Thanks for joining us for today’s video. This episode Bethany from PhDogs will be demonstrating the step-by-step process she likes to use when teaching a dog the Leader/Halti.
Gentle Leader or Halti: This collar is designed to control the dog’s head as well as giving you the ability to close the dog’s mouth when lifting up. Just like any training tool, this can be a safe option when working on specific issues.

In today’s video we are in riverside California with bethany perdom from ph Dogs to do some dog training if you’ve Been looking for pet insurance look no Farther than prudent pet because staying Ahead of the problem is half the battle Their pet insurance plans cover a Variety of needs for your pet with a ton Of customizable options plus if you sign Up through my link in the description You’ll get five percent off Today we’re going to talk about head Halters so i’ve got two brands here this Is a gentle leader and this one is Called a halti Head halters are designed to work the Same as like a horse halter where if you Can control the head the rest of the Body is going to follow i call this a Strictly management tool so if you need To manage a dog and you need that extra Control these are fantastic they are Very difficult to fade so if i’m trying To Teach loose leash walking and my goal is To get my dog on a flat collar This is one of the more difficult tools To fade the reason why they’re difficult To fade is it’s very obvious when They’re on with A Prong collar or a choke chain or a Martingale or any of the collars on the Dogs i can kind of loosen them up where
They’re on but the dogs can’t feel them With this they know when there’s Something on their nose so it’s a little Bit more difficult to fade away um so We’ll start with the halti this is my Favorite headhalter the reason why this One is my favorite is because this Bottom so this is where the leash Attaches here it’s got a safety clips This goes to the dog’s regular collar so If i was gonna put this on my dog this Part goes behind the Behind the ears and this part goes over The nose so on my dog it look like this My leech leash attaches to this spot and This attaches to my dog’s flat collar as A safety so if they got this off i still Have my dog So the part that goes over the nose it Has like this kind of pulley system so When the leash is loose It’s nice and loose around their mouth If they start to pull my leash gets Tight it actually gets snug around their Nose And then i can turn their head away so The idea behind this was wherever the Head goes the rest of the body is going To follow so if i can control the head And my dog were to lunge i can Physically turn their head around and They don’t have the momentum to drag me Around this is good if you have kids That want to be able to walk your dog or
An elderly person or maybe you just had Arm surgery or you have a giant dog Again if you can control a horse you can Control a dog so this is the halti head Halter the other one is the more common Name and this is the gentle leader Gentle leaders have one part that goes Behind the head and the other part goes Behind the nose so you can see it’s a Little bit simpler than the Than the halti and it’s got this little Lever this little lever right here can Adjust to make it More snug around the nose or looser Around the nose so when the dog is Wearing the gentle leader they should be Able to open their mouth and pant they Should not be able to paw it over their Nose so we’ll get it fitted to the dog So you can look at it and on this one so If i have it fit like this for my Dog mouth My leash would attach down here so again As the dog turns as i pull the dog’s Head is going to make that turn this is A gentle leader this is milan muan is a Lab puppy he’s very excited he loves Everybody and everything Which causes him to pull a lot when he Sees people on walks or just in general So He just came started his boarding and Training program and he’s learned to Kind of throw his weight around so
Whenever he wants something he just kind Of lowers the set of Gravity and kind of buckles down and Pulls so his owners asked us to teach Him how to wear a gentle leader So i’ve got my halti here and i already Have it fit for him So the back strap is going to go right Behind that skull on his The bump on his skull so right behind His ears and this part is going to go Over his nose So They’ll sit still long enough If you’re fighting with your dog over This you can always put some treats in Your hand I’m going to step on his leash so i’ve Got some food right here so i’m going to Kind of lure him hey So that way while he’s eating i can slip It over his nose And buckle it behind his ears so pick Your battles Now that i’ve got it on him I’m going to attach my clip to the Bottom here And again this is a backup so this would Go to my regular flat collar So now that i’ve got him hooked up i’m Just going to give him a couple treats For wearing it Good boy So you can see it doesn’t restrict his
Uh breathing it doesn’t restrict his Eating he could still bite somebody if He wanted to this is not a muzzle So now what i’m gonna do is i’m gonna Teach him to give in to that pressure on His nose some dogs as soon as you put This on them they act like a bucking Bronco they’re pawing they’re flipping Around Somewhat normal so don’t freak out if Your dog does that if i have a dog that Really freaks out what i’ll do is Actually put two leashes on them i’ll Put one on their fat collar and one on Their head halter and that way i can Take off tension as needed To get them comfortable but you can see He doesn’t care So I can just give them some treats For the sake of this video i’m not going To but if you were at home you can just Put it on him give him some treats take It off put it on him give him some Treats take it off and just desensitize Him to wearing it that way so what i’m Going to do to start is i’m just going To kind of pull him forward i’ve got my Treats ready to reward him i’m going to Pull him forward And just like a leash pressure as soon As he walks towards me i’m gonna mark it And reward him yes good boy Good boy
So this is a good example of why Although they’re called gentleters i Usually don’t use these a lot of times Owners think that these are better for The dogs but the dogs usually hate them So it takes a little bit of time getting Them used to it So i’m gonna do the same thing level the Body he moves with me i’m a reward So i’m gonna pull this now he’s being Really good So yes Reward Good so just walking around not Fussing with it Good i’m gonna reward him Yes Yes Good So just walking around not messing that That’s what i’m rewarding And now i’m going to get him to pull so I know if i throw a tree he’s going to Go dive bomb for it so i’m going to get Him to pull again he’s probably going to Throw a fit i’m just going to kind of Ride it out and when he gets back to me I’m going gonna reward him i’m gonna go Ahead and reward him for sitting Because he’s usually so crazy so i’m Gonna toss my treat Yes So i marked the moment that he turned His head around towards me
