Today we’re going to be working with a Young dog and we’re going to be teaching This dog the first three steps to Develop our communication channels the Most important thing when working with a Dog is being able to let them know in a Timely manner when they’re right and When they’re wrong and i’m going to show You today exactly how to do that the Very first thing we’re going to focus on Is the engagement training now remember This is going to be the word or sound That we use that predicts a reward known As a condition reinforcer a conditioned Reinforcer in order for it to be a Condition reinforcer it must predict the Primary now remember the primary is Going to be food toy or affection i like To reserve my markers as a predictor of Food or toys since we pet our dogs all The time i don’t feel like petting is as Valuable as an actual treat and since She’s a lab labs love their food which Makes it much easier to teach new Behaviors now also remember when we’re First teaching new behaviors we do Continual reinforcement so that means We’re rewarding every single correct Repetition During this step we’re going to be Teaching two markers and in order for a Marker to be a marker it must predict One of the four quadrants of opera Conditioning so that’s your positive and
Negative reinforcement positive and Negative punishment This is going to be predicting positive Reinforcement now it also has to Guarantee the reward if we make this Sound It means we’re going to pay her Guaranteed it’s not we pay her sometimes And not the other times it’s every Single time that’s what makes a marker So valuable now when we do this the two Markers we’re going to be teaching one Is known as a continuation marker the Easiest way to remember sounds is by What it predicts so i’m going to Demonstrate in the very beginning what i Do is i take the food i show the dog the Food i want them to know i have Something of value i bring it up by my Face so the dog looks up at my face now They’re looking at the food in our hand They’re not stupid if i start moving my Hand around the dog’s gonna fall in my Hand they also are attracted to movement Just like us so i’m gonna hold it by my Face once your dog looks up at me i’m Going to say the marker we’re going We’re going to use yes As a continuation marker so yes means a Reward that’s it it does not change the Dog’s circumstances it just means she’s Going to be paid and then we’re going to Use the word free i believe is what We’re using right free means release and
Reward so if she is in a stay it will Release her from that stay and it Guarantees a reward the way i’m going to Do this is i’m going to show her the Food i’m going to hold my hands by my Face once she looks at me i’m going to Say the continuation marker i’m going to Pause for about a half second then i’m Going to deliver the reward after i mark And i go to deliver the reward it’s okay To talk to the dog as well meaning i can Say the marker handle the tree good girl Nice job and praise her and pet her so It doesn’t have to be super robotic once She eats that which is going to be Pretty quick and she looks back up at me I’m going to use the terminal marker and Then i’m just going to drop back using That body language we’re using uh prey Drive by moving away and we’re using her Food drive because she knows we have the Food that’s going to teach her to get up To come and get the reward once she’s Conditioned to the two markers you no Longer have to do that movement meaning Let’s say you want to tell her to do it Down you tell her down she lays down you Don’t have to say the terminal marker And then move back she’s already Conditioned at that point so you could Just say the marker and hand it to her And she knows that she can get up at That point so i’m showing her the food Bring it to my face
Yes And then reward notice the pause Free And then i move back very good nice job Show her again the food we can really Manipulate the dog’s position by using That power steering i’m going to switch Hands as well yes And reward Again notice that half second pause Free And then move back good girl and you see That gets her excited Since she is a higher energy dog when we Do start showing her behaviors we’re Going to use the continuation marker a Little bit more just to slow her down a Little bit When I’ve worked with her and i have her Sitting and then i’ll say come and She’ll come after like jump up on me Before she turns around and sits so That just means that she doesn’t fully Know the entire completion of the Exercise she knows to run to you and Then she’s really excited so she’s Jumping up on you we’re just going to Show her the actual exercises to come up And sit so doing enough repetitions is Going to help with that so again she’s Looking at me Yes and i’m not asking her to do any Commands nothing like that i just want
