Hey everyone welcome back to another Episode i am here today in georgia at Spirited canine with professional dog Trainer maureen cuccinella who is an Expert at teaching her dogs awesome and Unique tricks and she’s going to share Those with you today so let’s go ahead And get started hey this is maureen Cuccinello spirited k9 here i have Monster um we’re going to be showing you Some dog tricks today i’ll see a couple Of my other dogs as well smith griffin Oh and celia so i guess three other dogs So you’ll notice that i’ll be using some Freeze-dried dog treats during the Training i really like to use these Freeze dried dog treats my dogs eat a Raw diet this is freeze-dried raw food So that way it doesn’t upset their tummy They’re also very motivating for the dog And very easy for them to quickly Swallow so that way i can get in reps Quicker okay i don’t really like using Things like crunchy milk bones those Kind of things take quite a few crunches Before i can get another repetition in Also i would highly recommend utilizing A treat pouch with those treats okay i Personally like this nice silicone treat Pouch here it’s a dexa street pouch that Way i can quickly grab a reward and Deliver it to my dog okay You’ll notice in this video i use Specific words i use specific marker
Words so i have the word yes yes means Hey i love what you just did a reward is Coming to you then i have free so me Personally i use my free as a release Though sometimes i’ll throw a snack into The mix so you’ll know sometimes i just Release her and sometimes there’s a Snack with it and then i have the word Break break is guaranteed release and Reward usually something pretty high Value like a toy Or a really high value piece of food This way i can get more motivation and Drive off the dog in that moment all Right so the first trick we’re going to Start off with is roll over i see a lot Of tutorials this online and there are a Lot of little things that i feel like Are left out in helping us understand The best way to teach this so i’m going To take monster here free First of all your dog knows your dog Should know how to go into a down before Even starting this trick so i want to Get monster in a down i’m just going to Lure her right into it make it nice and Easy so When i’m looking at her hips here Her hips will tell me and where her legs Are pointing is going to tell me the Direction that i need to be on so right Now her legs are pointing to my left so I’m going to go on this side here if you Want to go over this way so you can get
A better shot So the legs tell me which side i need to Be on okay so Um i’m over here monster’s right in Front of me i’m going to take a snack And i’m going to turn her head towards Her spine yes and i’m going to mark and I’m going to reward okay so in the Beginning um Some dogs may be uncomfortable with that So you want to reward any little effort At first this is something it’s going to Probably take a few sessions before your Dog actually rolls over so i’ll reward Any effort at first yes Yes and then over time i’m going to ask For a little bit more so i might ask for A little bit more movement yes you see That effort right there pay that effort I’m going to turn her head towards her Spite and i’m going to see if we can get Her all the way over Yes good job and i was able to complete A rule over right there not the most Realistic for most dogs to be able to do That so quickly she’s very eager um so Take some time ask for effort and work Up to the trick don’t ask for the end Result in the first session so i’m going To show you that again i’ll get monster Down right i’m just going to lure it Right into it yes i’m looking at her Hips Again the same side for her so i’m going
To go right over here She knows it really well again your dogs Are going to need a little bit more help In the beginning she sure did it took Her about 10 sessions before she would Actually roll over so that’s kind of Realistic so again taking her face Turning it towards her spine yes marking In the beginning for that effort any Effort your dog gives you and then i’m Going to ask for a little bit more and See if i can get a roll over yes just Like that okay but yeah the biggest Thing is in the beginning where those Legs are pointing or which leg is more On the outside is where i want to be yes And then over time you’ll get an eager Dog that wants to roll over just like This all right one more just cuz she Wants to Legs are pointing this direction this is The side i’m going to be on take her Head point it towards her spine pay the Effort see if i can get a little bit More yes mark and reward and that’s how You teach your rollover The next trick i’m going to show you Guys is how to teach your dog to jump Over your arms so first of all you need Some kind of barrier i have this pole Right here it could be a wall whatever Works best for you so i have my dog in a Sit so your dog has to at least Understand how to sit and stay or be on
