Today we are in riverside california at Ph dogs with professional dog trainer Bethany perdome and we’re going to be Working on some common training Techniques and goals we are going to Work on the place command the place Command means go to your bed and stay You can call whatever you want dogs Don’t speak english just pick a word and Stick with it so today we’re going to Use place so our command and our hand Signal for play so we’re going to step And we’re going to point and we’re going To say place so the first thing we need To do is get the behavior so i’m going To use a treat lure i’m going to put it To her nose i’m gonna guide her on there When all four paws are on there i’m Gonna mark it with a yes and i’m gonna Give her a treat and then break and she Gets off if you have separate words for Your markers and release words it’s not A big deal again they don’t speak English as long as you’re being Consistent that’s what’s important so I’m going to say i’m going to get her to Do it again so just lure her on there All four feet are on there yes reward Free or break whatever your word is Now that i’m pretty sure i can get the Behavior i’m going to start to add the Word so i’m going to say the word first I’m going to lure her on there when She’s on there and mark it and then i’m
Going to break her so i’m not working on Duration right now i’m just working on Getting the behavior so i’m going to say Place so we’re on here yes Break Place Yes break So now what i’m doing instead of luring Her the whole way with the food in my Hand like this Now i’m going to put the treat in these Three fingers i’m going to close it like This so now i’ve got my food lower in my Hand but i’m changing it to my hand Signal so now i’ve got my food in my Three fingers close it i’ve got my Pointer so i’m going to say place She gets on there yes reward i’m going To reload Put one treat in those three fingers Close it break Place Yes Break Place Yes Break Now when i know i’m ready to go the next Step is when the dog starts to offer Going on the bed they understand that This is a good place so just like that i Would say yes but as soon as those four Feet on there break she gets to come off So once my dog is offering the behavior
Now that i know that i put enough value Into that behavior that i can start Working on duration distractions and all Those other things yes Break Place yes Break so now i’m going to start adding Some distance between me and the place So at first i was right up on the place And now i’m going to start slowly Walking away from the place so again to Start i’d be really close place Yes Break i just take a little step get her Out of the way place Yes Break a little step Place If she gets stuck again she’s already Offered it so i let her work through it Break and i’m not going to add any more Distance i’m going to work there place Let her think She’s offering some other behaviors That’s not going to get her paid i keep My hand signal like that Yes as long as she’s thinking i’m going To let her problem solve break Place Yes Break That step again place Yes So even though she didn’t get all the
Way on there that’s fine i marked her For making that break Place So didn’t mark her there not going to Reward that Yes Break Place Yes So i marked it when all four feet are on There and then she kind of came off to Get the treat so i still want to reward Her for all four on there so what i did I just used the food to kind of push her Back on and i rewarded her when all four Feet are on there break A little more distance Place Yes Break Place Yes Good girl and then i’m gonna add on a Good note so i don’t want to just keep Drilling this until she’s bored and Isn’t hungry anymore so i got a couple Good ones i’m gonna go ahead and and Call that a lesson good girly so now That i’ve built some motivation into the Place command now we’re gonna start Adding our stay some people teach an Implied stay which means if i tell you Sit you’re going to sit and hold that Position until i give you another
Command i use the word stay just Basically to give the dog a little bit Of extra information they’re going to be There for a while So I already have a dog that’s motivated For the food i’ve got my place right Here i do have my dog on a leash um so That way if they do make a mistake i can Stop them from accessing any Distractions or any other rewards so Even though i didn’t ask her i’m still Going to tell her break and kind of Guide her off so the first thing i’m Going to do i’m going to do my i’m Handstand to set her to the place place She goes on there yes i’m going to Reward her Break she gets to come off Now i’m going to use my good as i keep Going so now i’m going to send her place Good Good She’s very awkward so she offers it down I’m going to go ahead and reward her if She offers a sit i’m going to go ahead And order so any kind of calm behaviors I’m going to reward for being on her Place Good Good I’m going to release her break and she Gets to come off So again i just was rewarding calm