Her to look at me Free And then again we move back You want to continue this exercise until She’s conditioned to the markers now if You do this correctly and your timing is Right then it usually takes most dogs A day maybe two or three to become fully Conditioned and what i mean by condition Is they know that when they hear yes They’re going to receive a reward and How did ivan pavlov know that his dogs Were conditioned in his studies where he Determined what classical conditioning Was they would salivate the four most Common change of behaviors i see is Opening their mouth licking their lips Salivating or moving their paws which is Very common with our labs so let’s try The free so you’re going to say free Don’t move free now move Very good timing was much better and Then give her the reward excellent yeah It’s always harder than it looks but It’s very hard these details make the Biggest difference so say free there we Go and then move back Now i recommend when you’re practicing This film yourself and then watch the Footage because you’re going to be able To critique yourself better than anyone Else and you’ll notice so the most Important thing is of course our timing But being able to identify when we’re
Making a mistake so the fact that you Didn’t you knew you you paired it a Little bit that’s a great indicator that You’re going to end up doing very well Because you’re aware of the mistake if We’re not aware of it then we’re not Training me not the dog all right now We’re gonna move on to the second step i Want to make sure i’m holding the food In my hand To where it’s easy for her to grab it so We create a little valley that way she Can place her muzzle into the valley and She can get a piece of food i don’t like Doing this all the time because you can See that’s a little harder for her to Grab so cupping it in our hand works Really well once i get to that point When she’s doing the behaviors the way That you love That’s when you can start naming them That’s when we can start saying sit and Down and come and all this so what i Want to do for the sit all i do is i Walk backwards i do a little bow and Then when she gets to me i lift up so She sits right in front of me And that’s going to also be the same cue That we do with come when called so come And sit are very similar so see how i Get her to move i lift yes and then i Reward I get her to move i lift Free and then i reward what most people
Do is the dog’s already sitting and they Go how do i get my dog to stand up well You just get on the move And then we lift okay yes and then Reward come when called very similar i Just keep my hands in the center because I want the dog to come and sit center Now she’s crooked there you’re not Competing with her so it really doesn’t Matter yes but that shows them when i Call you i don’t want you to run and Jump up on me i want you to run and sit In front of me nicely i also like to Teach dogs to spin because it makes the Training a little bit more fun With the heel i step back with my left Leg i guide the dog around and once they Get into position then i’m marking Reward for the center but you’re not Saying anything after you yeah exactly Because during this step i want her to Focus on my body language and also when We start naming behaviors so like let’s Say for example She’s really good at following the food But let’s say she wasn’t that great at It and she would go down very slowly i Wouldn’t want to name that behavior Because then she’s going to end up more Likely than not doing the behavior Slowly I want the behavior to look a specific Way before i put it on command because Once i put it on command then that’s
Going to be how she performs it more Likely than not if you have a dog if You’re working with a dog that has lower Perseverance you want to reward effort So you would reward perhaps right there Because some dogs will start to turn and They’ll go ah it’s too much work and They won’t complete it but she has Really high perseverance and high food Drive so it makes it pretty easy and Again for the heel position we step back With the left leg Out and around And then we put her into the sit next Step is going to be teaching her leash Pressure Now leash pressure is negative Reinforcement we’re going to use this For loose leash walking for teaching the Stay command for reinforcing boundaries Rules and expectations Negative reinforcement is not what People think people always think Negative reinforcement is a punishment No it’s not negative reinforcement is we Turn pressure on when they comply we Turn it off the two most important Things that must take place when we’re Doing negative reinforcement is number One once the pressure is turned on it Cannot be turned off until they comply And number two the moment they comply it Has to instantly be turned off When we turn on pressure
