Okay guys so this is the beginning of my Igp one obedience i cut this into pieces So you guys can get an idea of what Happened With your entire life Um so this is the checking with the Judge as you can see the dog’s a little Bit lucky but he really started with a Strong energy i liked his active Behavior He was a little pushy and a little bit Sloppy in there but It started well uh this is the beginning Of my healing routine 50 paces out about turn You know now here you can see some stuff Starting to happen the dog’s kind of Coming in and out of the position he’s Doing a kind of a hop and a skip Um He’s better in the running there but Then in the walking You can see that he kind of does like Hop skip hop skip pop skip it’s not an Injury it’s what he does when he starts Coming out of the ideal position of Healing i worked really hard to fix that You didn’t really see it crop up too too Much in the ph But you start to see it that up down up Down you can see it like it’s a rhythm But it’s just an ugly rhythm and it Ruins your healing Um and he starts to forge a little more
But he had a good energy so But i do think that this was the Beginning of the problem because Normally in training Uh i will fix this i won’t allow him to Walk like that so It was definitely uh Not normal for me to leave that so Healing through the group You know he was with me good energy Again a little bit funky in the healing But The activity was there so i couldn’t Complain about that Now Uh this is the positions the positions Were pretty much the same as the ph the Sit was actually a little slower this Time As you can see And then the down also a little bit Slower than in the ph So i think this is just too much Training in too short a period of time Too many trials you know that’s what it Is Uh rico He hits me in the recall we already know That he does that i haven’t fixed that Yet Um and that’s on purpose I didn’t want to lose too much speed but As you can see there it wasn’t all that Fast
Um The dumbbells you’re gonna see the Dumbbells because you haven’t seen them Before Uh they were not quite finished when we When we went and did this trial which Was a couple it’s a day ago or two days Ago now So you can watch the dumbbell you can See for yourself so Going out he could be a little faster The pickup he turns a little wide And then he hits me with the dumbbell so Basically every part of it could have Been slightly better the out there I literally started doing outs with him On the dumbbell the day before so that’s Not his fault uh the finish after the Out was pretty good but the out because He kind of pops out off the dumbbell and Then back slightly you know about those Are points so here i set up too close to The jump i’m kicking myself for this Um because he’ll touch the jump on the Way out you can see it Right there But he does clear it on the way back Maybe he needed that lesson Um So again he hits me with the dumbbell Right so it’s all points right there the Finishes are okay Um just you could have had more power This is my send out i was worried about
The send out so i’m actually quite happy With how the send out turned out For me this was the best part So there it goes And you’re [Music] [Applause] All right guys so this is protection All right so here’s where the problems Start you can see here the dog says i Don’t want to heal i want to look at the Blind very atypical um we don’t have This problem really in training So this is this is the beginning big Warning to me like i’m like oh no We’re in trouble here So as you can see here he doesn’t even Sit uh i just send him before the Error can be too visible you know i’m Sure the judge saw that he always rolls Into the blind hackles up Um You know that’s that’s normal every time He goes into blind the first time he Tackles up And he hackles up for everything he’s mr Hackles um so bargainal’s pretty good Nice power it could be a little better That shifting to the elbow side is Something that he’s picked up in the Last week for no reason nothing’s Happened to him i don’t know why he’s Shifting off to the other side it’s just Something he’s decided to do so it’s
Something now that we’re going to have To Spend this summer fixing Because that can become a problem where They’re literally barking on the left Side of the helper here he doesn’t sit All the way And he also got dirty uh you guys didn’t See it because my body blocked but he Actually took a little bite out on the Sleeve and when i approached so that Caused me big points Um so this is the uh healing to the Escape uh again quite uh quite Loosey-greasy he’s not quite with me There I don’t know if you guys can see here The blind blocking Yeah so again in the plots was not good He came right across my feet that’s Something that again we’ve not allowed Into training Uh thrashy there he should be pulling Which we did work on but Again kind of par for the course for This round he wasn’t very good Again moving towards the elbow and Hopping around which kind of Creates a bit of a problem on the Re-attack even though he nailed the Re-attack there Um again that hectic behavior there on The lock-up we’re gonna have to really Um work on that like i said a couple
