[Music] Folks welcome back to another exciting Episode of Adventures in dog training With American Standard dog training and DIY k9.com I am Garrett Wang the owner And founder of both companies and we are Here today to talk to you about the English Mastiff and at the end of this Video help you determine if the English Mastiff is right for you and your family So we got Mr moose tracks here he's About a two two and a half year old English Mastiff a little over 200 pounds And then we have Mr Magnus here Finishing up a six-week board and train Program here with us and he is about What are we talking uh 10 months old and He's probably a buck 20 Buck 30 Buck 40 And still growing so very long and lanky But either way let's dive in let's talk About the breed history let's talk about The temperament trainability health Issues and everything else you'd want to Know about an English Mastiff before you Go ahead and pull the trigger on one all Right folks we're going to talk about The breed history of the English Mastiff Also known as the old English Mastiff The English Mastiff Origins reached Thousands of years back in time all the Way back to the gigantic molasses dogs Of ancient Greece now Britain's largest Mastiff breed is an estimated 2000 years Old and has a rich but violent history
As both a farm Guardian war dog and Canine Gladiator over centuries these Canine companions have protected Homesteads from both four-legged Predators and even the two-legged Variety now another interesting Historical fact about the English Mastiff is that way back when when the Armies of the Roman Empire invaded Britain in 43 A.D the old English Mastiffs fought back against the Roman Intruders alongside their English Masters now ancient Roman literature Praised the prowess bravery and ferocity Of Britain's war dogs their bravery and And prowess so impress the Romans that They actually brought them back to their Country and put them in the arena where They battled against bears tigers and All other manners of crazy animals in The arena the experience gained in Battle throughout the age is still Present in these colossal Mastiffs of Modern times it's this genetic Heritage That makes these giant dogs natural Guardians and protectors today the breed Is known as a gentle companion and loyal Family pet and yet despite their Laid-back disposition and mellow Temperament English Mastiffs still have What it takes to rise to the occasion Should someone threaten to harm them or Their loved ones which leads us into the Next section where we'll talk further
About this dog's temperament and ability To guard the homestead all right let's Go ahead and dive in and talk about the Temperament and trainability of the English Mastiff now many people claim That these imposing dogs are quote Stubborn slow and independent what they Mean to say is that training an English Mastiff is not as easy as say training a German Shepherd Belgian Malinois or Golden retriever now compared to these Overachievers of the canine World English Mastiffs are indeed on the other End of the scale will come coming to Trainability but in my experience they Absolutely can be trained to a high Level now they may be slow learners but They love to work and they love to Please their owners and trainers now as High level owners and trainers we just Need to give them time to learn these New skills and it requires patience and Time in order to get them to achieve These high levels of training so in Short I find that they're a little slow On the uptake but once they learn a new Task they are Rock Solid at that task Now if you're looking into this breed Please don't be discouraged by the myth That they are quote stupid they're not Over the years I've trained several of These lovable Giants to outstanding Levels of obedience learning to heal off Leash in high level or excuse me high
Distraction environments going on to a Place board on cue a duration on the Downstage recalls with perfection also Keep in mind that because these dogs are So huge obedience training is absolutely Necessary because the last thing you Want is a 200 plus pound English Mastiff Running or charging up towards people or Somebody's Chihuahua in the park just Their sheer size is enough to scare Other people or dogs and or hurt other People and dogs so keep in mind also how Obedience trading would be important Because you don't need a 200 plus pound Animal jumping on your 85 year old Grandma that's going to be a problem now If you are looking for a gentle giant Quiet low maintenance you know relaxed Dog who's wonderful around children and Other pets even farm animals you name it These dogs are going to be amazing in Fact they're amazing for farm and Homestead protection because they're low Prey drive makes them great around other Animals for instance we have a bunny Running around here moose could care Less about that so they make incredible Guardians of the homestead great around Children great around other little Little pets like I said with Mr floppy Ears here and he could care less now you Bring a Malinois around this bunny I Don't think that bun is going to last Five seconds anyways enough said about
