[Applause] And a super sticker Super chat and a super sticker before we Even get started and i want to thank you Guys for joining us here in the train Station It’s been a long time since we’ve heard That tooth i know i’ve been holding my Tooth for nearly a month i know someone Now that’s not good someone asked me That or i mentioned that it has been a Month since we did a train station um i Want to thank lavonche levansi lavonche 81 and sue k we’re going to get i Appreciate the super sticker um From levante ovonsi uh and sue k we’re Going to get to your question in just a Minute uh but we want to Catching up today yeah so what were we Up to yeah well we had a really busy Month last month it was um August seems like a long time ago now Even though it really wasn’t uh was Ken’s birthday uh we were celebrating Some success with our youtube channel so We uh went on a whim a very fast trip to New york city it’s a city that we both Love particularly ken yeah uh and then Uh very shortly after that i went out to New brunswick uh canada for the uh National agility championships and the Um Team canada tryouts for the year 2023 And
We were pretty darn successful she how Successful well she Won seven of the ten classes and we made The team for next year so we’re going to Netherlands again which is kind of cool You can tell kale is like a devout dog Trainer and um terribly humble because You know you say things like she which Beeline she talked about beeline yeah She won the court the classes but uh It’s all about teamwork we did do it Together yeah yeah absolutely teamwork Makes the dream work as they say Absolutely that’s a nice rhyme we should Get a shirt or something that is yes it Is yeah today we’re going to be lots of Fun today we’re going to be talking About answering your puppy training Questions we have a few points that we’d Like to talk about in terms of your Puppy training but If this is your first time here my Name’s ken steepe this is kale mccann We’re professional dog trainers at Mccann dogs and at mccann dogs uh every Single week we’re publishing videos on The youtube channel we’re helping nearly 500 dogs owners in our training facility And we’re helping nearly a thousand People with our online programs and uh We like to take every second thursday Out just for you just to hang out here In the train station and today’s no Different so we’re going to help you
With your puppy training questions it’s Our puppy training q a as i mentioned I’m ken steepe i’m cam mccann welcome Back to mccann dogs So uh i see some people that have Mentioned that they uh They missed the train station i Appreciate that yeah glad you’re here With us you must have a puppy or a dog In training if you have a puppy right Now and you’re working on stuff if You’re just a dog lover dog owner and You’re like interested in learning more About puppy training let us know in the Chat it’s nice to get a sense of um who The audience is you know who you at home Who you are and get an idea of like how We’re going to kind of shape this uh Train station show for you um so let us Know just drop it in the chat You’re going to see it while you have The chat open while you’re there you’re Going to see some names that are in blue And uh if their names in blue they’re Part of the mccann dogs crew you’re Going to see instructor aaron instructor Robbie dan the moderator man instructor Alexis And uh That’s all the instructors i see in There right now but those guys are uh Mccann dog’s crew and they’ll be Answering some of your training Questions dan lots of links is a
Moderator extraordinaire he’s gonna be Dropping links and he’s a link dropper And helping us out on this end uh with The with the train station um Alexis dropping the 699 super chat that Didn’t take long we’ve got a couple Questions on deck but before we get to Alexis’s question just let me grab that So we don’t lose it Um we’re just uh almost out of the woods On the puppy experience let’s talk a Little bit about five yeah I mean we get to see lots and lots of Puppy owners every week but um we all Often have a puppy in the house let’s be Honest we do often have a puppy in the House but hopefully that’s not going to Be the case for the next little bit We’re we’re going to take a little break On Accumulating dogs But our youngest is he just turned nine Months old which is crazy because i Remember putting the first couple videos Of him out when we literally just Brought him home uh when we were just Deciding whether we were gonna get him Or the other puppy so um It’s really quite amazing what can Happen in nine months of training Because he is definitely moving out of That um You know frustrating and crazy puppy Stage and he’s starting to turn into a
Little dog that has you know has some Skills and has some manners and it’s Really nice when that starts to happen And it’s something that i think we all Look forward to even though the puppy Stage is great they’re cute they’re Little they’re squishy they’re adorable We love them so much we want them to Stay little and adorable forever but i Gotta say It’s really nice when they start to get Trained When they start to get trained and they Just kind of have you know a bit of a Routine with your family and with your Lifestyle and they can kind of listen a Little bit better and they just become a Little bit less work which is awesome You can actually start to enjoy them Yeah I mean But those hours like the time you put in Is so valuable and not just you know Looking ten years down the road for like Your next six months of training the More foundation you give that puppy the Better information you give that puppy The more you don’t allow them to make The mistakes the common mistakes one of The reasons we have this channel is to Help you avoid some of those mistakes But if they don’t get to make those Mistakes they don’t learn that they’re Fun or that your shoes taste good or
That it’s a lot easier to just go pee in The living room than it is to go outside So you know the uh think about your Puppy training in that way like it’s a It’s an investment it’s a real Investment at the beginning but boy oh Boy is it worth it I want to know uh i’ve got some uh super Chats loaded up i see some of our uh Members if you want to become a heart Dog supporter there should be a link in The description On desktop at least and i see uh Crystal’s here uh asked a question beth Is here ask the question um so we’ve got A couple and i’m trying to grab those as We zip along but If this is your first train station you Might hear us use some unusual say some Silly things but uh if this is old hat For you never if this is you know if You’ve been here you’ve been on the Train before you understand how this Train rides i didn’t even know what sort Of medic rules maybe how we roll here on The train then you’ll know that one of My favorite parts is finding out where You’re joining us from uh you know uh It’s so interesting to me because we Have now we have students from all over The world but i love knowing where You’re joining us from for the train Station and we’ll get people from all Over the world and it’s so fascinating
I’ll sometimes go back in after the show And i’ll look up some of these places And i just find it so interesting so i Would love to know where you’re joining Us from drop it in the chat let us know You know maybe it’s your country maybe Put your town whatever i i enjoy that Part of things did you know that we have Students from all 50 states in the us Now i did know that yeah and did you Know that we’re from canada yeah i know We actually had a conversation about That the other day that people are Actually shocked that we’re in canada Yeah i know we so we just did an intake Of lesson one the first class for a new Session of grade one students last night And it’s a lot of fun meeting um people You know Because i remember being there Floridians tonight a lot of floridians Yeah um i remember being there i Remember being that student the great Thing about mccann dogs is our Instructors other than uh you know a Couple who grew up in uh as part of Mccann dogs were all students at one Time and i remember being there i Remember the you know how i was blown Away by the facility how i was shocked At some of the cool shows that they did With the dogs and it gave me like a Little bit of um Motivation to like work harder yeah yeah
Which was really fun so uh uh you know It’s cool to uh to meet those people and Maybe some of you guys are here tonight So i noticed people mentioned that they Were they came to training they didn’t Realize we were from we have a lot of Shocked people that we’re from canada Yes our in-person classes are in ontario Canada but we have online classes and Anybody in the world can can go into it So i see people from uh maryland jamaica Florida melbourne australia scotland uh From maine ontario canada long island New york indiana florida lots of Floridians you’re right michigan Yarmouth nova scotia beth joining us i Think beth you’ve been On train station before i recognize um Moody uh from lake benton minnesota That’s interesting nature coast florida I’m gonna look that up california Central mass concord uh missouri toledo London burlington not too far away nk uh Colorado illinois langley minnesota Australia el paso uh in the list goes on Alaska philippines northwest arkansas Very cool let’s see dublin ireland Thanks for joining us paula all the way From dublin timmons nice very cool aj Ally campbell becoming heart dog Supporters welcome ally Tonight ali okay let’s dive into the First question this is do a night uh From beth one of our heart dog
