Interesting place just off of the south Uh the west coast i think of england i Think that’s where it was um and we had People joining us from there it was very Cool i didn’t even know it existed That’s it but uh yeah you know people Are joining us from this tiny i wish i Knew it i feel like island isn’t the Right word but anyway Um so let us know and uh i get to do my Romper room moment let’s talk for a Second while people are letting us uh Know what’s where they’re from talk for A second about Big picture uh the impact that mistakes Can make Instead of like giving good information So you know So um we’re going to be referring to uh The mccann method a lot tonight because It’s the way that we train dogs and One of the things that we really find Makes a huge difference is if in the Early stages of your dog’s training you Can set your dog up to do Whatever you want them to do Successfully first and the reason why we Wanted to talk about um Three Important steps is we find that these Steps among other things are things that Sometimes people miss and then that can Really sort of off track their their Training and then you end up having to
To fix everything so um it’s really Important that when you’re training a Dog that you’re Trying to set your dog up And that could be through management That could be through the relationship Building it could be through the Training setting your dog up so that They’re more likely to make a great Choice or to do a behavior correctly Rather than putting them in a situation And having to say oh you’re wrong nope i Don’t like that stop that don’t do this That’s really not the sole information Or the um The larger percentage of information That we want to give our dogs we really Want to be mostly you’re right and hey i Don’t like this this is what you Shouldn’t do so you know we don’t want To just It’s not that the world’s going to be Full of sunshine or roses all the time That is not what dog training looks like There’s going to be lots of frustrations And lots of mistakes and things like That but sometimes if you know how to Rearrange yourself and um put your dog In different situations or make better Choices or you know focus on some of the Steps that we’re going to be talking About tonight you’ll find that there’s Less frustration there’s more like wow My dog has a brain wow my dog had a
Really great choice there because we’re Giving them information in a way that They you know it’s clear and they and They understand it and the reality is That You know everyone wants to know like Well okay well what do i do for my uh Shetland sheepdog when it comes Specifically to jumping up or what about For my um you know i mean you picked the Breed i want to know how to solve this Problem for this specific read and i’ll Tell you It’s every single dog is a little bit Different which is you know why we Approach things the way we do and we Want you to learn the why because when You know the why and a little bit of the How it allows you to make better Decisions that are specific to you and Specific to your dog we’re talking a Little bit about how you can actually Get some support from some of the mccann Dogs trainers in this process but um Before we get there i wanted to mention Uh we’ve got 15 off if you’ve seen a Train station before you’ll know we do Like a flash sale for 24 hours and you Can go to mccanndogs.store and if you Enter train ticket at the checkout for The next 24 hours you’ll get 15 percent Off of our leather leashes which are Beautiful and uh Whatever and a bait pouch and a lot of
People underestimate the value of a bait Pouch until you get to like your first Dog training lesson or until you need to Reward your dog quickly so much more Convenient the moment it’s so it’s so Important I wanted to mention that but before we Went any further i want to say a huge Hello too Uh yvette from marietta california i see La tosa rocky mount virginia waldorf Maryland cleveland ohio melbourne Melbourne victoria australia nice i Learned to say that right i think Peakskill new york walls of gab Tate from detroit michigan oxnard California yvette’s joining us from Jamaica merrillville nice indiana um new York city in jamaica right now yeah Absolutely maximilian brazil new york City with two 12-week old labradoodles Uh rachel’s joining us from whitby uh Deb from plattsville bh bbq from Australia kennesaw georgia scotland Aberdeenshire macduff uh very cool That’s it i’m gonna look that up after Ryan um kyra’s from austin uh keira and I are joining from austin texas awesome Canada ontario tucson arizona the list Goes on awesome thank you guys for Joining us we’re excited to have you Here very very cool Let’s talk about some of the Foundational stuff like when we talk
About three different steps that you Need to take when it comes to fixing a Problem you know we we teach a lot of How to do it right the first time Because we know what they learn first They learn best so if you can give your Dog great information uh it makes the Training process a lot easier however I’ve been in the situation where i gave My dog all of the wrong information in Fact i mentioned deegan a little bit Earlier uh you know she’s quite old now But Many years ago i tried to buy solutions To all of my problems i spent a fortune On like every Caller leash and Thing that might help me through the Training process when what i really Needed was like An expert to tell me like hey yeah to Learn like actually what information she Needed and how she was how she needed to Be given it exactly absolutely um but The part that i missed and the part that I love that you’re here because the part That you get to think about and um you Know establish is an appropriate Foundation and we’re going to talk about This the first step is uh setting a Foundation or fairness of understanding For what you want versus what your dog’s Doing or what you don’t want let’s talk A little bit about you know what that
Might mean in a few different examples Yeah i think what we’re trying to get at Here is that If you want to have that dog that walks Perfectly in a loose leash if you want To have that dog that comes when it Calls When you call it if you want to have the Dog that doesn’t jump up on people i Think sometimes what people forget is That You need to start by building a Foundation so that the dog actually Prefers to make the better choice and The way we do that is by having them Feel that that choice is really Rewarding so i’ll use like Jumping up as an example so if i my dog Thinks that jumping on people is a lot Of fun I need to reverse the Reverse the thinking a little bit and i Need to make my dog think that sitting Beside me on a loose leash is just as Fun but i think what a lot of people Forget is they with the the foundation Versus the fairness is we end up putting Our dogs in situations where it’s almost Impossible for them to make a great Choice so if you’re standing right Beside somebody saying oh what a cute Little puppy can i pet it and they have That squeaky voice and they’re bending Over and your dog’s just like oh my god