This can be a mildly stressful exercise For a dog first time they learn it the Way it was taught traditionally was we Would turn the pressure on and we would Just wait till the dog figured it out Now some dogs would figure it out pretty Quickly Other dogs would resist they bite at the Leash they flop on the ground they’re Trying to do a behavior that’s going to Turn the pressure off so when we turn on This pressure what we’re really doing is We’re presenting a problem We’re saying here’s a problem do you Know how to solve it And she goes no i don’t know what to do Or she goes yeah i do and she does the Behavior so what we do when we’re Teaching this is we present the dog with The problem and then we give them the Solution we don’t wait for them to Figure it out and we do it enough times To where we present the problem and the Dog gives us the answer or the solution Before we provide it for them it’s just Like everything else that we do so when I start this all i’m going to do Now i keep my hand behind my back that Has the food because what we will do on Accident is we will lure the dog at the Exact same time and then we’re not Teaching the dog the leash pressure in Addition i like to get down to the dog’s Level so i’m going to bring the food
Behind my back i’m going to lift up There’s the pressure Now i’m going to give her the solution Turn off the pressure give her the food So remember two most important things Once it’s turned on well she did it so i Turned the pressure off We don’t turn it off until they comply The moment they comply we instantly turn It off So we apply pressure good she does that Nicely so i’m going to make her do the Sit position from there and then we give Her the answer turn off the pressure Reward when i’m doing this exercise i’m Not pulling hard you shouldn’t be Physically pulling them into the Position it’s a sensation she feels it I’m not physically pulling her up you See she still has a big smile on her Face she’s waiting for the food now i’m Gonna give her the answer i turn out the Pressure i’m marking reward it’s almost Like she’s saying i’m not gonna do it Till i have the food yeah and it’s Because she doesn’t know if she knew That sitting up right away would turn it Off and give her the treats she would do It so we’re gonna do another one turn Off the pressure and reward in addition I like to teach the dogs to go into the Down when i use my foot because i don’t Like to have to bend down all the time And this is a great way to help teach
The down command without blowing out Your lower back When i do this i bring my leg up so the Dog can see it then and she’s already Doing yes You guys have worked on this already With her for a little bit which helps Same thing when i go to lift up i lift Up And then once she complies we turn the Pressure off You want to telegraph when people always Say don’t telegraph this is one of the Situations where you want to telegraph You want her to know what you’re doing Before you do it there’s the pressure She goes to lay down i turn the pressure Off then i would mark and reward in the Evening when she’s up here sleeping and It’s time to go outside to go get busy I can have the leash on her i’ll say Millie let’s go She will not comply and even if i’m Pulling her it’s just like She And i haven’t used food for it but It’s a very common issue Just because a dog knows the sit command Doesn’t mean they’re always going to Perform it Just like with people just because we Know something doesn’t mean we’ll always Do it What gets a dog to do behavior we always
Have to think about what gets our dog to Perform behaviors well those four Quadrants of opera conditioning they’re Either motivated by something acts uh They’re either motivated by something Pleasant or motivated to prevent Something unpleasant and we get to Determine what we use to motivate them To alter their behavior if i have her on A climb and she knows leash pressure and I go to apply the leash pressure that’s The same as her ignoring a command if we Want reliability from a command we Implement corrections so what i do with The dog if they’re resisting i apply the Pressure if the dog is resisting i say No i pop the leash and then i go right Back into the pressure Once you give them a correction for Resisting you find that the moment that Leash gets tight they’re compliant right Away because they don’t want to receive The correction nice and slow Gotta have that there we go turn it off Mark and reward Excellent And then let’s do it one with her Getting on the bed Yes yes Sorry i was actually a little early on That one Yes Your timing was way better on that one Too really yes oh
Yes Yeah i’ll have one now All right now that we’ve developed the Communication channels those first three Steps are the most important If we can teach a dog what sounds mean They’re going to receive a reward if we Can teach him how to turn off pressure By complying if we can teach him how to Follow a lure now we can start teaching Her all the commands Now remember a command To our dogs is like a question if i came Up to you and i Wanted you to perform a behavior off of The word blue and i’m like blue Blue Blue Blue you’re like i don’t know what you Want me to do when you make my breath It’s the same thing with the dogs we get A dog and we go sit sit sit sit sit sit And what do they do they sit but why did She sit because i said sit or because i Was making a bunch of noise and she’s Like what’s that noise and then her butt Naturally goes down and what do most People do yay i taught my dog a sit No you just made a bunch of noise and Your dog looked at you and they Naturally said the same way you’re Looking at me when i was telling you Blue so in order to get them to Understand these commands we say the