Supporters That says the biting is so bad with our 12 week old Cockapoo uh i keep trying things i’ve Seen in your videos but he keeps at it Makes it hard to enjoy our family it Gets hard for our family to enjoy him Okay this is really really important When it comes to puppy biting because It seems as though Uh and we we see this with students i See this a lot on youtube because they Get a lot less information but um It’s not just about the moment the Puppy’s biting yeah maybe we can talk a Little bit about that and setting up the Puppy to make better choices on top yeah For sure and and i do feel you there it Is hard to enjoy a puppy when you know They’re nipping and biting us but also Know that um that’s very normal behavior For for puppies to do a lot of puppies Will nip and bite when they first come Home when they’re trying to figure out Kind of where they fit in in the family Um but as ken said you know there are Definite ways that you can discipline Those behaviors and and fix them um but We’re reluctant to talk about that on Youtube because there are a couple Different ways to do it and it really Has so much to do with technique and Timing and um you know there’s things That are really important but what ken
Was saying is that what a lot of people Don’t realize is There’s so many things you can do to set Your puppy up to not even choose to bite In the first place and that’s really Where you want to put your focus we want To spend more time telling the puppy That they’re right and less time um Being upset with the puppy for nipping And biting so it could be simple things Like maybe you know a little bit more Supervision maybe a little bit more Exercise uh maybe having a leash or line On the puppy in the house rather than Just when you go for a walk or when you Go outside so that you do have better Control and you don’t have to have your Hands all over the puppy maybe don’t get Down on the floor and wrestle and and Egg the puppy on accidentally maybe Don’t have the puppy up on the couch or Up on the bed near your face where You’re kind of blurring the lines a Little bit as to how to who’s in charge So there’s a lot of management things That can be adapted a lot of times People put their puppies in a situation They don’t even realize it that it’s Just it it really makes it so easy for The puppies to nip and bite so um Anyways i know you want to see yeah no i I’m just it’s it’s so interesting Because we uh you know we have um the Our production studio is running all
Week and we’ll bring dogs in uh or People drop dogs off uh for us to do Like a training video or create content For and the one thing that we’ve Discovered especially uh Dan uh lots of links luton and i is that We have to make sure that our Instructors don’t get a chance to really Interact with the puppy until the moment The camera starts rolling because after A while your puppies just kind of Learned that that’s a fun way to engage Just bite and you know be playful and Silly and goofy but then we’ll hand off A dog a puppy like that or a dog or Whatever the situation is and um in a Moment the instructor will have just Made a couple different choices not Allowed the puppy to do that or allow The dog to do that and it seems like There’s no corrections no corrections no Corrections no corrections but they’ve Uh the the puppy now understands like Okay this isn’t a game uh this person Seems like a leader this person is going To give me good direction 100 This person makes me feel confident and I mean our all of our trainers just like They seem to know like you know you can Bring a lot up out in the puppy and like Sometimes some puppies need to be ramped Up a little bit to perform a thing a Skill or whatever or you know solve a Problem and other puppies you know it’s
Just a you know how you handle that you Know the we’re not like leaning over top Of a puppy like there’s all these little Things but what kale is talking about a Little bit there is like leadership Choices this puppy is uh thinks that You’re just the most fun thing in the World ever thinks yeah your family is The most fun thing in the world and That’s great but you probably also need To understand that it’s not okay to bite Anybody you know you um And you can fix this pretty quickly if You start making choices where the Puppy’s always got a line on you know The puppy if you can’t supervise them They’re in their crate so that you’re Super focused when you pop them out of Their crate and like they’re in and out All day long When they’re out of their crate you know That okay i’m going to take the puppy Out for a pee we’re going to come back In and then we’re going to work on Something we’re going to do something Together and that shift in the puppy’s Perspective makes a massive difference We occasionally talk to families with Kids we have to say like listen I Your kids are definitely going to get an Opportunity to like be best friends with The dog but right now you have a nipping And biting problem so you know don’t let
Your kids Cause kids don’t know they just want to Have fun with a puppy but if you have a Nipping and biting problem that’s not The time for everybody to be rolling Around on the ground because kids are so Much fun yeah puppy to play with yeah And um it’s just kind of making it more Challenging to yeah And to sum it up you know the training Really makes a difference and that’s why We encourage you to do a class to train Your dog because people don’t realize That teaching your puppy to sit down you Know shake a paw walk at your side call Listen to their name understand leave it All of those things they stop puppy Biting as well yeah you have to train Your puppy and then it Everything all works under the same you Know the same umbrella so that’s a huge Impact that’s a huge unlock and you know Maybe maybe it isn’t even puppy biting Maybe it’s some other puppy problem that You’ve got maybe you’re just generally Don’t know how to be a good leader Because you just don’t know how to make Choices or what to do and and you know Working with an instructor to learn how To make better choices we’ll help you With that and then those things for sure For sure yeah but i mean doing teaching A sit yeah doing restrained recalls Where the puppy sees like oh this
Person’s like lots of fun they’re Valuable i get tired but i’m doing some Work you have some expectations of that Puppy that can make a huge difference in The overall i’ll tell you something Really interesting this gets away from Poppies a little bit but as when i was Uh you know doing my apprenticeship uh Became a dog trainer in the first Couple of years maybe i was a trainer With mccann dogs one thing that i Noticed and i’d heard it said before but One thing that i noticed is the stay Is one of the most uh important Exercises to work on Not for the utility not for the fact That the dog remains in position but for The leadership opportunity that every New dog owner gets Follow through which we’re going to talk About in a little bit absolutely the Follow-through and the dog has to Maintain some sort of composure Self-control self-control it’s huge These are the little things and you’re Not going to work on a stay with your Little puppy confidence but Understanding understanding the Relationship between uh the state and an Adult dog hopefully will give you some Insight and choices that you can make With your little puppy now mm-hmm Uh alexis that was a very long answer But i’m sure lots of people i think it’s
People will have questions and intrigues About Hey puppy party um about uh about Nipping and biting so i think it was Good that we took some time to talk About that yeah From alexis hey thanks for the super Chat When our puppy goes out into the middle In the middle of the night for a Bathroom break uh we put him back in the Crate and he screams we are losing our Sanity Yeah and that can happen so uh let’s Talk a little bit about um well it’s Hard to know this these are the kinds of Questions that’s hard to coach you Through because without asking you Questions because there’s more questions For sure but let’s talk a little bit About what uh alexis shouldn’t do yeah i Would love to know the age of the puppy As well um i don’t know if you want to Just drop that in the chat alexis and We’ll try and keep an eye on it keep an Eye out for it because if they’re if They’re like a baby baby puppy like you Know under 12 weeks um i would give you A different answer than if your puppy’s Like 16 weeks um but Um In this situation it really depends on On how long this is this is happening Night after night after night um then