Like losing their mind they’re so Excited and you’re trying to get the dog To sit and the leash is tight and it’s Just like a whole disaster It’s not really setting your dog up to Be successful what you really want to do Is really perfect the behavior that You’re hoping to get when there’s less Going on so that there’s a foundation Laid so that your dog says I love this get in exercise or i love This sit at my sit at your side and Looking at you and that needs to be Practiced a lot before we always sort of Jokes you take the show on the road Because too many people what they do is They end up putting their dogs in a Situation And expect their dog to do something That’s really good but they never Trained the dog to do it in the first Place maybe away from that distracting Environment so we end up setting the dog Up to fail without doing it on purpose Or without even knowing but we need to Remember that dogs literally know Nothing when we get them they don’t know How to sit they don’t know what their Name is it’s up to us to teach our dogs All of those things so the foundation That you set is really really important And that needs to be done in some type Of environment where your dog can ace it They can do it so well over and over and
Over again so that when you get in that Harder situation and you say get in and Sit your dog says we’ve done this 100 Times i look they get in and they sit And they look because they have a great Association with it they know that Exercise they think it’s fun they know Great rewards are going to come and now You can use it in a situation where Otherwise your dog might have been wild And crazy and jumping but that Foundation needs to really be in there Um and and done a lot so that the dog Thinks that that’s the best the best Choice the best option it’s not it’s not A natural behavior for a dog just to Walk at your side no it’s not a natural Behavior for dogs they want to go go go Yeah to sit politely in front of new People you know they are uh The natural response is to investigate In the natural response is to explore And do all of these things uh that Aren’t don’t necessarily fit the human World that we live in so it’s our Responsibility to make sure that that Transition period or that introduction To all of these new challenges is one That is Set up for success we talk about this a Lot and believe me uh we see it we see The benefits for from students who um Come in and You can tell you know some of the
Students come in and they are very Clear sure of what they want so they’re Setting their dog up for success all Along the way clear expectations clear Expectations are hugely helpful Especially when it comes to foundation And fairness but um you know what is That foundation does your dog know that They’re not allowed to be outside Digging in the yard you know does your Does your dog know That what have you taught them instead What does your dog know to Walk at your side to sit in uh you know A position while they’re petted have you Worked hard it’s you know sometimes it’s Hard work because especially when you Have a bouncy dog we had um somebody Joining us from uh new york city that Had two labradoodles or a golden doodle Puppies It could be a bouncy breed so you need To make sure that you’re making that Foundation you’re you’re teaching those Puppies That it is so rewarding to choose to sit Rather than jump up that you’ve got to Tip the scales because it’s not Naturally rewarding to just sit and yeah Because that’s what you want of them and It’s important that you guys understand That dogs learn through repetition and That’s whether they’re doing repetition Of the
Correct behavior or an incorrect Behavior that’s what people forget You’ve probably heard dogs learn through Repetition You know it’s a pretty common thing That’s out there but what you need to Remember is that if your dog has gone on 50 walks at this point and 99 of them they’ve been dragging you Around well That’s how they learn to walk now yeah So you know repetition is really Important but it needs like we say Setting the dog up to be successful and If you can’t go for a walk around the The uh neighborhood or wherever you’re Doing maybe you need to change totally What you’re doing because i think Sometimes people say okay set my dog up For success well What does that mean like what does what Do i do to make that happen um you know And you sort of have to have realistic Um A realistic understanding of what your Dog can handle as well so to give you an Example for walking if you’re Sitting in the driveway or standing in The drivewhen you have your dog on a Leash and you have a really hard time Just standing there with nothing going On getting your dog to pay attention to You Well the likelihood of you being able to
Get your dog attention on you while you Go for your walk is is is not really Going to happen so if you can accomplish Getting attention in the driveway while There’s not much motion then maybe you Can move towards being able to walk Around but i think this goes back to What i said before people say oh i have A dog well i need to walk it Well if you’re taking the dog for a walk But you haven’t trained the dog how to Walk The dog’s going to end up making Mistakes and that’s really our fault Because we’re putting the dog in a Scenario where we’re testing them It’s unfair yeah foundation fairness Putting them in a situation when we Actually haven’t trained them how to do It in the first place you need to make Sure you start easy and you’ll have an Idea of whether you can go forward based On your dog’s behavior is your dog Attentive to you is your dog does it Have a loose leash um is it waiting for The next command or is it completely Blowing you off and doesn’t even know That you exist um you know that will Help you to determine whether you’re Ready to put your dog into a um More Challenging life-like situations yeah And You know i think
