Do you have a dog that loves to jump? You think you’ve tried everything to
prevent that jumping from happening? Well, I just spent some time with a dog
that thinks jumping is a sport. And I tried something that
you may not have seen before. I want you to check it
out. I’m instructor, Steve,
welcome back to McCann Dogs Here in our training facility, We’ve helped well over a hundred thousand
dog owners to overcome the same dog Training struggles that you have.
So if you’re new to our channel, Hit that subscribe button. We publish new content every single
week to help you to have a well behaved Four-legged family member. I was head
instructing one of my classes last night, And I have this great student named
Emily, and she has a dog named Coulson. Now Coulson is a Husky. He is a big
strong dog and Coulson loves to jump. And Emily’s working really, Really hard to give Coulson the
best start that she can in life. And Coulson actually has
some extra expectation on
him because not only does he Need to be a family dog in their house, But Emily’s a mechanic and
owns an auto repair shop. So Coulson not only has to greet
family members and friends, But he also has to learn to greet
customers without jumping up. And I’ve got a new idea that I’m
gonna try out I’m Emily and Coulson. So we’re gonna find out, are
two leashes better than one. Jumping is one of those behaviors that
is really self-rewarding to a lot of Dogs. And you know, dogs
are rough and tumble. And oftentimes the things that we do
to address the jumping can actually Reinforce it a little bit. You
know, oftentimes the dogs jump. If he were to jump up me and I give
him a push off, he’s like, oh my gosh, That’s amazing. That’s exactly what I
wanted. I want that physical interaction. So what I need to do is I need to be able
to give him a different job to do. Um, Instead of letting him know he
shouldn’t jump. Now absolutely. There’s a time when I’m
gonna tell him not to jump. And right now he’s very interested in
my shoes. He’s a pretty excited guy. Aren’t you buddy, but I want to
give him a different behavior. Now I’m gonna do a couple
of things with him.
I’ve got his leash on him right now, But in talking to Emily who
owns little Coulson here, um, He’s pretty good around the
house until she goes outside. So we’re gonna work some strategies
around that. Now I’ve got his leash. I’m gonna actually put a different line
on him that I’m gonna suggest we wear Around the house. And you know, You’ve heard us talk about
these house lines before. This can be really the
thing that lets him know, He shouldn’t jump in the first
place. So I’m gonna clip that on. And because he is pretty a busy guy and
he is also a big strong guy. Hi buddy, How are you? That’s exciting.
I’m gonna keep his leash on, But what I’m actually gonna use to prevent
him from jumping is that line on the Ground. So I’m gonna have the
leash gathered up a little bit, But I’m gonna get my foot on this line
and I’m simply gonna walk a little closer To him. Now, My goal is that he starts to jump
and figures out that he can’t Because the line prevents him
from jumping off off. Good, Good boy. Leave that
off, off. Good off. Good. Now I don’t really care what
he does instead of jumping, But I don’t want him to jump. Okay. Now
the benefit of doing this is twofold. One. He corrects himself
in perfect timing. He bumps up and hits the unleash and
he realizes you can’t get anywhere. But what I need to do now is say, here’s
what I want you to do instead here, Buddy. Come here. Sit. Good, sit good. Now this line under my foot is
simply an emergency brake. Okay? Um, That’s not the thing. That’s pinning
him to the ground in the sit right now. He’s getting distracted
by some other things, But what I want it to be is the brake
that stops the jumping. So again, I’m gonna give him another job to do
good sit. Excellent boy. Very nice. So I’m gonna yes. And reward that. Sit.
Good. Sit. Excellent boy. Very nice. Good sit. Hey, bud I’m up here?
Excellent. Yes. Good boy. Good. Now you’ll notice my voice is
calm. My demeanor is calm with him. I’m not screaming and
yelling. If I’m gonna pet him, It’s gonna be nice calm pets. Good
boy. Very nice. Every time I move him,
His excitement level comes up
and I’m doing that intentionally. Now what I’m doing is spending a
lot of time, keeping him mellow, Keeping him low and a short period of
time, letting him be a little higher. Good boy. So my focus on the mellow times allows
me to build much more value for him Holding position and being calm
versus letting him get too high. Cuz I guarantee if I move too much.