You need to start addressing the the Barking in the crate when we first have A very young puppy and you know we do Things like switch up their their Routine we go from inside to outside and Back to inside where it’s kind of Shaking up their routine a little bit And they wake all the way up because They’ve gone out to the bathroom it’s Not unreasonable for a really young Young puppy to not settle right away and In in those cases we sometimes would Just let them cry it out for a little Bit until they sort of settle but if You’re losing your sanity and that tells Me that this is probably happening a lot For a long time maybe for you know many Nights in a row and in which case you Need to start working on um You know addressing the the barking um You could use a quiet command you could Um we actually have a great video um On this i’m sure lots of links luton can Drop it Specifically Night and puppy training yeah and uh Barking and barking in the crate yes Video Um i would highly recommend watching That but essentially you’re going to um Interrupt the puppy’s uh barking by Saying quiet you could bang on the crate Or wiggle the crate around a little bit And when that happens a lot of puppies
Will sort of startle for a moment and You’ll get like just a moment of silence And that’s all you need yeah and that’s Your opportunity to say good quiet good Puppy that’s better what you don’t want To be doing is taking the puppy out or Making a big deal of it because Sometimes the puppies will start to Learn oh if i cry enough you’re going to Pay attention ton attention to me you’re Going to let me out um so if it’s Something that’s been happening for a While you need to start addressing uh Addressing the barking in that manner Yeah and i mean without going too deep Into it um is the only time that your Puppy’s in their crate at night yeah Because that’s a problem yeah you want To be using it throughout the day and You’ll notice you’re probably gets a lot More comfortable uh like in and out of That crate Moving around oh the other thing that Came to mind that you’ll notice in our Nighttime puppy training plan overnight Puppy training plan dan’s dropped it in The chat Is that if your puppy’s close If you’re probably Again depending on the age if your puppy Is close to you while you sleep as You’re working through this nighttime Crate training it allows you to Communicate with them a little bit like
Hey okay that’s enough you know if you Have to like knock on the crate or if You can just you know soothingly say Like okay you know whatever off to sleep Or whatever and then praise them when They are quiet because it’s really Important the amount of people that Leave a comment on our crate barking Videos that say like i can’t i’ve been I’ve tried everything and i tried this And it worked yeah it’s all about timing So check that out if you haven’t already Yep okay uh lots of super chats coming In uh next quest john Okay Uh crystal one of our heart dog Supporters how to get a four month old Chihuahua i think it’s to like their Leash To like a leash yeah sometimes smaller Breeds can be a little bit intimidated Uh by a leash at first i would Definitely make sure that you’re using Properly sized equipment for a dog that That small You could even start off by You know getting string or something That’s um you know a little heavier than String but something like light rope That you could use that’s going to be Very very light and you can even start By making it shorter so it’s not so long Dragging around with the puppy um my Guess is that this this question is
Related to the puppy being on leash with You holding it i would actually start Off by just letting your puppy drag a Leash around so don’t put it in your Hands so there’s no tension whatsoever We actually recommend having all puppies As soon as they come home the first day That they come home we have what we call A house line so we our house leash or a House line and we have sort of like a Four foot very lightweight Cheap leash that we attach to their Collar and they wear that every single Second that they are out of their crate With us and um what ends up happening is We end up being able to utilize it to Help train our dogs and to teach our Dogs but the dogs get very comfortable With that line on after it’s been on for A little while We’ll often cut the handle off or just Make sure that it’s not going to get Caught on anything however when the Puppy is out and they have their house Line on we are also highly supervising So i’m not just letting the line on and You know let my dog go do their own Thing i’m you know engaging with my Puppy and watching and following them And and making sure they’re making good Choices um but i think the dragging of The line will probably make a really big Difference for a dog of your size and Then you can progress to holding it did
You talk about leash being loose i i was I missed um Not really okay I think it’s fine um okay sue Okay we’re first super chat of the night Actually before we even started sue says My five-month-old pup attends obedience Class but is over excited and i worry About setting him up to fail pulling and Jumping how do i train through this Um I mean it depends it’s hard because we Don’t know what classes you’re going to Yeah yeah Um [Music] So depending on what you’re working on The classes i have no idea what classes You go to or what you do but i what i Can speak to is what we do in our Classes for situations like this so um We work on an exercise called uh Controlled sit at our side and this is Sorry to interrupt this is at the Foundation our life skills class yeah This is where we’re working yeah we Teach it in our life skills class um and We teach it as sort of like a Go-to spot where our dogs learn to sit With us on a loose leash and be calm and We start working on this the very first First week in class So that if our puppies start to get a Little bit overzealous we have a
Position that we can teach them to come And and be calm now in the early stages When your puppy doesn’t know what that Means they want to sit at your side for Two seconds before they want to be off Doing stuff and so it just you know we Have to work through with some Follow-through um by placing them back Gently at our side each time that they Get up putting slack in the leash that The dog has to make their own decision To remain at uh your side and we’re not Holding the dog back when we’re just Holding the dog back and holding on for Dear life and the leash is tight dogs Brains turn off because they don’t have To use any self-control because you’re Doing all the work so the idea behind This exercise is the dog learns to sit On a loose leech without any tension Without any correction um and that Exercise really helps you you know Control your dog around any type of Scenario it doesn’t even need to be Class it could be you know dropping your Kids off at school or you know the Amazon amazon guy walks up the driveway And your dog gets a little bit excited You can uh move your dog to this Position and teach them to to have a Better reaction so you’re replacing an Unwanted behavior with a behavior that’s More uh productive yeah and work on this In your living room work on this and
Yeah not in class No distractions start there because you Do need to show your dog that there’s Value here listen if you do this thing You get something whatever your reward System is um because if that’s the first Time you’re introducing that to your dog Uh it is challenging you know you can Imagine trying to do math at the fair uh You know for the first time and there’s So many things going on there’s so much You can’t focus so uh work build that Foundation away from those situations But when it comes to training time be Consistent yeah make sure that your dog Understands that listen you got to Remain there buddy you know until i Release you with my with however you Release uh you got to remain there but It’s going to make it worth it that’s Really really good advice Um Okay oh that was sue this is from karen Well uh my one-year-old minnie ozzy was Raised in a lab In a lab he has He has no fear of vacuum cleaners or Water hoses but is definitely afraid of People uh how can i ease his mind Some pre some pretty unique ones one Year old mini aussie uh so i guess the Dog you know wasn’t socialized Well Uh that’s a tough one uh going a whole
Year without Any socialization um Is really challenging for a dog um I’m gonna be perfectly honest with you i Think that you need to seek out a Professional behaviors in your area Because they need to learn about your Puppy’s um fear where it’s coming from Before you can give directions because There’s lots of different reasons Why a dog Would be worried it could it Literally could be just you know Not enough experience with the world but Are they sound sensitive is this Specific to people is it a certain type Of thing there’s all kinds of things That are going on and you also need to Learn about the dog’s temperament you Know when we work with dogs that are a Little bit worried or fearful and we’re Able to work um so we wouldn’t even help This type of thing like in an online Setting we would have to work with you One-on-one because we would want to be Able to read the dog’s temperament and Say in c with our own eyes that the dog Is comfortable okay we can move forward Or we need to go at this pace with this Dog so um that’s my recommendation to You if you know a a year old dog with a Lot of fear um of people in situations Like that you need to tread water very Slowly because you certainly don’t want