36 35 percent of you guys are looking at Pulling on leash is like one of the Things you find really strong that you Struggle with and we have dogs we Actually have a video of a specific dog That uh you can’t step out the door you Know as soon as you step out the door That dog would go wild and crazy and Pull at the end of the leash so what’s The foundation if you say like i don’t Know i can’t go anywhere what’s the Foundation for that dog what about Getting a little bit of attention even With just the door open that’s a great Foundation that’s a great starting point Because i’ll tell you if you step out The door and you’re already getting Dragged it’s not a good sign it’s Recoverable it’s recoverable but it’s Not a great starting point you know you Want to start with a little bit of Attention so maybe if you have a wild And crazy little pup at the end of your Leash that can’t help themselves they Just can’t resist the world around them Then a stationary exercise is your Foundation work on that sit at your side Make that rewarding because you don’t Have to worry about motion you don’t Have to worry about new distractions Coming into that environment We talk a lot about um A training Target where the center is you know the
The toughest as things get close it’s Really difficult then there’s like a Concentric circle so like a an outside Ring or an outer ring that’s yellow Where your dog might be successful maybe Not uh and then there’s a green ring Where you know your dog’s going to be Successful You know you can apply that to so many Different skills when it comes to your Dog training so think about the Foundation it’s very important and i Mean it literally is the starting point For all of your exercises and if you can Isolate what that foundational win is For you you can get that tiny win it Allows you to move forward just a little Bit and maybe you’re just not looking at The at the Problem the right way don’t stare too Hard at that problem because maybe There’s a step take two steps back and All of a sudden you’re getting success In a more simple exercise but i’ll tell You those little wins are what’s going To get you that huge huge win at the end And i can tell you i can tell you for a Fact that this works we see it with our Our students dogs over and over and over Again and ken and i have a Five-month-old puppy right now at home And we’re literally he’s right at the Age now where we’re going from like Puppy stuff where we’re like really
Helping him like so much now that he’s Five months and he’s starting to have Some skills we’re starting to put him in Some different scenarios to see if you Know he’s able to handle those things And he constantly pleasantly surprises Us because he recognizes you know the Commands he recognizes the body language When he’s in a new situation he’s like Oh there’s that thing that we’ve done a Whole bunch of times in the living room Or a whole bunch of times in the Driveway it’s the same exercise that i Love that i know and now we’re in a new Place But i also really understand i can look At a situation and go hmm what’s the What’s the rate of success i’m Anticipating here and if i think like i Think he’s going to be okay at this then I can push forward if i’m like there is No way he’s ready for this i don’t put Him in that scenario i don’t set him up Because i know he’s going to fail i make Different choices for him there’s lots Of things that our older dogs get to do That five doesn’t get to do yet because He’s out five alive Yeah five yeah i guess i should say that Five alive is our puppy um that he’s not Allowed to do yet because he’s just not Ready for those challenges he’ll get There one day but we have to sort of Work our way at it rather than just
Doing what’s convenient it would be Really convenient if we could just put Him with the other dogs and do Everything all at once that would be so Convenient for us but i know in the long Run that’s not the best decision for the Dog um welcome and thank you for Supporting uh heart dog Three ky travelers i’m assuming three Kentucky travelers and um quite a Comment from uh len and janey williams Heart dog supporters and i like this Because everyone needs to know this we Haven’t conquered jumping up staying off Yet labrador uh labrador lucy is nine Months old how can we help a girl with Impulse control the important part of This have we missed our window Absolutely not i hope my story as i Talked about earlier we get dogs i Remember dogs when i was teaching grade One a lot that would come in and they’re Like nine years old they were a re-homer Or rescue dog and that owner i knew back In the day yeah that that owner knew That you know the relationship building Was really important in the act of dog Training um Talking about impulse control let’s talk About a foundation you know maybe we can Specific actually you know what let’s Hold this question because i want to i Want to get to the next point and then i Think
It’s going to inform this really well I saw another person mention like well What do i do What do i do it when i’m outside and There’s squirrels everywhere you know How do i get when there’s like Unpredictable distractions well working On that can be hard yeah absolutely Because it’s so unpredictable but Building value when you can get success Maybe you need to go inside and start There so your dog has a foundational Understanding that if i just park my Butt it’s worth it i’m getting something Out of this and then you oh again open The door you know Though it’s really tough with Unpredictable distractions but the next Point that we’re going to talk about is How you can get a you can overcome some Of those yeah i think just before we get Into this you also have to be um aware That You need to be prepared for those things To happen by you know what equipment you Use so maybe when you’re outside that That dog is wearing a long line or or a Leash of some sort maybe not a six-foot Leash in your hand but maybe a long line So that if a squirrel comes out of Nowhere you don’t have a dog that’s Off-leash that doesn’t have a recall That just takes off and gets into a Dangerous situation so um i think that
