Is the last dog we're ever gonna have And and we want to be able to take them Places and we're going for a ride if you Can Master the walk with your dog Everything else falls into place [Music] Folks welcome back to another episode of Adventures in dog training with American Standard dog training and DIY k9.com and Check this out we have someone here Today that we are going to be getting to Know on camera so that we can follow Along and show you how we teach Mr Jedi To be better uh just to be a better dog Well Jedi is a good dog most of the time But he has a prey drive where he goes After iguanas or ducks or other dog he Sees he gets excited and he's almost 80 Pounds so he's very difficult to hold And we want him to be able to take them Everywhere and for him to behave and That's the issue right now he is a Definite Heinz 57 his dad was a black Cur his mom was a plot hound and they Say he's got a little bit of everything In him staffy of course he's got Everything so we'll be working today on Mostly just the walk let's get I walk Under control if you can Master the wolf With your dog everything else falls into Place what we guarantee is by the end of This he's going to be walking Beautifully what would you typically Walk him on what tool Gentle Leader I
Got it in my pocket okay and The mighty paw uh Martingale collar That's one of ours or this is something I know I got it perfect I watch I watch Your videos I watch all your videos we want to be Able to take this dog everywhere this is The last dog we're ever gonna have and And we want to be able to take him Places we want to be able to enjoy them We want to be able to walk down the Street with him I watched all your Home Depot you know I watched her outside the Dog park I want them I want them I want That kind of dog take them to the Restaurant put him in a downstay already Has been to another trainer two-week Board and train and was taught on the Prong collar typically when you do a Two-week board and train those are old School trainers I'm not saying there's Anything wrong or right about them but They're doing compulsion style training But anything done in two weeks you're Skipping the treats the other fifty Percent of the positive only trainers Who will only use treats and not use uh Tools to maintain obedience we're Balanced trainers we use a little bit of Everything everything from A to Z so That's what he's going to get today Whether it's hot dogs prong collar it's The yin and the Yang if you do good you Get paid if you do bad we pressure you
Until you do good so we can pay you Again half of the equation is to train The dog maybe less than that it's Probably 25 percent of the work is Training the dog the other 75 percent is To train the owners because even if I Train your dog personally that I make That dog a Ferrari if I hand you the Keys to a Ferrari but I don't teach you How to drive it you're going to grind The gears you're going to blow out the Transmission you're going to crash it Into a wall and it's no longer a Ferrari So we have to teach you how to maintain It let's walk him on this first let's Get a baseline with no Gentle Leader Then we'll put the Gentle Leader on kind Of use that as like a before and after And then we'll switch over to the latest And greatest not really we'll do the Prong column we'll do a comparison of All three options so let's just get a Baseline of what that walk looks like Now okay just do your thing come on Hey most folks will be pretty happy with That he is I said 95 of the time he's Good until he sees iguana dog or a duck Would you would you ever take him right Now like in a Home Depot would you be Comfortable doing that You're concern being he would uh he Wouldn't behave so he bark at people Necessarily if there's if there's a Distraction or something and if he
Decides to go for whatever reason I'm Not necessarily you could get pulled Over yeah Yeah he's already I've already you know Had an issue where he yanked my back out One time and she's under uh recovering From a fractured ankle so we have to Make sure that both of us can handle the Dog safely do you have a preference on Color you've got gold we've got the Black And the silver Black I think I like the black tea I Would go for that for sure these are gym Hodges leashes this is a plug for Jim Hodges right here because we love Jim Hodges Jim Hodges is a amazing dog Trainer located in North Carolina been Training dogs I think over 30 years and He developed this little time the best Leash you've ever seen uh we'll show you This blue one how does that feel Compared to what we would call a typical Nylon you can't find the stuff in the Pet stores he just you know he just uh Right now Burns you yeah he did yeah so This material here this nylon When they get to going and they pull This will just it's like a rope burn Jim Hodges leashes uh we're big fans of him Check him out go to our Amazon Affiliates link and it'll be right there For you and the excellent price too on These for for the quality of this