Weeks ago we did not have this problem I think we pushed a little too hard and A little too far with this guy But you know it was good power there now You can see he he kind of knows at this Point he’s screwing up so when i walk up On him here He looked at me a couple times which he Normally never does in training it’s not Like a problem that we’ve had uh so he Did stop and he sat there which was good This is the healing to the long attack I’m not gonna show the whole thing for Obvious reasons it’s kind of boring Uh but he’s loosey-goosey there so here The long attack Uh he was at about 75 percent of his Normal speed didn’t even really ground Um So i didn’t like that that’s something That we’re gonna have to look into Uh out was a little A little hectic again it wasn’t a Clean-out Barking was good now i don’t i don’t Really have a side transport at this Point um You know it’s it’s a very half-assed Ugly thing there’s that shifting feeling To the elbow side again i absolutely Hate that and i will fix that um so the Side transport is a you know what show You guys are gonna see it shortly So it starts well and then when we start
Walking he completely leaves me and says I’m gonna walk with the help not correct Now i’m not even gonna look properly at Him and there he gets in front of the Helpers So anyways guys you get the idea All right guys so it’s the end of day One of the trial Um Obedience was a score of 88 Tracking Sorry a protection a score of 90. now The obedience I was uh There were no surprises if anything i Was happy with the send out Very straight very fast on the send out That was actually my biggest concern The dumbbells i knew were not finished Um in case you couldn’t tell Sloppy dumbbells Sloppy on the outs Uh not enough power He did touch on the jump going um out on The dumbbell but that was my fault i Actually set up a little too close to The jump i think their jump is a little Bit higher and it looks a little bit Different than most of the jumps that We’ve been training on so You know i’ll give that to him he hits Me on the recalls i know i haven’t fixed That yet um so you know that’s something Now that i’m gonna fix so you know i i
Think my obedience score was fair and You know it wasn’t entirely unexpected Um that’s that’s pretty much the long And the short of it for obedience Protection was a different story so we Got a 90 which is okay but again this is An igp one club trial right so a 90 Is never a good a good story right um Because it it tells you that there’s a Lot of big holes right so what happened Was i noticed in the last week of Training that when i would approach the Dog on a guard he would get a little bit Pushy and dirty with the helper and he Surely did that in the blind when i Approached In fact look when i first walked on the Field with the dog and i saw his eyes Start looking around For the helper instead of for me i knew We had a problem um i knew we had a Problem right from when i first stepped On the field the dog wasn’t with me in Fact i don’t remember a time in his life He wasn’t With me as much and i think quite Frankly look This is the second week in a row that I’m trialing a very young dog very Inexperienced dog Um a lot of pressure was put up put on Him in these last two weeks to get him Finished and he isn’t quite finished Either way so you know it is what it is
And uh i can’t blame him but now i’m Gonna have to make sure that in my Training uh he doesn’t get trial wise And he doesn’t start thinking that you Know he can he can screw me over on Different fields stuff like that so There are things that you can do to fix That so surely i’m going to actually i Already started fixing that uh this Evening by i’ll tell you guys what i did I put my i put an e-collar on the dog or I put a caller that looks like an E-collar i should say on the dog and i Went back on the field after everybody Was done Um and that’s it that’s all i did and And i let him screw me around we went on The field he started his eyes started Looking all over you he disengaged with Me and and wanted to engage on Everything he took a few commands i just Healed him like you know one minute up And down the field a little bit just to Kind of see the behavior and i saw the Same behavior that i saw in the Protection so i said excellent And That’s it i took him took him back and That’s that’s how i’m going to fix the Problem tomorrow i’m going to do the Same thing i’m going to take him on the Field with all his equipment on and i’m Going to let him Um
