In today’s show we’re going to talk About some of the important tips that You should be aware of the things you Can do to make your walks a pleasure so That you’re not so frustrated if you’re If you’re fed up when you get up and you Don’t feel like going for a walk today Tonight is a show for you on that note I’m Ken steep I’m Cal mechanic welcome Back to McCann dogs Now if this is your first time here We’ve got a couple super chats we’ve got A couple member messages that we have in The queue but we’re gonna get to a Couple things maybe this is your first Time here maybe this is the first time You’ve joined us here in the train Station and uh you’re like who on Earth Are these people well my name’s why is That guy’s jokes not funny yeah why is That guy so hilarious is this a comedy Show I can’t tell you I’m Ken steepe this is kale McCann we’re Professional dog trainers at McCann dogs In fact it’s Kale’s family business you Grew up in dog training I did yeah and Something exciting about the fact it’s a Family business very exciting because we Are celebrating our 40th year Anniversary of our family’s business This year which is pretty incredible and Um we’re really stoked because at the End uh I guess mid-october we are Actually hosting a huge 40th anniversary

Whole show about leash walking And this is something we spend a long Time we’ve got puppies having a party Behind us here in the studio puppies It’s even better uh one of our 15 year Old dogs funky monkey has decided that She’s going to have a little wrestle With Grant just off just off camera it’s So nice when the old dogs still like Feel that they want to play and be silly Yeah Um but uh in terms of leash walking this Is something that we’ll spend you know Eight nine weeks on with our students And you know fine-tuning some of the Processes and tonight we want to talk to You about some of like the adjustments That you can make honestly uh you know Help me a huge amount was a equipment Change changing the equipment a little Bit massive difference with my first dog And then as an instructor when I’d Suggest for the when it was right for The dog when it suggest an equipment Change you could see I mean sometimes It’s an instant difference it just gives It’s like having power steering yeah the Conversation with a woman today who’s Like oh my goodness halfway through the Program with her dog and she was Struggling with um she’s a little German Shepherd cross nice dog but just super Busy and we recommended a A Gentle Leader for her last week and she walked
Into class this week and she said I Walked all the way from my car all the Way to my chair and my dog didn’t pull Once she was like so delighted and Because she’s been so frustrated so it Was so nice to see that okay guys you Can just take it down we’re trying to do A train station we’re a little busy here Um okay there’s something I was just About to do and I’ve it’s escaped me now Are you gonna go back and find that Super Chat yes that’s exactly what’s Going to be thank you uh we had a couple Super chats uh before we got started and I see a question from our members so We’ll jump on that in a second and Hollington quiet thank you for the Super Chat And asks uh our nine-week-old Cockapoo Is mouthy especially playing two-person Recall or retrieve she’s so enthusiastic About success she bites her hands and Legs how do we praise her for coming Without rehearsing the biting Um well you need to make sure that your Um number one keeping her on some type Of leash or long line so that you have Good uh good control Um and then secondly you need to make Sure that you’re using some type of Reward that you can reinforce her with Before she has a chance to you know get Wild and crazy when she gets to you you Might use food in your hands you might
Drop your hands a little bit lower as She gets close put the food out lure her In maybe to a sit so that she has more Of a job to do when she gets you which Is more calm and controlled rather than Being silly to jump and bite uh and I Would put a lot more emphasis on sitting And being calm and making that the the Fun part and then maybe once she’s able To sit and be calm for a few minutes Then not minutes I meant to say seconds Not minutes Um then you could release and have a Little game of tug from there but you Need to make sure that you’re teaching Her that different behaviors that you Love are also ones that she can love by Just making sure you make it really easy For the for her to do them and then get Reinforced it’s funny and we’ll talk a Little bit about this in the walking but What you reward is what you’re going to Get or what you’re more likely to get so When when it comes to that behavior Specifically make sure you’re not Rewarding too early before you’ve Ultimately got what you really want I Can totally understand the rush though Like oh she did such a great job Bringing it back and then getting Excited yeah Um but so so um I just want to say one Thing before you want so what their what They are rewarded for is what they do
Again also means that when they’re doing Something like nipping and biting and Jumping or pulling on a leash and then They get to successfully go towards Something that they want that is also The rehearsal of them doing something That’s rewarding so I think sometimes When we make that statement what they What they get rewarded for is what they Repeat people automatically think that’s Us rewarding the dog which is so true But what you need to remember with dog Training is that if your dog is Rehearsing bad things but those bad Things are something that the dog finds Rewarding like pulling towards a Distraction or getting to jump and bite At you to the dog from the dog’s Perspective they are having a riot when They do those things therefore if they Will just keep repeating them so it Works on on both sides of the story Which is why prevention is so incredibly Important when it comes to things that The dogs are rehearsing that we don’t Love but they are really excited by we Need to stop that from happening so that We can change where the reinforcement Comes from and here’s something that Might be too deep of a suggestion but It’s an important one here’s something I Love is a good segue so when we’re Talking about leash walking and I share So many people who post comments or ask
Us questions and say like is how am I Supposed to do this the moment I walk Out the door I’ve lost control there’s Not an there’s not a minute when my dog Is on a loose leash and we talk a lot Here about your only your Only Rule yeah There’s a little spider web in here in The studio Um you’re only rewarding when you have a Loose leash so what does that mean in Um that this is really good insight for You as a new dog owner or a dog owner Who’s struggling with your training is Rewards aren’t just food treats and They’re not just toys for some dogs it’s The act the action of moving towards Something it’s the action of getting Outside and into that environment where They know you have a little bit less Control and they can like just take in All the sight sounds and smells so if You have a dog who goes completely crazy The moment you get outside the door Where should your first win be where can You get in some reinforcement we’ve Talked a little bit this about this on The channel and um it was uh shoot I Think it was maybe instructor Carol that We shot the video with or maybe anyway One of our I think is instructor Carol Where we did this video where we did an Exercise that we we will work on where You you you’re rewarding Um a sit at your side in control
Position we call it uh before you leave The house that’s the only way you’re Getting out the door Yeah that’s the only way you’re getting Out the door Dashers uh I don’t remember Maybe Dan will find it but let’s talk About that for a minute yeah let’s talk About reward in that situation and Honestly if you have a dog when when we Bring our young dogs up through training This is something we’ll do almost every Time when we’re trying to get You have to show your dog that you’re Worth listening to and this is a great Way to do that especially if there’s Something that they really want like Running going outside let’s talk about That yeah you need to really start by Having the right environment to train Your dog in because sometimes what Happens is kind of saying is you get out To a high distraction area and you’re Going there without any skills Underneath your belt so it’s not you Know unusual to think that the dog’s Going to walk poorly they don’t know What they’re doing yet and you know it’s Like going and doing a University test And you’ve not even like passed you know Grade one or kindergarten it’s just two Totally different um levels yeah so when You’re practicing um or when you’re Getting to the point where you want to Walk with your dog it really starts
