I want you to imagine for a moment that You have that wild and crazy pup at the End of your leash right now but think About when you’re out and you’re going On those Enjoyable relaxing walks imagine for a Second going to the park and just Playing fetch and they’re having fun They’re bringing the ball back you’re Out going for a hike and your dog is Just sort of meandering around keeping Nearby you this is the gap that we have In a lot of our training where we do uh The training exercises we you know we Follow all the steps and then we try to Put it into practice and that’s where Things start to fall apart well if you Ima can imagine some of these things Tonight we’re going to give you some of The tweaks that you need to make in your Training that will allow you to have the Kind of focus that you’re looking for That we’re all looking for from our dogs In training it’s going to make a These kinds of videos we love doing the Lives you know we love doing the train Station live Because we can give you information that You can start implementing tonight you Know maybe it’s the the your walk later After the show you know after we’ve shut Down the lights here in the train Station and all the trains have left And you’re heading out for your walk
Last walk of the night with your dog Maybe that’s when you can start Implementing some of these things but Some of the tips we’re going to give you Five tips tonight to talk about more Focus that you can get when you’re Training outside is something i think Everyone will benefit from i’m ken Steepe I’m cam mccann welcome back to mccann Dogs I think we have a hot mic hot mic now we Uh Didn’t go live two weeks ago we go live Every two weeks uh every second thursday We’re here live here in the train Station and um we didn’t go live two Weeks ago because kale was in the Netherlands competing with beeline who You guys have probably seen from the Channel Yeah you want to talk a little bit about You know where you were what you were Doing yeah i was in netherlands Competing at the agility world Championships at a big event called World agility open um it was pretty Exciting Yeah It’s uh it’s not um It’s not run for a couple years due to Covid so it was just really exciting to Get back out there i was competing Representing team canada um
We did really really well we uh competed In a couple of events but one of the Events that i ended up doing quite well In is called the pentathlon which is um As it sounds it’s a series of five uh Five uh courses um we actually won one Of the rounds which was super exciting We got to do our victory lap and Have our canada flag was really really Cool the challenge about when you can When you’re traveling kale’s won 21 Gold medals 21 world championships not With b-line not with b-line no previous Dogs multi-five different dogs yeah yeah Um and the challenge when she travels Away she goes away is that often time It’s uh you know she’s competing Wherever she is like in the in the Morning but here it’s like the wee hours Of the morning it’s like three three Thirty yeah Yeah so i’m trying i’m staying awake Watching it on the on my phone you know Trying to stay awake and then uh my days My days turn into nights and my nights Turn into dates but it’s fun to uh Follow along and it was really exciting To see bee do so well especially in that Event she looked really really yeah it Was great Now maybe you guys i’ve seen some people Who have said uh oh i didn’t know you Guys did it live let me know if it’s Your first time here in the train
Station just type new if it’s your first Time with us we do uh these shows every Two weeks every second thursday and we Like to sit down dive a little deeper Into dog training and be able to answer Some of your questions um take a Different look you know youtube is a Pretty one-directional experience and You consume videos maybe they’re right For your dog maybe they’re not maybe You’re doing things right maybe not well Tonight’s the night when we can talk a Little bit more about some of these Things break things break down some of Those skills so if you’re new Let us know we can sort of cater How we teach this uh tonight to you Um The other thing that we love to do is to Find out where you guys are joining us From we have students in our online we Have two on uh we have a handful of Online training programs but We have uh 56 57 countries represented now Um in those online training uh classes And uh every week you know we hang out With those students but um it’s very Cool to find out people from all over The world have the same dog training Challenges that you do um so when we Jump in here at the train station we hop Aboard the training you’re not alone Absolutely yeah absolutely we want to
Know where you’re joining us from uh i Personally enjoy going through the chat After the fact after the show’s uh Recorded and you know it’s available on Youtube and i can find it where some of These places are i’ve learned so much About most A lot of north american geography um and Some from europe you know there’s some Very interesting places there is um oh Shoot i forget what it’s called uh There’s a tiny little island uh off of The coast of england i believe it was That uh we had a viewer from and it’s This teeny tiny little island so cool Yeah and uh you know it’s somebody Joining us here in the train Station so that was really cool to see I see uh erica picos who’s also one of Our heart dog supporters she’s joining Us here If you look at the chat we’re mentioning Erica you know if uh uh if the name’s in Green they’re part of the heart dog team So they are our heart dog supporters you Can join and get a membership you get Access to all sorts of stickers and Emojis uh you also get your name Highlighted in green as part of the Heart dog supporter club i think it’s Maybe 4.99 a month or something like That um but if the uh if the names in Blue they’re part of the mccann dogs Crew so you’re going to see uh you have
Quite the uh sayings yeah yeah well the Green one just came to me yeah Uh you’ll see instructor alexis is with Us tonight we have dan lots of links Luton dan the moderator man who has made You made us some very cool uh elements For tonight’s show and uh it’s gonna Help you learn you know we’re gonna it’s Gonna help you to sort of organize what These points are that we’re talking About and you know move things a lot Along for you guys but um So you’ll see lots of links luton in the Chat with us as well and you’ll probably See some of our other instructors Joining in as well they’ll be able to Answer some of your training Questions Working outside is Probably one of the more challenging Things that a lot of students first Encounter Often yeah and uh as dog trainers There’s some things we naturally do you Know we’re just a little bit more aware Of that we’re gonna talk about tonight That you can implement into your Training no matter what stage of Training that you’re at But Let’s talk a little bit about you know The benefits of having a dog that’s a Little bit more attentive a little bit More focused in those outdoor
Spaces you know it’s summertime that’s Why we’re doing it weather’s getting Nice we want to get outside with our Dogs yeah i mean most of us got a dog to Be you know a really important and Special part of our family and when You’re going out and you’re doing things Outside it it’s really nice to be able To take your dog with you actually i Would love to say this when i was in Europe Um The dog culture over there is really Different I was able to take my dog to restaurants I was able to take my dogs to flower Gardens all kinds of of places and um no Shortage of those in holland no no they Were absolutely amazing but was really Nice is the dogs that were there were Really well behaved because people were Taking the time to ensure that they Could walk on a leash and could connect With them and i was glad that bee had so Many so much training because we could Sit and have a coffee and enjoy a nice Fresh apple pie oh so delicious and b Just sort of hung out at our at our feet And it’s really nice but you know that’s Sort of a unique situation but what if You wanted to go camping what if you’re Like hiking what if you wanna for me i Love in the summer my favorite thing to Do is get on the water and go paddle
Boarding my dogs come with me every Single time i paddle board or if i go Kayaking But because they listen they can go and They can enjoy life they’re not stuck in The back of a yard where they just get You know one or two walks a day if They’re lucky because they’re so Ill-behaved and you know annoying to Hang out with when you can train them Well you’re going to want to spend more Time with them you’re going to want to Have them be incorporated into the Things you do and in fact you might Literally shape your life choices around Being able to take your dog with you Because they’re so great we’ve done that So this is what i learned and You guys might not know but um uh i Started at mccann dogs as a student you Know i went there because i had a wild And crazy unruly black labrador Retriever that i had taken to the vet And that said listen you have to go over To mccann dogs i can hardly even assess Her and i really didn’t understand the Potential that was there the Opportunities that i could have with the Dog that would listen to me that we we Could go on walks that wasn’t pulling me Down the street that i could go off Leash you know i used to ride mountain Bikes a lot we’re in here in um ontario Canada and lots of great outdoor
