#puppyforgetstraining #puppyteenagephase
Go to the train station and we’re Excited to have you here Now there’s a lot of things that we hear People say about the teenage phase when It comes to their dog training and it’s A real challenge for people and there’s Actually Two different thresholds developmental Developmental thresholds that we’re Going to talk about tonight that you may Be encountering and if you’ve got a dog In training you’re you should prepare For because it’s going to take some um You know it’s going to take a uh what’s What i’m looking for like a not a Tactical approach but being prepared Strategic yeah having a great strategy For when these periods come because Because they will come they will and in Fact uh five alive our puppy who’s how Old is he now six months uh he is seven Months old today right so this is one of Those times when we need to start Thinking about that second developmental Threshold And in tonight’s show we’re going to Talk about how you what the teenage Phase might look like how you prepare For the teenage phase and we’re going to Answer some of your questions Specifically about having a teenager i’m Ken steve i’m cal mccann welcome back to Mccann dogs Now i mentioned that
We’re approaching the teenage phase with Five and um You know what might that What might what sort of things come to Mind when you’re thinking about like Things precautions that we need to take With him at this point you know what are Some of the okay how about this What are some of the things that people Tell you that They’re experiencing during the teenage Phase Um Well there’s a bunch of things but i Would say the main the main couple would Be Regression in the dog’s uh training in Listening skills Um And Um I guess that’s sort of the big one but Because that has so many strains it Could be not listening to commands it Could be testing the boundaries a little Bit maybe they started nipping and Biting again maybe they started chewing Again maybe they’re having accidents in The house again you thought you were Over that so sometimes um Issues of the past rear their ugly head And sometimes you get a bunch of new Issues that you think where did these Come from my puppy used to be so good
Now all of a sudden we’re going in a Different direction so for sure Basically that what what you were Comfortable with it it’s there’s a Pretty obvious uh change unless your Dog’s been Not trained the entire time and you’ve Just Been all the way along we’re gonna talk About that yeah you know um can i get You to move over just a little bit we’re So imbalanced here right now that it’s Driving me totally bonkers okay how does That how does that feel kayla and i just Before we went live said we’re gonna be Getting we’re going to have to get these New chairs for them so comfortable that I end up having to like go on my side Although i will say my back is 100 Better that’s right if you joined us Last time on the train yeah kale had Just suffered a back injury so bad and Everybody was so nice and we’ve got such Nice messages you guys are very kind Anyways i am i’m good to go absolutely And you were sitting on like three Different dog beds just like i know Fighting back the tears was awful but Anyways we’re all good maybe this is Your first time here and you’re like Well what on earth have i stumbled into I’ll tell you this is the live stream on Youtube with the most tooting This is a train station i’m ken steepe
This is kale mccann we’re professional Dog trainers at mccann dogs and in fact Mccann dogs is kale’s family business And At mccann dogs we’ve been training dogs For more this is our 40th year yes and We’ve helped more than a hundred Thousand dog owners who are just like You overcome the same dog training Challenges that you have and in the Train station we like to do it twice a Month once uh twice uh what is it every Second thursday every other thursday Yeah and uh we’d like to answer your Questions and dive a little bit deeper We often talk about the fact that our Youtube it’s interesting because We were professional dog trainers who Happen to have a youtube channel and we Try to give you uh you know some quick Fixes some like Sage advice some help some guidance and To prepare you for what owning a puppy Might be like what owning a rescue dog Might be like how to fix some of your Challenges like walking on leash common Common struggle jumping up puppy nipping And biting leadership challenges and a Whole bunch of more things but in the Train station we dive a little bit Deeper because we know you guys are here To really think about the training We do different topics every every time As well yeah every yeah every second
Every episode of the train station Totally different topic and you probably See that like in our recorded content That we publish as well you know we It’s kind of motivated a lot of the time Through your comments or because we you Know we’re training uh nearly 500 dogs a Week in our in-class training and nearly A thousand dogs a week in our online Training we start to see some patterns And some common questions that come up And we say like oh we should talk about This specific thing because a lot of People you know have been asking about It maybe you’re having the same Challenges as well Leah says loving the bee mug isn’t it so Cute I have a dog named beeline and you would Be Shocked at the amount of things that i Have with bees on it without i bought Myself or that people get me but this is Uh yeah Yeah you do need a mug linda absolutely There’s all kinds of like i have how Many bee mugs do i have different ones Like probably six or seven it’s a Collection it is yeah i mean stuff just Tastes better when it’s in a bee mug now This if this is your first time here in The train station i see some names uh That i recognize but i also see some Names that i don’t know if this is your
First time here If you take a look at your chat you’ll See some names in blue and if their name Is in blue they’re part of the mccann Dogs crew that’s instructor robbie and We see dan lots of links luton dan the Moderator man is here to help us with Dropping links giving you you know some Direction to the most appropriate video That might help you out but we also sort Of we like to Cater the information to your level of Understanding so if this is your first Train station here i want you to drop New in the chat just any w drop new in There and we’ll know uh it’ll help you Spelling it it’ll help us uh sort of Guide some of the content and you know Give you guys the best information now Maybe you’re a long time train station Passenger this isn’t your first time Here you know exactly what i’m gonna do Next the other thing that i love because I was never good at geography and um A thing that i really enjoyed doing is During the chat or during the shows or Even after the show sometimes i’ll get a Chance to take a look at the chat and Find out about all the incredible places That you people that you guys are Joining us from like where are you right Now what kind of training challenges do You have oops i dropped the wrong one But where are you
Right now with your dog because it’s so Interesting we have 58 is it 58 Countries are represented right now with The uh in our online approach in 60. Absolutely so let us know Drop drop In the chat Where you’re joining us from Also gives me another opportunity to too You know i’ve gotten like 15 20 minutes Into a show before people like where’s The tutor i know uh i’ve got two out of The way already so we’re just gonna Leave it at that maybe more you just Didn’t hear them that’s true very true So um i see lots of people who are Joining us that are brand new so kayla Sabina uh looks like uh d maxwell um Jessica kathy and marie I’m super pumped to have you guys here Uh this is your first train station i’m Assuming maybe you’ve seen some of our Other videos we have like something like 600 videos or something on the on Youtube right now at least that are Available to watch And uh we’re excited to have you here But today’s show specifically we’re Talking about that kind of in-between Phase that in between age as you move Out of your puppy training and into some More adult skills and then even a little Farther on after you’ve worked on some Of those adult skills you can reach this
Teenage threshold it’s basically you Know it’s like an age threshold that You’ll hit and you’ll start to see a Change in some of their behaviors but Before we get to that i see uh carolyn Joining us from new tennessee nim net From south coast australia wollongong i Just wanted to say that nathan’s from Toronto ventura california Deltona florida uh Johanna says it’s raining every Afternoon when i have to walk my puffy Puppy that is that is frustrating and a Challenge for sure uh walking in the Rain is much less fun but maybe johanna It’s better than some of the heat that You guys have been having i know it’s Been really tough uh lately because it’s Been so hot Robbie likes my tweeting jokes oh does She yeah uh brian’s from montana back From australia rz from rzed from alberta Uh and You guys are this is exciting so let’s Let’s dive into the content when we’re Talking about um Let’s let’s just look at sort of Chronologically how the puppy experience Goes how the training experience goes Because we hear this so often i have The most the best behaved little puppy He just follows me around everywhere we Just brought him home and he just Listens to everything he doesn’t need
