Dealing with an aggressive dog is an Incredibly stressful situation for both The owners and the dogs involved and as A canine behaviorist I specialize in Helping people with aggressive cases now Yes it is a very Advanced topic but There absolutely are things that you can And should be doing right away that I'm Going to help you with in today's video Now I'm gonna give you four tips in Today's video and all four are Incredibly important but the first three Are what I would call more management Strategies strategies that are going to Allow you and the dog to remain safe to Not make sure that a disaster happens Which is going to end up in that dog Being euthanized then the fourth Strategy is going to be the actual Fundamentals when it comes to finding a Solution to the problem a long-term fix That will actually set you and your dog Up for Success not just safety now the First thing which is the immediate thing That I put into place whenever I'm Working with an aggression case is Absolutely crate training crate training Allows you to keep the aggressive dog That you may be working with or dealing With controlled and safe within the home If the dog is in the crate the vast Majority of the time they cannot be Doing anything Significantly damaging this is no
Exceptions especially if there's Children or vulnerable people in the Home now the second thing that is Equally as important as crate training Is muzzle training when we're talking About aggression with dogs 99.9 times out of 100 the aggression is Formed here with the dog's mouth and With these absolute Whoppers in form of The dog's teeth and when we're looking At a dog as big as Eileen here they Absolutely can do devastating damage and Harm the way that you control that Variable to keep them you other people And other dogs safe is muzzle training If the dog is wearing a muzzle when They're not inside the crate you can Control the variables it doesn't stop Potential aggressive outbursts but it Stops those aggressive outbursts being Absolute disasters that oftentimes Require immediate euthanasia of an Aggressive dog so they're the two things That you can start immediately and are Definitely much more wrapped around Management and control rather than a Solution step three is where we start to Move into Solutions with step four being The actual solution and step three is Around teaching your dog a loose lead Walk if everybody taught their dog how To walk nicely on a loose lead and went On that kind of pack migration with Their dog every single day the vast vast
Majority of problem behaviors would Disappear overnight if there was one Thing that I could bottle up and gift to Absolutely every dog owner around the World it would be the instant ability to Teach their dog how to go on a walk on a Loose lead he it's not just about the Walk that for me is the cherry on top It's the knock-on ramifications that are Important if your dog is on a loose lead Following your guidance and Direction it Means they're looking up to you for Guidance and Direction and when your dog Is looking at you for guidance and Direction focusing on you for guidance And Direction no matter what is going on Around them because they're focusing on You that means that your communication Pathways go from zero shut full of Friction no ability to tell your dog What you do want and what you don't want To opening out those communication Pathways wide open where it becomes Effortless to communicate back and Forward with your dog with both what you Do want and what you don't want and that Fourth tip where we're actually going to Have long-term fixes is to these Problems and nothing to do with Management there's nothing to do with The dog it's nothing to do with Necessarily what you're gonna do with Your dog like loose lead talking but It's all around you the fourth tip if
You want to be able to deal with Rehabilitate successfully a aggressive Dog is that you must become a calm Assertive leader with your dog the vast Majority of aggression from dogs stems Because that dog does not know any Better that dog does not have anybody in Its life that it knows it can look up to For guidance and Direction when he faces Or she faces an obstacle out in life That creates a little bit of fear or Uncertainty whether it is on a fearful Passive dog or maybe even an independent Dominant dog if they don't have a leader In their life clearly communicating the Appropriate way to manage these Obstacles or environmental stimuli they Will make decisions for themselves and It's those decisions that they're making For themselves which is the aggression That you're seeing which is the problem Behavior that you're desperate to fix so There is no magic wand there's no magic Tool there's no magic pill that I can Give you to fix problems like this the Solution is you it means that you're in Control and you simply have to dedicate Yourself to the craft of becoming a Better leader and again the beautiful Thing is that you never arrive at that Destination I am nowhere near the canine Leader that I am striving to become I'm Trying to be a better canine leader Every single day with every interaction
I have with every dog I work with my Sole focus is me becoming a better Leader so that I can lead the dogs I Work with better so that they can better Look up to me for guidance and Direction So our communication pathways are wider Open so that I can more effortlessly Tell them what it is that I do want and What it is that I don't want because if I can master that skill if I can become A better canine leader I have better Behaved dogs and I can help all of you Around the world have better behave dogs Yourself but all of it is useless if It's not built on the foundation of Leadership and that is why I say time And time again that if you love your Dogs you must lead your dogs because Whether you like it or not leadership is Love