A place and stay just be in a position And stay there so i’m going to take a Snack i’m going to put it right over Here okay so you see your dog also has To have that impulse control to stay in The position with a snack in front of Them then i’m going to put my arm right Here and i’m going to tell her jump Yes good job and i mark it as soon as She jumps over all right so then sit i Wanted her to do it on the way back as Well i’m going to use my other hand so Eventually i can have her jumping over My arms while going around in a circle So i’m going to put it this direction I’ll put the oh i almost wrapped my Snack put my snack right there Jump Jump yes good job Super All right i’ll show that again put your Dog in a sit There we go stay Put the piece of food right over here Jump Yes good job sit And again right over here Jump yes I’d even put the snack there so over Time you won’t even have to put the Snack down your dog will understand okay I see your arm i’m supposed to jump over That arm okay but make sure your dog is Consistently jumping over your arms
Before you don’t put a snack over here Right Jump yes so i can mark now and then i Can pay her all right do it over here Jump yes good job and so eventually you Can start to move away from the wall so I’m gonna go a little bit further this Time you’re so eager sit so i’m gonna go A little further this time right further Away from the wall but not super close Monster jump yes good job and i mark as Soon as she goes over there we go and We’ll do one more sit Good girl jump Yes good job very nice and then so after Your dog understands how to jump over Your arms Then you can introduce a hoop and you Can get your dog to actually jump Through like your arms in a hooped uh Form so when we’re introducing the hoop Sit same thing right we go back a couple Steps whenever we introduce something New in training where we add new Criteria So i’m going to put the snack right over Here And this time i’m going to make a hoop Shape and i use a different cue for this I say hoop instead of jump Yes good job All right we’ll bring it right over here Have her sit good girl Oh gotta put my snack over here
Hope Master who yes good job and you’ll see Like the dog might hesitate at first When he switched that picture so we go From this direction that direction no Problem just be patient give him another Cue if you need to um but then again sit As the dog progresses you won’t need to Put a treat on the other side Yes you can mark and then deliver the Reward and start to move away from the Wall Oh no we made a mistake that happens Good job let’s go over this way sit Yes good job And reward whoop Yes good job and then over time you get This really cool trick Where We can be right over here And i can get her to jump over either of My arms and go through hoops jump Master jump Yes jump Yes hoop Yes Yes good job Very nice and that’s how you teach a dog To jump over your arms and through a Hoop so the next trick we’re going to Work on is backing up so to teach a Backup you’re going to need some kind of Target or a platform so i have this cato Board here for my platform i’ve taught
It with a towel before taught it with a Blanket before you can you literally use That that’s totally fine so when i’m First teaching this free That’s a free good girl i’m going to Have my dog right over here i’m just Holding her collar because she knows What we’re going to do so she’s going to Anticipate it i have the target behind Her i want to start pretty close to it Right with your new dogs at first their Bodies like she’s already lifting her Life with your new dogs at first they’re Going to be really weird about wanting To back up when i first did this with Monster she did everything she could to Avoid the target she would go to the Right side to the left side your dog’s Gonna do that it is okay be patient Reset when that happens okay so i’m Gonna take a piece of food And the biggest thing that we need to Work on if you can bring the camera over This way so you can see Is when i lure her head it needs to go Down like this almost like you’re Pulling the rings back on a horse no Need to go straight downwards okay not Over to the side Of her head like this or this but it Needs to go straight downwards into her Chest like that and curl okay so I’m gonna get her right in front of the Platform i’m gonna curl her head inwards
And i’m gonna move into her yes as soon As she gives effort right your dogs Might not even touch the target at first As soon as they give effort mark and pay Them okay and pay them while their feet Is on the target if you can if they Already got off not a big deal when They’re first learning it’s really it’s Really fine But as time goes on you’re definitely Going to want to wait until i get their Feet out of here okay so Free i’ll get her back forward and then I’ll add a little bit more criteria so I’m going to add a little more distance Back up Yes good job and you’ll notice i say the Cue before i lure i’m usually big i’m Saying the q when the dog has some idea What’s going on in the beginning and as You’ve probably seen with all my other Tricks i don’t use much cues when i’m First teaching something yes but anyway I’m back up adding some a little bit More distance yes paying when she hits The target this time a little more Distance back up And i’m going to pay when she hits the Target yes just like that and then over Time you don’t have to have the food so Close to her you can have it in your Hand down at eye level back up and step In yes just like that a little more Distance
