free and the physical cue Spin then the Q Reward heal Q Free reward spin Q free reward place or Climb rather Free reward off Free Climb Q free good Off Three Do a couple commands on the place this Time or the climb Climb or what did you want to call that Climber place Climb okay cool climb then the queue Free excellent Down
Three good sit Three Good boy off Free very nice climb Come on baby whoa Free good Spin Three Down Breathe you could probably teach him a Roll over come come on Mimi Good boy Good Hey I’m gonna grab the leash because he’s Getting distracted Sit Free We’re gonna do a bunch of sits right now Sit Free Very nice sit free very good Sit free very nice excellent sit Free very good Climb Come on baby breathe nice I’m gonna do a Couple more and then we’re gonna end the Session Off Free Good boy Spin Breathe excellent down Three very good heel
Three Yay and you can have him heal when he or A Sit when he gets in the heel as well Which is usually preferred so you can Have them come here and then make them Sit free oh not while he’s pawing though Good boy and then all done nice job Buddy another great short little session Thanks for watching guys don’t forget to Hit that like button and if you haven’t Done so already be sure to subscribe Happy training and enjoy your Thanksgiving weekend