Right number one at home you could Practice Um at home when there’s no distractions Maybe that’s in your kitchen maybe That’s up and down your hallway maybe That’s you know in the basement or maybe In the backyard when it’s a quiet time In the neighborhood and there’s not much Going on so you want to start with a Good success but but in terms of what Kevin was talking about and the door Actually opening the door they’ve had a Lot of associations with you opening the Door and then being like walk time and Then they take off then you need to Change the narrative there you might for Um example have your dog sit on a loose Leash in control position We have videos where we talk about that If you’re not sure what that is and you Might open the door like a crack and Then reward your dog for maintaining the Set because what will happen is dog Looks for dogs look for triggers or dogs Look for clues or Um things that are going to say this Exciting thing is about to happen and a Lot of dogs will put together when Mom Opens the door we go for a walk and it’s Time to to play and be crazy so I might Open the door a sliver and then if my Dog decides to go Bonkers I can close The door and I can reestablish my Control in the sit and then I might try
Again open the door sliver and I can get To the point where I can open and close That door a little bit at a time while My dog maintains the sit then I know I’m Ready to move to the next step which Might be seeing if I can open that door Completely wide and then reward my dog From there the thing that is hard about Teaching dogs to walk and lots of other Behaviors but since that’s the topic Tonight is that people either don’t know How or they don’t want to do the work That it takes to get their dog to walk On a loose I will tell you of the five Or six hundred dogs that we get at our School every single week Maybe Five of them Naturally don’t pull on the leash maybe Two of them most dogs because they are Excited to go out into the future and Excite and be excited to the Future That’s right they will be pulling and so It’s very very normal for dogs to do That but it also takes a lot of work It’s not just slap the leash on or slap The generator on or hold treats in your Hand and boom your dog will be perfect It really doesn’t work like that there Is a lot of work involved and if you Want to have really good results you Have to put the repetition in and the Repetition has to be good stuff so if You’re doing all this hard work to train
Your dog and then in addition to that You’re also going on daily walks around The neighborhood where they drag you for The entire time it’s impossible for the Dog to make changes so if you really Want to make changes now people are Shocked when we say stop walking them Until you train them to walk well what Am I supposed to do with them we have Answers for that as well but you can’t Rehearse the bad stuff and then expect That you when you do the smallest amount Of training that all of a sudden you’re Going to have these big wins that’s huge And I want you you to think this in your Mind when when you’re when you have a Dog in training and you’re maybe Struggling with walking on leash you’re Going for wins you’re not going for Walks you’re going for wins and maybe That first win happens before you leave The house you know maybe you’re uh you Know maybe you live in like a detached Residential place maybe it’s like Walking down the pathway to down the Driveway to the sidewalk maybe live in An apartment complex and that nice Walking it happens you know on the way Out the parking lot but that’s it Um there’s instructor Steve will often Say uh teaching your dog to walk and Taking your dog for a walk or different Things so when you’re in train you’re Gonna get there and you’re gonna get
There faster if you’re intentional about Going for those wins but at this point You really need to focus on getting good Walking getting the stuff that you can Reward getting the stuff that your dog Isn’t struggling because you are using They’re using a different part of their Brain when they’re at the end of that Tight leash and they’re focused on the World around them it’s not a really Natural thing the dogs don’t naturally Want to walk in at our side I mean There’s just no very few drugs yeah two Out of the five or six hundred that we Have each week it was a guesstimate I Know it could maybe be one well yeah who Knows I mean really we haven’t counted But the point is it’s not that’s right Yeah it’s very unnatural so we need to Show our dog through you know history Reinforcement and and lots of reward and Like all the skills we’ll talk about Tonight we need to show our dog that It’s valuable to remain there and uh When you’re thinking about that that Instead of focusing on okay I’ve got a Block or I’ve got you know a kilometer Or I want to walk a mile and a half or Whatever the distance is not about the Distance because you’re going for the Win you’re not going for the walk think About that a couple of super chats here That I want to get to Um Christiana figgin I’m we’re gonna
Let’s talk a little bit about leash Management okay and so maybe we could do A little demo for for uh Christiana okay Um and we can talk about leash Management there I’m squinting because I Can’t see it can you unhigh oh I can see It I can see it yeah so that’s great It’s hard to see okay can you see now Okay Renee Warren hi I have a 12 year Old who’s going to want to dote on the On the new pop with playtime and Cuddles I get it Um how can I incorporate that with all The steps of bringing a new puppy home With without either of them missing out I’m assuming the 12 year old is a child And not another dog I think so I think so Are you waiting for me to answer it yeah Yeah okay Um so Renee having kids and dogs at the Same time is Um great super fun uh but it also can be Really challenging as well Um 12 years old is actually a really Great age because they’re still young to You know have fun and and that type of Thing but they’re also old enough now That you can actually start to have them You know learn how to be part of the Training Um from our experience though one of the Things that we find works best when You’re incorporating kids into the
Training is to have the um yes child Awesome is to have the adults in the Family get some basic knowledge Um accomplished with the puppy get the Puppy to understand a basic idea and Then have the kids join in from there Versus having the kids start right from The beginning and teaching something With the exception of something Um light-hearted like trick training That would be an awesome thing to get Your 12 year old Incorporated with Um but if it’s things like recalls Nipping biting walking on leash you know All those types of things it’s really Good to have you start on the basics First and then have them incorporate Incorporate themselves from there it Also is really important as much as you Know play time and cuddles and all that Stuff is really really great Um you also want to make sure that the Puppy’s understanding kind of what their Role is and how to be respectful in Terms of their nipping and biting and Control sometimes if they’re getting you Know held and cuddled and kissed and all These things all the time Um well it can be overwhelming and Sometimes it blurs the waters a little Bit with the puppies thinking whether They should treat the kids as just Litter mates and tug toys and buddies or Whether they need to actually listen and
Respect them Um so it’s something that you just want To navigate uh quite gradually and also Wait to see what kind of puppy you have If you have a dog that’s a little wild And crazy then it might be a longer time Before they have a lot of interaction if You have a pretty chill dog then it Might be a little bit faster so a lot of It is puppy dependent as well for sure Um Here Um From 2K My trainer suggested a Martingale caller From my hyper and staff halty rubbed Asura on the note on his nose do you Have any thoughts on the Martingale Collars Um we don’t really use Martin Gill Callers if I’m being perfectly honest Um it’s they’re they’re okay but they Don’t really give you the same type of Control as like a well-fit flat Buckle Collar or we are big lovers of the head Collar called A Gentle Leader which is Quite a different product than uh than The halty It works a little bit differently it Sits on the dog’s head a little bit Differently it doesn’t slide back and Forth yeah so it doesn’t have that that Um friction the same friction that a Halti does so my recommendation would be