Activities to do and uh she would then She could come with me you know when She’d listen it allowed me to do so many More things that’s the i ideal That’s the aspirational goals i had when I got a dog and maybe you’re at a point Now where you’re just so frustrated it’s Just not going as well as you wanted it To well these are the steps we talk About a lot of these things in our Videos but these are the steps that were When you have a foundation to get better Skills outside to get more focus outside I almost missed this but I see people joining us from all over The place i’m going to quickly go down Here erica’s joining us from sydney Australia see canada ontario uh leanne’s Joining us from new york hannah from Spokane washington uh connecticut Argentina Biloxi mississippi teresa welcome back Lots of aussies tonight from uh guelph Perth western australia wisconsin Greensboro north carolina tucson arizona Dallas texas pretty hot there dj Mountain home idaho yeah memphis yeah Tennessee georgia uh very cool thank you Guys for joining us and i see leah’s Joining us from central florida again There’s some pretty hot spaces we have a Couple videos that might be helpful for You guys on the channel to talk about Heat emergencies with your dog
You definitely should check those out uh After the fact Now um Should i even mention where we are You know you know what let’s just skip Right by usually this is the point where We say in case you don’t know who we are I’m ken steepe this is kale mccann we’re Professional dog trainers at mccann dogs Um kale’s family business she grew up Training dogs i’ve been training with Mccann dogs for about 15 years now and Um Just love this opportunity to hang out With you guys answer some questions so Talking about getting more focus outside I think one thing that was really Important for me to learn to understand Is that the skills that i have in a Controlled environment whether that’s Training in your house in your apartment In a uh maybe it’s even like something Like a parking lot which there’s not a Lot of other things going on um When you get out into the real world and You are you know on a busier street or a Busier you know uh going to the park Let’s say uh that adds an entirely new Layer of difficulty so you really need To be mindful of that the idea oh here’s Where i can add this thing About this Wow It’s very summery absolutely be mindful
Of the fact that being outside adds a Layer of difficulty so whatever level You’re at in your training you need to Take a step back and maybe reinforce Some of the good choices that your dog’s Making maybe that means that uh Previously they were you know on a 10 Foot long line or they were on a flexi Or something and we certainly don’t Suggest using something like a flexi so When you get into a training scenario Back on that six foot leash you need a Little bit more control being outside Makes things more complicated maybe we Can talk a little bit about um some of The things we took beeline When she was just a wee little puppy Down to the the lake uh down from where We live and um Talk about some things we did there Because that was her first experience in A busier environment and we needed to be Looking for that video today and i Couldn’t remember what it was called Yeah i can get you the link for it but We needed to do some things even with a Well-trained dog that uh listens that’s A new challenge that’s an extra layer of Difficulty so what did we do to make Things easier for her yeah i think People need to remember that Really the sum of it is dogs are very Situational learners and we have to Understand that just because they can do
Something in your kitchen when you’re You know cutting up vegetables doesn’t Mean that they can walk through a city With lots of people Um you know they have to to learn Different scenarios and they also have To be eased into it so Excuse me with b when we went down to The city For the first time we live in a pretty Quiet neighborhood and we wanted to give Her a little bit more exposure to sounds And more people and just busyness Happening um We went and we i was armed with all of Her favorite things i had super high Value rewards um i had she loved to play Tug so i had a tug toy with me um i also Uh walked her on a gentle a gentle Leader and a leash and i did that she Was actually pretty good at walking on a Leash at that point but she Was a type of dog that would get very Easily overwhelmed by stuff and then she Would kind of get a little bit worried And i found that with the jenna leader On she um Was less stressed she just sort of Relaxed and and she was a little bit More confident she felt i think a bit More secure with it on so that was Really helpful and we literally just Started not by like walking through Everything i think we might have gone
And got ice cream to begin with or Something yeah something like that and We sat and um one of us went in got ice Cream the other one sat outside um at The patio and bee just laid down and Every time people would walk by i would Reward her and we just sort of let her Check things out and we did something That was controlled so it wasn’t like go Here go there here’s a bunch of things Happening at the same time it was just a Little quieter just to kind of ease it In and that’s really smart thing to do Because we’re always you if you’ve Watched our channel you have heard us Say this a million times we want to set The dog up to be successful what we’re Not looking to do is to put the dog into A situation where they’re going to fail Whether they’re going to get overwhelmed Whether they’re going to get scared or Whatever the situation might be so we Really wanted to ease into it um then we Went to the park where there was a few More people There was also like a ton of seagulls And lots of different distractions and i Remember there was two uh garbage pails Or garbage cans that were there and um Remember i was doing like some of her Agility training uh wrapping her and and Having her run around the barrels Because she loves that exercise at home And as soon as we started doing that she
Was like oh this is fun i know what this Is so taking something that i knew she Knew very well i knew she really enjoyed And i implemented that in a new Situation so that i was showing her Something that was familiar in a place That was unfamiliar i’m not necessarily Going to go to a new location and then Start teaching her things that she’s Never seen before i want to start off by Just letting her have a whole bunch of Wins to either for in her case it was to Build her confidence but maybe in your Dog’s case it’s to be more focused maybe Your dog’s overly confident but they Just are not very attentive so starting With something that’ll be easier could Accomplish that as well yeah i love that And a huge takeaway for you at home is Taking something that’s familiar and Doing it in a place that’s unfamiliar The last thing you want to be doing is Taking your dog down and testing out Things you want to do something that you Know that they can do and change one Thing there’s one small variable maybe It’s location maybe you can uh you know Work on a sit stay maybe your dog like The world is really distracting for your Dog maybe a stationary exercise is the Perfect exercise to be working on Because you have so much more control That’s why i love sit at your side like That one exercise sit at your side
Allows you to have good timing allows You to have lots of control it allows You to build some relationship value you Know you can reward your dog all they Have to do is sit in position and Sometimes that’s a great starting point I know a lot of people struggle with as Soon as i step out the door as soon as i See another person my dog pulls at the End of their leash well maybe if you had Built if you were building a little bit More reinforcement simply for attention That’s a great foundation and you’ve Also reminded your dog that it’s worth It to listen a little bit yeah before You make it more complicated Yeah because i think what happens is People um Step out and they Go forward and they just think that they Can take their dog on a loose leash walk You know in a busy place or in lots of Distractions and we’re using the city as A um as an example for you maybe you Live in the city and your dog sees it All the time The location really isn’t the point it’s The idea of being outside where things Are a little bit more unpredictable in The house things can be more controlled You can control the distractions you can Minimize them you can maximize them you Can do what you ever want but when you Go outside