Command which is the question do you Know what to do when i tell you to climb She’s like no i don’t know what to do But i do know if i stare at you you Might give me a treat Right oh you know that word she turned Her head a little bit so now i’m going To say the words that i want her to Perform and then i’m going to provide The answer with a physical cue that We’ve already established Since we’re not ready to teach this day Once she gets into the position we’re Asking her to perform we’re going to use The terminal marker now this way we can Do a lot of repetition so she starts to Learn what questions link up to which Answers And then once we have that we can start Working on the stay and we can use the Continuation marker and reinforce with The leash pressure all these things that We taught her so these first three steps This is really gold once somebody has That you really don’t even have to do Formal training sessions anymore and the Fact that you guys have her with you all The time you’re going to be able to Train her simply by having her with you You sit down in the morning have your Cup of coffee you’re reading a book you Put her in a climb next to you you’re Working a climb stay you’re taking her On a walk you’re working on a heel
You’re working on automatic sit when Halted you’re working on down you’re Working on come when called you could do All these things While just hanging out with your dog so I’m going to show you how we’re going to Incorporate the commands pay attention To The fact that i say the command then i Present the physical cue Then i use the terminal marker and then I praise and reward her and we’re going To do all the different commands that we Just went over I can use lori Or i can use leash pressure so i can say Climb And then guide her to the bed Free and then reward i said that a Little early but that’s okay Free Heal [Music] Free Down Free Sit Free And i can do all of this with the leash As well now with her it’s really nice Because she’s so food motivated I know she’s going to do the behavior She really wants what i have but not all Dogs are like that you might find you’re
Working with another dog and that dog May perform for the food sometimes and Other times may not really care about The food that’s where the leash comes Into play so if i have a dog that’s not As food motivated they’re interested but They’re not as Driven as she is then i can use the Leash so i can do everything i just did But i’ll use a leash sit Free that was very good on her part down And now i’m gonna use the leash Free Sit Free Good and notice how i’m saying the Command i’m not moving and then i move Bed Free Off Free What i want to do now since she’s really Good at a stay when we’re in the room We’re going to work on teaching her a Stay when we’re not in the room so we’re Going to do this very quickly and i Brought something for you guys to start Training with it’s one of my favorite Tools to use when i’m working with dogs I’ll it’s also really nice because you Can check in with your dog when you’re Not at the house which i love to do with My dogs so i brought it i brought in the Bag right over here let me grab so what
I brought today to help us with the Training is the furbo 360. this is Excellent not only does it track our dog It provides night vision and it’s going To allow us to toss treats to reinforce Positive behaviors and we can also work On our stay command when we’re not in The room and i know that’s something You’ve been struggling with so this is Really going to make that a much easier Process all right let’s get the furbo Box open it comes with the furbo and a Quick start guide so this helps us get It set up and we’re going to use the fur Bow to help the training to make sure Your dog knows how to behave even when We’re not in the room now that we have The furbo plugged in we’re going to add Some treats this is the furbo 360 which Is really cool you can manually rotate The furbo but it also has an auto dog Tracking so when she’s walking around it Will track her it can record that and Send it to your phone And there’s a two way audio on here Night vision full color and it has a Treat tossing which is adjustable so we Can do all these things with the Features that are built into the furbo And it’s going to help us with our Training and we can make sure she’s Performing when we’re not here just as Well as she does when we are here By rewarding and setting up the proper