To with a dog that’s hyper amped off They’re big and strong I would maybe Look into using a Gentle Leader because It’ll give you the same control-ish as a Halty will just fit better it will work Better it will be more comfortable Martin gills are okay Um but they they just we haven’t found Them to be as effective as some of the The other options I think uh yeah this Sometimes this question uh comes up and You don’t really use them in our Training we don’t and here’s why I mean For some dogs okay I’m going to give you This sort of the um I don’t know what The uh the exception to the rule some Dogs especially the pointy little headed Dogs like uh we have one Um you know it’s hard to get a collar That fits right their neck is like the Same size as their heads right that the Collar won’t slip off and in that Situation I mean you know I’d probably Work pretty hard to try to find a color That did a better job than a Martingale But maybe Martingale would be a Reasonable caller to use Big white heads no so that’s not yeah That’s not the case so with that in mind Um the problem with the Martingale is It’s a dynamic collar so it you know it Tightens up as there’s more tension Added it’s also fairly wide so when We’re looking at our um the appropriate
Equipment we choose a flat Buckle collar To start with that’s all you know that’s Sort of a starting point it is not a Dynamic collar so when there’s tension On the leash your dog can feel the pull You know your dog’s leaning into it and They’re pulling and it’s also more Narrow it’s not super wide like the Martingales often are oh there’s there We go so you know you have even for the Big strong dogs you’re able what a fancy Color this is Before I get it through I know you can Find a collar like that yes yeah Mechanics that store Um with this you know we can turn our Dogs you know we can we can guide it Sits up nice and high on their head and We have the ability to sort of turn them More easily with the Martin Gale there’d Be stretched they’ll be tension and the Thing I really want to get to here is We are so focused when we’re teaching Walking training from day one on the Leash being loose we want you to think About the fact that you have and kill Maybe we’ll do a little show and Teller Like demo here shortly but we want you To be focused on keeping this leash or The clip of the leash hanging down the Clip right here hanging down so there’s A gentle J shape in the leash and people Say oh I could that could never happen That’s your goal if you can’t get
Something here then you’ve either got to Change the location change the reward Change something so that you can get Some loose leash in there and even when I mean when we first start you know our First couple lessons of leash walking Training we’re literally doing the Donkey and carrot thing we’re making Sure that that dog is solely focused on Treats at that point so we can maintain This loose leash because what they’ll Learn and we’ll talk a little bit about It tonight but what you’re you’ll see Your dog start to learn is that when This happens it’s time to check in or When this happens it’s time to take up Your foot off the gas a little bit so They move back into position but it’s Important that there’s that really Direct connection between your dog’s Neck and the leash so that they can feel That tension on the Martingale Unfortunately it slides and it tightens And it’s a little bit less clear so it’s Harder for the dog to know what what That point is where that threshold is uh Denise just I just saw a question pop up There do you use a normal collar did you Use a normal collar for your poodle or You shouldn’t use one for small dogs so If you guys don’t know we have a toy Poodle named Tippy Shake she’s so cute Yeah Denise I used a flat Buckle collar With her I used our size small and when
She was really little I started with a Cat collar on her because she was so so Tiny and then once she got about life Skills age so about four months old or So I was able to put this smallest size Of a collar on her because it’s super Adjustable and that’s what I trained her On throughout her entire uh Tire process This is good so so um some people will Say like oh as soon as I put a collar on My dog they’re choking and coughing and If that’s the case then you need to Change you’re missing something yeah You’re missing something your dog is Pulling or you’re accidentally creating A tight leash but We want so our training our focus is to Have the dog choose that position and It’s quite simply done you’re going to See a massive spider right there if you Don’t get that little guy Um the way to do that is by reinforcing The good stuff and showing them like When they’re wrong you guide them back And bring them back into position but um Oh I’ve lost my train of thought after That little spider attack Um Oh if your dog is choking if your dog is Choking it’s you’re not training you’re Not in training mode at that point so You need to figure out how you can get That get your dog back on a loose leash And they shouldn’t be pulling you down
The street they shouldn’t be dragging You down the street uh what you dogs Will they’ll have to be leaning into That leash a little bit to get that Pulling to get that to get that choking And coughing once that starts happening Think to yourself okay something’s wrong Here what do I have to change to take That that tension that pressure off the Leash and I think what we can’t drive Home enough is that this is just Training So eventually you’re we want You to be able to go for long walks we Want to be able to go for a hike in the Mountains and take your leash off and Let your dog run and come back and and You know both of you love life but um What’s important to remember is that in The early stages when your dog doesn’t Have training you can’t put the leash on Put the collar on whatever it is and Then go out and expect your dog to walk Without doing all of the foundational Training that comes first so a lot of Times when we say he’s like stop walking Your dogs before you’ve trained them Um there’s so much that you can do with Your dog to teach the dog that walking Close to you is very valuable because Until my dog learns that walking on a Loose leash beside me is more enjoyable Than pulling towards that distraction I’m not going to have a lot of success So it’s really important that the
Foundational teaching of loose leash Walking which is what we Do so much of in our our training it Needs to be done without a lot of Distraction so we have a nine month old Um nine and a half month old young dog He’s fast asleep in that crate behind us Right now five alive and um for the First several months of his life I Didn’t really take him for a walk around My block but I did so much Lee straining With him around the house up and down The hallway I did so much leash training In my driveway I have great videos of Him walking past foods of Bowl uh bowls Of food Um tug toys Ken would bounce a tennis Ball and I would practice walking him Around so that we were training and Learning how to be at my side and while I did that I had steak I had chicken Wieners I had cheese I had really high Value things so he was like oh my God I Love being close to you this is the best Thing ever and now nine and a half Months later when I do take him out and About Um not that he’s perfect because he’s Still a puppy and he’s in training and He’s in training but generally speaking He understands what his job is because He said so much value and he has had Zero rehearsal of pulling me around the Block because he’s never done that
Um so that’s why it’s it’s so important Bring out the fiber we could bring out The fiber also uh Lisa Richardson high five yep That was almost gonna be his name Actually it was going to be high five But I know a few dogs named high five And also five alive is like the best Drink ever as you would say yeah he had Some before the train station start Um to reiterate your point uh think About what your dog what the information Your dog would need to be able to drag That leash on the ground what Information your dog would need to be Able to go for a walk standing walking Right beside you with no leash on Because as we move through the Progressions in our classes we get to Points where the dogs don’t have leashes On you know we get to levels where they Have like maybe they have a tab or just Like they’re dragging a house line or Something like that and that all comes From good information so no matter where You are what you’re working on in your Leash walking training right now think About would this work if I wasn’t Holding this leash you know you have to Wonder so especially when you’re Rewarding you’re rewarding the great Stuff you’re rewarding the good stuff Okay let’s talk me you know uh I think We can answer chrysana’s uh question