We assume that people use long lines all Of the time yeah but i think a lot of People just have their dogs off leash Before we would suggest that they do That because when a dog is off leash They have the ability to make all their Own choices and until they’re trained to Really understand that they Like our choices for them that having a Long line or some type of leisure on to Control their freedom can really help With those unpredictable things if i Have a long line in my hand and the Squirrel comes by and my dog goes to Chase it well Now i can stop my dog and if that Happens three or four times well guess What now my dog learns you can’t you Can’t chase squirrels but if i don’t Have a line on or if i’m not ready for Those unpredictable things to happen and The dog gets to chase the squirrel four Or five times well now i have to work Even harder because now my dog’s got a Taste of what chasing a squirrel is like If i’m on it from the beginning they Don’t really learn about those games do You remember at the opening of the show When we talked about you need to you Know you set the dog up for six years You got to set them up for success but You’re also What’s your what do you think your dog’s Natural response is to squirrels running
Around it’s gratifying to them simply The act of chasing them they don’t even Need to get to the squirrels it’s quite Rewarding to them to do that and what You need to do is build so much value For your voice and you know paying Attention to you that now i mean Certainly you have to have a leash on But you have an opportunity to uh Overcome that challenge so remember if You don’t have your dog if you can’t Control your dog you’re setting yourself Up to lose because what are you gonna do If it doesn’t go right you know we have To get past the idea that our dog’s Always unleashed we have to get past the Idea of always holding food we don’t Want that what we want is for the dog to Understand that listening brings value And the best way to do that is to Control the outcome no matter where you Are An important part of this is timing this Is the next step so we’re talking about Setting the right foundation and to set The right foundation you have to have Good timing that’s an important part of Your dog training Let’s talk about how quickly people come But become dependent on food when if They have bad timing yes and how How uh how much it can slow down their Training yeah this is an important thing To talk about because if you follow
Our channel you’ll notice that when We’re teaching new things we do use a Lot of food rewards in our training um But what’s really important that you Understand is we do that to initially Start the training because we’re trying To Build excitement and value and drive Using something that we know the dog Likes we also could use a toy in place Of a food in place of food it doesn’t Need to be food specifically but it Needs to be something that our dog wants So they learn i want that and it’s like Okay you want this well you got to do You got to work for me in order to earn It and that’s how we sort of build that Working relationship however our goal For later on down the road is that i Don’t want to have to need to You know wiggle a toy in my dog’s face Or show them food or even eventually Have a leash on my dog i need my dog to Learn that listening to me is is the Better thing so where timing comes into Play here is that it’s really important That as your dog starts to understand Their learning that we don’t end up Advertising to the dog that we have the Food or we have the toy or we have these Things before we give our dog some type Of command so you know if i wanted ken To do something for me in before i even Asked i like pulled out a hundred dollar
Bill and then i said hey ken can you You know Go cut the lawn one strand at a time With a pair of scissors You would consider it because she’s like Well she’s got the hundred dollar build There so whatever so same thing with the Dog if i pull the food out and i’m Advertising that i have food and then i Say can you sit can you down can you do This well the dog’s gonna say of course I can i can see the foods there then When the food’s not present anymore and I say can you sit her down the dog’s Gonna say What are you gonna give me what are you Gonna give me for that so the way around That is when we teach dogs new things we Have really uh specific timing where we First give the cue Then so we felt we use um the process of Q stimulus reward so q would be sit for Example we’ll do something super simple Sit the stimulus would be something that Gets the dog to sit so i would say the Cue Then i would show the dog some food lure Them into position maybe to help them Out and then i would reward if i give my Cue Before i show my reward or my bribe or My lure or whatever If i keep that timing in the right order I will have a dog that understands when
You say sit i need to move into this Position so that i can get a reward but What a lot of people do is they do the Stimulus first they show the dog what They want the dog to do it for first and Then they give the cue and that’s where The timing can really get mixed up and This goes i was using sit as just an Easy way for you to understand But this is often mixed up for walking This is mixed up for um Recalls lots of times you know when dogs Don’t come in how many times have maybe You’ve done this yourself you see people Shake the cookie bin or shake the cookie The cookie bag and then the dog says oh You’re gonna feed me of course i’ll Listen right so it’s really important That you have somebody shaking a cookie Bag i’m probably running towards them Why would you not why would you not i Can’t help it exactly so it is important That you do have good timing and the Other thing to keep in mind is that Dogs learn within one second so when we Give the dog some type of cue or command We need to make sure that we’re Following it with some type of helpful Guidance in the early stages of training Within one second of doing so so if i Call my dog to come for example and i Let 5 or 10 seconds go by and then i Start Start uh wagging my toy around or
Whatever it might be well the dog’s not Gonna pair that together they they need It to happen at the same time um they Need to have it one after another i mean To say the next point i was going to Make is if also you do it at the same Time so if i’m calling my dog to me or If i’m asking my dog to sit and at the Same time i have food on the dog’s nose Or i’m helping them out well the dog’s Not going to be listening to what you’re Saying they’re solely focused on the Fact that you have food there so a lot Of people say well i don’t want to use Food in my training because my dog will Be dependent on it well they will if you Use it the wrong way if you use it the Right way you’re going to have a dog That totally understands how to listen And they like listening because they’re Associating with something that’s fun And valuable and rewarding but your Timing has to be right in order for you To get the results that you’re looking For kentucky travelers uh boy i hope i’m Right on that um it says and i use yes Now too as a reward and actually that’s What we’re trying to build is we’re Trying to build yeah that’s the uh what We want is for the dog to hear that word And feel like it uh they you know feel The same way as when they’re getting a Treat reward now i know a lot of people In fact 33 percent of our audience