Behavior so again you can see she’s Motivated for a place that’s what i’m Looking for break So now she’s at the point where if she Offers it before i tell her i’m not Going to reward her for it i want to get It on cue Place Good Get my treats ready to go that way i can Do rapid fire again i’m going to wait For a calm behavior Good Good And i’m trying to feed her low in Position so if i give her the treat high She’s more likely to jump up for it i Don’t want to reward up so I’m going to reward her for that down in That down position so fast and low Good fast and low Good fast and low And i’m going to break her before she Makes a mistake break If my dog gets stuck i can just use my Leash to help them off Place Good Good Good Break So this is where i’m working on duration You notice i’m right up next the dog i’m Not walking away i’m not adding any
Distractions i’m just adding some Duration so at first i’m rewarding those Calm behaviors and now i’m going to Start asking for more time between the Treats so i’m going to reward her every Five seconds for 15 seconds for example So i’m going to center place Good one treat for going on there One treat for the down good And now i’m gonna wait So even if she’s in the down i’m gonna Wait five seconds so one two Three Four five good One Two three four five good One two three four five good Break and she gets come off if you Notice i’m not rewarding her for the Release they already want to get off so I’m going to add all my reinforcement For the stay if i have a dog that Constantly gets stuck in this day and I’m having to use a leash to get them Off then i’ll reward for the break but i Generally reward just for the stay they Already want to be off so i want to make That more reinforcing place Good so now when she goes on her place I’m waiting for her to do the down so Now places go to your bed and down So she gets up no reward Good reward now i’m going to do every 10 Seconds for 20 seconds so i’m adding
More time between the treats Good One two three four five six seven eight Nine ten good She gets up i don’t care Good one two Three four five six seven eight nine ten Reward break So i’ll start to work on this again you Can see how much motivation i’ve put in That place that’s what i’m looking That’s what i’m looking for So again if i didn’t tell her to go i’m Not gonna reward her i’m also not gonna Correct her if she gets off If i want to i can step on my leash and That way she doesn’t go over there and Just keep getting on and not getting Reinforced So my goal for duration is to build up To one minute for one treat so initially I’m rewarding every five seconds for 15 Seconds then every 10 seconds for 20 Seconds then maybe every 10 seconds for 30 seconds and then Uh maybe every 15 seconds for 30 seconds And then every For 30 seconds reward every 15 seconds And then every 15 seconds for a minute Again i’m just slowly starting to add More time that the dog is staying on There once i can tell them to go and i’m Getting one minute for just one treat And then breaking now i can start
Working on my duration or i’m sorry my Distractions or my distance but i Usually work on my duration first if i Can’t get my dog to sit there for a Minute i can’t leave them and walk Across the yard Because it’s going to take me more time To put them back so for duration i’m Just right up next to the dog i’m just Rewarding them and just starting to add More and more time between the treats Break no treats for getting off so after I’ve done my duration i can get my dog Stay in the place for one minute for one Treat i’m gonna start working on my Distractions The key when you’re working distractions Is you have to be faster than your dog So i’m going to send my dog to the place And i’m going to start putting my Distractions behind me i want to be able To stop my dog from accessing those Rewards if i tell them to stay and i Drop a treat and my dog hurries up and Grabs the treat off the ground stay Basically learns to be faster than mom And i don’t want them to learn that so I’m going to go ahead and send her to The place i’m going to have the leash in My hand ready to go so place Good Pick up my leash so i want to hold it Short attention free so i want to be Able to quickly stop my dog if they get
Off but i don’t want to be holding them Back from From making that mistake mistakes are Part of learning so what i’m going to do Is i’m going to drop my treat where Again i can be faster than the dog so I’m not going to drop it off right where They can dive bomb for it so i’m going To drop it behind me i’m going to tell Her stay do my hand signal and then drop My treat She’s going to stop so i just use my Leash to get her back She stays i reward her so even if she Made a mistake I’m going to reward her for when she’s Right so again leash is short she gets Off Offered a calm behavior i’m gonna reward Her Offer to calm behavior i’m gonna reward Her i’m gonna do my distraction again She got off put her back you can also Mark it with a no it’s just hard for me To talk and train at the same time Off to calm behavior reward her Drop my treat again The fly distracter i’m gonna reward her Drop it again stay Good that time she stayed back on her Own i’m gonna reward her Again my leash is tension free but short Stay Good reward her