To push the dog into a situation where They’re uncomfortable but it needs to be Done with somebody who knows how to read Body language and knows how to set a Pace that is going to set your puppy up Or your dog up to um Be more comfortable yeah avoid these Situations for now yeah until you can Get someone to help you through it Because the things cale mentioned are Really important that’s one of the Reasons we actually don’t publish uh you Know aggression uh uh videos or so Individual yeah or uh like worried uh Much on worry dogs because it is so Unique to the dog so unique to the Situation but It’s important that i you understand the Trainer understands What that person is like too because That can make a big difference is their Timing good you know how confident are They uh there’s a lot happening yeah and Yeah and then that’s why it’s not that We don’t know how to fix those things It’s that as professional trainers who Do have a lot of knowledge it would not Be appropriate for us to say you should Do this with that dog when we’ve never Met it uh we want you to be successful And you need to you need to seek One-to-one help for something like that Because it’s pretty serious really yeah Uh from pete gulich uh i rescued a blood
Uh rescued a bloodhound hound mix that’s A year and a half year and a half old And i’ve had him for two weeks and every Time i walk him he barks non-stop any Suggestions yeah so again having a new Dog um and you’re rescuing the dog and The dog is um A year and a half old that’s that’s a Lot of time for a dog to learn Uh bad habits or rehearse certain things Um having the dog only for two weeks is Not a very long time so my Recommendation to you is probably going To be a shocking one and that is for now You need to stop walking the dog you Need to stop walking the dog and Allowing these situations to happen Until you have a little bit more Relationship and training underneath Your belt now you’re probably thinking Well what am i supposed to do with the Dog if i’m not walking the dog then so There’s actually lots of things that you Can do with a dog to build relationship Um we have a really great saying that we That we say to our students you know Taking your dog for a walk is very Different than teaching your dog to walk So you actually need to train your dog How to walk at your side how to listen To you around distractions how to stop And sit at your side how to leave things On your command how to have confidence In you as a leader all of those things
Need to be done before we’re actually Out walking our dogs around in the Neighborhood so we do a lot of training Just in the house in the backyard in the Driveway we bring distractions to our Familiar location before we start taking The show on the road um and especially When you’re dealing with a dog that is Very new to you it’s even more important That you take things slow And you start building a relationship i Might suggest that you take some time to Do some trick training you take some Time to teach some stationery skills Where your dog learns um that focusing And listening to you is a really good Thing that will start making the walking Part a little bit uh better i might Suggest um you know maybe seeing if your Dog likes toys maybe try to play a Little tug of war or a little fetch so You can get some of that energy out but Um i would i would put a halt on the the Walking for now until you have a little Bit more tools underneath your belt and Relationship because two weeks is really Not a lot of time to accomplish those Things we have a uh we have a video that Talks about focus outside and gives you Sort of five tips talks about speed and Direction and a bunch of things that Will be helpful for you um so that’s Something to get you started and you can Talk a little bit more about timing um
Two questions here from ron uh Eight months old can i use a choker Collar that’s important that we talk About Trainer for a service dog not start Until one year old combat that my Service dog died now we don’t encourage The use of things like choke callers Prong collars pinch collars and those Kinds of tools but we e-collars E-collars yeah because we know we can Get uh the same or better results with Tools that aren’t uh you know aversive With with tools like a Head collar specifically the gentle Leader they don’t we’re not you know Sponsored by them we don’t you know we We we’ve seen the tool work so many Times that for years for years yeah Thousands of dogs so many yeah i mean It’s a great store like the professional Animal behaviors association it’s a good Uh it’s quality but we literally got Them to make us specific ones for us Because we believed in it so much um the Great part about something like a head Collar Is you have complete control of the Dog’s head they can’t lean into it it Doesn’t hurt them uh as long as you you Know you’re using it appropriately on a Six-foot leash um But more importantly is the tool the Head collar gentle leader is built to
Train off of it the last thing i want is To have to put something on my dog to go For a walk you just don’t want that i Also My expectation our expectation of the Dogs is that i get the same response off Leash as on leash so as you’re training Away from some of these tools your dog Just starts to learn when you have good Technique Your dog just starts to learn that i Listen and you know i walk alongside Because uh not because it hurts but Because you’ve done the right things to Reward the behaviors you want and dog Learns like oh it’s this is valuable It’s worth me because it’s not a natural Thing not a natural thing for a dog to Walk at your side so you need to show Them why it’s of value but we don’t use Uh those Types of collars Uh the other reason why we uh Aside from the um The fact that they’re quite negative Towards the dog and we don’t feel that That’s necessary the other thing that’s Really important is that because it Deals on the premise of pain and Negativity whoever is Training the dog with those things needs To know what they’re doing they need to Have perfect timing they need to know How to engage the dog they need to know
How to praise at the right time they Need to have a reward at the right time They need to know how to correct at the Right time and when you have a person That’s inexperienced and doesn’t give The dog good information and then They’re using callers that are adversive It um it’s just not a good situation for The dog so it’s it’s much better to Learn a little bit more about the Training and there’s other options out There focus is training you yeah you Know and i think that’s really important You know all the videos that you’re Watching here on youtube they’re for you Yeah so uh we want you to be the best Trainer that you can be for your dog and Um little mistakes with those kinds of Tools they can make a massive Have a negative impact on your training So just stay away from them uh from lucy Lucy says my three-month-old lab puppy Is so food motivated that when treats Are around she won’t grab onto any toys Oh this is interesting because we’ve Worked through this with some dogs um uh Uh on dandy toys we actually worked Through this on a video i think uh So i’m having a hard time teaching drop It is there any alternatives to the Trade method Yeah so um The trade method is no good if the dog Has like insane value for one of the
Items and not for the other so this can Work both ways they can work for dogs That are crazy about toys and could care Less about food and then obviously for Your situation where the dogs are crazy About food and maybe not as interested In toys because the food’s there and They’re just so excited about that so um With a dog like this there’s Two routes i would do number one is i Would try to train the dog to do an out Or drop it without food i would only use A toy and then maybe a second toy um so You can use a toy get the dog tugging no Food around as a distraction you can Give your out or drop it command and Then one second later present the second Toy you can slap it on the ground or Wiggle it around and make it exciting While you hold the toy that’s in their Mouth very still and boring and then you Wiggle wiggle wiggle and a lot of Puppies will say ooh that one looks fun And they’ll release that toy and then Grab the new toy and then you can tug With this hand keep that still drop it Slap slap get it excited and then they Can so you can go back and forth toy to Toy to toy to toy um another thing that You could try is um introduce a type of Toy with your dog that actually can have Food inside it so we have a couple toys Like like this or you can get them lots Of different places but we have
Like a food pouch um that it’s a velcro Pouch Inside the tug toy you can put food Right inside it um it’s like fuzzy on The outside and exciting and then we Also have like a little round ball that You can put food right inside the center So that it just sort of elevates the Excitement of the toy because the dog Sort of associates with getting treats Um and so you can do things like put the Food inside tug with the puppy work your Outer drop it and then either trade for A treat or once you’ve practiced it a Couple times and they know you’ll open The toy to get the food out then they Start to release faster and anticipate In in in anticipation it’s really hard To say uh of getting the the reward out So i just might change where the reward Is What and i’m sure you guys see when We’re talking about um you know picking The value of the uh trade object uh how Important it is It’s so important that you focus on the Timing of this because if you bring out The other thing and the puppy wants that Other thing more Your training session’s in trouble at That point because you probably just Won’t pay attention to the first object Whatever you want them to take but i’ll Tell you it is really important it it’s