Training he doesn’t need training that’s Right and then like four or five weeks Later like i don’t know what happened he Won’t stop nipping me yeah things got Out of control yeah um a lot of people Are asking um about you know what is the Puppy phase what is the teenage phase Like what are the ages we’re actually Going to be breaking that down for you Guys tonight guys so not uh not to worry We will definitely explain all that to You yeah it is important to um to Understand that there are differences And there are differences in what you Can expect of your puppy and your dog Um but to really understand That that Dog training uh Its at its basic level is very Consistent and consistency is a huge Part of you being great a great trainer For your dog Um eric anderson dropping the super chat Forcing the toot Already i’m gonna put this in the queue Kale and maybe we can just start talking About some of this some of this stuff Here yeah and i’ll just get this set up Yeah as ken was saying um you know when You first get your puppy home and Sometimes this doesn’t even apply to Puppies sometimes this is even applying To older dogs but when a dog is in a new Place in a new home with new people for
The first time um you’re gonna be in What we call the honeymoon phase so this Is when your dog or your puppy is trying To kind of figure out the lay of the Land um get more comfortable with their Surroundings start to figure out the Humans in the household who’s in charge Who’s not in charge who’s a littermate All of those things And when they do that they typically are On their best behavior the best behavior They can they can have at that moment Considering they’re just naturally Figuring things out they don’t have any Training yet um And as kev said sometimes people start To think like oh this is going to be Really really great i know when we first Got our puppy um he was just so good at Just naturally following us around if i Took him outside for a pee and of course I had a leash and a long line on him but The leash hardly ever went tight he just Was sort of under foot all of the time Every time i would move this way he’d Just want to chase after me and um That’s adorable life was great yeah You’re careful not to step on them Because they’re just under your feet so Much but we also knew That that’s so common Very common we took advantage of it in Fact we talked about that in a couple of Our
First videos with five we’re talking About take advantage of those moments Because you can start to really build Value for you because you have this Attentive little puppy who’s following You around everywhere in your house Um but okay sorry i i interrupted i Thought it was a perfect opportunity to Talk about five alive uh series yeah it Definitely um that definitely is a good Point we want to try and um Bank off of those great moments because We want to let the puppy know like you Naturally want to do this well hey That’s a great choice so reinforcing Your puppy a lot rather than waiting for That nice stuff to kind of fall away and Then you can’t utilize it anymore um When puppies start to be home for a Little while though and they and i don’t Want to get too specific about age Exactly because every dog is different Um dogs develop differently but we’re Just gonna speak generally don’t get too Hung up on the age it more so has to do With like the time frame um that the dog Is is is with you so after a few weeks What will happen is the dogs start to Get more comfortable and they start to Kind of have you know a general idea of How they think the household works and Um And then they’re curious and they want To try stuff you know can i chew on this
Couch that seems like a fun thing to do I chewed on all kinds of toys and things In my you know in my litter box for all These for all those weeks um you know Which which people am i going to connect Most with who can i kind of get away With stuff with who makes me listen and I need to respect a little bit more they Kind of figure that out they get a lot More curious they get a lot more bold They get more independent and this is Where Um people Struggle the most because they continue To treat their puppy like they did the First couple weeks home and now our Puppy needs different types of um Information to make sure that we’re not Going to start going down the wrong path And then we have a lot of catching up to Do yeah and this is really common you Know you need you should be preparing For these moments you should be Preparing for this understanding that You know um okay let’s talk about that First actually let’s answer the super Shock question we’re going to talk about That uh first develop developmental Threshold but understanding that your Puppy is going to start exploring the World the world’s going to get a little Bit bigger for them and With in an absence of information Whatever they discover if it feels good
It’s gonna be the right thing so if Chewing on the pillowcase feels good It’s the right thing if chewing on your Shoe tastes good that’s the right thing In an absence of information whatever Feels good is right so we need to talk About that a little bit but before we Get there we had a couple super chats And i want to mention that actually and For christiana I know that We just dropped a question mark for our Members so if you have a question and You’re a member you can use the question Mark icon your members only icon And we’ll be able to see your question a Little more easily but before we get There Erica’s asking Pumpkin my 13 month old is still in the Teenage phase she’s been recovering from An illness and also hasn’t been Listening well connection So there’s a couple things here that we Need to dive into um understanding that Uh Training is separate from the teenage Phase so uh you know if It you don’t want to you got to be Careful that you don’t What’s the word i’m looking for not Blame the teenage phase for some of your Training challenges but you do have a Very unique training situation and if
Your dog if pumpkins been ill A lot recently the motivation levels Might be low maybe you know you’ve been Struggling to find out what is the thing That connects me to pumpkin because he Or she’s a little more lethargic or Doesn’t have an appetite But um at 13 months that’s a little bit Past that teenage phase with that said You know uh there’s a lot that you can Do to turn this around maybe we can talk About sort of bringing back some of Those skills at 13 months yeah well Anytime you run into a situation where Um maybe you haven’t been able to train As much or you’re out of the sort of the Flow of things and the dog isn’t Listening as well you always want to Think about going back to a stage in Your training where you are going to get Success and it’s not uncommon for us to Have to tighten the rules at home maybe The dog’s given a little bit less Freedom now than they maybe had worked Their way up to at this point maybe They’re on leash a little bit more um Maybe we’re reinforcing our dogs a Little bit more often for the good Things that they do and we’re Controlling you know the ability from For them to make poor choices um in Terms of like your skills things like Response to name or coming when they’re Called or leave it or all of those
Things that would be you know possible For the dog to not listen you want to Make sure that you have follow-through If your dog’s not coming reliably when They’re called or if they’re getting Into mischief you need to make sure that You can back your yourself up back your Voice up with having a long line on your Dog or training training through it yeah Restricting their access to getting into Those things in the first place you just Have to kind of think about changing Your setup a little bit more having a Little bit more follow-through so that Your dog’s not learning that the um Rules have changed but then on top of That you need to build the dog up by Finding opportunities to say yes that’s A good choice good dog and and be Reinforcing in a more positive manner so That it’s less frustrating for both you And the puppy devaney dawson pumping the Show stoppers with the boss sticker Thank you for the super sticker uh i am A raccoon With a comment we’re bringing home a Corgi puppy tomorrow 10 weeks old do you Have any recommendations on introducing Her to our three cats who have never met A dog this is an important one and i Know it’s something that a lot of people Ask yeah um well when you first bring Your puppy home i would probably Let the first week or so go by with no
Interaction between the puppy and um and The cats the cats aren’t really gonna Like that very much um We actually had a cat when um We were looking after my sister’s cat When five alive came home and um Matu was the cat’s name um was very used To having the run of the house but when We brought the puppy home and we were Giving the puppy some time to be with us And training we would put machu away we Would put her upstairs in the bedroom or We would you know shut the door to the Basements uh where her her food and her Cat litter is um and we would just keep It separate because we wanted the puppy To have a chance to kind of get Comfortable with the household um give Us a chance to get Some skills on the puppy in a week Obviously not a lot um so that the Puppy’s a bit more familiar familiar and Then you can start to integrate um the Cats and the dogs together um making Sure that your puppy’s on a long line That you’re using baby gates in Different ways to make sure that your Puppy isn’t able to torment the cats um And that your cats always have an Opportunity to move away any time they Please that’s really important that they They have a safe comfortable quiet space That they can go to when they need to Get in we don’t actually recommend