You can’t on command ask the bird to Come by or the squirrel to run across Your lawn or the neighbor to come by or Whatever situation happens those things Are a little bit more unpredictable so You need to be able to have a few things In place that you can utilize that Allows you to get in control um most People make the mistake of giving their Dog too much opportunity to rehearse bad Behavior or get into a bad situation and Then if they don’t have a lot of Training it’s hard to reel back from That because now the dog’s already Pulling on the leash or they’re already Jumping on that person or they’ve Already taken off and they’re chasing That person down the street um but if You had a little bit more knowledge About you know setting your dog up and And maybe working something a bit more Controlled you could maybe have Prevented those things from happening Because what you don’t want to do is let Your dog learn That doing those disobedient things is Rewarding it’s fun to chase squirrels It’s fun to you know go after things so If they’re rehearsing those things it’s Hard to break because now they now they Know they’re fun where like our puppy For example um he is just just turned Six months old so he’s still a little Guy um but
He’s not really had an opportunity to do Some of those things because he’s always On a long line and he’s always i always Have some type of control maintained so That if something pops up i’m ready to Deal with it and i can um use it as a Learning opportunity instead of uh oh my Gosh i have to go find my dog he’s run Away and i can’t find any kind of Situation i think that’s important for You to understand um Is that The chase the dog chasing something is Reward enough especially for a lot of Breeds Yeah the breeds are so uh focused uh Like sight hounds is a great example Simply chasing after something is more Rewarding than a lot of the things that You could even offer so allowing them to Rehearse that is a bad bad idea you need To be really mindful of that and have a Little bit more control or have a Back-up plan we always have a back-up Plan we never put our dogs in a Situation where they could just get Loose and make their own choices unless We know that they’re 99.99 Likely to turn otherwise we’ll have a Leash or a line on them we’ll have some Way to be able to go you know manage Them guide them back if they make a big Mistake i think another simple thing too Is when you literally go through the
Threshold of your door when you Literally step out the door What’s happening with your dog because If you step out the door and right at That moment your dog’s already b-bopping Into the end of the leash or they’re Focused on what they can look at and They don’t even know that you exist Right there is is is the beginning of Your problem because if you don’t have Any attention or connection with your Dog at that point you’re sure is heck Not going to have attention when you’re Actually out for a walk or out there so Um i know with with our dogs and what we Would suggest that you do with your dog Is is start with a bit of control when We take our pup outside to go to the Bathroom number one right now he always Has a leash or a long line on and ever Since the day we started We would go out the door we sort of have A Um What do you call that uh like a landing Area yeah and then steps down so it’s Not like steps right away there’s like a Little area and then steps down so when We get to our lip that little area we Always make him sit and then look at us Yeah and then we go down the stairs and He’s been doing that for four months now Every single day we don’t even have to Ask him now because he’s like this is
What we do i said i look okay and then We go down um to go inside he waits at The door until we open the door and then We let him in so when you develop these Routines now of course when we first did It the first couple once i he would say Sit i would use some food to lure him Into a sit i would feed him like six or Seven times look at me feed feed feed Feet good boy okay let’s go and it was Just positive reinforcement over and Over and over and over again so he went This this is pretty cool it’s really Easy i have to sit here i have to look At you you feed me this is not very Difficult um and when you get a lot of Reinforcement they start to to do it on Their own versus just not giving them Any information at all but going out the Door can be a really good place to to Start if you feel like there’s no Nothing happening right now just start With something small like the the Connection at the door yeah i love that Um i mean so many people could benefit From that and if you have a puppy right Now we publish a video I’m going to say it’s a couple of weeks Ago about in the midst moments in your Training we recorded it a while ago i Get maybe it’s two videos ago if you Check out our page but it’s going It’s little tweaks like this like Getting control on the front step that’s
Not in that video but it’s specifically For puppies before they get out of the Crate but these are the winds these are The winds that will make a massive Difference in your training this is how We people always say like You know so a great example i literally When we get a if someone says hey can i Need help with this thing and we’ll take The puppy for a training video i can’t Let the puppy near kale until the Camera’s rolling because things get Fixed and people are like oh that’s a Trained dog she’s using i don’t get it You’re using a trained dog but it’s Because of these little things that you Can do and it’s so simple and it’s with Good timing but it’s not about the puppy It’s about you yeah so here are some Missed moments that you are you know Missing in your your day from this video From a couple weeks maybe Lots of links yeah dan dan the moderator Man just dropped the link for that so if You have a puppy make sure you check out That video after the live stream Because much like this is so cheap that Kale gave you these moments are Important you have to address things and You might not know how to address things And that’s why you need to come and take Classes so we can teach you all of that Stuff right but if you don’t know how to Address things that’s what happens when
We get the puppies and they jump up and They nip or they do this that i just Address it right then and there very Calmly very relaxed and the puppy goes Oh you’re a leader and then it’s super Simple but it’s so much more than that It’s so much more than that it’s so much More about than than just addressing Like the little thing changes that You’ll make yes you know when we bring a Puppy in our house that’s some of the Things the puppy’s not allowed to do Some of these things Yeah some of the things that your dog Won’t be allowed to do or shouldn’t be Doing if you’re having a specific Problem that’s where the online training You know can really be helpful because Then we can actually you know interact With you and your dog but um i had i was Wondering i can’t quite tell if our Audio is good Is our audio okay i’m i’m just That’s a question i had made a lot of Changes this week to the live streams Okay all right good okay great i’m glad That that’s okay Uh the second eyebrow the eyebrow wiggle At the end gets me every time It’s so ridiculous Uh Point number two Food won’t fix everything and um I think i’m glad you put this one in
There because people often think that All we do is use food in our training Which Couldn’t be further from the truth yeah Absolutely and i think um you know we Have a video coming up really soon that Talks a little bit about timing and why Timing is important and how it can Absolutely change your dog training but Um But When i say food won’t fix everything There’s going to be times when you’re Out with your dog and you have you could Have a steak you’d have the most Whatever their favorite thing is the Most delicious thing for them and they Couldn’t care less it’s not it’s not About your food and when that happens You know okay let’s talk when high value Food is important you know when is high Value food important in our training High value food is important uh when you Are dealing with more extractions and You need you know more of the big gums Or sometimes we’ll use higher value food To help the dog recognize that what they Just did in that moment was better than The one that they did when they got Kibble so that you can kind of um Evaluate or you can help the dog Separate the levels of achievement by The type of reaction they get from you Or the level of the reward that they get
From you um so that’s one way that you Can use it but of course you can use it In higher distracting environments or For harder exercises so we often Recommend to our students for like Walking and recalls use you know a Higher value food than you would use for Stays for example because they’re a Little calmer so you can play around With the values of food to match Whatever you’re working on in that Moment However there may come a time when You’re training and this is so important When we’re talking about focus getting More focused outside when your dog is Just completely oblivious i actually had This happen to me on tuesday night okay Great first time let’s let’s talk about That why that’s important i was very Frustrated well this is an important Learning moment and i think a lot of the Uh you know a lot of uh People joining us here on the train Station would think like well you know He just doesn’t like food or like oh he Likes this at home but there’s a moment In your training you need to identify And that’ll better prepare you for Future training yep yep so i was in the Agility arena the other night um my Friend and i were training the she is a Puppy and i have a puppy so we were Doing some puppy stuff and uh my i was