Really valuable for you to teach your Dog puppy to love toys To engage with toys it is an object that You can uh really amplify the Relationship your relationship with your Dog and i don’t i don’t mean Relationship in the fluffy way that i Love you and you know you love me i mean In in that like you know i understand What my puppy wants needs what their Skills are how i can help them that kind Of relationship and they’ll start to see Me as somebody who’s worth listening to At like the little puppy level every Time a puppy comes out of their crate Out to go pee into the house and then We’ll do something like play tug And you’ll start to see you know it’s so Funny you know as a student when i was a Student i remember sitting you know in The classroom and i remember looking at The instructors and actually instructor Robbie’s in there tonight was my head Instructor of my first grade one class Our life skills program And i remember thinking the way like her Dogs would just check in with her and At home right now do you think your dog Or your puppy is at a point where They’ll just even in a busy environment They’ll check in with you Let me know in in the in the chat Because i was Shocked that this her dogs would just
Look at her and she wouldn’t be even Looking at them she’d be talking to us And showing us something they’re just Waiting that’s they’re waiting to be Told something that’s right to do Something fun yeah and using a toy in Your training and having an interactive Uh toy that you can use as a reward for Training or a way to burn off puppy Energy because don’t we all want that You know when you have a wild and crazy Puppy wouldn’t you love to be able to Tire them out quickly but it’s always a Great way to do that and your dog starts To look to you for value because they’re Not out self rewarding they’re not out Finding other things that are more Interesting because that’s what the World has for them there’s all sorts of Other things that are way more Interesting than you are at this point So why not Hack the system give your puppy Something to be focused on that can only Be fun when you’re there that’s the Value of these interactive toys so um You know we we love them they’re it’s a Great train you’ll see in lots of our Puppy videos even like the first day Home puppy videos we’re playing already Playing puppy yeah yeah so um yeah being Able of teaching when five was a really Young puppy playing tug and teaching him To fetch was one of my high priorities
And what i wanted to teach him first Because i know That i wasn’t going to be able to walk Him for a few months until he knew how To walk and i had this you know little Sporty puppy who has just energy like Crazy and i needed a way to make sure That every day he was getting that Energy out in productive ways that was Going to benefit his and i relationship So we played tug we played fetch we did Tricks we did a research recalls where Ken would hold five and i would dangle The long tug toy and i would take off And run and he would chase after me and Then grab the toy so i’m strengthening My recall i’m strengthening my response To name and i’m tiring my puppy out so i Don’t need to take him for a walk i i Can just start teaching him how to do All of these things and i don’t i’m not Limited to what i have to do i i have a Very exhausted puppy and a tired puppy Is a more well-behaved puppy you know as Professional dog trainers we really look At um We think about how can we stack value or How can we like uh Get us to the finish line uh more Quickly when it comes to like Foundational skills You’ll see in a lot of our videos and You might not notice it until i’ve Mentioned this especially our puppy
Videos we’re like stacking uh skills We’re stacking leadership training Exercises on top of each other so when That working on the out let’s say we Just the out when you’re working on your Out with your young puppy that’s a great Leadership moment and i know a lot of People talk about you know when Sometimes people struggle with Leadership like my puppy just won’t Listen my dog won’t listen to me and uh He’s jumping up on the counter all the Time and he’s doing all these things That i don’t like whatever the things Are we’ll say like what does that look Like what’s happening just before that You know uh well well he’s you know he’s Out in the Oh yeah kitchen In the kitchen All day and you know he just keeps Jumping up on the counter well Why is he in the kitchen all day that’s Right yeah That’s absolutely it imagine imagine why Is he by the counters imagine you were The the most valuable most interesting Thing in your puppy’s world from day one And they start to learn that anytime You’re there you’re doing something with Them you’re they’re you’re engaging You’re fun you are uh you know bringing Them food and like doing all the things That puppies understand as a resource
It’s valuable As that training progresses you’re not Thinking about um you know i need to do Two walks a day you’re thinking about Like okay i’m gonna do a fun little Training session tire the dog out maybe We’ll do a little walk because we’re not Quite at our you know uh walking not Great leash walking yet but i want to Work on it a little bit but you’re Really focused on the training we have a Training mindset and all of our Exercises and activities whether it’s Something to tire the puppy out or it’s An actual skill It all benefits the puppy this is Something that i think really people Just don’t quite get i wouldn’t have Gotten it until you know being in it for However many years now um it’s very Valuable and this is something that i Want to share with you on the youtube Channel it’s why we do a lot of video we Talk a lot in the studio you know it’s About value not views so we’ll publish a Video that we know won’t do it well in Youtube’s eyes but for like those 30 000 People it’s exactly what they need and It could help everybody who watches it So you know It’s i think it’s important you might be Overlooking some of the most important Training moments in your In your day uh and i want you to stop
Doing that Oh i hear a puppy upstairs and then you Just go tony okay Um okay the morales lopez family we have An eight-week-old jack russell terre Every time we put him in his crate It’s like someone is killing him okay so Talking about crate training this is Really important uh when it comes to Crate training so we talked a little bit Earlier about using the crate oh does he About using the crate overnight and a Lot of people do that you know the Puppies out during the day but it’s Bedtime we need to put the puppy away We’re working on house training or Whatever and uh puppy starts to make a Fuss but it’s also really important That you start to sh crate training is Training so we’ll work on some exercises Like we’ll always feed the puppy in the Crate for the first quite some time and Now we literally get the food bag out And five will go ripping all of our dogs They’ll go running into their crates Because they know that’s where the Values gonna end up But um working On some of those crate training uh games That we show and actually dan we have a Couple of videos i think that talk about Getting your puppy to love their crate Um is a great place to start The other thing is using it frequently
Throughout the day so yeah that was That’s what i wanted to say because Sometimes people get so so focused on Our tip of playing you know doing the Crate games and the in the building the Value that they think that they can only Use the crate when they’re playing those Games you know when we bring a puppy Home we just put them in the crate it Just just we don’t even think about it We just put them in the crate we just Use the crate we use it all day from the Moment they come uh home and we just we Just don’t make it a thing um i think a Lot of people just they they give their Puppies just so much freedom and they Only use the crate when the puppy needs To nap or when um you’re going to bed Some people don’t even use it that when They that then when they should be when They leave so they’re only using in Certain situations we use it until we’re Ready to do something with the puppy so I will play with a puppy and then i’ll Put the puppy in the crate and then i’ll Go and work on the computer or i’ll go Watch tv or i’ll go have a shower or I’ll go do things that i need to do my Puppy’s not out when those things are Happening when they’re when they’re Babies like this uh and then after a few Hours i’ll go get the puppy out again And we’ll do something fun and then once We’re