Forcing any meetings um when it comes to Cats yeah yeah i mean we could dive Pretty deep into that one but yeah um Christiana fagan one of our members i Just picked up my 12 week old cocker Puppy and putting your fingers into the Crate when they are crying beside your Bed has been the best idea so far she Even falls asleep on my hand nice that Is very cute i would work towards not uh Having to do that every time though Because you may find that you’re Inadvertently rewarding so that’s such a Great way to start um but work towards Not having to do that so that you’re not Being stuck having to put your hand in The crate every day the first Developmental threshold is around the Four month mark and this is usually with Our dogs when we start to transition From a lot of those puppy training Skills Into the more adult dog training skills Like we generally don’t do uh you know Any formal walking on leash we certainly Don’t work on stays it’s not about Longevity in a lot of our uh training It’s about foundation building Reliability in short spurts absolutely And the challenge with that first Developmental threshold at four months Old is that as kale mentioned before at The beginning your puppy’s world is very Small for a lot of you guys you can’t
Even take them outside you know you’ve Got you have to be careful where you’re Going with them and then all of a sudden All the vaccines they’re all vaccinated Up and you have access to do a lot more Things and you feel like they’re a big Dog and they’re completely and utterly Overwhelmed by the world around them So to to Get your puppy give your dog the best Journey through that first developmental Threshold we’ve talked about it and we Showed a lot in a lot of our videos but We really load value on the simple Skills that we can work on in a Controlled environment before we hit That four month mark um let’s talk a Little bit about like some of the You know i’m thinking about like those Natural training opportunities is one Also like what are the foundational ones We’re working on like uh the restrained Recall and the simple like lure Understanding how to follow food yeah Basically at this age before they have a Chance to develop um you know a lot of Independence where they just are Learning to seek reward from other Things other than you Basically we want to fill their world With things that make us reinforcing we Can do that through basic training with Walking just rewarding the dog at the Side again no distractions this is just
Like in the house or around the kitchen Island something that that is very Simple for your puppy to be successful At as ken said restraint recalls those Are a game that we play to teach our Dogs to come when they’re called we also Utilize it for um response to name i Know i did this a lot with five from Like nine weeks when he came home Literally still do it now at seven Months And i would practice having different People that he’d never met before um Hold him and then i would stand in front And get him excited and then take off And run and let him chase the tug toy as I called his name and i would practice In different locations with different People holding him and that was a great Way to Expose him to some new experiences but Again the whole time he’s learning when You’re in the yard and i call you come To me it’s fun when we’re in the park And i call you come to me it’s fine if We’re off the dog school and i call you Come to me it’s fun because he didn’t Really have any other options but to Chase after me in the tug toy because of The way that we set it up so again Building value for me me me me me all of The time so that he’s really thinking That’s the best thing because if you can Accomplish that then starting to teach
Them some of the more complicated skills Are going to be a lot easier because you Have a dog that’s willing and eager to Do things for you so this is um really What we call building a relationship a Working relationship so that the dog Feels that they want to choose you over Other things but we create that by the Things that we do with them around that For well before that but four months old Is a really really important Part of this because this is when the Dogs start to get curious about things That are going on around them so if We’re not interacting with them and Building that value um things go slip Between between our fingers so um and This is a lot of the time when people Start to give their dog more freedom More opportunity what do you think you Should be doing if you can anticipate That your dog Training might become a little bit more Challenging and that you probably might Be making more mistakes what do you Think you should do proactively as the Human here Got to focus on some management we need To think about how we’re going to not Allow that puppy to make so many Mistakes not allow that puppy to um Completely disregard you when you’re you Know you take them out for their evening Pee
In the backyard and they’re just doing They’re just burning hot laps and There’s nothing you can do about it what Are you going to do At that point because i will tell you This is the moment that will make or Break that teenage phase you know if Your puppy thinks that it’s kind of up To them When they get to like act like a wild Child when they listen Then they’re going to repeat that Behavior because remember when it feels Good it’s the right thing So what are you going to do to manage That dog a little bit better that four Month phase is tough because we want to Get out and do more stuff that’s what we Aspire to do yeah with our dogs but boy Oh boy can things go horribly wrong yeah It’s hard at four months or even five Months sometimes even six months because Our dogs don’t really have a lot of Solidified skills yet so it’s really Hard to take a four month old puppy out To all these places because they don’t Know how to walk on a leash yet they Don’t know how to not jump up on people Yet They they are still building skills so This is where the management comes in Because we need to make sure that we’re Setting them up to make good choices by A not putting them in scenarios that are
Going to over face them and encourage Bad behaviors and b be set up to Allow you to to help them so for example You know when five was going outside Simply to our side yard to go for a pee Or a poo or exercise he always 100 of The time was wearing like a long line so He never had an opportunity to chase a Squirrel to dig a hole to chew on sticks To run over to my neighbor’s yard Whatever the situation may be i always Had control now i wasn’t pulling in you Know around the the yard with with the Line it was nice and loose but i would Use it to stop him from doing puppy Things because he wanted to pick up Everything in his mouth and if he saw my Neighbor out there he was like i could Go say hi and he would want to take off And visit But because i was managing well with a Long line he learned really quickly he Wasn’t allowed to do those things so Again i’m molding and shaping those Behaviors okay this i really wanted to Talk about this one before you go on to That i don’t know yeah can i let’s jump On let’s talk about this because this is I saw marion and someone else had Mentioned that they’re having trouble With counter-surfing and this is not Uncommon think about it your dog is Starting to get into a Yeah a height where they can get up on
The counters where they’ve like had lots Of um experience watching you make Delicious food up there so um I know something that a lot of people Wonder is Well it only happens when i’m not there How am i supposed to do anything about It if it’s happening when i’m not there And then they say well going through Their teens i guess you know got to just Wait this one out let’s talk a little Bit about counter surfing and this Measures that can be taken Yeah i always I’m very perplexed when people say It only happens when i’m not there i Think to myself Why are you not there Well so this is why are you not there 100 because people think that how am i Going to fix the behavior that’s Happening when i’m not there uh and it Well he just doesn’t do it when you know When i’m there so i can cut this one This one i can kind of see a little bit More because they’re probably hopefully Your eyes if you’re having trouble with This you’re really watching when you’re In the kitchen wherever that opportunity Presents itself so they need to learn How to set it up better absolutely Because when you are watching is ken Saying a lot of dogs are stupid they Know that if you’re there that you’re
You know you’re gonna stop them from Doing it but i will say that even when People are there a lot of time people Have very late information so the dogs Jumped up on the counter and then that Person has said off and they’ll do the Old snap and point or whatever and There’s really no consequence for Jumping up on the counter they also were Successfully jumping up on the counter If you really want to fix your problem You need to make sure you have a leash Or a line on your your dog and you need To stop them From jumping up at the counter before They jump up on the counter so if their Paws are already up there you’re late You’re you’re you’ve you’ve missed your Boat yeah of course you need to get them Off the counter at that point but that’s Not gonna stop them from jumping up you Need to teach your puppy how to have Self-control to not make the decision to Uh the decision oh my god the decision To jump up in the first place so i’m Gonna watch my dog really closely and if I see them start to coil or if they Start to air scent and i think to myself I think they might be thinking about Jumping up on the counter i’m going to Use my off command and i’m going to stop The dog from doing that i might ask them To do something else i might stop my my Foot on the leash that’s attached to the