Tonight is feeling like jumping up is The biggest problem so they might be Thinking that okay well i get it kind of For a response name or a recall but what About jumping up like what am i using For food in that situation and this is Where timing can make a world of Difference in your jumping up training Maybe we talk about uh The uh training target a little bit and Then when you need to reward yeah i mean We could go over to the train station i Suppose for that but you know i think Here we can probably deliver that Information as well um yeah so The thing with jumping up and with the Timing that we’re talking about Is jumping up just by itself is a really Self-rewarding behavior so the thing That’s sort of crappy about jumping up Is that if your timing is not very good Um you’re slow to react about the dog’s Jumping It’s almost a double whammy because not Only are they rehearsing abort a poor Behavior but on top of that they’re Doing something that’s really fun and Rewarding for them now we don’t think It’s fun to be jumped on or have them Jump on other people but when they get To jump up and get a reaction from Somebody or another dog or whatever it Is that’s really fun and rewarding for Them so you don’t need to be giving them
Any treats for that they internally Think that’s a lot of fun and that’s why This one can be such a hard one to fix Because a lot of time people’s timing Are too late and the dog actually gets To successfully jump on somebody before They’re being um given any information So in a lot of cases when we’re trying To fix an unwanted behavior you can do So by replacing it with a wanted Behavior something you would prefer your Dog to do instead and often what we’ll Do is teach the dogs to sit in place of Jumping up now a lot of times that Sounds easy But if you have somebody that’s close to You and you have a very Outgoing friendly dog sitting is just Not Not what they want to be doing so being Able to be far enough from um That distraction or that person that my Dog wants to visit that my dog actually Can have enough emotional control to Hold that sit and allow me to reward on A loose leash is going to be a little Bit easier than if somebody’s really Close so the closer you get to a person The harder it is to get your dog not to Jump until of course they know the Exercise um so distance is going to be Your friend the other thing that’s going To be really important is that you need To make sure that you’re working to sit
Before your dog has a chance to jump up On someone so if your dog jumps up on Someone and then you’re like oh i need To work a sit and then you get the dog To sit that’s like putting a band-aid on It it helps in the moment but it won’t Stop the dog from jumping the next time Because they were able to successfully Jump so if you want to fix your jumping Problem you must stop the dog from Jumping in the first place they cannot Successfully land their paws on someone If that’s happening your timing is too Late you’re too slow giving your dogs The information so you need to adapt the Situation to make it easier for you to Have great timing moving further away Having the dog sit Using high value treats whatever it Might be it’s important that you’re Giving good timing so you’re not you Know moving two steps forward and then Five steps back sometimes the hardest Part of this and and we’ve had to talk To you know coach people in the past When we’ve been out and about um Especially with a dog in training the Hardest part of this often is when you You’re out for something you’re training Or doing something with your dog and Then somebody comes up and they’re like Oh i don’t i love puppy i don’t care let Them jump up i don’t mind at all and You’re you have to coach those other
People to say oh give me a second Actually and you know if people really Love dogs you could say oh actually you Know what uh i’m gonna work on a sit i’m In the middle of training could you help Me and people will be like absolutely I’ll help you hopefully they don’t come In you know hands up high and scary and Whatever for the squeaking yeah Squeaking and squawking but um you know A big part of that is coaching the other People like hey give me a second and Actually we have a video on the channel And actually before i forget dan Uh dan lots of links luton someone Needed the biggest mistake Uh In treat training video i can’t remember Who it was i saw it go through the chat Um but some it would be really helpful For someone who is saying my dog is Great when i have treats in my hand They are terrible when i don’t have Treats that video will be for them so The biggest mistake people make with Street training But coaching other people to help you Through the process and maybe that means Getting a family member getting getting A friend um you know getting a work Colleague somebody to help you with this Is going to be really helpful now the Thing you must be attentive to is your Dog so you start a little coaching with
The other person but whatever you do Don’t pay attention to them while you’re Working on this exercise because so Often people will be like okay my dog’s Going to sit like okay why don’t you get And then the dog moves you need to be Eyes they’re slow absolutely eyes on Your dog so that you can reward that Moment and you’re gonna get it if you’re Working hard enough you’re gonna get That moment where the dog looks and They’re like and then they check in with You if you can capture that moment that They made a great choice You are off to the races it makes a huge Difference because now you’re teaching Them uh you know to make better choices You know you didn’t ask for that sit They looked at something else and then Checked back in with you now that idea Of checking in with you looking for Guidance and direction is very very Helpful in your training and you’re Going to start to meet see them make Better choices more often And man oh man when you start to see That you know you’re on the right track You know it’s Pretty gratifying for me as a dog Trainer seeing people’s relationships Develop with their dogs and i would have Never thought years ago long before i Was a dog trainer that that would be a Very impactful thing in my life you know