So pull yes reward If he walks up to the tree nicely i’ll Let him get it Good job i can toss another tree this Way Yes Good boy Walks up nicely i’ll let him get it Yes Good boy Good i’m gonna reward that just because He didn’t drag me towards it if i can Walk up nicely i’ll let him get it and Same thing with this one Good So now i know this dog loves people Right so i’m going to use a person as a Higher level distraction So don’t say his name so again i’m going To give him instructions so don’t say His name don’t say come but you can Puppy puppy puppy and kind of make kissy Noises at him try to get him to poultry So i’m gonna reward him for saying Because for him Before we started he would have dragged Me over there So again turn his head yes reward And you notice i’m only using two Fingers it does not take a lot of Pressure Except for when he was throwing a giant Fit to get them to turn their head Two fingers
Yes that’s fine Now you can see he’s like i’m not Falling for that one so now i’m gonna Let him go say hi break And i’ll let him get some pets Now i’m going to pull them away Yes Good boy So if they try to lay down i just kind Of pull their head up yes and i’ll mark And reward them i don’t want them to Learn how to get it off once they learn How to get it off it’s very difficult to Keep it on them Yeah i’m just going to let you kind of Pet him and now i’m going to pull him Away so two fingers pull pull yes Market reward so his head is going to Turn whichever way i pull so i need to Keep that in mind so if i’m over on this Side and i pull him his head is going to Go that way so i want to make sure that The leash is always towards me because That’s yes that’s the direction that He’s going to turn I also do leash pressure up for sit so Once the dog is giving into the leash Pressure so again if it’s on this side i Need to pull him This way Good boy So i never want to be like this i never Want to have it like this because that Way if i pulled his head’s going to turn
Away from me and i don’t want to twist His neck around so the leash should Always be closest to me So the next thing that i’m going to do Is teach them that when i pull up that Means sit so just like i lured the dogs I’m going to pull up with the halter and Lure at the same time Pull up with the halter lure at the same Time Pull up with the halter good starting to Fade my lure Now i’m going to try just pulling up With the halter set relax attention so As soon as he does it i relax my leash Pull up he sits relax reward As soon as he gets he does it he gets to Get out of it good reward release Leash reward Release Break Yes Break Pull up Good relax Now i’m going to add some distractions So now i’m going to throw my treat on The ground Pull up Good Good Good Break Pull up he sits
Now i can actually start my stay with This too this is really good if you have A super super energetic dog when they See other dogs this is a really nice Tool to be able to help you control them Without fighting with them so this is my Distraction If he gets up i just pull up relax Distraction he stays i reward him My leash is short tension free Distraction Again i’m allowing him to make the Mistake even either he’s going to stay In his sit or he’s going to break i’m Going to wait to see what he’s going to Offer Good he’s not going forward i can reward Him break So the keys to this is don’t let them Get it off And don’t pull in a direction that they Can’t go so if i tighten up my leash That’s my cue for my dog to sit i will Also teach them when i pull down that’s Also for a down but i want them to move In my direction so if i pull forward i Want him to easily go forward If i turn this way head should easily Turn that way and you can see from him Bucking and bronking and putting on the Brakes and really kind of dragging me Backwards now i can barely pull him and He comes forward Once your dog understands the turns and
Everything then i can actually start Using it for healing And that’s where again the leash should Be closest to the dog side I would start walking i can reward my Dog for staying in position Change directions And i can do my pull up for my auto set So least short tension free my dog gets Out of position change directions when i Stop pull up auto sits Oh Boy when you’re first teaching the dog With a head halter it’s not uncommon for Them to have a reaction when you’re Trying to give teach them to give into That kind of pressure so some dogs and You’ll see it in this video when you Start to pull on them they really Put on the brakes and they resist they Have that really strong opposition Reflex the key when they do that is do Not give in so you don’t want to fuel The fire you don’t be going no and Cranking on them but don’t let them Learn that pulling throwing a temper Tantrum throwing a fit gets them out of It so if i have a dog that when i pull They really push back and they really Buck and bronc i’m not going to give in I’m going to keep my steady pressure i’m Going to not give in to them so when They take even a baby step i’m going to Relax my leash and i’m going to reward
Them but do not if you have a dog that Really fights it do not give in to them When they fight if you start it you Really need to finish it unless you have An Extreme case where the dog is Urinating and defecating on themselves And they’re really panicky that tells me That you need to go back to using the Two leashes like we talked about but if You have a dog that puts on the brakes That really pulls keep that steady Tension and Be Be more stubborn they are wait for them To just go okay fine basically that’s What rewarding with a gentle leader or a Head halter is the okay fine moment so As soon as he goes i don’t like it i Don’t like it okay fine yes that’s what I want just give in don’t fight it if i Give in when they are throwing a fit and I go oh sorry poor baby and i go with Them they learn that that works that’s What turns off that pressure so we don’t Want them to learn that fighting it and Pulling harder turns off pressure we Want to get that okay fine and just them Going with them and you’ll see in this Video he very quickly goes from Really fighting and throwing all of his Weight to the point where he actually Gets a couple steps on me to where i can Easily guide him with two fingers thanks