Done that the puppy i’ll put it back in The crate and then i’ll go and do things For myself so you know it’s don’t use Don’t just use the crate when you need To use the crate just use the crate just Use it all the time anytime you need to Um and then as the dog gets more Training you’ll start to notice that Because they now have the skill like go And lie down which is an awesome one to Train on your bed or whatever then you Don’t have to use your crate as much Because the dog actually has some skills And then before you know it you don’t Need to use the crate at all if that’s What you choose to do with with your dog So but in the early stages just use it Just use it because what will happen is He will stop acting like someone’s Killing him because it becomes a little Bit more familiar but you need to do That in addition to the fun stuff that We’re talking about yeah but you need to Remember you only have an eight week old Puppy so he’s so so young You are literally at the early stages so Just get going get going with it Um our friend Jess from snow dogs i just signed Eleanor up for intermediate two classes Here locally one more step to her canine Good citizen training congratulations Congratulations that’s very cool hello Back to you yeah if you guys love
Huskies and uh adventures and jeeps Check out snow dogs vlogs i love Jupiter’s place to go um thanks jess uh Uh okay That’s it for that So i i wanted to like run quickly down Um a handful of things that are gonna Make your puppy training more impactful You know more consistent it’s all about Having a plan and a handful of tips are Things that we talk about with a lot of Puppy students and but i want you to Really think about these how this Applies in your life Number one say what you mean and mean What you say so one thing i’m not going To do with my puppy Is uh repeat sit sit sit sit over and Over again if they don’t know what that Means if i don’t know the puppy’s 90 Likely to sit i’m probably not going to Use that word when they’re a little Teeny puppy you need to show them how to Sit you don’t want to use your voice to A point Where it just becomes ineffective the Last thing you want to do in those first Weeks home Is ruin your your puppy’s listening Skills and a lot of people accidentally Do that yeah definitely for sure Um i think dan’s telling us that we Missed something oh Okay can you just show us where it is
Dan yeah We didn’t we don’t have it saved to the Side Um yeah so to build on what ken was Saying um saying what you mean and Meaning what you say is is really really Important that idea of follow-through um You know dogs It’s sort of what we’ve kind of been Talking about we really want to try and Set our dogs up so that they can make Good choices but then we have to be Ready to help them when they don’t Because dogs are not robots they’re Going to make all kinds of mistakes and They’re going to do all kinds of things Wrong in fact you expect it yeah and That’s and that’s good because that Gives us an opportunity to say hey Here’s a learning opportunity you know i Don’t want you to do that But the follow-through and the Leadership and some of the questions About biting and all of this sort of Goes hand in hand so you know if i want My dog to come when they’re called for Example and i call come and they don’t Listen so i say it again and i say it And i get more angry or i’m like oh fine And i pull out treats and i do all these Things my dog then says i don’t really Have to listen to you because you are Just gonna bribe me so i’m just gonna Wait till you call me ten times because
Eventually hey watch this she’s going to Get the treats out and then i’ll go Running well in that situation your dog Learns not really to respect you so then How do you expect your dog to respect You in situations when they shouldn’t be Biting or they should get off the couch When you ask them to or they should stop Digging in the yard when you tell them To so if you allow them to not listen When you ask them to do things that’s Going to pop up in other areas of your Training so the follow-through is going To be really important and one of the Ways that we recommend that you do that Is by keeping a leash or a long line on Your dog when they are out and about With you so that if your dog is you know Digging in the garden or wherever and You say hey buddy get out of there leave That and he just dig dig dig digs away And doesn’t really care what you said You can very calmly without emotion and Without anger Walk up to the end of the long line say Leave it and just give the long line a Little pull and stop the dog from doing It if you do that a couple times the Dog’s going to say oh my gosh You follow through i need to listen then The next time they’re in the garden and You say hey leave it your dog’s going to Say oh i need to leave it because Otherwise she’s going to come get the
Line and then that turns into my dog’s Walking towards the garden and i think My dog probably is going to maybe think About digging there i can then say hey You leave that and without ever digging The dog walks away yeah simply because i Had initial follow-through and good Consistency so that has to do with Timing that has to do with consistency That’s to do with follow-through and That has to do with supervision so if I’m not watching and being able to catch The dog in the act of doing that thing It’s really hard for me to do all the Other steps i’ve just explained um Knocked off half of the points that i Wanted to oh sorry i talked about it on My list but i just built it all in one i Think i think it’s quite appropriate Yeah and when you said garden uh our uk Students and uk friends uh i think that Means like their yard doesn’t it oh a Garden is a yard and yeah i think so Yeah yeah so what do they call a garden Then i don’t know I don’t know i’m gonna ask my uk friends Probably something awesome though yeah It probably is that’s like a fun twang Too yep Uh thank you team wave Team wavy for the super chat uh my four Month old golden bites me and lunges When he’s frustrated about something We’ve tried redirecting yelping puppy
Time out but he continues So uh i’m trying to figure out What this question is Bites me and lunges when he’s frustrated About something afraid redirecting Yelping puppy time out But he continues it sounds like you’re Doing a lot of different things and it’s Confusing yeah Yelping or timeouts those two things are Not really going to be effective because They aren’t really addressing the things In the moment so i actually just talked About timing in that the last thing that I was saying and timing is really Important um when it comes to behaviors Like this Also consistency Redirecting is is going to be your best Bet and if you’ve tried redirecting and It’s not working my guess is there’s Something probably slightly off with Your technique with your follow through With your consistency with your timing Some things something’s missing because Redirection absolutely is what needs to Happen in this situation also prevention So if i have a dog that starts to get a Little bit out of control and that you Know they start to ramp up their energy I might with some training say hey Settle sit i might have the dog do that Sit at my side for control like i Mentioned earlier so i’m gonna stop the
Problem before it starts to get into Something and this is where i said this Is why training your dog is so important Because you can pull from different Exercises and skills that you’ve worked On with your dog and you can use it to Combat some of those bratty situations When our dogs are just being a pill and We need to address them so um prevention Is going to be key and then correction You’re going to do that by redirection And you just need to make sure that You’re evaluating um how you’re holding The leash are you holding it with good Technique are you continuing to redirect Until the dog actually gets the message Or are you just doing a token Redirection and then Not seeing whether it affects change Yeah um so there’s there’s a few things That are probably going in i mean at Four months old it’s probably uh It’s frustrating but it’s not nearly as Uh Annoying as it will be in four more Months yeah sooner that you get on this The better it’s actually a good example You’re talking about like getting the Dog to do something after the Redirection like get the dog to sit in In position or i was actually saying to Do that before you even have to redirect So if my dog’s starting to get wiggly And crazy usually the next thing that
Starts to happen is they lunge and they Bite well i’m not gonna let the lunging Invite happen because i’m already gonna Be getting the dog to sit and stopping Them at the base of the problem rather Than whatever what you’re saying though Is also great so if you’re redirecting The dog and you affect change yeah you See change there’s a great example of This i was thinking about the video we You know we shot it a while ago i think But we had highlight the puppy and Highlight was chewing on something i Mean uh i don’t remember what it was and This isn’t like jumping and biting but This was a chewing kale redirected the Puppy oh when she was trying to get Inside the training bag Yeah exactly yeah so kale redirected the Puppy uh and then got highlighted away Where hailey was oh okay well and kale Asked her to sit the puppy sat for a Handful of seconds and kale rewarded her So she went from doing something that You don’t want caleb gave her the Information no no that’s not what you do This is what you do and that like Training moment was so great i mean it’s A great opportunity to show the dog no No don’t do that but i do want you to do This because if it’s just don’t do that Don’t do that don’t do that how on earth Is the puppy gonna know well what do you Want them yeah yeah for sure um