Collar and i’m going to stop it from Happening in the first place um that’s The first thing you want to fix because That will actually teach the dog more About what the rules are uh most people Don’t do that most people let the dog Jump up because they’re late and then They say get off and then that just Keeps happening well it keeps happening Because your dog is successfully getting Up on the counter whether they steal Something or not just getting up and Looking around is rewarding this is Important in a lot of this you’ll this Will be helpful for you because you need To understand that for a lot of dogs the Uh act the that running part running Away part that jumping up part um they Don’t even need to get petted they don’t Even need to get something from up there But the act is valuable enough it feels Good yeah and you must you mustn’t give That dog an opportunity to self-reward When you’re not there and you can’t do Something about it um so for in in your Situation i forget who had asked that But in your situation if this is Something that’s happening when you’re There amazing because we have a video Here on the channel and i think uh dan Might have dropped the link So um That’s going to help you we talk about The the the steps the air sending the
The the things that pre the cues it’s Like an aura the things that are Happening just before the thing happens Yeah so um That video will be helpful for you but If you can’t supervise you mustn’t allow Your dog access to to make those choices It’s really that simple And what you’ll find is the dog stops Making the choice to jump up because There’s just no gratification from it Yeah and if it’s the case of of not Being in the room with them you need to You know be in the room at first but Make yourself look busy don’t stand There and stare at them waiting for them To jump up because they you know they Probably won’t you know be Busy doing things but really be keeping An eye on the dog or do something where Like you walk out of the kitchen for Literally two seconds and then Immediately walk back in or you can pull A james bond and get a mirror and you Know hold it so you can see in the Kitchen so you can scroll them with your Voice when you see that they’re about to Jump up so there’s lots of things you Can do to catch it but the most Important thing is having good timing Yeah so that your dog is clear about What you what you like and what you Don’t like because it’s only fair it’s Only fair to the dog you can’t get mad
At them for doing something remember Like we’re introducing dogs to our world It’s not a natural thing for a dog to Walk at our side it’s not a natural Thing for a dog to listen to a human to Uh you know uh not a terror to not dig Outside to try to you know find some Rodents or whatever the situation might Be so we have to show them what it’s Like to you know live in our world and It’s our responsibility to make sure That number one we’re setting them up to Be successful number two we understand That they’re going to just do what comes Naturally to them and to you know take The steps to prevent the things we don’t Like it’s your responsibility i really Like what um And warlock said there if you’re not There the dog should be in its crate Right yeah yeah absolutely absolutely if The dog is in uh you know a kitchen Scenario and they keep jumping up on the Counter then you you shouldn’t give them Access to that to the opportunity to Jump up yep absolutely um the other part When we’re talking about that first Developmental threshold around the Four-month mark Is um it’s an interesting one and i Certainly didn’t recognize it until i Had done my apprenticeship as a dog Trainer helped a lot of people to Complete my my training and i started to
Recognize an important Moment Over the first four months you have your Dog and maybe your dog is not not just 16 weeks old maybe you’ve had your dog For a handful of months that first Amount of time that you’ve got them You’re learning a lot about them you’re Learning a lot about you how you train Them how you know Something you’re doing isn’t working Right so you’re going to have to take a Different approach you’re learning what They like and don’t like do they love You know Peanut butter Dog treats or something or would they Rather you know a big pet and play Session would they rather you know uh i Don’t know liver bits these these are Really important to understand about Your dog training in in those first four Months that you have your dog especially If as they approach that first Developmental threshold it’s i want you To make note of these things in fact Instructor shannon when she talks she Talks a lot with the online training Students about this but like make a Journal just write down that you know Today um you know the scooter absolutely I’ve discovered he loves the uh tuna Treats the mccann dog student treats Whatever the thing is but you write that
Stuff down and then it makes you a lot More powerful in your training Because you really are starting to get a Sense of okay if my dog makes a great Choice i’m going to give them the thing That they love the most so that they’re Motivated to do it again does that make Sense for you guys like does that you Know Seeing that as a trainer seeing people Come through i could start to really Recognize when people had started to Learn about their dog they were more Successful because they weren’t putting Them in situations yeah especially when It comes to that four-month first Developmental threshold they weren’t Putting them in situations where they’re Likely to fail they knew they had to be A little bit more ready yeah you can Really see that like obviously i think It’s easier for people to understand When you talk about like a physical Thing like different treats or different Toys you know it’s fairly easy to figure Out what your dog likes and what your Dog doesn’t like because you can read That body language but what i think a Lot of people don’t uh recognize and we See this in our classes all the time Is how much dogs respond to like your Energy and your praise And how much you’re putting into it Because there’s been lots of times where
For those of you who watch our channel You know that i’m Sometimes very squeaky no way And engaging and and that type of thing Which is great uh but what happens Sometimes is my i’ll have students that Are praising their dog or doing Something and then i’ll walk by and say Like whoa good puppy that’s the way and Their dog will just leave them and run To me i literally have no cookies no Toys nothing but because i’m using you Know an engaging voice or i’m moving my Body or i’m clapping my hands or i’m Doing something the dogs are like that’s Exciting and so when you can teach that Person to walk with more engagement to Actually praise their dog and like Really cheer them on when they’re Calling their dog to come you literally See the dogs like turn on the Afterburners or like pay more attention So don’t underestimate um What you can give your dog to build more Motivation and drive for listening to You without actually needing something Physical to do so before you get to that First um teenage phase that’s so Important i was just talking to someone About that yesterday and um no way jose Get off i’m going to take this in a Couple of different directions uh the First one i was just talking to someone About this a male yes guy yesterday
About um the fact that i would say The majority of the time that i have to Coach a student on something like this It’s a guy who’s just completely It seems i know he cares but he sounds Apathetic this is like good way to go You know my wife sent me here yeah right But It’s a lot harder to connect with your Dog that way and i’m not talking about Like being bubbly and silly and goofy But i am talking about that might be it That might be the thing that connects You with your dog what you’re looking For is something to maintain some of That attention we use a lot of food up Front we we re because it’s a natural And dogs are naturally motivated by it But You need something else there needs to Be something additional to that and when You move into through these phases You’re going to want every tool in your Tool belt maybe it’s food maybe it’s Your voice maybe it’s your energy the Dogs your dog will recognize when you’re Genuinely excited about the results They’re getting for sure it’s really Really important and you know um the Other thing That’s really important if you take Nothing else away from tonight Figure out what it takes to connect with Your dog
Whether it’s maybe gruff and grumbly and Just really excited uh maybe it is Bubbly and squeaky and like fun and high Pitched but figure out what that likes Bum scratches right that’s right yeah You’re right our toy poodle hippie shake Just loves a bum scratch yeah she does i Get it hippie i get it But what what she what what you need to Um Remember is that because things are Getting way more challenging throughout The teenage phase that first threshold Especially and we’re going to talk with The next in just a moment but you you Want everything at the ready to help Your dog to be successful so that you’re Not struggling Uh i figure with the other point oh Natural training opportunities take Advantage of those when you have those That first four month period or you know At any time really the natural training Opportunities are the bridge between Your formal training whatever that means With you and your dog you know we have a Million videos here on the channel to Talk about the first week and first day And first night and first month Whatever Do those as well but the natural Training opportunities that you’re gonna Have throughout your day are a great way To