Okay buddy. Good. If I move too much, I’m too crazy. He’s gonna start to get
jumpier and jumpier and
jumpier and jumpier. Good. Off. Sit. Good set. As you can see, Coulson is starting to get this and the
wheels are starting to turn and he’s Starting to figure out, wait a minute. Maybe I shouldn’t jump on this person
and we’re making another behavior more Valuable, but just because
he is getting it a few times, Doesn’t mean it’s a solidified behavior
and don’t be surprised in your training When you do get some wins, But then things tend to go
off the rails a little bit. So have a look at how I readjust this
and again, help Coulson be right. Good. Off. So we’re getting a
little excited cuz I pet him off. So I’m gonna step a little closer on
that line. Hey, back off, off. Sit. Good boy. Good off. Sit. Sit. Good. So he didn’t sit. So I’m
gonna place him. Good boy. Good. That’s a good boy. Good
job. Who’s a good guy. Good. Now I’m gonna see if this is
gonna get him excited again. Because last time it was the petting
that got him a little worked up in the Moment I stopped. He was excited. So I’m
gonna go right back to that. Sit. Good. Sit. Yes. Good sit. Good boy. Now my right foot is adjusting
this leash tension all the time, But that is my little emergency brake. That’s helping prevent him from
jumping and help me with that. That real real, perfectly
timed. Correction. Good boy.
Hey right here. Good off. Yes. Good boy. Good job.
Good. Good off. Good. Are you ready? Good off. Yes. Good
boy. Good. Ready? Except woah off.
You caught me off. Good boy. Good off sit. Yes. Good. Excellent boy. So because you’re so good with
me being stable and stationary, I’m now kind of ramping
things up a little bit. I’m making myself a little
bit more exciting to proof
through his understanding. And this is where he’s starting to
struggle now cuz I’m now more exciting. Again. He says, Hey exciting things. I
jump on because I love jumping in again. He’s a super friendly
guy. He’s an outgoing guy. There’s not a mean bone in his body, but
I want him to know that he shouldn’t. Jump. It’s one thing for
me to do this with Coulson. I’ve done this with thousands of
dogs. I’m a professional dog trainer, But it’s another thing
for Emily to do that. So now that we’re actually
getting some wins, I’m gonna hand the keys to Emily and
I wanna see how she can do in the same Situation and have Coulson greet me. Now I’m gonna be like that person
on the street who goes, oh my gosh, What a cute dog. Aren’t you
amazing. I wanna come pet your dog. And that’s when I’m
gonna you work through. So you’re just gonna remind him off
and you’re gonna remind him sit. So I’m gonna come in. Good boy. Good
job. Good. Excellent, good job. Yes. Good boy. Reward that. He’s
making stellar choices right now. This is really hard for him. And if you think back to what we
saw in class just a little bit ago, He would not have done
that same thing. In fact, We’ve got lots of footage of him. Every
time I walked in, woo life is awesome. I wanna have a party. So just being consistent in
this particular moment is
starting to plant the seed Is he needs to sit. So talk to him again.
Remind him sit. Good. Sit. Good. Sit. Good. Good. Yes. Good. Now he’s also doing something very
specific here that I wanna highlight. Coulson is absolutely able
to look at me as I come in, But he’s choosing to look at me and then
immediately choosing to look back at Emily. And that’s the thing
I want Emily to acknowledge. She’s doing a great job of. Yes.
Then rewarding that because I want him
to make that choice. I want him to say, Okay, I see that person, but my person
is the thing I wanna pay attention to. And now we’re gonna see if I
can reach it and pet him. Okay. Which let’s face it an hour ago was
a pretty hard thing for him to do. So you’re gonna remind him set. Good
job. Good. Good, good boy. Excellent. Good. Yes. Good sit. Remind him.
Sit. Yes. Good boy. Good job. Excellent. Very good. Good job. Yes.
Good. So that moment right there. Did you guys see that? He looked at
me and directly looked back at Emily. That’s the thing I want to tell
him. He’s right. And doing so. You can see Emily and Coulson did a
really amazing job today and we’ve sort of Ended on a win. And that’s how I, I
always want to take my dog training. I want my dogs to understand how to
be right. And I want to end with that. And it’s really important from this
point forward that Emily and Coulson not Have the rehearsal of
jumping up, jumping up, Being a self-rewarding behavior
the moment your dog gets to do it. It’s gonna set all this
work back that we did. And just because we had this win
here in this particular situation, And we’re gonna end on that,
on that success does not
mean our training is done. We have to take the same approach in
every situation to help Coulson understand That he shouldn’t jump in the first place. If you’re dealing with a dog who jumps up, You’re probably dealing with a
dog that also pulls on the leash. And if you like what I did in this video, You won’t believe what we did in this
video to correct pulling on-leash. If you like what you saw in this video
and think you could benefit from some one On one support from myself and
the other McCann Dogs instructors, Check out our online
