What I see is that people are using the phrase coaching, and it has become this wonderful marketing tactic.
“I’m a coach. I’m coaching my clients. I don’t want my clients to have to pay me again, but we’re only going to go through 7 hours. And by the time we get to the 7 hours, they’re probably still going to need me. So they’re going to pay me again. And that’s how I run my business.”
That’s NOT coaching. That’s teaching.
Here is a fundamental rule that can differentiate whether or not you’re being taught or you’re being coached.
If you’re a guardian, listen in. If you’re paying a trainer right now, listen in.
If you can Google the answer, you are being taught. If you are basically leaning on your trainer as a dog encyclopedia, you are being taught.
Coaching will never respond with an answer. Coaching will never respond with “I hear your question. Let me give you an answer.” That’s not how the exchange works in coaching.
In coaching, we say, “Ahh you’ve really identified an interesting concept there – let’s dig into that
and now I’m going to ask you a bunch of questions that lead you to your own answer.
