Dogs die all the time from accidentally Falling in the pool without your panics Hey folks welcome to another exciting Episode of adventures in dog training With american standard dog training and American overwatch canine services and Now also diy k9.com now check this out This is gabby she’s about a year-old Female rottweiler we are going to teach Her how to swim all right more Importantly not just how to swim but how To come out of the pool should she fall In and dogs die all the time from Accidentally falling in the pool and Swimming around and swimming around and Not knowing how to get out And then they die of exhaustion to drown So we need to teach her How to come in and out of the pool and That’s what today’s lesson is about so Stay tuned we’re going to teach it to You guys right now [Applause] All right so gabby’s food drive as you Can probably tell is uh pretty high she Always always had super high food drive And this starts with just getting them Comfortable around the pool So i’m gonna just see where she’s at i Haven’t seen her in a long time and i Have no idea how she’s around pools we Are in south florida a lot of pools And you can see she says i love hot dogs But i don’t love them that much no i
Don’t So we’re gonna try to do this as fun and As positive as possible ideally we like To teach them to come in one foot two Foot three foot it’s a pretty steep drop Off here this girl can swim she’s just Not confident not comfortable around the Water and you can see we put a little Pressure on her she’s gonna say hell no I’m not going in that water so we’re Gonna try to do it the fun way i don’t Think that’s gonna happen but this is For her own good we need to get her to Be Comfortable And confident in the water they don’t Generalize well and what i mean by that Is if i teach her to go into the pool And i put her right here She will learn pretty quickly to swim From there to here not on her own she’s Not going to automatically know hey this Is the way i came in she’s gonna panic If she’s stressed out she’s not Confident she’s gonna panic and look for The closest wall well if she tries to go For this wall here there’s no way her Big butt’s getting out it’s not gonna Happen there’s no way for her to get Herself out of the water so we have to Teach her What we call mental and visual pathways That if you’re there This is the way out if you’re there this
Is the way out well that’s just right Here this is a huge pool we got a Teacher from all corners of the pool From every single part of the pool no Matter where she might fall in The way you get out is to come to the Steps we got to teach you where the Steps are now the good news is This pool has a huge ledge on that side So we’re going to teach her to get Herself to the ledge no matter where you Are either make it to the steps or make It to the ledge we’re going to make this As fun as possible She’s a big girl let me tell you There you go good girl that’s all i’m Asked for give me one step you see how Hard she fought that she fought that With everything she had Good girl Okay Good girl make her comfortable with that Now One of the other ways you can get a dog To be a little more comfortable and Confident going in is you do this on a Very hot day and they don’t have a lot Of fight left in them And they’re hot they’ll be super happy To get into the water on that first step Drop in uh it’s not a hot day out at all It’s actually kind of cool out so that’s Not going to happen and i don’t want to Just completely tire her out she’s going
To need her strength to swim because We’ve got a lot of swimming ahead of us So All right we got one step done all right We’re gonna go for the next step now This one’s gonna be stressful for her She’s gonna get a lot deeper There we go A little does she know this is for her Own good there we go All right the next step We’re gonna go in and she’s gonna have To swim but we’ll make it short and Sweet my job is to let her always find Her way out always find her way up Now she panics A lot of panicking there I want her to go out one way and one way Only a lot of panic there and you can See how All that energy she spent in just what 10 seconds Imagine a couple minutes of that all That panicky not good so wash rinse Repeat Okay She is not a graceful swimmer give her a Little break and then i’m gonna get Right back into it i’m gonna make sure When she hits the deck that she doesn’t Go underwater and get any uh water in Her nose so it’s not gonna be fair for Her And again panicking still trying to go
To this edge so i’m letting her What we would call free shape i’m trying To and the first one i had to steer her A lot this one i’m trying to take that Steering out like You have to figure out how to get out And i’m providing as little as possible As much as needed to get her out Definitely coming in easier Good girl a lot less pulling why because On the first two You’re coming in whether you want you or Not don’t want to be mean but let’s go Come on baby though Now I’m gonna just try to get her to be a Little more calm in the water I need to be a little more confident in The water So we’re holding her up There we go There you go very nice now which way are You gonna go because i ain’t gonna get It She’s convinced that’s the way out she Must have maybe got out oh in fact He had told me They were able to get her into there And then from there they got her out so She got one rep Literally a life-saving rep She got in there and was able to get out So i think she’s pretty convinced that That’s the way out let’s see what she
Does There we go Good girl I like this i like this Good girl Good girl you got it yes you did There you go Look at that Yeah Cute girl It’s like a Like a submarine So we’re gonna go maybe a little bit Deeper and then we’re gonna actually Start Dumping her in the water To mimic if she fell in Let’s go I’m okay if she goes out that way Look at that Little Better chill out there I think that’s going to be the recipe For success because There’s so much wall on that side Let her catch your breath Do a few more reps and i would say we Are done and now i’m going to show the Owners What we’ve been doing and then they have To wash rinse repeat this all right We’re now in the middle of the pool got The owner out and we’re getting those Reps in and there she goes
[Applause] Come on [Applause] Perfect raise her up good girl Good girl Good girl Yeah and we give her a break that’s her Reward for making it over here This is the part that scares me though Right eight feet deep there is No way out for her Over here so she would have dropped it On this side this is probably the Scariest part because the steps are Nowhere to be found she’s not going to Find those steps She has to be you have to understand she Drops in It’s very likely She is going to look to come immediately Turn around and try to get out this way And she’ll spend all of her energy Trying to get out this way and that’s no Good so we’re going to be here to Support her And so we have to be the bad guy I want to be here The day she falls in which is right now So we’re gonna Literally throw her in Make the landing as soft as possible I have the line to help her But she’s gotta get out that way that is The only way she gets out so we’re gonna
Help her do that we may have to do this A few times until she knows that’s the Way out none of this is going to help You So Bear with us as we put her in To my point That’s not going to work so now we have To help her Call it Good girl come on baby Good girl Big celebration oh good girl Good girl yeah that’s it that’s it that Went pretty smooth all right so i’m Famous in my dog training i’m on the uh One more rep just one more rep so this Time we have the owners over here Because we were george and the owners Were also thinking wonderfully That maybe she’s shooting to the other Side on her own Because she sees her loved ones over There well now loved ones are over here This kind of worst case scenario we drop Her in here she’s still gonna make the Connection to go to that side let’s hope For the best come on big girl It’s getting easier and easier to put Her in Thank god There you go mama So you’re making that turn Good girl
Good girl look how much more confident She is so that’s what it’s all about if She’s not panicking she would swim a lot Longer good girl gabby good girl girl Baby yeah All right that’s not bad that’s not bad That’s not bad excellent yeah i mean She’s swimming the way if she swims like That she could swim for a lot longer and The hope that she finds her way out Washrooms for peach keeps going out the Way she’s supposed to Um but man that first time we went in What a catastrophe you can see with the Panic and the flailing of the arms she’s All but drowning now Chances are she drops in somewhere She’ll find her way off mission Accomplished Pretty cool huh [Music] [Applause] [Applause] You