Move into the real world with that Four-month-old dog who’s just the World’s just expanded you need sort of Like bridge activities let’s talk about Two or three natural training Opportunities that we use with our Puppies that allow them to get into the Real world with some understanding I wasn’t really listening so you can Start with the first one and then i’ll Add more yeah so uh when we go out for Them to pee or poo we’ll go out there We’ll have some treats with us or we’ll Have a toy with us Because that’s a natural training Opportunity we’re introducing them to uh You know a new environment or an outdoor Environment where they could make the Wrong choices kayle’s talked a little Bit about how the puppy goes out on a Long line or a leash we always have Control but we take advantage of that so That after they’ve done their business Then we’ll work on response to name yeah You know we might work on whatever the Thing is might even you know response to Name is a big one but it might be like Getting at my side yeah and this when This natural training opportunity Happens multiple times a day yeah and we Can control this one yeah other ones Could be when you’re getting your dog in And out of the crate or putting the Leash on and off those are often times
Where dogs are over excited and they Tend to do behaviors that we don’t like Like jumping or nipping and biting where I can teach my dog to do something more Productive in that moment by you know Initially luring them into a sit and Rewarding them for holding a sit as they Hook their leash on um another one that I’ll often do is you know if we’re gonna Sit and watch tv you know later at night And um maybe you won’t want to let the Puppy hang out with us for a little bit We actually just don’t let him run Around and play with toys and jump all Over the place that’s another training Opportunity where he learns how to be Calm and quiet so i will have made sure That i have exercised him prior so he’s Gotten all that crazy out with tugging Or chase games or something so by the Time we you know head to the couch to Relax i give him uh a bone to chew Something that’s a little bit more Special than maybe he gets earlier in The day i have him with me On the dog bed or even up on the couch Just on my lap and i’ll let him chew on The bone and if he’s too busy wanting to Do his own thing his choices are lay Calmly and chew on the bone or you go in Your crate this is a great one i really Like it this is an important one for you Because now what started to happen is he Now learns that that’s sort of like what
Happens at night you mold and shape them And you know now i let him chew on a Bone you know in our room for a half Hour or an hour before we go to bed and He because it’s a routine he’s like okay This is not play time this is when i Just kind of lie down and chew on my Bone but again i prep him for that so That if i haven’t really done much with Him all day i can’t expect a seven month Old puppy to lay quietly and perfectly You know at the end of the night chewing On a bone he is like ready to rock if i Don’t do anything with him so um you Know set them up to be successful but Think about situations where you can be Training or if you don’t want to be Training like if you just want to watch That movie or do whatever you want to do And not have to manage the puppy then Happily put them in their crate during That time and there’s nothing wrong with That but what you don’t want to do is Just let them be free out of their crate Doing their own thing and then making Poor choices and then getting frustrated And mad at them for making poor choices When you could have done something Differently in the first place i love This so crystal says well how do you not Make that how’s how do you make that not A punishment It’s a great question yeah well it’s Really how you how do you use the crate
How are you introducing the crit how are You using the crate throughout the day Um how does your puppy view the crate How do you take them to the crate There’s um you know there’s actually More ways to make the crate a wonderful Thing than there is to make it Punishment um you know we never ever Recommend or do we ever take our puppies To their crate in a sour way Every single time our puppies go to Their crate they’re typically going very Willingly because we’ve done tons of Reinforcement for running in the crate Um five is seven month old he has gotten Every single meal but maybe like a Handful in his crate morning and night So when i put the kibble in the bowl he Races to the crate and he goes in Happily if he’s being a stinker so like I think maybe what prompted you to say That as i said he either lies quietly Chewing on a bone or he goes in his Crate i’m not you’re being naughty You’re going in your crate i’m going to Say you’re wild right now and i don’t Really want to deal with this so let’s Go to our crate i might take him out for A pee first and then you go i’m happily Putting him in i might be putting him in With a kong full of cheese or something To help him settle but i’m not ever Taking the dog to the crate in a i don’t Like this so you’re going in there but
What’s even more important and it’s Something that maybe I struggle sometimes like i know we get Some unusual questions on our youtube Channel but you know people that are Worried about the crate being punishment I don’t think they’re being intentional Enough when the dog is out of the crate Yeah you know i think the dogs may be Just hanging around or they let the crap Be too much of a choice like they like Our dogs they’re when they’re young the Crate is not a choice they’re either in It or they’re out at my crate is never Open for the dog to freely go in and out They’re either in or they’re or they’re Out um but they’re they’re in their Crates so often throughout the day that It is just not a thing to them they Don’t they’re not worried about it Because it’s such a common part of their Everyday life people who often struggle With their crate or people who don’t use It very often they use it when they go To sleep they use it when they leave or They you know use it very infrequently Well Has been in a crate since he was eight Weeks old literally and it he just it’s Not even a thing well and outside of the Like actually being in the crate or what The dog’s doing in the crate is we’re Intentional about what we’re doing when They’re out of the crate you know we
Know that our puppy especially when five Was little he you guys probably remember If you watched some of the videos he was A wild thing with tons of energy so we Had to do still is sometimes yeah we had To do Intentional stuff we had to do Restrained recalls we played tug in the Living room we played little fetch Tire him out every day absolutely so and Where i’m going with this is We haven’t struggled with that first uh Teenage threshold because we’ve had Great structure more importantly we cale Talked a little bit earlier about what Do you do when they start to not listen Well you identify that as a problem you Train through it you work on those Skills you don’t let the dog stop Listening you Recognize it oh you know what last Couple times he hasn’t really you know Done his whatever responded when i told Him to come or responded to his name or He’s constantly jumping up you know and Biting me or whatever the thing is so You put put a leash on get better Management and then you work on it then You start to do some training Getting to the next developmental Threshold is the one we’re just about at And it happens around the seven month Mark now cale mentioned it’s different For all dogs and i don’t want you to
Definitively say up seven months okay Yeah it does depend on your relationship With the dog and also uh how much Training you’ve done up into them um the More training and interaction and Respect and relationship you have with The dog the less you’re really going to Notice these these changes Um so yeah don’t get too hung up on an Age absolutely so the big difference as You get to that seven month mark and we See this we had a uh we had a puppy That their owner dropped off for a video At the studio a while ago Maggie is a golden doodle golden doodle Yeah and i saw her last night we had our Uh we had a bunch of grade one students In and we did this grade one lesson one Thing and i saw maggie and i thought That can’t be the same dog like she’s She’s enormous now but this is the thing She’s around that you know six month Mark and she’s starting to get bigger Your dog at around the seven month mark Is bigger probably stronger likely and It’s a different more confident much More confident It’s a different training experience and If you are if you haven’t been watching Our channel if you haven’t Been taking in all the information about How training is dynamic and it’s ongoing You know it’s not like you teach a dog To sit and then you never ever address