When we weren’t training our puppy the Other person was working on some control And making the dog lie quietly while the Other dog was training so they were Learning some manners well my puppy has Decided that he really likes to do Agility mind you they’re doing very Basic basic things not really agility at This point um he likes being in the Arena he likes to do anything that Involves doing anything because it’s fun But the friend that i was training with Is almost as squeaky and squawky as i am When she trains and as soon as she would Praise her puppy Five would break his down position and He would barge forward and squeal with Excitement and i had really high value Pieces of food in my hands and uh he Couldn’t care less because he was like i Want to go and play with that excitement So luckily our arena is very large and i Was i don’t know 20 feet in the Beginning and i said i’m sorry ange I have to go to the other side of the Arena and i backed up like about 50 or 60 feet and that was the point where he Was actually able to have the Distraction he was still seeing it he Still knew it was there but it wasn’t Like so close to him that he actually Could look at the distraction and then Check in with me and i was able to Reward him so i had to to to separate
The distraction and make the excitement A little bit lower by removing myself Not completely but just a little bit so I was able to get success and then we Both talked about it as we practice Again i’m gonna go a little closer or Maybe i’ll have him go closer when she’s Working on something that involves less Cheering so that he’s not as excited so You know that’s exactly this is exactly The situation we’re talking about i had High value food i also had a toy but in That moment the thing that was happening In front of him was more exciting to him Than listening to me and getting treats And getting toys because he’s a six Month old puppy and he’s learning so Rather than i was frustrated but because I was like he’s usually perfect angel to Be honest with you he is really such a Great puppy but i was like okay you’re Six months and you’re growing and you’ve Now decided that this is fun and i had To work through it a little bit so i was Able to just reevaluate and get success So it’s important that you know how to Make good decisions so that that Frustration can turn into okay i’m a bit Further away but i have i’m having a win And then my goal is to progress on this As the weeks go forward yeah and it’s Really interesting because the more dogs We see You start to recognize that if you think
Of it as a concentric circle and In the widest part of the circle your Dog is absolutely going to be successful That’s that ring we talked about this in A couple of our videos and then in that Inner circle so if there’s three Circuits that inner circle there is a Yellow zone and think of it like a Bullseye there’s like a yellow zone Where your dog may be successful but Maybe not it’s a little bit questionable And then in the center is the red zone And in the center you are absolutely Going to fail your dog has no Possibility of being correct they’re Just going to struggle so you need to Figure out how you can work between that Green zone and that yellow zone so that You’re being successful and what you Start to see is that red zone starts to Shrink so cale mentioned getting Distance moving away from that Distraction moving away from whatever The thing is that your dog is absolutely Excited about here’s why Because when you get back to a point Where you can reinforce your dog with Food or maybe in some cases it’s a toy Yeah i mean it’s something what you’re What you want is for them to perform a Behavior that you’re asking for and once You get that you know you’re starting to Make some ground here but the nice part Is if you can get in a reward and the
Great part about food is it innervates a Different part of their brain and it Settles them down just a little bit it Brings them back just a little bit and Then you can start to get closer and Closer now this might not be in one Training session maybe you go to the Park and your dog is completely uh Beyond uh any opportunity to focus you Can’t have them listen it’s just not Going to happen so you’re going to find It find some distance and maybe it’s on The walk there where they can be Successful and then you’re going to Start to work your way in from there but What you will notice is that if you do This enough and you recognize where Those stages are with your dog’s Learning and their understanding that Center zone is going to shrink you’re Going to start to see your dog check in With you now they’re going to be more Bitable they’ll listen better you’re Going to start to have a little better Focus a bit at a time i’m actually going To go i hear the dogs sparking just at The train station for a second is there Anything else you want to add to that High value food idea Um or maybe you can answer a question in The chat yep i can’t i was actually just Say the last the last little note there I thought was pretty good um if you Can’t change location you can also
Change time of day so if it’s like a Walking issue or a recall issue Try to set your dog up so that you’re Going at quieter places or quieter times Of the day sorry um or less busy places So that things are a little bit easier That way Someone says cannot believe it kale Frustrated yeah um it is a little bit Frustrating when and everybody’s Everybody’s gonna have that moment from Time to time but it is really important That you’re not going to take your Frustration out on the dog i was Frustrated because my perfect little Angel puppy wasn’t being so perfect Anymore but also i also know that that’s Sort of the The realistic The realisticness of of what happened so Not a big deal yeah um that that’s Important and that’s probably something People couldn’t imagine like how could You possibly be frustrated it happens Dog training that happens we did a uh Podcast not that long ago myself and Instructor robbie and instructor shannon Did a podcast talking about that so uh That might be good for a lot of you guys To check out talking about your mental Space and uh how it can really set you Back if you aren’t planning the right Way if you don’t know what to do when You get frustrated but these things
Happen you know this is dog training It’s a very dynamic experience Especially when it comes to getting Focused outside you know if you fail i Think you need to understand that when You’re training dogs there are very few Problems That can be solved with quick fixes and Unfortunately that’s what a lot of People want they want just that thing or That that treat or that Training equipment or that trick that Just solves everything like that and That’s just not how dogs work or learn When you have issues like pulling on a Leash or not listening or running away And not coming when they’re called or Biting or whatever the situation is Nipping and biting they’re not quick Fixes because sometimes you can work on This problem but because you’re letting That that that and that problem go well You’re never going to fix this one There’s everything is all Sort of joined together which is why Training your dog is so important Because sometimes when you improve this Area This area over here magically solves Itself because there’s just more Relationship and respect and stuff built From the dog so there are no quick fixes It is a lot of work but when you put the Work in you end up building a stronger
Relationship with your dog and then it’s So much more enjoyable on the end Absolutely totally we need to talk a Little bit about uh Training uh skills in motion because a Lot of you guys i’ve seen especially in The comment section or from uh you know Uh emails and things that we get people Really struggle with something like Walking on leash or when they’re like Out working on an exercise like response To name or recall and um they seem to People seem to think it’s all about the Food i know we talked about food not Fixing everything but you’re might be Forgetting the one of the most important Parts Elements of your walking on leash Training and uh that is Motion the value that motion has whether It is your response to name your recall Your walking on leash um and i think a Big struggle that a lot of people have Is that they’re thinking about all these Things they’re thinking about okay Reward the dog here keep my leash loose Oh here comes somebody and they’re not Thinking about big picture why is the Dog eating stuff off the ground why is My dog constantly Distracted by everything and i’ll tell You motion your emotion can make a huge Difference with that Dogs really naturally respond to motion