It English Mastiffs can absolutely be Trained you just need to take a little Bit of time and patience and one more Thing to keep in mind where you might be Able to put in a 30 45 minute training Session with the Malinois these boys and Girls get cooked in 5 10 15 minutes Especially dependent upon where you live But the heat like in South Florida gets To them pretty easily and so you just Got to make those training sessions a Little shorter a little sweeter a little More impactful rather than grind them Out for 30 45 minutes all right now Let's talk about the guarding ability of The English Mastiff now due to their Long history as Guardians and battle Dogs English Mastiffs are naturally Protective of their owners and worry of Strangers this means that they do not Require personal protection training to Defend their family and their territory Compared to many other Guardian breeds English Mastiffs are not the fastest Dogs to act and very rarely will they Just bite a person outright for no Reason if these giant dogs perceive a Threat to their loved ones they will Assume a defensive position typical for What's considered a Close Quarters Guardian in that case the massive will Step in front of their owner and block The their owner from the threat that's Coming whether it be an animal or a
Human now if that animal or human gets Any closer they're going to put out a Serious serious bark if that threat Doesn't appreciate that bark they're Going to let you know what time it is With these over one-inch canine teeth And 900 pounds of pressure English Mastiffs can definitely protect your Homestead protect your family no problem All right now to clarify on something I Said earlier about how these dogs can be Amazing Guardians of the homestead we Also have to kind of contrast them Against other breeds such as maybe a Conic horse or a Presa Canario even a Belgian Malino or a German Shepherd These dogs are incredible Defenders but Rather than run towards the threat 50 100 yards away from their owner to Handle business they're going to hang Back with the owners and kind of keep a Close eye on things so they're not quick To like want to run after someone or Chase them in fact very little prey Drive but they are going to hang tight With the owners and handle business Should they need to also you can take These dogs anywhere and everywhere a Moose is a certified service dog and Goes everywhere with its owners Surrounded by hundreds and thousands of People and brand new people can come up They're a very good judge of character Meaning 99.99 of people mean you and
Your family no harm but this dog will Pick up on that 0.01 percent of people Who do mean you harm and they will be Very quick to spring into action and you Think this is a lazy flat breed or a dog This dog will handle business Lickety-split you wouldn't be you'll be So surprised how quick they can move if They have to handle business so uh Amazing dogs with the family and Children and a very good judge of Character these dogs all right let's Talk a little bit more about the Training and temperament of the English Mastiff and in this case we're going to Dive specifically on Mr moose here and Moose being just a little over two years Old in about a year and a half's time Training with us at American Standard Dog training I didn't train moose Directly I trained the owner Rick Shore How to train his English Mastiff to a High level we're talking crushing it in AKC obedience what you see here on the Right are all of his qualifying ribbons This is the worst ribbon on on the on The bed here or on the couch second Place everything else over here to my Left is first place first place Canine Good Citizen First Place first place First place and two titles also here to My right is the AKC companion dog Certificate which is not easy to achieve Right it usually takes years to achieve
This and this might be the only English Mastiff in the world that has achieved This level of training now when we talk About these first place ribbons over Here we're not talking first place in His category or first place in his breed We're talking first place against any Dog that showed up for the competition German Shepherds Malinois Australian Shepherds and all these other dogs that Were typically associating with Performing to high levels in The Obedience ring Mr moose here as an English Mastiff was able to crush them Not just physically but in obedience This big boy here is probably the Highest strained English Mastiff in the World and he's just an absolute stud so You know we'll take a little bit of Credit for but really Rick Shore the Owner is the one that was able to take This dog to the next level and this dog Has competed against or or gone to Competitions and friendly dog training Events such as ones with protection dogs And even high level protection dog Trainer owners had to stop the boat and Go what am I looking at here because This dog attention heals better than any Malinois or German Shepherd they brought To the field that day that didn't just Happen once or twice it happens every Time we bring Mr moose tracks out to Show them what time it is because you