With some leash management stuff and I Can see like when we’re talking little Bit about you know sit and start Position and how to maintain a loose Leash for questions specifically had to Do with uh the dog jumping off while They’re walking and getting tangled in The getting tangled in the leash yeah Which is not uncommon we have some Pretty I don’t know some pretty consistent That’s not really the word I’m looking For we very we’re careful we’re careful Deliberate we’re very intentional and Deliberate about how we manage the leash Especially during leash walking training Because it’s going to give you better Timing and it’s going to allow you to Not get tangled up in the leash it’s not Going to let your dog get far enough Away that they’re super distracted when They’re in the learning phase but with No further Ado I mean you guys don’t Want to see me you’re going to see the Star of the show uh little five alive so Uh why don’t we head on over to the Train station Peppa Okay I’ve already made my first dog Training mistake and that is I just Grabbed some kibble and it’s crunchy and I’ll tell you why that’s a mistake is When you’re teaching your dog to walk You don’t really want to use a type of Reward that they have to stop and chew
For 10 years so I’m hoping that he gets Faster I’ve been eating the food but it Was just the first thing that I grabbed Now first things first when we’re Teaching our dogs to walk on a leash and This is going to be really helpful what Was that woman’s name that asked the Question okay what’s up chrisanna Um so it’s important that when you’re Holding the leash that you do gather up The excess people to handle is great but If I take five for a walk on the end of A six foot leash he has an opportunity To get away from me out of a lot of Control and also too he’s going to get His leash Tangled within his legs a Little bit more easily so when we’re Walking we actually so you can see the Thumb is through the handle of my leash When we’re walking we actually gather up A loop of leash into our right hands so That I have enough leash left over that It can be loose on his collar but it’s Tight enough or gathered up enough that I have good control the other thing that I want to be able to do if I have a dog That’s doing a lot of jumping is I need To start teaching him to be at my side While he’s being calm and subtle so Before I even show you anything about The walking one of the things that we Master first before we do walking is Teaching our dog that’s sitting and Being close to our side on a loose leash
Is really valuable we call this exercise Control position we’ve referenced it a Few times in the uh chat or in the live Already so with five sitting at my left Hand side I can build value for build For him sitting at my left hand side by Rewarding him on a loose leash now five Knows how to do this you can see okay Five okay he understands to hold a sit But I’ll tell you that when you first Start it’s not uncommon for you to have Your dog sit at your left hand side you Give them a treat and before you can do Anything else boom they’re up and out of Position right away because they don’t See the point of sitting at the Left-hand side so when you teach this You’re just going to keep Gathering up Your leash and placing your dog back Into your side very gently but the most Important step is what I just did a Moment ago I put slack in my leash if I Do this and I hold poor five on a tight Leash and reward him I’m teaching him Tight leashes are good don’t use your Brain you don’t have to do anything here Because I’m going to do everything for You so once he’s sitting I need to go Back to putting that gentle J in the Leash you can see my clip of my leash is Pointing towards the floor here Okay yep it’s pointing towards the floor Oops sit so if he gets up I’m going to Place him back now I’m going to put
Slack in the leash and I’m gonna see What choice he makes now he’s making the Choice to stay near me on a loose leash Yes and I’m going to reward that good Boy so if he can’t do this you can zoom Out now come Um if he can’t do this he’s not going to Be able to to walk he needs to Understand to be respectful of my side And to stay close on a loose leash so Once I’ve practiced that and that’s Going to take several sessions then I Can move towards teaching him that Walking on my left hand side is valuable Okay now in order to do that we like to Start off by using some type of food Reward to lure our dogs to our side and I know whenever we introduce this people Will often say well I don’t want my dog Just to walk because I’m holding food on On their nose we don’t either in fact Halfway through our life skills program We show you how to wean off of the food But in the early stages we need Something that motivates the dog to want To be at our side that’s more exciting Than what’s going on around you which is Why we start in a very low distracting Environment so we call it the white room Technique so you’re in a room you don’t Literally have to be in room but you Need to be somewhere where there’s you Have nothing to compete against in terms Of distractions I’m just going to move
This way so I have a little bit more Room to move here just so I can stay Within the perimeters of the camera and So I would have five start with his Control position so he’s mastered that I Have several pieces of food in my left Hand and when I teach him so if he’s Never done this before I would hold the Food oops buddy Sit near as my boy I’m going to hold the Food right on his nose and every couple Steps that I take I’m going to reward Them at my side now I want you to watch My leash when I do this so I’m going to Lure him on my side yes good boy I might Lure him to turn around me good boy now Look at my leash okay my leash is nice And loose I might stop and lure him into A sit at my side yes good boy I’m just Going to turn to the camera so you guys Can see yes good man and I might just Start off by doing some small circles I Might go up and down my hallway I’m Going to move fairly briskly but a lot Of the focus for the dog in the early Stages is going to be putting the food Right on the nose and then from there I Can start to train him to have the food From the nose up to my side there’s a Whole bunch of progressions we’re going To make that I’m not going to bother Going over tonight but if you’re Starting this is step one let’s talk a Little bit about leash management
Specifically what should people do with Their leash how you know what what is it What happens in their hand what happens When the dog you know you’re placing the Dog like little things like that you Want to go over that again Jumping up and getting their legs yep You likely have too much leash yeah so If you have too much leash out your Dog’s uh jumping up and their legs are Getting caught it probably means you Have too much leash out so you need to Gather a little bit more leash in your Uh in your hands the other thing you can Do if you’re getting a lot of jumping is Make sure that if you do have food Number one make sure you’re using Rewards at this stage to help the dog Learn but if I’m doing this look at that If I’m holding it up even a dog who Knows how to walk He’s just jumping up for the food so I Need to be careful I’m not doing that When I reward him I’m going to reward Down at his head level yes good boy yes And I’m gonna reward while those four Paws are on the floor now you can see my Leash is still loose while I do that I Could also use my hand to lower him with The leash as well but if you’ve not Really done a lot of building value at Your left hand side we don’t want to be Using any type of leash Corrections with The dogs when they’re when we’re first