Because they’re masters of body language And um One of the greatest examples i can think Of is like a recall actually because a Lot of times when dogs don’t come when They’re called or they’re not listening A person’s natural reaction is to run After the dog and to to grab them and to Get a hold of them this is a good thing And when you run towards them and maybe You’ve had this situation happen with Your own dog when you start to to go Towards your dog to get that thing that They’ve stolen off the countertop or You’re trying to get a hold of them to Get control what do they do well they Take off and they run because they’re Trying to get you to chase them because That puts them in the the leader Position and that puts you in the Follower position and also it’s a whole Heck of a lot of fun to run around and Get chased after um and They know that if they can move away From you or they can dodge the length of Your arm or whatever it might be that You can’t get control of them and that Allows them to sort of continue being Successful whatever their current Mission is um however Dogs love to chase so if you’re trying To teach your dog to come when they’re Called or bring a toy back to you or Whatever it might be if you turn and run
The other direction chances are most Dogs can’t help themselves they’ll stop And sort of say where are you going and They’ll naturally follow after you now They might not come right in at that Point because some dogs have learned Very well to avoid you and that takes Training but the anat the initial Response of chase all dogs do that well They can’t help themselves especially if You have a dog somebody said i think i Read somewhere the dog really likes to Chase birds so if that dog has high Chase drive you need to be incorporating Motion into your training so that They’re not chasing birds or leaves or Whatever they are they’re chasing you um And that’s obviously going to go along With Voice which i know we’re going to get to A little bit later but motion’s really Important uh back to um Walking as you said i’d say that the Biggest critique i have uh with people When i’m trying to teach them to get Their dog to walk say i’ll walk so Slow like like a snail and the dog’s Like you’re so boring and they’re Sniffing and they’re doing this and then You know i’ll say walk faster like let’s Go like like you’re late for something And as soon as they pick up the pace and They have a little bit more animation And energy to their movement the dogs
Are like whoa where are you going and Again they are just automatically more Attentive and more engaged in their Person so motion is really really really Important um Dogs work in opposition so if you want Your dog to move towards you you need to Move away from them if you end up moving Towards your dog they’re gonna move away From you again you don’t need to teach These things these are just natural Responses that dogs um that dogs give You yeah absolutely it’s been bred into Dogs yeah and um This is so important is there’s like That Middle ground so if you feel like your Dog’s constantly getting distracted and They’re sniffing and picking things up Off the ground or they are just not Checking in with you then you probably Need to speed up a little bit but if Your dog is like through the roof Excited and they’re you know bouncing And being a complete goofball you might Be going too fast so figuring out that Middle the right speed for your dog when It comes to walking unleashing you Mentioned um I just become a trainer at mccann’s And i was out in uh snowboarding in uh One of the one of the mountains in bc And we were in the village and a husky Of course um got loose in the village
And people were chasing at that like Trying to chase him down trying to Corner him or her whatever um and i was About 30 feet away or something like That and i made a funny noise like hey You’re like really funny sound of some Kind and i ran away because i i’d seen This i’d seen how this worked and there He’s coming after me he’s oh i can’t Wait to get to you and then he came to Me and i ended up to you know i was the Hero so i mean we’re just getting used To that but ken’s a husky catcher but But in reality he’s a husky can’t catch Him but in reality it’s because i Recognized that the dog was having a Ball staying away from all of these People What what he needed was something or Someone to chase he was just so high and Excited so uh long story short um When might this be beneficial for you Your recall your response to name and I’m not talking about you know doing the 40 yard dash i’m talking maybe response Name it’s like four feet Back up a couple steps sometimes yeah Absolutely take advantage of that Remember especially when we’re outside There’s so many things competing for Your dog’s attention so from the moment You give them that cue whatever it is uh Name come whatever to the point where They get to you for some kind of reward
You need to make sure that they don’t Get distracted that they don’t lose Interest that they stay focused on you So that motion is a great way to do that As kale had eluded to the second best Thing that you can use Maybe I mean this is arguable whether it’s Motion or voice i was just going to say With um with the motion one of the Things that we really like to do is like Practice restraint recalls which is Literally All about motion yeah um and i was going To show them the puppy tug but i’ve Already packed it because i’m going away To a competition this weekend and i’ve Packed my puppy tonight because i’m Taking this away yeah i’m taking five With me yeah um but it’s a really really Long tug it’s like four feet long so it Can dangle on the ground as you’re Running and you basically just take off And call the puppy’s name or say come or Whatever command recall command you’re Working on and dangle the the long tug Behind you and then the puppies chase After and grab and tug and it’s so much Fun and it tires them out so much but That’s all based on the premise of we Have to be careful how much we mentioned The puppy tug because i think that we Only have like two or three left in Stock oh i mean they suck like you don’t
Want one they’re all in our office staff Yeah i’m gonna get a bunch of angry Complaints but they’re not plus they’re Available I’m sorry i’m sorry peggy and tammy they Are available at mccann dogs store if You want uh if there’s anything left we I think we do have more on the way in a Little bit so good yeah um yeah Using a tug toy can be really valuable We’re gonna talk a little bit about toys Maybe in their use we’ll see uh in Training but they can be hugely helpful For your focus outdoors can i just Answer this real quick yes Uh says do you think you will post video About your journey to and at the world Of julie open yes absolutely i have been Horrible about my agility um instagram Page i suffered very bad from jet lag When i got home and then basically i Just went right back to work so i have So many videos and pictures and amazing Stories stories to share About my trip we’re gonna do a podcast About it so it’s coming i apologize it Should have been right away when i got Home something that you don’t talk about Is you don’t even have to leave the Platform you could go over to mccann Dogs agility and Check in because you’ll probably post Stuff there won’t you as well well i Posted basically the whole beginning of
My trip there and then once the Competition started i stu i didn’t look At my phone it was on the instagram or The youtube page uh no not on my youtube Page on instagram okay yeah kail also Has a youtube channel i do yes yeah i Post their irregularly not like mccann Dogs youtube but um i post on if you’re Looking for agility stuff i post on my Agility instagram page All the time almost daily we used to do A live over there didn’t we I now do it though on for patreon right That’s true yeah what was that called After hours agility yeah yeah it was fun Those are fun uh sessions using your Voice your voice is valuable um And this is really important for those Of you who are struggling to stop using Food uh be aware uh how the the power That your voice has and i’m going to Speak to those of you in the audience Who are male because as an instructor Some of the toughest getting close Some of the toughest coaching that i’ve Had to do is encourage guys to come out Of their shells a little bit and it Doesn’t have to be bubbly and whatever You know make you feel uncomfortable but It should be enough to get your dog’s Attention and this was something when You say be more fun what should they do Right well whatever whatever that might Be whatever connects you to your dog
Maybe it’s like you get gruff and Grumbly and whatever but maybe you know Whatever whatev you use that you use Your voice that’s the thing that can Connect to your dog that has nothing to Do with treats and uh It’s what bridges the gap between Rewards when people You know say that sometimes and people Be like oh yeah okay that makes sense so That you don’t have to constantly have Food on the dog’s nose if you can Bridge that time by using your voice That will give you more focus maybe you Here’s a great example and i love this One because i’ve seen it be effective uh With euchre it was effective mm-hmm Maybe you’ve seen our series with euchre From uh last year or It’s two years ago where that was the Dog name euchre not the card game that’s Right yeah the puppy euchre Is using your voice before your dog gets Fixated or focused or distracted by that Other thing and whether that’s a dog or Person or a car or a leaf or a squirrel It doesn’t matter what the thing is but By using your voice it allows you to get That attention and reward or reinforce Your dog so this is where you know the Focus starts starts to fall apart is People wait too long and they’re out There walking with their dog and maybe They understand that you know they have