Expectations now that we have the furbo Downloaded we want to make sure we can Get your dog conditioned to the sound The furbo makes before it sends a treat One of the best ways to do this is to Activate the furbo without any treats And then manually throw the treat to the Dog once she is comfortable with the Sound it’s making then i’m going to Allow the furbo to dispense the treat so Here we go There’s the noise And then we toss the treat now that she Seems comfortable with the sound that The furbo makes before it tosses a treat We’re gonna load it up with treats so The furbo is actually tossing it instead Of me doing that I’m still gonna act like i’m tossing it Though There we go Good girl Come here puppy Girl so she’s looking at me very nice And now i’m going to reward that Behavior by sending a treat Excellent she didn’t even see that one Come out of the furbo now what we’re Going to do is we’re going to work on The bed stay when we’re not in the room So i’m going to place her on the bed Stay and then we’re going to leave the Room we’re going to be watching her Through the furbo the moment she breaks
We’re gonna say wrong come inside and Reinforce the rules so we can see her Sitting there she’s doing much better Now so she’s already starting to learn Wrong Another really cool feature is you’re Able to send treats when your dog is Doing something that you like so she Just went up on the climb bed on her own So let’s go ahead and send her a treat For that And let’s tell her she’s a good girl Good girl millie good girl okay Good job and that’s a really great way To reinforce behaviors with something Positive creating that strong positive Association i absolutely love it another Really cool feature about the furbo 360 Is it has smart alerts something you Want to make sure you do is subscribe to The furbo dog nanny in order to get Real-time smart alerts which will help Keep your pup safe and happy when we’re Not at the house or when you’re not at The house some of the alerts are potty Alert chewing alert running alert it’s Going to let you know if your dog is Performing any of these activities it Also gives you an alert if the dog is Continuously barking or crying and even Howling not to mention additional Features such as home emergency alerts The glass breaking alert all things that Are going to help keep your dog safe and
Healthy sometimes when i want to take Her on a walk i’ll say millie walk and I’ll go get her leash and she’ll like Run away from me or she’ll sometimes Come around the table and i have to pull Out a chair to sort of trap her and She’s okay with the collar going on but I don’t know what it is it’s like walk And she runs the other way she’s Probably playing a game it’s probably Something that’s fun for her so really Easy thing we can do with that i’m going To take the leash off i know we had it On for the training before you take her On a walk just do something like placing Her on a climb bed that’s a very easy Way to control her and then to prep her For the walk so if she was my dog i Would tell her bed And then we’ll Cue her onto the bed if she needs help With a physical cue still which is fine Good girl i could have rewarded her but Now that i have her on the climb bed it Makes it much easier to take the leash Out gear her up with everything we need And then go and take her on a wall so You would have the leash in your hand Already no you could put her on the bed First and then go get a leash or you Could have the leash in your hand but if We know that saying do you want to go on A walk triggers that excitement and she Starts playing that game then we’ll make
Sure we have her in a position that we Can easily control we get her geared up And then this will become the default Behavior before going on a walk so she Knows okay go in on the bed i get geared Up and then we go on our walk so let’s Take her on a walk right now come on Baby now before i start i like to put The dog into a sit stay next to me in Heel position before stepping i say the Heel command so it’s heal and then step You don’t want to say heel and step at The same time that’s another common Mistake and one of the reasons why is if I teach her that when i step she’s Supposed to step with me That means i say heal as i step then When i have her in a sit stay and i step Away and i don’t want her to come with Me and she follows me and then i correct Her for that that would be an unfair Correction because she would be thinking Well no i walk with you every time you Walk because we are pairing the command With the physical so we want to make Sure we say heel Then step and if she’s not in the Position i’m just going to use the leash To got her back if she goes ahead which She’s following me nicely good girl so I’m going to use verbal praise wrong Notice when i said wrong come here baby I’m going to guide her back right back In the heel and then loose good girl if