Starting out everything needs to be Fully positive reinforcement and so I Need to make sure that I’m using high Value reward less distractions and I Need to be holding my hand in a way that I’m not encouraging my dog to jump up For the food good choice five yes good For you now why didn’t five jump up for The food there because I don’t feed him There he says that’s cool mom but you Always feed me here so I start to teach Him this is the money spot this is where It’s most valuable to be because that is Where the reward comes and just the last Little bit rewarding at your side is Really important you never saw me reward Him in front you didn’t see me reach Back and reward him here whenever he got His treat he was always right in this Position at my left hand side and that Starts to teach him that this is where The rewards come and if I’m consistent With that he’ll learn to migrate towards That area on a really common basis okay Bye-bye good anything else Sadie great Some really good questions here in the Chat um I I think um We talked a little bit I I know a lot of People are hey buddy uh a lot of people Are probably uh past that point and you Know foundational stuff if not if let me Know uh thumbs up uh yes in the chat you Know are is your puppy at that Foundational learning stage or are you
Uh you know what are you struggling with Are you struggling with pulling are you Struggling with the dog that’s lagging Behind yeah if you struggle with pulling Did you do all of that and how long did You do it for because I think sometimes People are like oh well I’m past that Point but they didn’t actually 100 they Didn’t do the foundation that we’re Talking about like we we take weeks to Work on that Um and sometimes what happens when the Dogs are doing not a great job it’s Really because they have a poor Foundation and if you go back and play Around with some of that stuff the dog Starts to go hmm I like this walking Stuff this is pretty cool okay this is Pretty fun to do yeah to your point uh It doesn’t matter what the dog’s age is No if you have a dog who just won’t my The first dog training I did like family Obedience training was with a Two-year-old dog we might have to switch Treats for him I’m not sure why um just Because it would be so loud on them With an older dog and I applied the Exact same steps as I would with a Four-month-old dog exactly the same Because it’s about the level of Understanding it’s about the stage of Learning that they’re in if I’m learning A new language I go to a new country and I learn a new language you know I can’t
Just it doesn’t matter how old I am I Walk in it’s a brand new language to me We need to start at the foundation Pieces so think about that with your dog You know what is your expectation and Have they have you done some rehearsal Of that really beginner stuff like that Is like you know where you get started You also need to get started with that Older dog doesn’t matter what their age Is the other thing well a couple things Little dogs I saw a couple people asking Questions about Um yeah I know what it’s like to train That’s right we have a toy poodle hippie Shake we have a video specifically on The channel that talks about Um Some of some of the training methods That you can use for that those small Breeds it was with instructor Shannon Anyway one of the tips that she talks About in that video is that we’ll use a Wood wooden spoon with something like a Peanut butter or something that your dog Loves but it’s got to be like I also Really like using like an extendable a Back scratcher yeah if you if you’re you Know you also you have mobility issues It’s great to have an extra a back Scratcher as well yeah that’s right just In case your back gets it that’s right You can stop and have a little itch Absolutely train your dog so you know
Keep that in mind for those of you who Have those little teeny tiny dogs it’s Best if you’re able to bend over and Reward them you might have better timing But there maybe there comes a time when You have to use something that’s a Little bit a bit of an extension of your Hand that can be really helpful a couple Uh super chats came in uh so we think we Answered christiana’s question Yep uh let’s see from peonies please Uh 12 week old standard poodle and puppy Essential student how to balance Training heal uh with me uh at HV treat On the nose high volume yeah with Allowing her to sniff and explore I Suspect she’s avoiding when she suddenly Stops following the treat I love this Question it’s such a good question and So many people say like well I don’t Want my dog to be a robot and just being On my side they want to explore I agree And that’s why we have a couple Different styles of walking yeah let’s Talk about the balance yeah so um how to Balance the heel uh with me high value Street on the nose so uh first of all it What the words that you use is is really Going to be up to you but just so that You know Um because it sounds like you’re one of Our students which is awesome we have Um one command that we use for our dogs Uh to work on the more traditional style
Of heel where the dog is walking right At our left hand side and we do have a Higher expectation from our dog in those Situations where they’re not allowed to Sniff and explore they need to kind of Pay attention stay close to us we would Use that in busy places to pass people On the street where we really want them A bit more engaged for us using the word With me it gives our dog a little bit More freedom Um around us where they do not have to Hold heel position anymore but they must Keep their leash loose so if I was going To take five for a really long walk I would typically walk him most of the Time with his with me command so he Could be a little bit in front of me he Could be to the side he could sniff a Little bit Um you know he could kind of just be a Dog but while that happens he’s not Allowed to pull me and he’s also not Allowed to do other obnoxious things He’s not allowed to steal things off the Sidewalk and those types of things he Has to be you know paying attention but I don’t expect him to heal beside me and Stare at my face but as I get close to a Distraction I will ask him to get in and To walk nice and close to my side and Then once we’re past I might allow him To have a little bit more freedom so um It sounds like you just need to and
Again you have a dog that’s only 12 Weeks old so at this it said 12 weeks Right I think I got rid of the question Uh yeah I’m pretty sure it was 12 weeks Um anyways you have a dog that’s only 12 Weeks old so right now what you should Be doing is working on just building Value for your puppy walking nice and Close to your side with whatever control Word that you’re going to use and I Would do this with a 12 be I would like When I did that with him we were only in The house with very little distractions No we didn’t go on any walks at that age At all uh and then you’re gonna also Practice on moving around with your dog And having them follow you on a loose Leash as well Um and you might choose a different Command uh for that just to build value And since you’re a puppy essential Student uh we actually do have some Great uh videos on that movement Um in your resource library in your Class online classroom so um if you’re Not really sure where to find that ask One of the instructors and we can direct It to you because I think that visual Will be awesome for you to show you the Steps Mary H drop in a Super Chat Welcome back to the train stationary Thanks Mary Lavonte levancy 81 what do You like that What do you think of that good boy
Pretty cool dude yeah crunch Um okay so talking about some of these Uh the the tools you’re using we’ve Talked about food uh and it’s value why It’s so important the high value treat As we talked about in our last question Something that a lot of people Underestimate is the use of their voice How they can use their voice in their Training now we like to use our voice Kale talked a little bit about how you Use uh a lot of food at the beginning And then we start to wean off on food Well there are a few things that we Start to add into the leash walking Training that allow us to bridge between The rewards so that we don’t have to do The donkey and carrot thing uh for you Know much longer so using your voice in Between those treats and it doesn’t have To be I mean what you don’t want to be Doing is just blabbering on the whole Time and you feel like a crazy person When you’re walking around you know in Your uh your town or whatever walking Down the street Um but you do want to use it’s like an Engaging upbeat voice as you move around With your dog you’re going to be amazed And I always find our male students are The worst at this but as soon as you Give them this information guys for Whatever reason don’t feel like I don’t Know they’re less likely to be like good