A decent Level of reward value they’ve been Working hard to understand that there Are big challenges outside so i’m going To work a little bit harder maybe their Motion’s great but they’re not saying Anything because they see that Distraction and they think uh oh what’s Going to happen panic and then they then They’re quiet absolutely yeah um let’s Talk about using your voice you know uh That you might use your voice with the Puppy right now in your training yeah um And actually because i use so much voice And animation and stuff that’s back to My story before about when five was Really excited by my friend making that Noise he now associates he actually gets Excited if i’m watching a video of like Me running beeline on my phone in Agility he just perks up because he can Hear me like shouting and cheering and Encouraging so he’s associating that That sound with doing something fun and Right away he’s like runs over he’s like Okay mom like let’s do something like he He’s ready to do something because he’s So used to that um but it is really Really important i see this all the time In our classes like when we do our Recalls especially if we are ever doing Like one dog at a time and we have like A couple people in the class that are Really animated they call their dog to
Come and then all the other students Dogs want to like run to that person as Well Because not because they know the person But because the sound of the recall is Just so exciting um but the other thing Is important that That you know about your voice is that You can um Tailor your voice to Um I kind of said this about the food and The level of reward that you use you can Also use um praise the same way so you Can um obviously guess is really Important but there’s difference between Yes and yes You know and dogs know the difference They know like you’re really excited You’re really happy with something um But if you’re sort of a bit monotone With the dog and you know not very Encouraging a lot of dogs are just Naturally distracted uh or attracted i Meant to say by you know exciting things That are going on so if you’re sort of a Bump on a log and you’re not very Exciting the dog’s going to tune you out And they’re going to go elsewhere but Remember you don’t have to have this High squeaky bubbly voice like ken said And you don’t have to use all this crazy Voice forever for their whole life That’s also really important to
Understand yeah because people i don’t Want my dog to listen when i you know Sound all squeaky and that’s not what We’re saying we’re saying that you’re Going to use it to your advantage when It’s going to be helpful to you and then You’re going to wean off of that as time Goes on so you have to remember that What you do in the training phase is not What you do for the rest of your dog’s Life you have to put in extra work extra Effort during the training phase and so You get all the hard work done and then You get to coast for a little bit and Then you could hit a little bump in the Road later on and you might have to Tweak a few things and then you’re going To coast for a bit because dogs aren’t Robots they’re animals and people are Inconsistent often so we have to kind of Go back and do things but it’s not a Forever thing but You integrating tone of voice and and Excitement uh with your voice can make a World of difference especially if you Have a dog that’s lacking motivation or Maybe the opposite if you have a dog That’s really high-minded maybe speaking To them in a calmer voice because Sometimes people get so buzzed when how They’re talking to their dog because They’re frustrated that the dog just Ends up getting more excited sometimes You should say good and calm so you can
Use your voice accordingly you know what There’s one way that you can be sure That you’re getting good information and You’ll know What kind of information to be giving Your dog and that is if you come train With us oh look i’m not in the thing Yeah Um life skills yeah life skills program So yeah so we do have a couple online Programs like we mentioned before i saw A lot of people asking about that in the Chat so we have a couple programs but if You have a dog that is uh five months And older um you might be interested in Our course called life skills it is um a Course that works on all of the basics That you need to have a dog that you can Integrate into your family very easily Walking on leash recalls manners around People Um More attention around distractions all Of those types of things but the best Thing about the program is there’s lots Of great very Excellent videos to watch that are Not on our youtube channel their their Specific content for this but the the Best thing is the access to the support That you get so because we have students All over the world we have 24-hour Support basically if you have a problem Or you’re having a breakdown or your
Dog’s being a total turkey you can um You can message one of the instructors And we can walk you through it and we Really truly get to know and your dog Know you and your dog very well which Means we get to give you personalized Information for you and your specific Dog because um you know what we put out On youtube is absolutely incredible but It’s sort of for the general the general Stuff and it’s only like a tiny bit of The information where in our programs we Have an opportunity to take four months With you and really teach you about what You need to do help you problem solve we Have weekly um zoom calls that we do With our students every single week There’s tons of face-to-face interaction Much more than you would expect being an Online course uh lynne belsey in claudia S step uh I forgot to bring this tutor out earlier In the show And uh they dropped two super chats now I see claudia’s dropped her question She asks i’m getting my puppy next week Since she won’t be able to walk with me For a while could i put her in a front Backpack and take her with me on walks i Don’t know that i’ve ever heard that Question before no Question what’s your opinion there I don’t know i don’t want to immediately Say yeah that’s okay and i don’t want to
Immediately say No that’s not a good idea here’s here’s What’s going through my mind um It really depends on the puppy so if you Have a puppy that is going to be fairly Confident and like say for example your Puppies in the backpack and like a big Truck goes by and like makes really loud Noises or um that type of thing you Still have to be you still have to be Aware of like environment that’s around You i like the idea because you’re not Going to be rehearsing the dog uh Walking poorly also if a baby puppy who Probably can’t go for super long walks Physically at that point so for that It’s good um but i would just be aware So i’m not going to give you a yay or an A But i’m going to say be aware of the Situation um and just make sure that the Dog is comfortable and happy in the Backpack and that you’re not having a Dog that’s a little bit worried or Overwhelmed if you’re not seeing those Types of behaviors then i think it’s Probably um okay um but if you think That the dog is feeling a little bit Overwhelmed or uncomfortable then i Might say leave the puppy at home in the Crate and you go for your lovely walk And hopefully you guys can do it Together in harmony one day Lynn uh teach your puppy to be in the
Backpack before you take them on a walk One of them one of our online students i Love the zoom calls it’s my favorite day Of the week yay They’re so fun um we have super chats From lynn and tanya as well so guys lynn And tony make sure you drop your Question in the chat and we can answer Them we’ll keep our um we’ll keep our uh Moderators keeping a close eye on that Um i don’t want to go too far before you Claudia says i’m in a very quiet Neighborhood with no traffic going by Perfect then that might work out great For you claudia it’s nice great yeah you Do have to be quite careful with a puppy At that age especially if you’re not Totally you kind of want them to think That the world is full of sunshine and Roses and Yeah yeah just just be just be mindful Yeah um okay let’s get to our next point We actually have a bonus for you guys so This is we’re gonna do number five but Then we’re gonna talk a little bit about The bonus which is going to give you a Different angle for getting some focus Outside but the bone or the number five Thing that we need to talk about Finish with a motivated dog i don’t know How many people i’ve seen who tell me That especially people like i uh i’ve Been A firefighter for nearly 25 years now
And guys at the fire hallways tell me The things and i’m just like oh okay They tell me like the stuff they do with Their dogs and those ones and that’s When you wish that you didn’t know Anything about dogs so you could Actually enjoy their story that’s right That’s right um but they’ll say like oh Yeah my dog does great and then he just Gets bored of it and won’t bring the Ball back he’s lazy yeah yeah he just Gets lazy or he’s just tired tired of Coming back to me well he is tired of Coming back to you so stop playing Because you think that’s too that’s Right so let’s talk about finishing with A motivated dog and why that’s important Why we need to need to leave them Wanting more yeah we sort of joke about Um it with like retrieving because That’s sort of an easy thing to To understand and sort of visualize in Your mind but it really goes with Anything Some dogs especially puppies they’re Young so they don’t necessarily have a Long a lot of work ethic at this point They’re still developing that they don’t Necessarily have a lot uh like a long Attention span as well uh because They’re really young and sometimes what Happens is they start off great and then Towards the end of the the training Session you think why why are they