I’ve been a firefighter for Almost 25 years now and it’s a Gratifying job but i’ll tell you there Are some days that we’re training dogs Training people to train their dogs that Are just as gratifying literally it Literally changes their life absolutely Because when you have a dog that’s Unruly and driving you crazy and just Making life really frustrating because They’re so ill-behaved it it changes how You feel about the dog it’s it’s Annoying to take them for a walk it’s Annoying to do all these things yeah but Then when your relationship changes Changes with the dog and you start to Learn how to get them to do things for You and then they start to want to do Stuff for you it’s like now the dog just Becomes so much more pleasurable which Means life is more pleasurable and then That means you can take your dog on you Know take your dog and stuff i think my Favorite thing that we get tagged on Like on instagram and stuff like that is Like when people are like out doing Stuff actually we have this like really Cool thing that we do in our life skills Programs and our uh puppy essentials Life skills you say and um it’s called Um Wednesday wins and so every wednesday The students are uh are you know very Encouraged to post something awesome
That happened that week with their dog And uh this week we actually have a Student that does um i don’t know the The proper like Um The proper title for it but she does um Like torturing pole dancing but like um I don’t know what with the like dancing With the pole i think that’s full dance Yeah anyways but she’s like Unbelievable at it like she’s like i Don’t know she looks like a like Spiderman she’s amazing um but she sent Us like a before and after video so when She first uh started the program with Her young i think it’s an aussie puppy It she was hanging off this pole the Puppy’s like jumping up and trying to Bite her hair and like grabbing things And we’re just being horrible and then She’s been in the program for a few Weeks now she sent us a video this Wednesday and the dog is literally lying On the dog bed Sleeping basically and she’s like Practicing and doing her thing and the Puppy’s just laying there like a perfect Angel and she’s like i want to be able To bring my puppy to do the thing that i Love i don’t want to have to leave the Puppy at home i want to be able to take The dog and i was like yes yeah the goal Here is to train the dog so that your Dog can be incorporated into your life
That might be a very unique suggestion For a lot of you guys but the story the Storyline is really important we want You to be able to have a well-behaved Dog so you can take them places and Incorporate them into your life and Enjoy them That’s it you know and that’s what i Didn’t see at first is that i thought Dog training was about going through the Motions and going through the reps and Teaching your dog to walk in heel Position what i didn’t realize until a Few lessons in was that it’s about being Able to go on walks where your dog isn’t Dragging you you know can you imagine Your dog not jumping up when family Comes in the house can you imagine what That you know for me i had to take my Dog to the fire hall uh you know when i Was on shift because we had 24-hour Shifts and i i couldn’t have a wild and Crazy barking You know wild dog and i needed to be Able to i needed to accomplish those Things yeah i also needed her to not Jump up on people i needed her to not You know um I needed All of those applications every single Thing that we worked on in grade one Yeah that we do in life skills i needed All of those things i just didn’t Realize it yet yeah
Because dog training is about Accomplishing that goal it’s about going For longer walks it’s about going to the Park and not getting dragged there Mm-hmm uh mary did you give me marriage I didn’t but i’m gonna toot for mary h Thank you for the super sticker mary Turning the lights blue I know that um three kentucky travelers Yeah i think he gave us One second was it right here Yeah So three kentucky travelers uh food Motivated until around other dogs Overexcited at seeing other dogs i also Noticed that my face is now an emoji if You’re a heart dog supporter what yeah I mean good or bad it’s there I lost track of it it’s there somewhere I saw it and i i didn’t realize that was The thing also all of the dogs oh there It is all of the dogs are also uh emojis Yeah That’s cool okay uh food motivated until Around other dogs over excited at seeing Other dogs yep this can be a challenging Thing so that means that your dog finds The other dogs more valuable than the Food that you have so A simple suggestion would be to use Higher value food use something that Your dog really Really likes and i don’t i’m not talking Like kibble and you know things like
That oh there’s all kinds of them it’s Amazing Um it’s it’s something that’s like extra Special that your dog wouldn’t get on a Normal basis the other thing that Sometimes can be helpful is to um use The food around more distractions when Your dog is hungry so go out at Breakfast time go out at dinner time Where your dog’s already wanting the Food that can be really helpful yeah and Then last but not least you need to find That threshold that that that distance This is so cute that your dog is able to Choose the food over the over the dog so If your dog’s saying that’s that’s too Exciting i’m not interested in what you Have for me it means at this point in Your training you’re too close to the Distraction um because the dog’s not Able to make a good choice i love this So let’s look at this from the three uh The three steps to solving some of these Problem behaviors because we’re going to Talk about consistency and why that’s Important in just a minute which is our Third step but foundation and fairness What’s the foundation for this skill What does that look like in this Situation i wasn’t paying attention so You’re going to have to answer the Question oh so the foundation furnace For this the specific skill I wasn’t listening oh okay well i don’t