Get one over on me a lot of dogs get Pretty wise to the trial picture so you Got to do things especially if you’re Doing a lot of trials in a row you’ve Got to do things to Um Make sure the dogs Always are guessing they’re never quite Sure You know if if they’re going to be held Accountable igp is a game of motivation And obligation and if you’ve got no Obligation then all you’ve got is Motivation and there’s a lot of Competing motivators out on the that Field and around the field for a high Drive dog and He’s looking for that self-satisfaction And if he starts to perceive that it’s Not with me because there’s no rewards Right then he’s gonna start looking Around so This is a very common problem in igp and Um you know you train through it so We’re gonna definitely train through That um So yeah i mean i i was disappointed in His protection um he could have been a Lot he’s a dog that the more obedient he Is to me in protection the better he Performs the better he grips Um you know the cleaner he is on outs And everything else so the second dice He healed on the field dirty i said ah
This is going to be a little bit of a Dirty round of protection and it and it Surely was but He outed every time and uh you know we Got through it 90. so That’s what it is now tomorrow we’re Tracking And again i’m pushing him into tracking Beyond where i think I mean look he should be able to get Through the track how well he’s gonna do I don’t know so i’ve i’ve experimented With a few different things in the prep So we’re gonna see kind of how it Translates i think that the conditions Are pretty good so we’re gonna see how It goes tomorrow i’m pretty optimistic i Think we should do okay Hey guys so we got another trial in the Books um Gage is officially igp1 That part is good The part that is bad is we didn’t have The best day today on the tracking field Uh we earned 76 which is like Satisfactory or low satisfactory That’s the equivalent of like a c okay I’ll tell you guys what happened so Uh it was good conditions the grass was Longer than i’m used to but Again like it was really good conditions Nice and wet and early in the morning Um thick grass lush grass so there was No you could clearly see the track like
It wasn’t like an issue of visibility i Mean articles were a little bit buried But that’s about it um So anyways dog hit the scent pad descent Pads the part at the beginning right at The flag and he rocketed off the cent Pad he didn’t spend any time there and Started jogging down the track That’s when i knew we were in trouble The first article then blew over it Kept going and it pretty much Deteriorated from there to the point Where by the second leg his head was up And you know Head checking looking at birds sniffing It was basically a disgusting picture on The track he did indicate on the final Two articles the last one required Handler help from me uh otherwise he Probably would have blown over that as Well And i said to myself what have i been Doing for the last You know five weeks in terms of tracking Have i been preparing my dog what have i Been doing Because you know it’s not my first rodeo So to speak um You know his this dog’s father onyx you Know we always did well on the tracking Field Uh i think the igp one was like 88 Uh igp2 was 100 igp3 was 94. you know it Was never really a show on the
Tracking field with with with my last Dog and and this this track was Reminiscent of you know uh my first Competition dog Uh bastion Uh you know we had some really rough Tracks and and this kind of reminded me Of that like the behavior on the track And stuff Just very lazy fair um No commitment uh it wasn’t at all Representative of the training picture Now with bastian It’s not his fault bastian was for those Of you don’t know i’m talking about my Malwa My old malwa from way back when i think It was like seven years ago six years Ago anyways Yeah with him it was just my Inexperience i didn’t know what to do From a tracking perspective and i was Just kind of blind man in the dark so to Speak but with this dog i i’m pretty Sure i was preparing him properly now i Know i didn’t prove him but i didn’t Think i needed to prove him prior to an Igp one igp one is fairly simple 300 Bases easy conditions you are your own Track layer so i thought we would get Through it um you know you know high 80s Low 90s something like that and Instead we got 76 And it was an embarrassing performance
It looked like i trained maybe once a Week with the dog it was bad so Anyways after um i i endured that Bloodbath And everybody left to go to the other Tracks i decided to take the opportunity To go back on that beautiful tracking Field and have another track and see What the heck is the problem so i set The exact same track Um with a lot less care this time Actually a lot less stomping in the Track so on and so forth three articles So on so forth And i set my dog at the start but this Time when he tried to blow over the Scent pad I I did something to him that caused him To rethink that choice So Then all of us you should have seen him There was our mid 90s track checking Each footprint Nice and concentrated All because i just killed him at the Beginning of the track now in all Fairness to him Um I did not really practice without food So much at the beginning because i was Very concerned with maintaining a Powerful performance But in this case um