From crayola coffee bean that’s a fun Name i have a three-month-old Semi-edited is biting and clamping down On my wrists and feet when excited no Growling any advice before i see my own Skeleton oh boy so this i mean we’re Getting a lot of uh nipping and biting Questions and they don’t change they Don’t yeah she just said yeah you can Skip my question you’ve answered okay Great yeah okay i’m actually i’m gonna Post that one too that’s a funny little Thing to add okay crayola coffee bean Yeah i’m glad we got a chance to talk About this uh but thank you it’s it what I hope that you see though is that this Is a common problem lots of people you Know it’s very normal for puppies and Young dogs to go through nipping and Biting because they’re you know they’re Bratty and they’re energetic and they’re Just they don’t respect you yet and they Don’t think they have to listen they’re Treating you like a litter mate and That’s why the training is is so Important so um you know know that You’re not alone it’s a pretty normal Thing but it’s also i don’t want to say That it’s normal and then you’d be like Oh they’re just a puppy it’s okay it’s Not okay you need to stop the nipping And biting you know we don’t let it go Past a few weeks home before we’re on Top of the nipping and biting we don’t
Let them get to you know four months Five months six months seven months and The puppy the nipping and biting Should be long gone by then however you Guys aren’t professional dog trainers so You need to the guidance to know so yes It’s normal but no it’s not acceptable But i do need to get on it and i know You love hanging out with the puppy Central students on the calls so maybe It still is still going on for some of These guys and what can they do to uh You know get some advice from a Professional dog trainer yeah we do we Have a great course called puppy Essentials it’s for dogs that are um Under four months and um we Dive deep into all kinds of puppy Training problems uh one of the big ones Is nipping and biting and um we talk About um correction techniques and make Sure that you’re comfortable with that But we also talked to you about how you Can set the puppy up so that the nipping And biting doesn’t happen in the first Place so we have a really great course That’s um that’s instructional there’s Videos that you can follow but the Absolute best thing about puppy Essentials and with life skills if you Have an older dog that’s over four Months um Then life skills would be where you Would enter but there is so much
Guidance and coaching from instructors That you really You get help every step of the way so You know we get to know you and your Puppies really well so we’re able to Give you personalized help And guidance to make sure that you’re Doing things the right way it’s very Very interactive online course it’s not A self-learning course we we’re guiding You there’s a A Group that you can go to every single Day to ask questions an instructor will Answer you very very quickly you can see Other people’s questions to see that you Know there’s lots of things going on we Do weekly zoom calls where we um you Know dive deep on certain things you Guys have a chance to see us and we can Interact with you so the list goes on It’s really really awesome and it starts Anytime so you can sign up whenever you Want Um [Music] And eric anderson mentions Talking about uh crate training i think So they did with pumpkin only is great For naps and sleep now she’s 16 no he Now is 16 months and she’s finally likes It enough to just go in and chill yeah So she’s saying that initially she only Used it for naps and sleeps and then she
Started using it more and now she’s Great with it um levante 81 damn dan Mentioned that we missed one um I had a question about living in an Apartment work from home quite until Someone is in the hallway other dogs Other dogs kids running and packages so Like knocking on the door so we actually Um we shot a video on this not that long Ago but the dog was so great that we Ended up not publishing the video like It just worked so quickly um and the dog Was Super pumped when the doorbell rang or When the door got knocked on but we were Working on it and it got fixed too Quickly So let’s talk a little bit about like Knocking in the door some of the things That we would do actually we did this Should we with euchre recently yeah Let’s talk a little bit about what we Did with euchre if you guys remember That series firmware yeah um this is Something where You know again you kind of need to know Why is the dog excited or is the dog Nervous or spooky um you might deal with It slightly differently depending on the Root of the issue but One of the best things to do is to give Your dog an alternative behavior to do Instead of barking when they hear noise So especially if like somebody comes to
The door that’s a really good easy way To practice it um have your puppy go and Do something when somebody comes to the Door maybe it’s you know initially Putting a lot of value for going and Lying on a bed aside from somebody Knocking on the door just teach that Individually so your puppy loves that They think it’s a trick they think it’s Awesome and then the next time somebody Knocks on the door or maybe your husband Or your wife goes outside Kale how do we know People just come to our door randomly How am i supposed to know when someone’s Coming you You set it up and you send a family Member outside family member outside you Um You’re i’m not on your level right now Um you send a family member outside and You have them knock on the door so you Can practice having your dog go to their Bed to reward them and then you send Your family member back outside and you Do it again you do it like five or six Times in a row until your puppy says i Love when knocking on the door happens Because you send me to my bed and get Lots of rewards and lots of um you know Cookies for that so you turn an annoying Thing into something that’s uh positive But um like ken was Goofily saying there you can’t um do
This just in that one-off that those Things happen and in your case you’re Talking about sounds that are happening Without your control just random things Apartment things happening so that’s why It’s even more important that you set This up and you practice it so that the Dog has a little bit more money in the Bank so that when it happens randomly Surprisingly and you’re not ready for it Um you’re not going to get such a Reaction from the puppy i mean if it’s Really uh creates a lot of dysfunction You can do little things like you know We had a dog who’s really afraid of Thunder and lightning so we’d prepare Like a little space for her that was Very comforting but we’d also put on Like some music some quiet music Sometimes i can take that edge off a Little bit and those sounds aren’t so Abrupt but the training and everybody’s Got a cell phone now so when people are Coming over or you know call your friend Over and say hey text me when you’re you Know just about to come up to my floor And you can get into training mode and Now you’re ready to deal with this issue Now you’re ready to work on it but every Single time somebody’s coming to your Door or you know a friend or someone to Setting up you’re ready you have to be Able to train through it Uh okay um
Perfect i think we got that as well Um natural training opportunities that You have throughout the day they there Will be many every single time you feed Your puppy it’s a natural training Opportunity every single time you let Them out of their crate here’s a quick Natural training opportunity that we Talk about in Maybe it’s the first week home when we Showed five starting to sig indicate to Go to the door Um People struggle with puppy house Training i get it it can be frustrating But not if you have a plan so you know a Natural training opportunity is taking Your puppy out for the first time every Single morning um you know you know that Their bladder or maybe their bowels are Going to be full so something you can do Is set them down at the door and have Your leash on have your shoes on and be Ready so the moment that they start to Give you the signals like sniffing the Ground or like moving towards the door Or indicating towards the door you can Capture that moment say yes you go Outside and out you go Natural training opportunities like uh You know Sitting go lie in your bed like these Things happen all the time with a puppy So take advantage of some of these
Things uh you know coming um coming in From outside maybe you get the puppy to Just sit for a moment and then you Release them and then you can have a Play time or whatever um the natural Training opportunities are a big way It’s like the it’s like the stepping Stone from training town to real life The real world and it’s it’s good for You to get in the habit of uh taking Advantage yeah i know something that i Used to do with with my puppy when he Was younger is um you know in the Morning when i would give him his Breakfast i wouldn’t give him his whole Portion i would just give him you know Some of the portion and then i would Keep the remaining portion and i might Put some additional goodies into like a Little ziploc bag and i would just like Throw that in my pocket and i would just Have it on me and i would use those uh Rewards for um situations like ken’s Talking about but i would also use them Any time he made a great choice without Me asking him to so if he ever just Offered to like sit and look at me i Would reward him have you ever went you Know late on the bed and grabbed a bone And go and lie down i would walk over And i would reward him if he ever like Walked by the stove and like looked up On the stove and then chose just to keep Walking yes good boy i would reward him