Stay Nope Good Reward her Stay Good reward her for staying Stay good reward her for staying And now i’m going to try to pick up the Treats stay If she gets off use a leash get her back And everything good comes to you for Staying so all of these treats come to Her for staying so i’m not going to Break her to the treats I’m going to reward her for staying and You can see my leash i’m ready to stop Her if she decided to get up I can do another stay if i want stay Good she didn’t go for it again Everything good comes to you for staying Stay Comes to her Comes to her and then i’m gonna release Her break Good job she can sniff for the food There’s no food on there so again she’s Not going to get reinforced for coming Off everything good happens for going on There if my dog is constantly making Mistakes with my distractions i want to Try to make them easier You should have success so if i’m Bouncing a ball and on a scale of one to Ten the ball is like my dog’s absolute
Favorite i’m not going to start with a Ball i’m going to start with something That’s lower value so that way they can Be successful i want to start low and Then go high so if my dog can’t stay While i drop a kibble on the ground good Luck dropping a hamburger or a piece of Steak or bouncing a ball if that’s Higher value so you want to start with Low value Distractions and then slowly build up to Higher value distractions or higher Level distractions so now that we’ve Worked on our duration and our Distractions now we’re gonna start Working on our distance so we’re gonna Send our dog to place and it’s gonna Look like a little dance we’re gonna Take one step back go back and reward Two steps back go back on reward and Then a break and then we’re gonna do two Steps go back and reward three steps go Back in order so we’re just gonna slowly Start adding more and more distance Between us and the dog so we’re gonna Get her to go foster place Good Tell her to stay give her a hand signal Like a stop sign if she offers a calm Behavior i’m gonna go back and reward Her So i’m gonna take a step back go back And reward Two steps
Go back and reward Three steps Nope she gets off use my leash put her Back Tell her to stay again Take two steps go back and reward so i’m Gonna go back and make it slightly Easier for her Take three steps Go back and reward good she was about to Offer a calm behavior stay one two three Good there she goes Now i’m gonna release her break Please Good Stay Good offered a down i’m gonna reward her For that Stay Nope marked it with a no go back and Reward her Stay Offered a day or a sit i’m gonna go back And reward her Stay Go back and reward her Good offer to set Go reward her Good Reward Good Break Good now i’m going to start to walk Around in a circle around her
Place Good Stay So now that i can walk to the end of my Leash Now i’m going to start to make a big Circle around and sometimes i’ll just do A couple little side steps and go back And reward her Remind her to stay Go to the end of my leash Nope so marked it with a nail i’m going To put her back on there good stay Good She’s very sensitive so you see just With my nose she’s like oh gosh and she Runs back on there so that’s okay i Don’t need to follow up with any kind of Leash corrections or anything i can just Mark it with a no and that’s enough to To Upset her enough that she doesn’t want To do it again stay Nope Good so there she fixed herself on just My verbal no so i’m going to go ahead And reward her for that Stay i’m not going to do that often Because i don’t want my dog to learn get Off get back on get a treat Stay Good Break All right so now that we’ve worked on
Our duration distractions and distance Separately now we’re going to put them All together So we’re going to work on Uh distractions with me at a longer Distance for a longer period of time so We’re going to center place Good Stay Good offer to calm behavior i’m going to Reward her Stay And now i’m farther away and add my Distraction stay So i’m going to wait till she offers Another d-o-w-n And then i’m going to reward her Nope So i let her kind of decide if she was Going to make a mistake or if she was Going to offer that calm behavior again Good Stay Now this is where if your dog is doing Well you can go ahead and drop your Leash that way i can add more distance Stay Good offer to calm behavior Go in our order Good Stay Good girl And now again everything good is going To come to her so remind her to stay
Treats come to her If you don’t want to give all of the Ones that you’ve dropped so there she Was right on the edge so she’s either Gonna could make a mistake and i can Mark out the no or she was gonna offer Calm behavior so she offered a calm so i Rewarded her for that thank you so much For watching i hope everybody enjoyed Today’s episode let me know what you Think about it in the comments below of Course as always like and subscribe and We’ll see you next time