Amazing he's a little leash reactive or Pulls a little bit oh you gotta stay Right there So how about this try to walk past Whoa and we're going for a ride that's Why I kept the gate closed Yeah see that's dangerous you can get Hurt you get hurt with that could you Pull him off Now that was good that you did a good Job there come on good but Lord yeah That's that's what you're talking about Yeah yeah that's that's the issue and When he does it there's no way in heaven No warning nope neither one of us could Yeah I would like to see how the Gentle Leader works for you okay yeah well he Pulls me on that too It's a clue folks The Gentle Leader is not just the do all Stable even the prong caller just Putting it on isn't gonna it'll help it Will help take the edge off but it's More um technique than just a tool so a Lot of folks Um will say that the Gentle Leader is Gentle or more gentle than a prong Collar Cranks the dog's neck so they're going To try to go forward the harder they go Forward the more it pulls their their Head this way which is not ideal for Their neck for their vertebra not a big Fan of it we start like six ten feet
Apart Not that easy aggressive or anything no He's not but he wants Come on And you can see a lot of discomfort now So what happens with the Gentle Leader Though there's no way to give a Correction no there's no way it's not Without snapping in the neck and yeah Basically the only thing you can do is Yoke the dog's neck around Um try it on yourself put a leash put a Leash around your forehead and then have Uh a friend of yours uh pull with their Whole body weight on the top of your Neck and see how that feels right I Don't think I'd like it yeah no let's See how he does with the prong collar Okay and then we'll also improve Everything as we add um technique to the Tool You can stay over here for now okay yeah It's because you have no control over Him and should anything get a little out Of pocket we'd like to be able to Address it and right now you have no way Of addressing it he's not a mean dog There is some stress involved with Meeting that puppy and you can see the Stress because his mouth is closed you Can see the mouth closed he's ready to Strike and defend himself should he need To I'm not saying he's a mean dog but There's a little stress in the equation
And you can see it and my concern with Distress is when when people are under Stress they make mistakes when dogs are Under stress they do stupid things as Well they make mistakes but if he makes A mistake we have no way of controlling It right now barely so I mean he just Drug you like nothing to the to the gate You notice that did you yeah what is This tool replicating or simulating Mama's teeth this is mama's teeth or Another dog's teeth so we're Communicating to them in their language In fact Mr Blue over there has a Beautiful 2.25 millimeter prong collar On right now and he's learning at a Young age what it is and how to turn it Off and he's a joy to walk a joy he Walks better than this one guaranteed Let's see moment of truth that I size it Right Not even close folks not even close fail This is way too loose that's not how the Prong's supposed to be it needs to be Snug like a watch now sometimes and we Have people comment on our YouTube Channel and say oh my God the prong Isn't sitting high and tight the way It's supposed to and it's a little loose Sometimes when we're introducing a dog To the prong collar for the first time I Purposely want it oversized and a little Loose so it doesn't have too too much Bite in it right I don't want to
Introduce the the dog to I want to ease them into it so yeah Trust me I know when it's oversized and A little loose we're doing it for a Reason A nice fit this is going to be snug Like I said he's in between sizes It's just you know it's good when you Can just rotate it And now for safety we're going to double Hook let's see how she does just the Prong and he's chilled out a little bit Let's just see how it goes [Music] See that's very nice But at this point of the game this is Perfect what I was trying to show you he Is not looking at you at all he's barely Aware of your existence and so even Though he's not pulling this is nice This is nice Meaning this is better than what most People have going on with their wall You're not getting dragged at the moment But the dog is not at all checked in With you he's not healing he's not on Your side the leash is delicious in and Out of being loose and so what happens Is when he's out front like that a lot Of dogs think when they're on the walk They think they're on a hunt It's like a it's If you're in a wolf pack they go on a Pack hunts a hunt when you're out on a
Walk the walk is very Representative of a hunt we're out as a Pack and we're checking things out we're Marking our territory we're doing a And some dogs think they're doing a Perimeter security like wolves would do Peeing here and marking there seeing What the other neighborhood dogs are up To but in his case especially with the Breeds that are in there he's ready to Hunt so all we're asking him to do he Has a job to do you know what that job Is Pay attention to me that's it is he Paying attention to me right now not at All So a little Yelp is normal and now we've Prove this Theory correct that if you Turn if you watch me and I turn and you Turn when I turn I'm gonna pay you because he's doing a Good job right yeah It says oh hot dogs Marine Corps boot camp your first week Um it's pretty stressful so it makes you Better so welcome to a Marine Corps boot Camp Jedi let's make it happen He caught the turn again we marked yes And then we pay him where we want them Right so I'm not offering room service I Don't bring the food necessarily to his Mouth unless his mouth happens to be in The right spot Good boy yes