Getting worse instead of getting better And it’s because you’ve sort of just You’ve worked them a little bit too long Think about like if you um write like a Big math test or something like that Think about how tired you are by the end Because you’re thinking and you’re Focused so much and that can literally Happen to our animals when we’re Training them as well they can get they Can get mentally tired even though they Might not be physically tired so we want To be mindful of that because when a dog Is tired You could be teaching them the most Amazing things but it is not going in The brain in fact there has been studies That say it’s much better to train your Dog for a short period of time break Come back and do that exact same thing Again and the dog will almost always Have a Do better the second session because They almost have an opportunity to go And like kind of sit with it for a Little bit let it sink in just kind of Let their brain relax and then when you Go back the dog says hmm this is Familiar we’ve already done this before I bet you’re gonna do this and then you Can really see the wheels start to turn So short periods are much better and to Quit while you’re ahead is saying is so So applicable to dog training um because
What you wanna what we’re all about in Our training getting our dogs to be Motivated to do what we want we never Want our dogs to go oh man i have to Come to you oh man i have to go on a Walk i hate this that’s the essence of The mccann method Motivation absolutely we want your dog To want to listen to you to say i cannot Wait for that word come to come out of Your mouth because that’s so much fun And one of the ways that we’re able to Establish this is by building so much Excitement and value for that exercise And then quitting well while the it’s Still going hot yeah well the dog says Oh i you know when they look like they Could do one more that’s when you stop That’s when you change directions that’s When you change gears so your dog says Oh man i wish i could have done that so The next time they do it you you sort of Leave you you lead with a little bit More excitement and every dog is really Different you know i wish i could say For this dog you could do five Repetitions it doesn’t work that way a Lot of it has to do with breed or Temperament or whether it’s hot outside Or you know whether they just ate or Whatever there’s lots of things but you Need to learn that about your dog and Then as time goes on you can build uh More um
Sort of like more endurance and things Onto it they can get better with it they Can train longer as they get older but It’s something you need to be mindful of Training journals are really helpful for This um pay attention to um you know how Long you’re training actually again this Literally happened to me the other day i Was training b And i towards the end of my training Session i thought to myself gosh she Feels tired like is she hurt is Something wrong like what’s wrong with Her and i actually literally messaged You and i was like i think something was Wrong with b and then i went back and Watched my video to see if she looked Sore and i had been training her for Like seven and a half minutes on an Agility course i was stopping and Rewarding her and taking breaks but i Thought For a dog and a human that’s jet-lagged I feel like that’s maybe too much time She was literally just tired and she Needed to have a break so pay attention To those types of things because they Can make a big difference uh three to One to me it’s like leaving them wanting A bit more of cake yeah yeah Who doesn’t want that i constantly i Mean that sounds like a horrible Situation but it certainly would leave You wanting more uh lynn belzy with the
10 super chat Thank you lin Lin asks my shih tzu is a true socialite Loves people and uh warms to them when They approach however very occasionally You’ll break into a non-stop bark at Someone out of the blue and it’s so Embarrassing help um so it would be Interesting to know what the Cause Yeah what the things leading up to is it Non-stop barking because the dog’s Afraid is it nonstop barking because the Dog’s overly excited the um how we would Answer that really and maybe you don’t Know maybe you don’t know lynn um what The barking’s coming from um either way I guess you’re sort of going to address It in a similar manner um but you kind Of need to know why the barking’s Happening because you can kind of adjust What you do but um What i would do when the dog does that Is get the dog into a control position i Think ken spoke about the control Position a lot earlier in the chat or in In our presentation here but um Basically you would get the dog in Sitting at your left hand side it would Be really important that your dog learns To do this prior to being in this Situation so the dog understands that When they’re sitting at your left-hand Side their job is to sit on a loose
Leash and not bark and not jump and and You know not bite or do any of those Things just to sit and be calm with you It’s sort of like a control position That we use with our dogs when we need To kind of get their mind a little bit Settled um turning away is also really Helpful as well Changing directions and removing the dog Getting them further away from the Distraction sliding your left hand on The leash and redirecting the dog from There And then try to find an opportunity or a Threshold where you’re at a distance Where your dog can be calm so that you Have an opportunity to then reinforce The dog positively so it’s not just Don’t do that it’s don’t do that but Here’s what i would like for you to do Instead uh tanya haywood Thank you for the super chat i’m having A hard time Having a hard time for my pup listening To my voice uh my voice doesn’t move my Door if i’m going outdoors in the Backyard for her potty or in the Driveway she doesn’t listen six months Old pitbull okay let’s talk about this Let’s talk about especially potty times Because this is a lot of Times when people start to lose All their commands lose value because They think to themselves okay well i’m
Just going to let my dog go outside into The backyard or into whatever the area Is and they Don’t maintain the high standard of Response of expectation and a lot of People really water down their dog’s Name so If you are going if your dog especially At this point while you’re having Problems there will there may come a Time when you’ll be Able to let your dog out in these Situations and they don’t have to be on A leash but right now your dog Absolutely needs to be on a leash or on A long line or some way for you to have A little bit more control Then you’re going to go out there with Them and you’re going to work on some of These exercises but what you aren’t Going to do is shout from the door and Not get a response you’re going to That would be setting your dog up to Have an opportunity to ignore you yeah So take these exercises which you could Do later on down the road when your Dog’s trained When they’re not trained yeah this is When you’re going to be in training mode You’re going to be thinking about Training it’s not testing time so you’re Going to go out there and you’re going To work on this exercise you’re going to Go out there maybe after your dog has
Gone potty every single time you take Your dog out to pee or poop afterward i Want you to work three four five Response to names take some treats out With you go out there work on this skill And maybe you can over time you can Build a little bit more distance and Maybe you can work on different areas Where on the driveway in the yard or at The park whatever I want you to think about that think About connecting the idea that every Time this dog goes out for that to go Appear for potty that you’re going to Work on that skill but do not Ask them to listen without any Follow-through you know if they uh if Your dog isn’t listening you need to do Something about it because they’re in Training mode Good question erica one of our heart dog Supporters i’ve had my 10 week old puppy For 10 days now every time every time For naps i still need to physically put Her in her crate when will she start why Don’t you start going in when asked we Are training in your room Um 10 weeks old really little at this point You need a few more weeks of of teaching The puppy to go in um Being able having to physically put your Puppy in the crate is really not that Big of a deal at that point you’re gonna