Back up step in Yes oh is he going to try and do a Handstand that’s so funny yes Just like that and then over time master Free you get this really nice backing up Back up Where the dog will go all the way back Yes and touch the target with their back Feet okay so you’ll notice when i do the Cue master free very important i’m sure The nate stresses nate stresses this a Lot in his videos Say the q first and then the action back Up then i would step in yes if i want The dog to get this on verbal cue oh see Dr treat there free get it Very good but yeah you can use this for All sorts of commands this is how we Will start teaching a handstand if your Dog has the uh the genetic structure and Ability to do so but that’s the backup Cue the next trick we’re going to work On is teaching your dog how to do a Handstand So to teach this trick we have to build On our back up so remember with our Backup monster free Your dog should be at the point where Back up they are backing up on their own Yes without so much help okay you might Have to step in and help them out with This because as we’re adding something New your dogs might be like um i’m a Little unsure about this i’m not sure
What to do so help them okay so to teach This object or i’m sorry to teach this Com To teach this trick we need a platform Something that you can add more of or Make taller or A ramp That you can slowly increase the incline On a couple of products i can think About um there are the stairs that are Used for senior dogs they’re often like Made of a microfiber material those can Work pretty well a wooden stable ramp to Get your dog to back up on and you can Increase it over time that’s really nice There’s another training tool it’s Called a climb those work pretty decent For this you just can’t get as much of An incline so basically you want Something that you can slowly increase The height of over time i personally Like these cato boards these are my Favorite uh training tool for teaching Tricks um not the most practical for Everybody but anything that you can add Height to or increase the height of or Incline of is going to help you out so We first start off with the lower Platform okay so i just have one cato Board right here um if you are using a Ramp or anything is that the lowest Incline monster free i get the dog back Up to back up onto the object yes mark And pay
When the dog’s feet are on here okay Just like we do with the back up free When your dog is really good with that We’re going to add another one or we’re Going to add some height to it so i’m Going to slowly increase the height Board by board um for for those that are Using a ramp slowly increase the the Incline of that ramp okay just make sure It’s stable the object has to be stable So it doesn’t scare your dog it took me A while to figure out certain objects i Liked for teaching this I really like these cato boards but Figure out anything that’s stable for You you can even make something free Back up Yes all right we’re gonna add another One free So For your dogs you probably won’t be able To do this as quickly as i can You’re probably gonna have to do this Slowly through many sessions monster Free Back up Yes good job Free Monster Backup Yes Free See i just slowly add board by board Back up
Yes Good job Free Good girl Monster cup back up Yes Free Monster come On you’re okay Yes i’ll just pay that that’s a good Girl Monster free She’s like i know what’s going on why do I want to get away from this Monster Come Back up Yes Free Good girl Back up Yes So when we get to this point where the Dog is actually doing more of a Handstand now this is where i add the Handstand cue so up until now i’ve just Been saying backup but now that the dog Is getting the motion they’re not really Backing up anymore she’s actually doing A handstand yes i’m now going to start Naming it okay monster free Handstand Yes Free
Good girl Monster Handstand Yes Good job Free Gotta reload Monster Handstand Yes Good job so when i’m at this point the Dog now knows the cue handstand they are Now confidently do it doing the Handstand they now have the muscle Memory of being able to maneuver it into It very easily yes i’m now going to Start moving her away from this now Typically you can even do this up Against a wall i’m doing it in the Middle of a room right now just for Filming sake but when we start getting The dog off of here You’re going to want to help support Their rear right so i’m going to lure Her head down and i’m going to move her Forward And i’m going to say something like walk Yes just to start cueing her to move Forward with the handstand okay And then after that repetition We do the same thing we start here yes You see she’s already doing it on her Own i really like that She’s very confident about the behavior
This dog took some time for this i Support her back end with my right hand And i’m going to lure her ahead Yes Good job Super now typically i do this with my Left hand but for filming sake i’m doing It the opposite way so it’s a little bit Weird for her or not monster handstand Yes getting a little tired I’m going to help support her back end I’m going to lure her right ahead yes And i’m going to mark and pay as we’re Moving and then eventually You can start fading this out By removing boards And then you can have a nice Handstand Come on Well let’s see can’t stand there good Then you can have a nice walking Handstand just like that good girl now We’re still working more on distance Handstand this one’s rather new for her Good girl but yes you get a nice yes Walking handstand just like that So that’s how you start teaching a Handstand All right so now we’re going to work on Back stall so a back stall is where the Dog jumps on your back and they stay on Your back until you release them this Can also be used for teaching your dog How to jump off your back and catch a