Boy way to go buddy look good let’s go All right come on that with me whatever But it’s it helps and once the once the Guys hear this any guys in the live Stream tonight believe me it makes a big Difference and it’s going to get you Away from uh constantly rewarding the Food it’s going to start to allow you to Distance those the time between rewards Along with using your voice it and again It doesn’t have it’s not forever we’re Actually using it early so that we build Tons of value and attention remember We’re competing with everything else out In the world so if you’re using your Voice and praising your dog when they’re In the right position then they’re going To be connected with you The other thing we start to add is the Right pace people struggle with this Let’s talk about Pace in your walking Training yeah how people struggle like In training classes because they’re Thinking about all these different Things yeah it’s so important to know That there’s other things that you can Use besides the food the food is so Helpful in the early stages but um Things like using your voice like Ken Mentioned and also the pace in which you Up five quiet good boy Um the pace in which you walk is also Really important because what we’re Trying to do is keep ourselves
Interesting keep ourselves worth Engaging with with our dogs in the early Stages of training and sometimes what Happens is when we’re walking slowly the Dogs have a lot of time to check out the Distractions and to look around and to Um you know do different things and if You sort of walk like you’re late for Something or you really pick up your Pace it also sends a good message to Your dog that you’re confident about What you’re doing and you know where You’re going and a lot of dogs will say Whoo you you look like you know what You’re doing I better I better pay Attention I better hustle with you Um so picking up your pace and walking Briskly is really really important and We find it makes a massive difference Five quiet I think it’s hard for him to Um work and then go in a crazy he will Settle just give him a second quiet With puppies this is he’s never really Been a demo dog before and it’s it’s Never in the studio no I think this is Probably good for you guys to see he’s Not a robot he’s learning but when I Take him out and I train him now he’s Like hey Mom I was not only a two minute Training session what happened so he Just needs to learn and figure it out Good boy now he can Praise Him for being Quiet Um anyways back to the PACE thing when
Um we have students that have a whole Bunch of things to think about they end Up walking really slowly because they’re Thinking about a lot of things and then You see the dogs get a little bit Disengaged because there’s just not very Interesting so uh walking quickly Briskly using a lot of happy tone and Voice let’s go let’s go this you know Whatever you say you guys if you watch Our videos you know how loud I am Um never uh but it really truly makes a Big difference and what’s nice about That if you don’t happen to have food on You you still can walk quickly you still Can use your voice and your dog can get The same consistent information Absolutely you know that that pace makes A big difference that reminds me of Something I see a lot lot of people that Struggle with you know their uh great Walking in position and then they’ll Drop a treat yeah or and then the dog Will see a little flower alongside the Sidewalk and the dog will slow down so The person slows yeah and they just let The dog check it out that’s right so When you pick a pace stick with it yeah Uh you know if your if your treat falls Down or you know it falls out of your Hand even when you’re about to reward Your dog the floors lava it is gone the Last thing we want to be doing is Rewarding our dog from the ground or you
Know stopping on those walks and this is Where having two styles of walking which We talk about yeah we have a couple of Videos about here on on YouTube I’m Pretty sure Um that are just teach the dog not to Pull on leash they don’t have to be in At your side but they just can’t pull Actually uh it’s something like um teach Your dog not to pull on the leash ever I Think we shot it with a Labrador Retriever years ago and um really a Valuable video honestly I would say that skill that we teach in Our classes the least respect uh is Probably one of my most used skills yeah Because I don’t really I don’t really Need my dog to walk in at my side you Have to left in that old you know formal Obedience position but I they can’t pull On the leaves yeah because I’m carrying You know recycling bins or you know I’ve Got you know a coffee or there’s some Reason that I don’t want my dog to pull And if they have a strong understanding Not to pull on the leash and it doesn’t Matter where they are man that’s a Functional skill and you can go anywhere With your dog yet in that situation it Allows me to walk four sometimes five Dogs at a time yeah because they all Have good least respect and they’re not All going to fit at my left hand side And one totally so they walk sort of in
Front and around Um but because they know not to pull you Know it’s it’s easy to move around with Them Uh talking about some oh you know what Let’s first before we go on we talked at The uh at the opening that you’re Focused on uh you’re going for wins You’re not necessarily going for walks The amount of time that you spend Walking training is important because if You plan to go out for a 30 minute okay You know it’s uh whatever time it is Where you are 6 30 right now 6 30 right Now I’m gonna go out for a half hour Walking training session that’s likely Too long for your dog maybe not but it’s Likely too long so I want you to be Thinking about okay we have 30 minutes To train uh I’m gonna train some walking Uh and you know get some success get Some wins along the way and then we’re Going to change it up a little bit Because just like you your dog gets Bored of some of these things maybe they Get Fuller they’re just not interested Maybe they get to a point where the Distractions are just way too Interesting now so make sure you’re Focusing on these training sessions that Are short and sweet and Successful you want to finish on a high Note and if you start to see your dog Start to waver a little bit you want to
You know maybe you make a turn and you Head back the other direction get a Little win and then you break it off but You always want to end on a win that’s Also really important if you feel like Oh boy you know the train has come off The tracks now then maybe you finish With a sitting at your side or maybe you Do a nice sit finish maybe you put a Treat on your dog’s nose you take a Couple of last couple steps and then Lure them into a Sit then you break it Off but think about the time the amount Of time you’re spending and maybe the Time of day maybe in your neighborhood It’s busy between eight and nine as all The kids go to school in the morning and Whatever time kids come home three to Three or four or whatever in the Afternoon maybe your walks with your new DOT your your dog in training maybe they Need to happen between seven and eight At night or maybe if you know you get Home from work you uh you know wait an Hour until the you know the place the The environment calms down a little bit There’s a several layers to time that You can think about when it comes to Your walking training the duration and The time of day can make a really big Difference that sort of leads sort of Into one’s question okay what happens if A busy street is all you have To work with Okay yeah one thank you for
The Super Chat Uh what happens if a busy street is all You have to work with while walking your Dog Yep this can be really challenging If that’s your only option Um you’re gonna need to do a lot of Training Um in your house while there’s no Distractions and then you’re also going To have to work on bringing distractions Into your house to to initially start Your proofing things so whether that’s Scattering some of your dog’s favorite Toys around whether that’s having people Create distractions what you can you Know get good at teaching leave it and Turning like we’ve mentioned before Um and then it might need to be in the Early stages that when you go outside Rather than going for a walk you’re Gonna go outside and you’re just gonna Work on the dog sitting beside you on a Loose leash to begin with and don’t Worry about the walking part just worry About the dog learning to engage with You around distractions and then from There you could move on to the walking Once your dog is ready but it needs to Be baby steps I think the thing is the People that don’t know dogs don’t don’t Uh uh recognize is that that wind that Sit in control is a huge win for your Walking training but most people think Like well I’m not moving I’m not walking