She goes too far ahead of me wrong Then i apply the leash now you remember The picture that we did earlier good so It’s showing her how to find that Position very easily and if she goes Behind me i would say wrong as well Wrong Another thing that i like to do is i try To leave the dog’s heel position so She’s not paying attention to me wrong You see how i step out and then also Notice how there’s no pressure on the Leash Wrong until after i say wrong that come On baby Then i use it and then i go right back To loose wrong And it’s very important come on come on So there’s a little bit of that Resisting you talked about before right There you go good girl you have to make Sure you don’t give in to that pressure Wrong Come on baby good girl very nice Excellent we’re not going to make much Wrong much forward prop good girl and Remember Wrong is just a marker wrong she doesn’t Have a dictionary come here baby she Doesn’t know that i’m saying wrong This would be no different than me going Pancakes Good girl you know the word doesn’t Matter as long as we’re consistent with
The word so what’s really cool about Making sure the dog understands the Communication channels as you’ve already Seen we’re able to use the tools that we Developed in order to teach her Everything we want her to perform so We’re going to do a little bit of Obedience out here and you just have to Think any sort of situation you’re in All you’re really doing when it comes to Training a dog is telling them what you Want them to do and then showing them How to do it if we look at dog training That way if everybody knew okay tell my Dog what i want show my dog how to do it Pay my dog for doing it everybody can Train their dog and you’re going to see We’re going to do some basic commands We’re going to do sit down come heal and Then all this obedience you want to Incorporate throughout your life so for Example you’re taking your dog somewhere What command can you use to get your dog In the vehicle Up Up exactly that’s the command you use For the couch you can use bed if you Wanted to for my dogs i use kennel for Any room the dog is going into so it Doesn’t have to be a crate if i want Them to go into a certain room i say go Kennel i point and they go right to that Area so this stuff is very very Transferable here we go
Sit then the queue Yes and i’m going to use yes and i’m Going to reinforce the stays Come Then the queue Yes then the reward we’re going to throw A d-o-w-n Down Then the queue Yes then the reward and if she’s to Break at any point i’m going to say Wrong which is the marker for negative Reinforcement and i’ll use the leash to Place her back in the position Come Then the q she was ready for that one Yes then the reward Heal Then we step back I can make her sit if i want yes reward Please spin And then yes yes and then reward good Job so now what we’re going to do is Bring her into the heel position so You’re going to step back with your left Leg guide her with your left hand And get her into the heel there we go Good You can use the food to the lure that Was very nice She looks beautiful make sure the leash Stays loose unless so now she’s there we Go Job millie good job
Good job good girl I’m sorry it took a little bit of time Okay And then see how she’s starting to go Ahead if she does that step back and use The leash cue to guide her back into the Heel position and you can help with the Food too and then right back into the Job yes So you don’t even have to wait for her To sit once she’s back in the heel you Just go right back into the walk Okay heel Yes good job Nice job nice walking good girl Okay millie let’s go this way let’s go Excellent i would mark and reward that Test i think that was a good session Let’s head back and give her a break now All you need to do is throughout the day Any time you have her with you which is Pretty much all the time tell her what You want her to do if you’re going to Sit down and watch a movie put her on The bed stay or put her on the upstair Her little section on the couch when You’re working in your office put her in A down next to you and we tell our dogs What we want them to do it does a few Things it increases their confidence Because they know what to do in any Given situation but it also helps teach Them everything that we’ve been working On
Think about how many opportunities you Have in a day to tell your dog sit Without actually having to do a formal Session you can tell your dog sit before You feed them before you go through the Doorway before you put on the collar we Can tell our dog down on the bed so we Can start working all these commands Without ever having to do a formal Training session just by hanging out With her and remember it’s the command Which is the question And then we give her the answer and we Continue to do that up until the point Where you ask her a question do you know What to do when i say bed and she goes i Sure do and she runs to her bed then you Know she now knows it on the verbal Command and we can just continue to Reinforce and grow from that point make Sure when you’re training your dog at Home after you’ve developed those Communication channels anytime we ask Our dog to perform a task we want to Make sure we give them the answer this Way we can build their confidence and Ensure that they know what we’re asking Them to perform thanks again for Watching everyone and we’ll see you in The next one