So you know i was again all about trying To say yes you’re right yes you’re right That’s a great choice yes you’re right Because then the dog says wow You’re really nice yeah you you keep Rewarding me this is really really great And you have a happy you know well Listening puppy so that’s another little Tip that you can do is keep some rewards On you and again this isn’t forever you Don’t have to do this for your dog’s Whole life but in the early stages if You’re really trying to ramp up your Reinforcement with a dog that’s Something that i would do that way They’re not getting a bunch of Additional treats on top of their food You’re kind of lengthening the food Throughout the day man we this is a Information packed episode yep tons of Good stuff information station rebecca Vb i apologize i think we missed uh Rebecca’s super chat earlier in the show I love ken’s just accidentally Uh deleting things i think i love it’s Go yeah i i love practice i love irish Wolfhounds and i’ll be getting uh my First wolfy puppy in the spring any tips On how to adopt crate training for the Giant breeds okay This is a good question and it’s Actually something that we um Maybe we shot a video about uh wolf Hounds but um either way let’s talk a
Little bit about what instructor steve Uh uh had done what what you can suggest Yeah giant breeds i mean the good news Is you don’t really have to do anything Different Not a whole lot different you just need To make sure that you buy a bigger size Crate now when you have uh uh your dog If you decide that you’re going to use a Crate later on down the road you might Even use an x-men later on down the road Because of the size of the dog they Might not know what an x-pen is an x-pen Is like a it’s like eight-sided yeah Four by four Metal Areas like fencing like a little fence Yeah that you can collapse clip together And fold down and really handy with the Giant they’re really handy with a giant Breed they’re really handy with all dogs But they’re not to replace a crate They’re just to sort of use an addition Once the dog has some training yeah but That’s what might be what i suggest and If you decide you’re going to get a big Crate but you’re probably too small for It you could maybe get a barricade um And make the crate the crate should Always be just big enough that the puppy Can stand sit lie down lie down and put Their legs out like stretch but it Really shouldn’t be any bigger than that So that the puppy doesn’t start having
Accidents or be unsettled in it it needs To feel very den-like because they they Enjoy that more um so a barricade would Be really helpful um i would work a lot On teaching the puppy to comfortably go In and out of the crate so that um Obviously when the dog gets bigger it’s Not like you can just pick them up and Plop them in like any other dog so going In on command is gonna be a really Important thing for you to take your Time uh training and teaching um And uh supervision supervision is Important yeah because your uh wolf Wolfhound puppy is going to be able to Put their little head on the countertops They won’t have to jump yeah they’ll Just like rest their face on your yeah There are some different things you have To teach with those breeds yeah about Manners because they see the world a Little differently than most dogs do They’re great dogs though sherry burson We’re getting or we’re struggling to get Our nine week old pit mix to listen to Commands and play it while we’re outside Okay let’s talk about this she’ll potty Then immediately dart to the door Let’s try and get them sort of two Different listen and play when we’re Outside yeah so let’s talk about Listening and playing with a nine week Old puppy when they’re outside first Uh yeah so i’ve mentioned this um
Already on the on the stream but one of The things we recommend for outside Control is having a long line attached Um just to give the puppy a little bit More freedom but then also at the same Time not so much freedom that they can Do their own thing um you know a lot of Times we have puppies initially when we First bring a puppy home they’re pretty Good at following us because they don’t Really know any better but usually you Just have to give that a couple days and Then they’re on a mission to go and Explore and take in new things so having A long line is really important uh it’s Essential really for puppy training uh We usually get ones that are about 20 25 Feet long and we attach them to the Puppy’s collar so when we’re outside and The puppy decides to you know run away Or go investigate or dig or chase Something we have an opportunity to stop Them from doing that so we have a little Bit more control um the other thing that We would do with a really young puppy Actually we would do this with any age Of puppy this is not really age specific Is when we go outside um we would go Outside either to do our business so go Out for the potty the potty thing the Puppy yep that’s right uh or um we’re Going outside with um some type of Intention so i’m not just going to go Outside and let my puppy just kind of
Mill around and do their own thing Because when they’re puppies they’re They’re just going to find something Usually naughty to do because they’re They don’t know any better so if i’m Going outside with you with a young Puppy like that i’m going to go outside Maybe have them take them for a pee and Then i might practice some chase games Or i might practice luring them with Some treats or i might do a little bit Of tug For five six maybe ten minutes and then We go back inside again so you need to Make sure that the sessions outside are Short and sweet and they have intention So that your puppy isn’t just having an Opportunity to do their own thing you’re Keeping them busy um and keep them on The line or leash and then the second Part uh potty uh michelle potty then Immediately dart to the door um Oh i think i’m reading this differently Now maybe she’ll potty outside and then Immediately wants to go back inside is That how you’re internalizing that i’m Not sure i sort of uh read it as like The dog’s Sprinting back to the door yeah that Tells me maybe is the is the puppy Worried about being outside Um i mean my answer before doesn’t Change um From what i said um but again i think
The leash and the line on your puppy is Going to be a game changer and you don’t Need to be outside for a super long time And you go out for you know short Periods of time more often Um and then maybe have a command that That you say when you’re going to go to The door so that that starts becoming Something that’s on command so they Don’t just take off and bolt to the door Whenever you want but if there’s some um Stress or uncertainty in in your Question um Then i would encourage you to take Things slowly yeah okay Action-packed what What an hour uh it’s been Amazing i see maple 88s dropping uh 4.99 Super chat thank you for the super chat I’ll get our instructors to keep an eye Out for that uh it took us a little While to shake the rust off But uh i’m pumped that we got here i Want to thank you for joining us i want To thank our instructors uh uh mccann Dogs crew for being amazing in the chat Helping you guys out daniel muttering Dropping lots of links i want to thank You for another great show i’m never Doing a live stream ever again without Having something to drink yeah that Makes a challenge i didn’t have any Water and i’m dying right now some Purple water i do thank you you had that
Sitting there that whole time and you Never gave it to me yeah what kind of Husband are you well i didn’t realize You’re that thirsty Before we go natalia Hi yeah i know we’re getting a puppy November my husband doesn’t want the dog To potty all over our yard uh how can i Teach him to go in one set place Supervision and uh bring the dog over to That spot it’s going to be really Important but supervision is key and Keeping the puppy on a leash that’s the Second thing is it’s so important yeah So that if they do go somewhere where They’re not supposed to you can stop Them and then take them to the correct Spot you handle it exactly the same way If they were going to the bathroom Somewhere in the house that you didn’t Want them to you sort of do the same Thing when they’re outside now kale’s Thirsty i’m hungry we haven’t had dinner I think it’s time we’re going to have Burgers i think i’m pumped yeah so with All of the teaching all of the training All of the things that we talked about Tonight the rest my friends well that is Up to you We do these live streams to educate you But more importantly to motivate you you Can have the dog that you’ve always Wanted but it’s just going to take you a Little bit of work