It again you just don’t use it or if you Teach a dog to walk on leash sometimes Training needs a little cleaning up you Know sometimes it needs a little bit of Work and it’s not like this straight Path uphill where your dog gets better And better and better so as you get to The seven month mark you may have like Stopped doing some training with your Dog not not even really thinking about It and this is where that second Developmental threshold can create some Real Challenges for people and if their dog Stops listening they’re like well he Used to listen he would respond to his Name every single time he was outside Well i guess it’s a teenage phase what Are you gonna do What do they do Well this goes this sort of comes back To what um The question with pumpkin uh before About the dog Not listening anymore and i had said About follow-through and making sure That you’re not just allowing those Things to happen sometimes when you Think you’ve gotten to a certain point In your training and the dog is not Doing well or they’re not listening or They’re pushing their butt your buttons Or whatever it might be The best thing to do is to go back go
Back a little bit in some of the earlier Stages choices that you would have made When they were a 10 to 15 week old puppy When they didn’t have many skills um you Go back to that you go back to creating A bit more you go back to having the Leash on you go back to helping your dog Be a little bit more successful by Following through or keeping them closer To you not letting them have as much Freedom rewarding them a little bit more All those things that i said before but Um Uh and says bootcamp yes that’s a very Affectionate Affectionate um Problem-solving uh phase that we that we Use with our our students dogs is boot Camp yeah it’s not actually boot camp But It’s it’s a good way to understand this It’s not it’s not as scary as boot camp Sounds but it is it’s it’s basically um You know changing the structure of their Everyday life so the dog starts to go oh Maybe i’m maybe i’m not supposed to do This maybe i’m actually supposed to Listen to you um so yeah you have to go Back to that stuff let me know i know um I think we had a Uh like a little lower third across it Said let me know what your What skill is your dog forgotten And we’re going to talk a little bit
About some of those i want to see a few Specific examples the other thing i want Type to type it in the chat The age of your dog and maybe their Breed um i’d love to see some of uh your Answers or some of the questions that You might have about this stuff yeah the Other thing that i want you to be really Mindful of is Because we’re giving our dog more Opportunity more freedom more access to You know challenging situations did your Dog ever really understand the skill Yeah you can teach a dog to sit we could Teach uh i mean kel taught a cat to do Like tricks and spin around in a circle And do all kinds of things but the Moment you introduce another Animal person thing around the cat would Start to lose some of those same thing Happens with your dog your dog might be Able to be brilliant in your kitchen and Then you go on the driveway and it is a Complete and utter failure we talk a lot About how to transition into different Locations how you can reinforce the dog For making great choices and how to set Them up to be right But as If you go to the let’s say you go to Your cottage or your i forget what the Cabin i forget the people in the u.s Don’t call it a cottage Lake house i don’t know if you go sure
They know what a cottage means i don’t Think so uh we call it college i Remember we i’ve used that term before And people have been like i don’t know Summer home a summer home maybe yeah Either way if you take your dog to a new Location and they stop responding to Their name they stop uh you know Listening all together you should have Seen that coming because this is a new Challenge for your dog it doesn’t just Happen overnight they start to get a Little slower with their responses Uh-oh mary h Turn in the train station blue I like when the lights are blue yeah That does look cool doesn’t it thank you Mary for the super sticker Yeah these new uh environments your dog Was never really 100 Um Skilled they didn’t have the skill to be Able to overcome the challenge in this Situation so maybe they listened in your Backyard Thanks john that’s right yeah Yeah okay maybe they were able to do it Uh you know at the park but now you’ve Gone to the cottage and there’s like new Things new sights new sounds new smells And your dog just isn’t on it So what do you do about that well maybe You Get your dog out of your car take them
Out of the cabin and you work on a Couple of attention exercises maybe you Reinforce a couple of response to names To remind your dog like oh right there’s Value in listening But without that without I would never let a dog off leash unless I was absolutely certain i was going to Get some kind of response unless i was Sure that the dog was going to turn And this is how our training goes yeah Go ahead well i was just thinking we Were talking about like the cat cottage And the cabbage i don’t know what say Cabbage to go to the cabbage i said that Um i was just thinking about What we do with our young dogs that Probably most people don’t do but we Think it’s so normal so to give you an Example a few um a few weeks ago I was away for the weekend in our Trailer and i had a bunch of the dogs With me and it was the first trip that Five has gone on away from the house and You know One of the things that i chose to do While i was away is take him out by Himself not the other dogs and like go And train him in that new location so i Didn’t just like tie him up outside and Like make him integrate into the thing i Don’t tie my dogs up anyways but um i Took an opportunity to be like okay i’m Here in this new location he’s never
Been here before so i put my bait bag on My leash and his favorite toy and i went Out and i just walked around the Campsites and i did response to name and I stopped and had him sit when people Came by and let him say hello without Jumping so i went through all of the Skills that he is starting to recognize And i put in a new scenario but i don’t Think a lot of people think to do that i Think they just think to Just live life with the dog and not say To themselves this is a new scenario my Dog doesn’t maybe know how to listen Here so let me take a half an hour and Go out and take advantage of this Opportunity and train the dog we have to Remember that they’re not going to get Better if they don’t get trained so you Have to put those times in and this is This is the age that you really want to Do it because now they’re getting old Enough that you can actually go out and Do these things um i’ve seen some really I’m gonna go and grab some more of these Comments but talking about some of the Um Some of the teenage phase challenges That uh that you guys are seeing and i See i’m seeing a common thread here but One thing that i’d love to see carolyn She’s on top of it here she said 16 Month old have an ease with too much Freedom she’s self-diagnosing and i love
It because you might be right that might Be one of your greatest challenges and i Know people people think that um too Much freedom well you know what what’s The alternative you know what is the Alternative I feel like my dog should have all the Freedom that they want yeah and they’ll Get that yes When they start making great choices and You can accomplish that you can set that Up yeah you just can’t rush the process That’s right Another thing that i’ve noticed in that A lot of people are saying uh is like Morgan said here Blue tacon seven month old having Trouble with probably listening Recall mostly outside I see uh Becky mentioned the same similar thing A five-month-old portuguese water dog And border collie next response to name Has become hit and miss What’s the first thing we do when any Skill becomes hit and miss i’m actually Just gonna we’ll be right back I’ll be but kennel’s there Um so if you are having trouble with Recalls or response to name um the most Important thing that you need to do is Take away the opportunity for your dog To easily ignore those things so that Might be when you you know let them out
In the backyard to do their business or You know to have some off-leash playtime Maybe that doesn’t happen anymore maybe You go out with them on a leash and you Work on that recall you you train Through it so that your dog is not Getting an opportunity to ignore you um You know when things like that happen These skills specifically responding to Their name and recall typically why they Are Not doing well Is people will call the dog’s name or Say come And they say it multiple times or they Get louder they start to get more Frustrated with every call or they you Know say oh he’s not listening and then You get the cookie out you say hey look I have treats and the dog goes ha ha i Just ignore you for ten times and then You’re gonna walk to that cookie bin and You’re gonna bribe me to come and then I’ll come and they start to train you Rather than the other way around so you Need to break the cycle of your dog’s Ability to be making those choices by Training your recall on a more regular Basis to build value for coming and then In In Conjunction with that not putting them In a situation where you’re going to Call them unless they have a lot of