Disc all sorts of really fun things love This command so to teach this command You need some kind of taller surface That’s going to be about the same level As your back when you’re bent over okay So i’ve used this you know i’ve used Picnic pen uh picnic tables before um Just a table about this size As long as it’s stable again stability Is a really big deal so that way the dog Doesn’t get scared and they don’t want i Mean they don’t Develop a superstitious association to The object so Basically we have to teach the dog how To jump up that height be comfortable at That height and dismount from that Height and when we get that part that’s Where we can introduce our back okay so I just like i said earlier i love these Candle boards these are what i use Initially But again you can use any kind of stable Surface that’s going to be about the Height of your back when you’re bent Over monster fruit so i just get her Used to come on free i just get her used To um getting up onto here She knows the place command really well So i’m just going to say place and then I’m going to release her off it master Place Yes Pay while she’s up here
Free And then i release her Monster place Yes pay while she’s up here Free and then i release good girl Monster we’re not doing handstands Place Yes And then dismount free so when your dog Monster free good girl so when your dog Is confidently jumping up onto here and Jumping off of here we can tell they’re Very confident with the height that is Where we can introduce getting her onto Your back You are going to need a helper for this Friend family member whatever somebody That can help guide the dog onto your Back so make sure it’s somewhere that Your dog is really comfortable with okay So i have morgan here she’s my assistant Trainer So I’m gonna give you the food okay so the Assistant has to have the food Right and they’re gonna be the one Working commanding and rewarding the dog I’m just a table basically okay so i Will bend over About the same height as this i Typically like to be on my knees like This and then morgan is going to lure Her onto my back okay now in the Beginning you want to pay when your dog
Puts their front feet on their back or Any foot um so you want to make sure you Communicate that to your helper And your dog is probably going to only Be able to do their first two feet in The beginning okay As time goes on they’ll get more Comfortable with putting their back feet On you all right go ahead and release Her Yay Very good all right so do go ahead and Do that again start on the platforms and Then get around my back it’s going to Take your dog some time to have the Confidence to just jump onto your back So i spent a few sessions So i spent quite a few sessions i’m just Getting her comfortable with walking Onto my back before i actually expect Her to jump onto it okay so i’ll be on My hands and knees here morgan’s going To lure her all the way on when those Back feet are on and she’s nice and Stable she’s going to mark and reward Excellent Very nice and go ahead and dismount Excellent okay so when the dog is really Comfortable just walking from the Platforms onto your back that is where We can now just get the dog to go onto Your back okay at this point At this point i’m adding a cue with it i Use the cue perch when i say perch that
Means jump onto my back i love how eager This dog is so i’m going to be Further away free Let’s move these out of the way So that way she doesn’t get confused Okay So morgan You’re going to go ahead and help brown To my back you can go from this Direction on okay All right didn’t need to do much help Because this dog understands it However i should have been saying purse Right before she jumped but she jumped The gun there go ahead and free her Very good all right so i’m going to tell Her perch and you’re going to lure her On Perch Yes now your dogs probably won’t jump Immediately on cue like that until they Really understand it and go ahead and Release her Excellent all right i’m going to say the Cue Perch And then you would help her onto it if She needed it over time you can fade the Helper out as your dog tells you you’re Ready wait for the dog to anticipate it And beat it And Beat your helper onto your Beat the helper um
By her jumping on your back first or Your dog jumping on the back first Before you fade the helper out all right Can you really sir Excellent so by that point where the dog Is doesn’t need the helper anymore They’re just jumping around to my back Or right onto your back they’re very Confident with it um that is where you Can now start doing the work without the Helper i may use the uh platform to get The dog onto Onto a place to keep them in one spot or I might do is sit whatever command your Dog is solid at monster come Sit That’s good all right and i’m going to Perch Be on my hands and knees and now i can Actually start challenging her a little Bit by standing up some Good Yes and i can start paying her on me Right i usually like to pay up here at My shoulder yes Good girl right for her it took her a Lot of time to become confident with This because she doesn’t have very good Depth perception because of her eyeball So it took her some time to be really Really confident good job Right but you see i’m even slowly going Up if you have a smaller dog like her Where you can actually have them perch