There there’s no Advantage here Very cute there’s no Advantage here but That is a big win especially if you have A dog who loves to pull because you’re Showing them it’s worth checking in with Me and then as kale showed uh Juan You’re gonna start with that donkey Carrot stuff no food right on the nose And maybe it’s just for five or ten Steps and then you break it off with an Okay and you restart things but don’t Underestimate the value of that kind of Attention because that will allow you Very quickly to start moving into more Challenging situations and getting more Distance on your walks yeah Kale talked about the Gentle Leader and It is something I mean we’re not Sponsored by Gentle Leader uh but Especially with the amount of dogs I Think he needs to go out or yeah Um with the amount of dogs that we get To see each week we know that sometimes I know someone had mentioned in here That they had a 70 pound K I mentioned It’s a 70 pound Malamute and we actually Had a beautiful Malamute in classes in Our one of our recent sessions maybe Just a couple sessions ago big great big Strong dog What a huge Advantage with having head Control if you have a dog who loves to Pull and specifically The Gentle Leader Is that those big strong dogs it doesn’t
Allow them to lean in like a collar Especially like a harness or even like The halty wood it uses a different uh Mechanics to sort of draw the dog’s head Down and in We Believe In The Gentle Leader so Strongly that we actually have them make A special one just for us it has like Metal buckles on it so that it you know It can’t slip like the plastic ones do But I will tell you especially when as a Student when I was at McCann dogs A Gentle Leader changed everything for me Because it didn’t allow me to like hang Out in that tension Zone it and you know Because it’s Clips underneath the dog’s Snout and it turns their head so when They start to pull it turns their head Back to war you toward you and then you Can sort of guide them back into your Side having head control is a is a is a A huge advantage and having head control Is something like a generator it’s Literally like having power steering for Those big strong dogs or for those dogs Who were so insistent and they want to Pull can make a huge difference in in a Side note we took beeline out her first Experience in the big city uh we put her On a Gentle Leader because it has this Calming effect on a lot of dogs and it Sort of like centered her a little bit Oh it helped her so much she’s not the Most confident dog and sometimes she can
Be a little bit unsure in brand new Situations or if like new lots of new People are around and I didn’t want to Be putting her in that type of situation And then you know then telling her not To pull and getting after her I wanted It to be a really positive experience Um so we set out with the Gentle Leader On so she could just be calm and not Pull and um it was just a really Wonderful experience for her to go out And you know gain some confidence by Having a lot of like really positive Things happen so it was great this is The I didn’t get to this point Leanne You knocked into the park but then they Get dependent on it and don’t do well on A leash without a gentleman in fact no This is why we love the Gentle Leader so Much because it’s built to train off of It in fact do we have a gentle eater Down here um so so the jet yeah the Gentle Leader is um for anybody who Doesn’t know Um it’s like a it’s a flat awful caller But it’s also got this little ring at The bottom that has a nose loop on it And what I love about the Gentle Leader Is that for exercise when it starts Going really well or for exercises where Your dog is really good at maybe it’s a Stay or doesn’t really matter what the Exercise is for those exercises You just slip the nose Loop off and clip
Rather than being attached to the bottom Clip Woodhead but well yeah So this is one of our puppy ones so it Was slipping this off so this is like The and this isn’t one of ours this is Like a plastic clip ones but Instead of having the nose Loop you know It’s the it’s a flat Buckle collar With a nose loop on it so as soon as the Dog gets really good at something you Can slip this down And double clip it onto the collar here So now it’s just a flat Buckle collar And then you get into a situation where The uh where the your dog’s like not Struggling but they’re like working Again and they’re not as successful you Just literally unclip it from the flat Buckle collar slip the nose loop back on That’s what we love about the Gentle Leader because you can go back and forth And back and forth and like have the Nose loop on slip it off because no Matter what piece of equipment we’re Using we don’t want to become dependent On it one reason we don’t use harnesses You know you don’t give the dog good Information it don’t have great control But we also want to be we want the dog To feel like it’s the illusion of choice We want them to feel like they can Choose to leave but we we reward them For staying and one thing that we’re
Trying to do with the Gentle Leader is We’re trying to break through so that we Can get a few great weeks or a few great Months of good walking yeah because it’s Really no good if you’re going week After week and month after month after Month constantly trying to correct your Dog for pulling and it’s just basically You’re giving the dog negative Reinforcement that is not good dog Trainer that’s not that’s not how we Believe in dog training we want the dog To be right most of the time so Sometimes it takes you know a um a Change of um a change of routine or Change of equipment to get the dog uh on The right track um once again Um if you want to know more about the General leader we actually have um Several videos three four videos all About how to fit it how to get your dog To like it if they don’t like it because Lots of people say well I don’t want to Use it my dog doesn’t like it Um yeah that’s often the dogs that need It the most yeah are the dogs that like Put up a fuss when you first Put A Gentle Leader on so that’s a really good To think about and and for who is it uh Excuse me Leanne that had mentioned that Yeah Leanne so Leanne uh we’re very Specifically talking about the Gentle Leader product uh we’ve used the as it Used the others we’ve seen the others uh
Gentle leaders they’re just not as good Yeah it’s just not they just don’t it Generally is the way to go Um moving on talking about being Proactive and consistent so It’s so important sometimes people will Say well my dog walks great on the first Half of the walk but or when we go to The park but then we start walking home And it’s an absolute nightmare or vice Versa oh the dog pulls constantly try When we’re getting to going to the park But coming home it’s amazing so you need To be really consistent about your Expectations for your dog so you’re Gonna just cut out that part of the Walking so uh for example if it’s about Going to park this is something that I Did this is what makes me like Clues me In so much I used to love going for Walks at from home I’d walk to the park Uh with Deegan and she’d pull the whole Way there because when we’d get there I’d throw a ball or I’d throw you know Like a frisbee or do something I’m gonna Have something wild and crazy And she pulled me the whole way there And then she’d walk right on the way Home and I remember talking to my Instructors in class and actually the Instructor Robbie who see in the chat Tonight it might have been her someone Had mentioned well you know you need to Be consistent you know you can’t let her
Pull sometimes and then insist on nice Walking other times so uh essentially What had to be done was either I I Wasn’t going for walks to the park Anymore because I didn’t have control up Until that point I would drive to the Park and then we’d do our play session Whatever I practice walking there and Then I’d drive home or you know we’d Practice walking training elsewhere but I didn’t let her repeat and rehearse the Bad stuff Because you don’t want your dog thinking That well sometimes it’s okay sometimes I don’t have to listen to my name Sometimes I don’t have to be walking at His or her side yeah it’s really Important consistency is important Consistency is really important because We also see this happen with our Students yeah they come to class and Their dogs you know start out walking Very poorly when they first begin then They get some great information they get Some consistent you know training and Then the dogs stop pulling in class and Then they say well my dog sometimes Pulls at home but he doesn’t pull in Class how come they do one thing one Place and another thing another place Right yeah it literally comes down to Consistency because in class if you know If students aren’t addressing it we’re Able to say hey this is what you need to