Even know what school you’re talking About that you’re talking about you’re Answering right now oh i’m sorry i got Distracted by the all of the emojis i Know i was looking i was like oh there’s Like even one for five alive in there i Know i know okay i’m sorry so the Foundation for this specific skill we’re Over excited around uh when they’re Around other dogs what would the Foundation behavior look like um it Might look like you know using a Response a name it might look like using A controlled sit at your side Um it might work uh look like working on A look at me exercise so your dog is Able to to look on a command because They associate that with getting a Reward for some dogs putting just Putting food on their nose isn’t quite Enough you want to fall back on some of The skills that um that you’ve worked on In a lower distracting environment in Something that’s a bit you know a bit More exciting However finding that distance is really Going to be what the game changer is Because you know for some dogs you could Put a stake in front of their face and If they really just want that other Thing more than what you have you’re the Only other option you have is to remove The dog from the scenario so that you Can get to a distraction level that the
Dog can choose you so you can then Reinforce and then you just move Yourself a little bit closer to uh to Where your goal is and sometimes that Takes time for some jobs and i mean as You’re training your dog it sounds like You guys are pretty invested in training Your dog you’re gonna start to see we’re Gonna talk about timing next so there’s A foundation next is timing you’re going To start to see some of those signals That your dog is about to leave you They’re about to go and you know pull at The end of the leash to get to those Other dogs well what does rewarding look Like before they reach that threshold And i’m not talking about stuffing food On their nose so they don’t leave i’m Talking about rewarding the moments Before they choose to leave so then all Of a sudden their brain goes from oh There’s an opportunity to maybe get over There and see those other dogs to like It’s a sure thing i get something Rewarding if i remain in at my owner’s Side that timing is so important here And i i love how kale covered it a few Moments ago where you know it’s not it’s Not about the donkey carrot thing it’s About like rewarding with great timing And in this specific instance it’s about Choosing the moments before your dog Makes that choice the next step Foundation’s one timing’s number two the
Next step that you need to solve your Behavior challenging Behavioral issues uh Consistency you have to be consistent i Know so many people struggle with this And i find it so frustrating sometimes Because That was me I would go out and i would allow my dog To drag me half the way around the block And then she’d walk great the other half But that’s not fair to your dog so we we It’s also just not good information Terrible information yeah so so you know Dogs let’s talk about white dog it’s so Important to give dogs black and white Information yeah you do need to be very Black and white because that’s that’s The type of communication that they Understand best that’s Literally how they communicate with each Other there’s no like um maybe could you You know don’t worry about it now dogs Are just like boom boom this is what i Need this is not like that’s just how They’re used to being and so then when We have us humans trying to communicate With them and then we’re like sometimes You’re not allowed to do this and you Know you’re barking and i’m gonna sh Good boy quiet quiet good boy we’re just Giving them such confusing information That the dogs go oh you like it when i Bark you pet me and you tell me like
Good boy good boy i am a good boy for Barking so it can be so confusing so we Want to make sure that we are giving Clear information and that consistency Aspect is is a hard one for people Because i think what ends up happening a Lot is instead of choosing the dog Training people end up just going Through with whatever they’re trying to Do in their life um it could be you know Maybe you need to like take your dog out To the car for example and they’re Dragging you And you want to get to the car but Instead of just like dealing with the Leash pulling you’re like uh well i Really need to get to the car so like Whatever i’m just gonna go or you know You’re carrying things in your hand and Your dog’s on the leash and they start To pull and it’s like okay well it’s Much easier just to like drop the leash Or to just let them pull me to the to The door because i have my hands full um But what a dog trainer would do is they Would drop the stuff in their hands and They would deal with the dog right then And there to say you know what not okay This is what you need to do differently And then go from there so you need to be Consistent your dogs the information That you give your dog needs to override Just the convenience of your life and a Lot of people are not prepared to do
That yeah and it’s so important in fact I saw a um i saw an interesting question Come in uh from gerdberg Ah great name by the way um and i want To mention this because we can talk About leash walking and talk about all These three things uh gerdberg says dogs Need to know when to walk Yes fun saying it that way when to walk And when to sniff now i like this and Some people might say like oh well you Know my my walks are for my dog but i Want you to think about it this way we Actually teach three styles of walking One is uh in a heel position the other One is leash respect or with me and then One’s dragging a long line and will Actually which eventually leads to off Leash yeah which becomes all of these Start you start to work towards off Leash um that’s the focus always for for Us we want to get you past the food pass The leash all the mccann methods we Wouldn’t walk a dog off leash like on Like a sidewalk or something no but the Ability that you could do that yeah you Could if you wanted to we wouldn’t Recommend that but you want to be able To take your dog on a hike or let the Dog out of the car at the park and have Your dog not take off on you right you Know that that’s what we’re looking for The ultimate verbal control yeah you do Not need the leash for your dog to stay
With you your dog loves to stay with you So uh the foundation for your leash Walking is like great walking at your Side you know your dog you’re rewarding Your dog in position they’re doing a Really amazing amazing job and then you Get to a point where maybe Maybe they need to pee you know maybe Your dog needs to uh you know have a Poop maybe that’s why you Were out there going for a walk they’re Probably going to pull on leash or you Know they’re likely not going to be able To maintain that great position at your Side so you tell them okay with me this Way and now you have the ability to have Your dog kind of orbit around you should You want it that they don’t have to Remain in position they just can’t pull On the leash and that’s when they can go Have a sniff and your timing choosing The right time to allow your dog out of That formal position which is a Let’s be honest How how often are you actually going to Walk with your dog in at your left hand Side or right whatever side you choose i Don’t care but in that like super formal Position it’s actually not that much It’s a very handy skill in a busy Location but what you really want is a Leash respect skill like you know that We teach where your dog just isn’t Pulling on leash they can be anywhere