This is that yin and yang we're talking About if he's doing good Look that's perfect this is what we want Here's a sudden stopwatch I'm gonna stop Good good now just because I stopped Doesn't mean it's an automatic Correction he decides he decides not What we can do though is we can Typically we can kind of see what he's Up to like I'm gonna stop chances are he Won't stop He did not and for that correction now In his mind again ah what the I just Stopped I just became a tree if I tied This line to a tree and he ran out to The end of it and he hurt himself who's Going to be mad at the tree There's nothing personal I don't yell at The dog I don't say anything Good boy Wonderful didn't pass the line he Doesn't Now understand the next step Which is to sit next to me and stay We'll clean that up later the point is He's watching me Now people will say oh but you don't Need to use the prong collar to teach That you should just be doing it with Food No you need a backup plan because when You don't have food on you or he's not Hungry or chasing the lizard is more Powerful than the hot dogs you have in Your back pocket you got nothing zero
Zilch zip so yes we're gonna do both yin And yang okay we now have to come up We'll just go for a further walk where There's some ducks donkeys you name it If he sees them And he gets more in tune with something Other than you meaning he stops doing His job Well it's just a test that's all we're Gonna stop if he doesn't stop pressure If he stops payday he makes that Determination now Donald is doing his Job And I'm letting him catch a sniff right This is how you avoid dog fights Um not that I'm concerned about a Dogfight per se it's just for the sake Of argument he's got a job to do stay on The walk stay on watch this guy with the Leash and stay with him We're letting him be a little loose so He can catch up and smell the dog He still has a job to do though it's Called stay with me don't turn around And deal with deal with me they're being Introduced on the job so to speak okay These are now co-workers He's washing his dishes he's washing his Dishes We can wash dishes and hey what's going On over there Cole I see you're the new Dishwasher they're not going what we Call like no she knows Or like dog 69 and getting that sort of
Fight will happen I'm not saying I Expect any fight here it's just for the Folks at home this is a way to introduce Dogs on the walk everyone has a job to Do now we fast tracked it I would Stretch that out over 15 or 20 minutes You start maybe 30 feet 20 feet 10 feet 5 feet one foot switch then we walk Together So you handle it that way I'll handle it This way and now they're getting to know Each other on guess what now it's a pack Walk with I'm gonna walk up here we're Gonna walk next to each other and Everyone still has a job to do So they can be in each other's company Experience what each other are about But it's not a free-for-all there's no Fighting and now we're establishing what That relationship's about that when You're around each other it's not crazy Time It's not a full party I'm not saying Eventually they can't go run and play But let's let's meet formally first dogs Don't take the time to like get to know Someone like we do if they're gonna Fight it's gonna be in that first five To thirty seconds Very hairy Keep walking he's yeah he's got to stay With you good for you Good job oh yeah Now look who stopped and you stopped and
Good job for not correcting now make Them sit just lift Straight Up Lift Straight up keep holding until he sits But perfect give them a lot of line a Lot of line turn Boom that is the corrective U-turn now Was he being really bad not really it's Just for practice and simulation very Quietly stop Money yeah there you go you made it yeah That was really nice so he's walking so Good Jedi is that we brought out crazy Little End Zone this is going to be Enzo's first lesson On how to walk nice on a leash Because he's a little wild man Yeah So all her job is is to if he gets out In front is to very quietly turn that's It yeah that's it all right it's been About an hour and a half two hours and We're finishing up this training session It's so much easier now it's less Anxiety provoking for us to take him for A walk it's so easy now he responds so Well and it just seems so easy to Implement these different strategies I Watched a lot of Garrett on YouTube and He's everything that I hope for and more Uh can't speak highly enough about what We learned in even the short period of Time and we're really looking forward to When Jedi goes through the full program So he can be the super dog that he has
The potential to be and check it out Speaking of super dogs look at what we Got here yeah this is what we want to See happy dogs nice and exercised under Control you know and it's just sweet I I Think not I think I know for a fact this What we taught you today you can start Today right now I would take him into Home Depot right now I always say Home Depot or Lowe's you know a place that Allows dogs you can do it right now yeah Yeah it may require a little bit of a Tune-up we call a parking lot tune up Before you go in the store but it's the Same technique right correct if you turn Sudden stops reminder pops and he goes Oh that's what we're yes that's what We're doing we're going in the store did You have a job to do while we're in the Store Follow the Leader be the tugboat Let him be the life raft be his leader And you'll be set and you're going to Take him anywhere so all right thank you All very much for watching make sure to Like share subscribe and we will see you In the next video Foreign [Music]