Reliability so the long lines on um and You go through the necessary steps to Get them to respond um for mods uh Barbara brady drop the super chat thank You for that barbara We’ll just keep an eye out for a comment Um or question uh couple couple super Chats came in that i think are really Important to to talk about um i’ve kind Of oh i wanted to mention this because Uh liz says have a tough time with uh my Yorkie pulling me on uh my with him Yoking me on leash uh pulling me to Chase birds rabbits etc he’s good with Walking 75 of the time and he’s nine Months saturday morning we have a video Coming out that’s going to be perfect For you if you have if you’re having Struggles with your dog Seeing distractions outside and pulling You Saturday morning 7 15 eastern standard Time check out the channel You guys uh instructor carol takes a Deep deep dive in a skill that you Absolutely want to have something that Changed my leash walking for sure uh and It’s just a general skill that you you Definitely want to see so make sure you Are there to check that out on saturday Morning uh i see cala i hope it’s calla Maybe kayla calla donaldson my dog Doesn’t care for food too much or Or my praise or even toys how can i
Figure out how to reward him to get him To do things This is a hard one to answer without Asking more questions so uh that is the Challenge of youtube versus my training Yeah for sure uh so generally speaking Um Your dog has to eat at some point in the Day so maybe you need to be timing your Training for when your dog is is hungry For breakfast or dinner so hopefully You’re not just putting the bowl down And just letting your dog eat whenever It wants to so that would be called free Feeding so meal feeding is really Important you could even change to hand Feeding for a while so rather than Putting the food in the bowl you just Put the food in the bowl but then you Use your hand to feed the dog to build More value for you Whether you make the dog work at for you During that time or whether you just Start off by feeding them that would be A helpful thing um if your dog has A lot of access to like if you have toys In your house just randomly lying around For your dog to play with whenever you Want pick all of the toys up every Single toy pick it up unless you want to Leave out like two bones or things that Are more like um Chew toys not interactive toys but Anything that could be considered a play
Toy pick it up and and remove it Completely and then you’re going to Bring one out at a time And use that to motivate the dog Think about different times of the day That you’re going to be training because Some dogs have more energetic situations At times of the day than not uh and also Where are you practicing like are you in The kitchen when there’s not much going On and your dog’s not listening um are You outside are you at the park well Where are you that you’re doing this um You know you want to A make sure you have good motivators to Get your dog to listen but at the same Time you need to make sure that you Start off like literally like white room Like nothing going on in there so that The dog really doesn’t have any other Choices but to connect with you um this Is one i think a lot of people uh Struggle with and they say well my dog Just doesn’t want you just give up he Doesn’t want toys uh he’s just he just Doesn’t what’s the magic answer but um It’s because they’re putting the dog in An overwhelming situation with too many Distractions maybe the dog’s a little Worried too much stimulation i mean it’s Pretty hard to learn math when you’re at Disneyland and there’s all these sights And sounds and smells and all those Delicious giant lollipops and like the
Ice cream uh uh what’s his name mickey Mouse there’s there’s just so much going On same thing could be happening for Your dog yeah we sort of we’re gonna Throw a bunch of things at the wall in This instance but this is oftentimes Like these are the kinds of fine-tuning Questions that we love to answer in our Online training group where we can get More specific because we get to see you We get to see your dog and learn a Little bit more about you so if that’s Something you’re interested in check it Out in the description below for our Life skills program uh and coffee Casualty uh my eight-month-old pup never Lets me relax oh thanks guys for the Super chats My eight-month-old pup never lets me Relax outside because she’s constantly Eating grass in weeds three seconds with A toy then she’s chomping the ground Advice So let’s talk a little bit about um you Know management talk a little bit about Keeping the dog engaged and you know i Know there’s there’s a few different Things that instructors have done in This situation specifically with chewing On grass That might be you know appropriate for Their dogs but let’s talk a little bit About management in that situation yeah It sort of sounds when i’m reading it
That you’re letting the puppy uh eat Grass and weeds lets me relax outside Because she’s constantly Uh oh never lets me relax i miss the Word never i thought oh sounds like She’s just letting the dog do it um Yeah it can be difficult when the dogs Are are constantly You know biting grass and weeds and you Know that’s everywhere so it’s really Hard to avoid that that situation um I would two things uh i would try to Make sure that you are working on Um some skills that can redirect the Dog’s attention on you in situations Where you’re not around the grass and The weeds so inside the house or maybe On the driveway work on your response Name work on your leave at work on Building value for you so that your dog Has a bit more experience and Love for those commands when you then Move to the grass area make sure that Your dog is on a leash or line so that You can prevent them from doing that And then you may even take some of those Grass and weeds and Pick some and take it inside and work With it as a distraction in the comfort Of your home where you can control it Because when you’re in that scenario and You’re trying to get your dog to listen It’s kind of what just ken said about Controlling the environment you’re
You’re around it constantly so you Really don’t get a break you don’t get An opportunity to to have a moment of Success which is not a great way to Build skills or train a dog so you want To Change the environment to be less Distracting and then bring the Distractions in Until you can work the reverse and go Back to your original Uh location of being outside okay uh I’ve got a super chat in from barbara Brady yeah and the other thing is you Might just Be be intentional about that outside When you’re doing stuff outside with Your puppy you know if if she’s not Paying a female if she’s not paying Attention maybe it’s just not that Interesting so you know get the dog Reengaged and the only time you’re out There is when you you’re you’re tiring Her out you’re doing fun things she’s Engaged with you and then maybe you know Half of your training session doesn’t Happen in the yard where she can chew on The grass yeah kind of like what i said To the the last uh girl that that asked About the dog not being motivated you Know go outside with your dog’s Breakfast or dinner and practice some Response names and some recalls you need To be
Using your dog’s natural drive for Something to your advantage barbara Brady thank you for the super chat I messed up super chat the trainer i Went to said to only use her name for The recall but she doesn’t respond Let’s talk a little bit about How you what happens if you’ve taught Something because Here’s the thing about your your dog’s Uh That learning threshold the teenage Phase is oftentimes you teach these Skills and you’ll use them when in Training and then you won’t really use Them much and enough time these are Perishable skills that enough time goes By that they will stop listing but it Sounds like in barbara’s case she never Really had a great response But the next steps are the same yeah you Know what are you going to do to to Re-engage that dog for that for the Response for the recall or if you have a Dog who’s just not listening outside but They did it great at one point in time Which is common of the teenage phase What do they do next Uh why don’t you answer it because i Feel like i’ve said the same answer now So maybe you’ll say it differently yeah So so basically you’re going to have to Re-teach the command you’re going to Start from the very beginning where
You’re building value with restrained Recalls you’re getting the dog really Excited but maybe you don’t use your Dog’s name clearly barbara your your Puppy or young dog i’m not sure how old The dog was has it’s just Lost value and i’ll tell you where we See this a lot when somebody’s like um Uh spot sit spot down spot food spot sit Spot walk spot spot spots Literally why we personally don’t teach A recall on the name yeah we i mean it’s Great if they come on their name but we Use the name as more of an attention Getter so we would say like you know Spot sit or spot come or spot whatever Um Because you can just get a little bit More reliability the name is so overused Yeah uh naturally so we we’re just a Little bit careful about that and your Recall can be a lifesaver yeah so this We want this skill to be absolutely Fail-proof and that’s how we teach it so You know again i would go back to you’re Going to come up with a new word for it Doesn’t matter what the word is again These are just sounds you know we’re Teaching our dogs that these connected Sounds mean something And um i think Dan i might have a video on a puppy Recall here that will be great for Barbara and this will be the starting