On your shoulder which is super cool But know your dog’s limitations not Every dog is going to be able to jump on Your back like this and balance some Might just be able to jump on and jump Off that’s fine but i understand what Kind of dog you have in their Limitations and um Don’t try to fit a square peg in a round Hole yes good job Frank And that’s how you teach a backstall So the next thing i’m going to work on Is showing you how to teach a stay now A stay within tricks is very helpful so That way if the dog is unsure maybe They’re going to get up maybe see them Fishing around you can remind them to Stay right there without having to Administer a correction or physical help With our obedience commands We typically will use an implied stay Right the dog understands that position They’re sitting they’re staying in that Position the state isn’t necessary the Dog gets up they obviously don’t know The position and staying there well Enough but within tricks the stay helps Us give our dog more direction In a very easy way okay so you’ll notice We’ll use quite a bit of stay so we’re Teaching more advanced tricks like a sip Pretty with more duration right because In the beginning your dog is just going
To um just go up a little bit and then We build up on that and the stay really Helps communicate to the dog okay i’m Supposed to stay up here right and they Can help give that effort a lot easier Versus you’d be like no sit pretty no Sit pretty and trying to alter them Constantly so as more communication adds More clarity in this context with our Standard obedience commands we typically Use an implied stay especially for Competition obedience especially for Shits and stuff where they typically Don’t want to hear you say a stay but Within our tricks it’s a super helpful Cue so we start off with something very Simple So she’s currently in a down position I’m just going to have her stay while She’s doing that but first thing first Um you see that she is on a platform Right you’re going to want a platform For this this way your dog is less Likely to make a mistake because they Know exactly where they should be so Your dog should have should have some Understanding of place or platform Training in general um so from here I’m just going to simply tell her to Stay i’ll give her a hand signal i do Like to use hand signals to communicate To the dog in certain situations where i Can’t necessarily speak so i’ll tell her To stay and then i’ll use a hand signal
And then i’m going to immediately Reinforce her and then i’m going to Start moving around so she’s currently Down i’m going to tell her stay i’m Going to move this way yes and i’m going To reward right for your dogs in the Beginning you might have to do very Subtle movement the goal of this is your Dog maintains their current position They maintain their current spot Whatever they are in stay i’m going to Step over this way Yes and i’m going to mark that she’s Turning her head without turning her Body that’s what i’m looking for some of Your dogs may need you to be very close To them about here and then you maybe Move a little bit right for this this is Confusing her a little bit because she’s Like hey i’m beyond this but your dogs You might have to be like right here yes And mark really quick turn this way yes And mark really quick but for those dogs Are a bit more advanced stay you can Start going behind them yes and you’ll Notice when i said stay right there she Was going to move she kind of locked up Her body that is what i’m looking for Stay Yes so mark And then i reward okay Stay try longer distances Moving around a bit more at longer Distances yes you see that head’s moving
Rest of the body’s frozen right Stay move this way Yes Very nice okay then you can try Different positions with it so let’s say I want to get her in a stand stand Stay Yes you’ll notice when i said stay her Body kind of locked up a little bit Stay Yes good job and if your dog moves their Feet around But is still giving you effort like you Can tell their brain is trying to stay But their feet are still learning it pay That effort okay say you can ask for a Little bit more Stay good girl Oh that’s okay so she’s a little bit More advanced she made a couple mistakes They’re no big deal stay Oh that’s okay again So you see how she’s moving her front Feet this dog here more advanced your Dog’s different they’re going to need a Little bit more help with it stand Good stay Yes there we go stay A little shift on the foot Yes good job Stay Yes good job moving your head not moving Those front feet right Free it can be a little challenging in
The beginning right because your dog’s Like okay i got to lock up and i gotta Freeze right here So yeah if you need to back up help them A little bit when she made a mistake There i didn’t make a big deal out of it I just Made it a little bit easier for her stay Move right behind her yes Good job no front foot movement at all Marked when i was right behind her at The point of um Of the hardest for her whatever was the Hardest in that Moment for her which is going behind her Monster free Good job and then over time you can Start to apply it i know is that fun out You can start to apply it to all sorts Of other behavior sits down sitting Pretty Getting the dog to freeze up if you need A handstand or whatever but yeah that’s Their beginnings of how we teach a stay I hope you enjoyed today’s episode thank You so much for watching make sure you Hit that like button subscribe if you Haven’t done so and hit that Notification bell if you’re interested In supporting the channel you can become A channel member it’s greatly Appreciated and we’ll see you guys in The next one [Music]