Know if you ask any dog trainer around They say you can't do it with the English master well it can be done it Just takes a lot more time and Perseverance and it can be done and Mr Moose tracks he might be the exception That's because most people don't get an English massive to compete in any AKC Obedience or otherwise but just to show You it can be done and again with that Hard work hard work does pay off and This is a testament to that all right Now we're going to talk about the Exercising grooming requirements of the English Mastiff now with their Incredible bulk English Mastiffs are not The most athletic dogs to say the least Unlike some of the more agile massive Breeds like the Kane Corso the Dogo Argentino or the Presa Canario English Mastiffs do not need huge amounts of Exercise a few short walks along with Some play and training sessions Sprinkled in throughout the day is more Than enough for the physical and mental Stimulation but even the slowest most Sedentary Mastiff still needs to run Around off leash therefore if you are Considering the breed please ensure you Can offer them a well-sized backyard to Move around in and having a perimeter to Patrol will really satisfy their need to Be that Guardian breed now many people In the online World claim that the
English Mastiffs are perfect for Apartment living however I don't Necessarily share that opinion and the Reason for that is these dogs are Neither small nor agile now trying to Move around a small apartment with lots Of furniture can stress them out also Their enormous bulk requires Extra Care During their puppy and Adolescent phases Which can take up to three years before They physically mature and if you live In an apartment it's likely you'll have To take them up and down stairs multiple Times a day especially to use a bathroom Etc and doing so can severely damage Their growth plates and cause Deformities and joint problems like Arthritis later in life when it comes to Their coat maintenance English Mastiffs Are very easy to look after they require A little more than a one weekly brush a Week and just a little brush will help Get some of that excess hair off Throughout the year now having said all That there is a drool Factor because of These big old massive jowls they drool a Lot now this isn't much but most owners Are going to be familiar with these Gleaming globules of drool ending up on Their TV on their ceiling on the wall And on the sofa so if you're gonna get An English Mastiff that is something you Have to be aware of especially this Comes about when they're excited maybe
On a long walk after they drink water or They they eat some food or anticipation Of food or treats you're going to see Some drools coming down and it is what It is folks it doesn't happen all day Every day as you can tell he's not even Drooling right now but if and when they Do drool it's a little messy you can get On your clothes so you're going to want To have maybe a bandana around the dog's Neck have a small towel handy and try to Wipe those Goobs off when they appear Because if you don't they Harden and dry And I think of it like The Fifth Element Right we got what air water whatever it Is I think drool is like the plasma it's Like a Fifth Element and it's just a Funky thing when it dries it dries like Super glue so it's hard to get off but Hey if you can get over to Jewel Whoopty do nah you'll be set you'll be Good to go my Italian mastiff drool Similar to an English Mastiff it's here There it's everywhere give it a little Scrub it'll come off your walls and be Set so if you get over the drawer you Can get over the size they can be Amazing amazing animals for you and your Family all right it's time to wrap up This video on the English Mastiff yet One question remains should you get the English Mastiff well if you want an Amazing loving stable temperament Guardian then yes get an English Mastiff
But be very careful choosing the right Breeder is extremely important because Of the size of this dog we need to make Sure that not only is the health squared Away but it's the temperament squared Away the last thing you need is a 200 Pound monster on your hands that has Social issues but again if you want an Amazing dog that's great around kids and Other dogs yet has the ability to handle Business than the English Mastiff is Right for you all right folks thanks so Much for taking the time to watch this Video on is the English massive right For you uh would you want to take a one More quick moment to remind you about Our online courses look located at Diyk9.com make sure to check them out Like I said we have everything from Puppy Essentials to High Level Training To take your dog off leash or on leash Anywhere you so desire and thank you Again for watching make sure to like Share subscribe and we will see you [Music] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause]