Do and if you’re not doing those same Steps at home then the dog starts to Learn okay well there’s two different Sets of rules one when I’m in class one When I’m walking here one when I’m Walking there Um and you you don’t have that Consistent picture no matter where you Are What as we get a little bit as you get a Little bit deeper into the training I’m Thinking about how being What being proactive when you’re leash Walking training what what does that Even mean what does it look like You’re gonna start to notice that you’re I would actually be interested to see if They answers in the chat what would it How could they be proactive in their Walking so what could you guys do Tomorrow that would help you be Proactive in preventing leash pulling Do [Music] Okay I don’t think luckily uh the dog Training is our specialty for the YouTube because we’d never be on here as Uh beatbox no I actually thought your Beatboxing was pretty good there oh Thanks yeah I’ve been practicing I can’t Do that at all I can talk inside my Mouth that’s about it oh I love this First one who’s that Sophia
What is this Have a start stop goal in mind before You start wow look at that I love it you Know what Sophia just turned two yeah This is really good Maybe you’ve watched some of our videos Maybe came up with that on your own Either way everybody knows now it’s Great yep Um okay so this is really good we There’s some really good not walking Outside pay attention to time that I Walk her add distance to distractions Sue I love that we have this thing that We do in our uh classes or in our Trainings and we call it the triple D It’s duration Distance distraction so those three d’s Are all things that you can control in Order to create more success and so if The distractions are tough Create more distance from that Distractions or use lower distractions Or with durations don’t go for a 45 Minute walk go for five minutes and then You know build up time so that’s a Really good one really really good one a Couple of things here so check my Pace It’s great yeah check your pace Um uh Team the cotton home team talks About changing directions if your dog Starts to pull yeah I love it so before You guys get to that before you get to The point where your dog starts to pull
What can you do to be proactive even Before the pulling you’re absolutely Right if you get to a point where you’re Like oh lost control changing directions Uh is good I don’t like walking Backwards I would literally do a 180 Degree turn because that’s going to Force the dog to you know pick up the Pace a little bit and then once they’re Back in position I can reward them but It keeps it really clear listen buddy I Expect you’re right here this is where All the good stuff happens but before You do that I see some people mentioning Like some distractions yeah it’s good There’s great stuff here Um also before we get too far I want to Welcome Kath the Raymond welcome to the Hard dog supporters Um and lollipop kid new subscriber oh Nice welcome before you Before you point before your dog starts To pull and whether it’s someone walking Down the street or maybe it’s like I Don’t know maybe it’s when you get to The edge of the park whatever the thing Is what can you do to uh be more Interesting to your dog than that thing Maybe that’s when you use your voice Maybe as someone’s walking I don’t know How to illustrate this but some of these Walking this is terrible walking down The street over here and you’re coming Up and they’re walking the other way
Maybe at that you know uh 50 foot Mark Or 30 meter Mark maybe that’s when you Start connecting with your dog using Your voice and you reinforce them for That you want to Especially when you’re training and Especially when you’re struggling you Want to do your best to engage your dog Before they choose to leave you and for Some people maybe that’s stopping but It’s a lot more advantageous if you can Keep moving and reward that walking that Choice to remain focused on you maybe It’s food maybe you’re proceeding with Some food reward maybe you’re using your Voice but you’re always always going to Reward those great choices and make a Big deal of it you know good you know I Would be really engaged if I had a dog Who like would constantly pull when we Get to the corner are always you know Start leading out to go across the Street if people were walking on the Other side before I get to the I’m going To be mindful and aware okay there’s a Person coming what’s my game plan that’s Where Sophia had mentioned it’s starting To stop okay I’m gonna plan to you know Maybe work 150 feet today or I’m gonna Do this thing But have a plan for when those Distractions come up and try to precede Those things with voice maybe it’s food Reward maybe it’s creating distance
Increasing speed maybe it’s a turn Whatever that thing is do your best to Not get into the situation where you Have to redirect Um I want to address one thing um Sweetness 1624 says does breed matter With leash walking I have a beagle and Leash walking just looks differently Simply because he needs to smell Um so this is a good comment to come up Because I think it’s a good thing to Talk about Um breeds do not matter in any type of Training Um in terms of what your expectation of Them should be Um you know we have a lot of Border Collies and they like to herd and grip And and do those types of things you Know and they are not allowed to attack The vacuum despite wanting to do that Initially when they’re younger or you Know run up behind and nip kids that are Running or you know those types of Things Um we don’t allow those things to happen And so if you have um a sniffy type read Like hound dog Um they don’t need to smell they want to Smell yeah those are two different Things right um and if I can teach my Dog that it’s more valuable to look up To me for rewards instead of just Letting them smell the floor and get
Their own rewards without moving with me I I can change the narrative so Um there are some dogs that have more Sort of habits or natural tendencies That you need to sort of work with you Know Huskies for example they tend to Pull a lot initially because they’re They’re bred to do so yeah their bodies Are built yeah and that doesn’t mean no I I we have all kinds of huskies that Come to class that learn to walk Beautifully on a leash because of the Information they’re getting from the Handler so Um never use your dog’s breed as an Excuse for learning something you as Their trainer as their teacher as the Owner that loves them dearly needs to Figure out how to motivate that Particular dog so that the end goal is The same they all can learn how to do Wonderful things sometimes you have to Do things a little bit differently Depending on the dog sometimes it’s not Even breed dependent there’s sometimes That we’ll have a class and there’s Three Golden’s and the thing that I tell This person with this golden is totally Different than what I tell that person With that golden because the dog’s Personalities are different or whatever It might be and that’s why it’s so Important to learn about training so no Using breeds as excuses doesn’t matter
Yeah you train the dog I love it I love It that’s a huge part of the reason for This YouTube channel is to like uh have You set Higher Goals for your dog have You set Higher Goals for your Relationship and your abilities yeah and That is something because that’s Something that was so impressive to me Is uh all of the dogs coming through the Training facility that you’d see like Let’s say five beagles over the course Of a day in the different classes and Varying degrees of learning but at the End of the day there’s greatness in each And every one of them and you don’t have To use breed as an excuse I love that With that said we’d love for you to join Us at the 40th anniversary 14th to 16th October 14th will be an Evening event uh we’re doing a live uh Audience of um praying station we’re Also doing a really cool panel interview Of my parents Deb and Marty McCann and Uh we have some awesome questions for Them to ask them about and know how the Business came to be things that they’ve Learned over the years and really dive Deep they’re not on camera very much so You guys always don’t get to see get the Value and and to benefit from the Knowledge that they have I’ve grown up With it I sat at dinner table since the Very beginning of my time and I’ve just Learned heard everything there is to