Point this will be your starting point And then there’s an evolution which you Know we have content available for but Go back to the basics so if this word Doesn’t work anymore it’s a throwaway You’re gonna teach your cookie except The word is the name so you do need to Go back and you need to work on the name But you’re going to change the meaning Of the name i’m not going to expect a Recall your dog needs to learn to Respond to their name so you need to go Back and Reinforce the dog so training the dog How to respond to their name um and then You also need to do a similar thing uh With your recall And stop saying the names that’s right In situations where your dog can’t is Not going to listen to you maybe you say The name in your automatically putting Food on the nose and drawing their Attention towards you every single time For a period of time until your dog Starts to do it more independently but You need to stop the rehearsal of the Bad stuff and go back and build more Reinforcement for the good stuff audit Yourself be really aware every time you Say cookie be aware like oh geez did i Mean to use it there was i training it Was like actually teaching cookies how Many times did i just say it That’s that’s right and you know it’s so
Often something like that will happen With the name the other one is sit the Amount of times that people say sit down Or They come command yeah like the amount Of time people say or leave it or Anything just anything yeah i guess so Yeah but be be aware that especially During this teenage phase you’re going To be really critical of your dog if if They start to get slower responses super Common could be expected because of all These new challenges as well as some of Those physical and hormonal changes You’re just going to train it i mean you Have the skills you have the tools if You’ve gotten to that point yeah but be Aware maybe you didn’t have that skill Before i don’t want you to default and Say like ah just the teenage phase i Guess there’s nothing we can do or That’s to be expected because that’s Just um an excuse and uh you know i i I there’s just driving me so nuts when People say like well he’s a he’s a Nikita he’ll never do this oh well That’s a terrier this will never happen Well You know he’s a he’s a treeing walker Hound this will you know this thing will Never it’ll never be successful We have dogs so many dogs come through Our training facility and all different Breeds all different breeds it’s really
So exciting to see And we’ll have those specific breeds who Are superstars but it all comes down to The information and it comes down to Consistency so as you enter these Developmental phases these are these Developmental thresholds as you enter The teenage phase Be critical of the choices you’re making Because you can have these super high Expectations of your dog and you’ll be Able to train through it and then you Won’t have have to use the excuse like Well there guess it’s because he’s seven Months old yeah um because it’s just not A great excuse to have yeah barbara Dropping the super sticker with the Bravo i guess it’s a little fox or Something Thank you for the super sticker cute Ashley dropping the super chat oh step By one Rooster upstairs i think so yeah Um Where did ashley’s go i don’t know if You guys can hear our puppy you probably Can’t but he’s playing with his bone in His crate in the kitchen above and he Literally sounds like a rooster Um ashley with the Super chat Um my four month old sheep of doodle Jumps on us grabs and bites us Aggressively when super excited or
Doesn’t want to do something what do we Do in the moment so let’s talk a little Bit about house line puppy house line You know what you can do some of the Other leadership choices that don’t Allow the dog to get to this point yeah Um definitely at four months it’s very Young so you know that’s this is a Really important time to get on this so That it doesn’t continue to go any Further um but i would highly suggest That you have this puppy on a leash or a Line all the time even when you’re not Going on walks so anytime the puppy’s Out of its crate um you need to be Having a leash or a line on because what You need to be able to settle the dog And stop the dog maybe even get the dog Into a sit we need to do so by being Very calm about how we do it um by Having a leash on it allows us to do That if we’re pulling our hands away or Pushing the dog off or moving away from Them it just allows the dog to learn They can control you with their with Their mouth so if you have a leash on You can shorten up and and have the dog Sit very quickly and you can de-escalate The situation in a very calm and Assertive manner without getting um Upset with the dog um And as important as that is giving the Dog something else to do so think about Those times when your dog is jumping up
And grabbing and biting you well what Happens prior to that that you could um Have more control maybe you need to work More on sitting on a loose leash or Lying on a bed and holding position or Things that your dog can do that’s more Productive that stops that from Happening in the first place Absolutely so i should say to you that Um you know what i’ve given you is a General um Comment because every dog is a little Bit different and there’s you know Specific technique and all these things That need to happen but these are all Things like teaching the response name And the recall from step one teaching Your dog not to jump up and bite and all Those those types of things these are All things that we work on In both puppy essentials and uh life Skills uh where we can do step by step And i think uh there are some fabulous Questions tonight but there were Certainly questions where it’s nice to Ask more about what’s happening because Then we can give you more personalized Feedback about what you need to do and i Think that’s really the the biggest Difference between our youtube videos And actually going in the program where You get access to an instructor where we Can have a conversation and we can get You on the right track help you with
Your technique i love this question uh Because liz sort of answered ask it as You were talking about it but is it Really possible to do dog training Online and even we were skeptical yep Five you six years ago before we figured Out you know an important step that Needs to be taken There’s a million and one videos out There on dog training there’s a million Different you know uh Uh ways to do zoom calls that you know Are maybe less than effective but when You When the trainers start to build a Relationship with you and your dog and Start to understand what the steps are i Mean these guys are training you know Our trainers are however many i don’t Even i won’t even hazard a guest we’ve Helped more than a hundred thousand dogs Like well over that now so these guys Are training all kinds of dogs and they Can recognize some of the patterns and Give you proactive information that’s Specific to your dog specific to your Breed and the amount uh we have a we Have like a A um An inter-office communication system That we use and we have one part that Shows off like the really great stories And great messages that we get from Students and she’s on here tonight but
The amount i hear about instructor Robbie from our staff our students that Are like rob instructor robbie you’ve Changed everything we did a one-hour Zoom private or from being in the life Skills program and listen i don’t ha i’m Not here to pitch this this wasn’t the Goal but i’ll tell you this is exactly The program i’d want if i were in your Shoes because remember i was a student Too so 15 years ago i went to mccann dogs not Knowing the first thing about dog Training but we built the system so that It actually helped people so it’s not a Bunch of videos that’s what you know Youtube is for us we just we get to Create fun stuff and put it up there to Help you yeah but in our online programs We get to build a relationship we get to Understand where your challenges might Be what your specific challenges are in Your environment we have students from Like Australia and yeah you know some of These dry arid countries you know in the Middle east it’s really remarkable yeah And and we can help those guys as much As we can help someone who is a student From burlington that’s online everybody Has the same 20 minutes away puppy Training problems in every country all Of the dogs do the same things wrong so It doesn’t matter where you are but yeah
We really tried to best our best with Our online programs to have as much Interaction as possible so that you’re Not just following a video and trying to Figure things out by yourself um there Really is a lot of guidance At that four month mark those two Developmental changes uh thresholds for Your dog in their teenage face that four Month mark your puppy’s world gets a lot Bigger you need to make sure that you Are aware of the choices that you’re Making understand that this is new Challenges for them but they’re also Getting more confident and outgoing so Make sure that you’re critical of your Management when you get to the seven Month mark they’re bigger they’re Stronger maybe it’s been a long time Since you did that training and you need To go back to some of the basics or at Least take a step back so that you can Help them be successful but as you’re Working through the puppy training Teenage phase i want you to understand That when they start to slow down you Need to pick things up a little bit when Their turns get slower you need to help Them out a little bit more and uh You won’t be using the excuse well i Guess it’s just a teenage face anymore Yeah do you have anything else I don’t think so it was a great one Awesome darlene welcome to the heart dog