Do that but in addition just like you Would take time to teach your puppy to Sit or lie down or shake a paw you’re Gonna teach your puppy in your room by Using some food rewards you use that Command throw some treats into the back Of the crate let your puppy go in get The treats and then let them come back Out again and do that you know 5 6 7 10 12 20 times in a row until your dog Starts to put together the in your room Means go into the crate a lot of dogs Won’t learn that if you say the command And then physically put them in because The dog’s not doing it themselves you’re Doing it for them so you need to Actually take time to teach it Individually My favorite time to teach the dog to go Into the crate is every time they get Breakfast and um Well at that age you might even be doing Breakfast lunch and dinner but even five To this you know he’s six months old he Still eats his meals in his crate and When i put the kibble in the bowl put a Little bit of water on top and i say in Your crate and he runs into his crate And gets his food because that’s the Rehearsal um and i put him in the crate And close the door um and then usually He’ll eat and then have a little nap After um that’s what we’ve been doing For months so you’re very very early in
The stages only 10 weeks old so you have Just a lot of repetitions ahead of you Yeah and But make it fun I also i know a lot of people are Looking for like well at 12 weeks that’s Going to start happening but you’re Going gonna start to notice your puppy Offering to do this once in a while and Yeah and especially when you uh you know Start to feed your puppy in there as Soon as you get the food ready you’ll Notice that you’re probably gonna start Going to that position and you can Appraise and reward them for that um Christiana fagan She dropped a super chat and then she Dropped a super sticker look at this Little guy Having fun uh she said no question at The moment but getting a coffee cream in A couple of weeks well congratulations On your new four-legged family member Christiana Um we need to talk about the bonus i i Told these guys we’re gonna drop the Bonus so we need to talk about the bonus When it comes to Uh getting more focus outside Using toys in your training can make a Huge difference for a lot for a lot of Uh dog owners and even if you don’t have A super uh toy motivated dog right now You may discover that uh working on some
Of these exercises indoors and like the Game of tug which think about this just Like high level The game of tug only happens between you And your dog and this interactive thing Whatever it is maybe it’s like one of Our fuzzy ball tugs or maybe it’s a You know our treat tug pouch if you have A food motivate dog or tree tug pouch is Great for that or maybe you have some Other interactive toy of some kind but The beauty of this game is that it Involves you these aren’t chew toys We’re talking about interactive Experiences when you’re outside what if The most fun thing your dog could be Doing is having a fun game a tug with You all of the distractions in the world Are going on around you but they can’t Get enough of having a big game of tug a Lot of people think that playing tug With their dog leads to like possess Possession issues and uh what are some Of the other things they’re missing out On a lot of fun right absolutely i i Play tug with five every single day Multiple times a day it’s one of my main Forms of reward for him because he loves It so much and it just is a great way to Like tire him out but it’s always done With control he knows not to grab the Toy until i give him permission he knows He needs to give the toy up when i ask Him to so it actually elevates my
Leadership in a really Fun Way that we can do together great great Leadership moment i mean the leadership Is huge the idea that your dog is so Focused on you and the toy and uh the Out like those are such great things um What about a dog that’s not super Hyper motivated to play tug they finally Get a little bit interested a little bit Engaged how are you gonna like build a Little bit of that toy drive up for Those people there’s a couple things you Can do number one you mentioned this um Just before you got into your thick of Things there but if you have a dog That’s not super excited about toys Don’t give them all the access to the Toys keep them special they have toys All the time whenever they want to then You know the grass is always greener on The other side so if they get toys all The time and just access to them it’s They’re just not excited you need Exciting you need to have things that Are special um the other thing that i Would do with dogs that are not that Into toys is i would actually play tug And let them win which seems very like a A very strange thing to say because you Know We want to have rules and we want to Follow through but if you have a dog That’s not really that into it i would
Spend a lot of time letting them win and Then making them feel like super special Oh what do you have and like tickle them And push them away and clap your hands And see if you can get them to engage With your hands and make a lot of fun Fun be very playful The type of toy that you use can be Really important maybe something that’s A little soft and fluffy and easy to Bite um hippie shake we have a little Toy poodle and she was a little bit Apprehensive to tug in the early stages And so We used toys that we could put food Inside of um so that when she would uh Tug on the toy i could open up velcro or Unzip and give her a couple pieces of Food and she started to figure out when I tug on that thing mom gives me a Reward which was her ultimate um Ultimate goal and then she was able to Put things together but sometimes you Have to to work at it a little bit but It really is worth it because when You’re training a dog to have more than One um Um What’s the word To not just be stuck using treats all The time give your voice yeah some some Uh alternatives to just food i guess you Could say options but that seems too Simple to say
But you want to be able to have lots of Options to reward your dogs you’re not Just using treats all of the time number One your dog will probably become a Blimp if all you’re doing is just Treating treating treating but treats Are good voice is excellent toys are Great sometimes sometimes if my dog does Something really well i literally use All three i praise i give a couple Treats and then i play tug so you can Really um You can really use these types of things To to help you know Be clear with your with your Expectations and what you like from your Dog um Also or Uh Maybe what’s even bigger is that some Exercises do so much better when it Comes to interacting with toys so for Example if you want your dog to have Tons of drive responding to their name Coming back to you but break out the toy The game ends they’re the whole way that They’re coming in they’re getting more And more excited that all of us when They get there you’re gonna have a big Game of tug the recall what a great way To build motivation and drive and these Are the two skills that you absolutely Need to have to get off leash to get More focus you have to have these one
Rock solid and then you know maybe one’s A little bit you know not as good but You have to have this skill you must be Able to call your dog back off of a Distraction to call your dog back when You want them when you want to you know Maybe there’s some Weirdo hiking this is a long time ago We were out hiking somewhere and we Heard a vehicle a four-wheeler coming up And we had seven dogs maybe eight at the Time we had them all come out we called Them back to us and we asked them to lie Down everybody lied down and then this Four-wheeler went driving by um but you Know you have to have that kind of Control if you have any expectation of Getting out going off hippie shake i Asked her to jump in my arms that’s Right that’s right Too little to be on the floor uh on the Ground with the four-wheeler around Um What else han Um So um Oh it’s because you can make it a Surprise that’s the other thing oh yeah That’s a good that’s a great tip Um yeah so the surprise is really fun Too so we uh we’ll do this a lot in some Of our advanced training especially Where we’ll do like a surprise reward so Um we’ll have like a toy um tucked up
Like behind our sweatshirts or somewhere Where the dog can’t see it we’ll call The dog and we’ll wait till the dog Almost gets to us and then we’ll pull The toy out as sort of like an extra Surprise because sometimes what will Happen is if you’re using a lot of toys But you’re sort of advertising to the Dog that you have the toy ahead of time They Come beautifully when they see that you Have the toy but then they’ll look and Say well you have the toy there well i’m Not going to listen so if you can hide It away and it becomes unpredictable as To whether you have it or not you have a Dog that sort of runs with that Anticipation of you pulling out that Reward so having that reward you could Use with food too but with the toy if You make it more of a surprise at the End that can really help um work on the Reliability and not have the dog become Dependent on whatever that thing is You’re using as your reward huge hello To our friend jess from gone to the snow Dogs jessica yes hey friends miss Eleanor just graduated intermediate dog Training today well congratulations we Uh we like watching uh eleanor go Through the the paces over on gun of the Snow dogs and uh we’re super pumped that You guys are making such uh great Strides forward it’s so nice having a