I i think i went too far into the Positive side and i didn’t make enough Obligation before trialing and just like Kind of in protection he took a little Bit advantage of me And He kind of knew there was no rules so at First i was like really does he like Just not know what to do but when i ran The second track with no food on it The same as the first and i didn’t Reward him on the first article i was Like okay so this is just a it’s a it’s A conscious choice like oh there’s There’s no rules here so what i’ve got To do now is Look my dog is a reactive dog he’s very Cognizant of the environment some dogs Aren’t some dogs you know they’re just So task oriented they love working so Much that they just focus exclusively on That to the exclusion of all else My dog obviously young dog inexperienced But very cognizant of the environment And i think he really cued in on the Fact that this wasn’t a normal training Picture and that’s where we ran into Problems um you know and he decided that There was no rules so What i did was like i said i did two Training tracks after that in which i Really made my point that i don’t care If there’s food there or not I don’t care if you think we’re in a
Different place or not you will track Properly and i’m very happy with the Fact that he actually was able to Because that does mean that he Understands if he was like still Confused or quitting or then i would Know that You know okay we got a big problem here But what we have is a proofing problem And that’s okay proofing It’s a pain in the ass because now i Can’t just track by myself especially Leading up to trial i’m really gonna Have to make sure that i i kind of Simulate trial conditions got like three Four other people there at least and you Know A fake judge and all that stuff but The good news is that Um you know it he knows his job Right he just chose not to do so i just Have to manufacture a situation where he Knows his job now jumping back quickly Obedience i i deserved every point that I lost in obedience i was actually very Happy with the send out even though 88 Is nothing to to write home about it was Good for for where we were at and um you Know it exposed some things that i was Already kind of knowing that i had to Fix so no complaints on the obedience Protection like i said earlier i lost The dog um In my opinion he peaked
Two weeks ago I peaked him too early in protection he Just and i was almost surprised because Like we were working with uh a very uh a Very well-known kind of world level guy Uh who was over here from europe for a Few days so we were working with him and He was just killing it um the protection Was phenomenal the control was perfect The uh The power was there And then over the last week and a half i Noticed he started going out of control He started you know offering some some Bad behaviors like you know barking more To the elbow side of the sleeve and Getting dirty around me and really not Healing committing to the healing And that’s that’s where we we had a Problem then we trialled and it was Pretty much the same picture if not a Little worse So What do we learn from this Um i i peaked him too early in Protection i peaked him too early uh i Think he was at his optimal about two Weeks ago and then we kind of started Going over the line a little bit over The last two weeks and um i think if i Had trialed him in terms of protection Two weeks ago the i would have gotten Like easily a 95 96 in the protection so It is what it is
Um now i’ll be much more careful on the Next trial about peaking him too early And um i’m also gonna be you know look Now i don’t know what i’m gonna trial Next i’m gonna kind of feel my way Through it um i was really gonna back Off training for a bit after this trial Because i went so hard but you know what I’ve decided that i’m gonna kind of i’m Gonna lower the pace but i’m gonna Maintain the pace and we’re just gonna Chip away at it every day and we’re Really gonna focus on on some Fundamentals and i’m hoping that uh the Next trial prep instead of me Frantically working to train behaviors Instead i’ll be working more on proofing Behaviors which is always a better place To be in in terms of uh trial setting All right guys so long story short You know we got to get back on the on The field we got to get get get to Trading we got a lot of things to fix You know uh wasn’t the outcome that i Wanted but you learn from these Experiences and uh i’ve definitely Learned and i plan to come back again Next time and you know solve this puzzle And and make it work uh big thank you to The club that hosted this trial Hosting trials is a pain in the butt uh I know from what i used to be members of Uh various clubs so i’d like to thank The club the members were all very
Welcoming very nice people um Oxford uh Working dog club i believe is their name Oxford working dog club um and uh i Think they’re out in woodstock for those Of you that are wondering nice people Good trainers um it was a very well put On event so i appreciate the effort they Went to there And um Yeah back back to the grind guys we’ll Be in touch