Around you but During your the course of your walk Walking training maybe that Formal training that uh you know let’s Go we call it heel walking is uh 15 of it and maybe a much larger Percentage is least respect and then you Maybe you get somewhere that you know Your dog can drag their line you can Play tug or whatever whatever the thing Is but it’s on your terms you know i do Believe that you will your dog will Learn faster if it’s not half them Sniffing half you walking training you Know focus make those make those you Know 35 steps brilliant make them Brilliant and very rewarding for your Dog and then allow them some freedom Then they’re on their time you know they Can move around and do their thing they Just can’t pull on the leash but it’s Black and white information and that’s Consistency i’m not talking about always Walking in a tight heel position it’s Unreasonable especially when you have a Dog in training it’s It’s not that um useful really but You’re consistent about the fact that When you ask for it you’re gonna reward It you’re gonna be working on it you’re Gonna make it fun and then you’re Consistent about the fact that they can Also have a little time to cruise around And do their own thing
So talking about these elements is you Know i hope it’s starting to kind of Come together for you drop yes in the Chat if you feel like okay i’m starting To get it and also if there’s one Specific skill that you have that you’re Still like geez i’m not sure how to Apply foundation timing and consistency To that let us know in the chat i wanted To just to talk about consistency with Jumping up because i know that was a Popular thing so um Kind of re to reiterate what i said Before you know consistency with jumping Up means you know if you can’t be Consistent and if you’re not prepared to Deal with the jumping up don’t put your Pup don’t put your puppy or your dog in That scenario in the first place So you know if we have people coming Over we have like imagine we have a Five-month-old puppy and he Loves people loves people which is great But if i’m not prepared to work through Him not rehearsing jumping on people He’s in the crate when people come into The house so that i don’t have to worry About him you know getting to the person Before me and i’m not ready to you know Work through teaching him not to jump um Or i have a leash on i have some treats Ready or i have them you know working on Your bed or i’m i’m ready and prepared To be consistent and if he does make a
Mistake to jump on people which he does Because he’s a puppy absolutely i can Work through that and what we don’t want To do is you know work the set and then The dog’s up two seconds later we work The set the dog’s up two seconds later And then people go oh this isn’t working Or i’m just frustrated and they just let The dog do its own thing well that’s Inconsistency if you follow through Enough times that your dog says i’m just Not getting away with that choice but When i’m when i sit here and i hold a Loose leash and i’m attentive i get Rewarded then the dog starts the light Bulb starts to go on and they go oh This is the better choice but i’m only Going to achieve that if i have good Timing i want to put the dog back like i Said before i was talking about earlier And if i’m consistent about it if i Don’t have follow-through and Consistency i’m not going to affect Change and there’s nothing wrong With avoiding the situation altogether If it’s not the right moment for you to Actually have your dog training hat on And give the dog good good information Especially for something like jumping up You know if you’re gonna walk your dog Down to pick your kid up from school and There’s kids and dogs and people Everywhere and your dog is going to like Want to be jumping up all over everyone
Don’t take your dog don’t take your dog At this point eventually that can be a Goal but go for a walk down to the School Not when school’s being let out like you Know on sunday when there’s no one there And go and train the dog to walk around That area and you know sit on a loose Leash and then maybe go and there’s a Couple people and then work your way up To like school time but too often we’re Putting the dog in a scenario where it’s So hard for us to be consistent because We’re focused on doing something else we Drop that consistency and the dog goes Oh there’s multiple sets of rules i Don’t have to listen now i don’t need to Do this thing this is rewarding i can Just get away with stuff so you have to You have to be consistent it’s crucial And you know we’re in the business of Training people uh i mean training dogs Is the easy part but we know that there Are going to be times when you’re like I’m over it i’ve just had enough i you Know i’ve had a rough day or the kids Are driving me crazy or the puppy or the Dog is driving me totally bonkers and Now is not the time for training so You’re not going to put your dog in a Situation where they could fail Maybe i remember days you know i would Work i used to work like full-time fire And part-time at work as a paramedic so
You know i’d be working like 36 hours or Something and then i come home and i was Tired and i didn’t i i all i could do Was Play tug with deacon throw a ball for Deegan but she was still in training so I wouldn’t attempt to go take her for a Walk like practice my leash walking Training yeah uh you know i wouldn’t try To do anything that required any mental Acuity of any kind because i know it’s I’m just setting Us up for failure the biggest thing we Want is we want your dog to love Learning and we that’s what we do we Teach the dogs how to be motivated to Listen yeah and understanding that you Know when it’s in you and how to apply That to your dog training so that it’s In your dog as well is really really Helpful Mentioning um What essentials yeah puppy essentials uh I we just had a someone register gisele Smith i registered for pup essentials With grommet that she welcomed home Yesterday welcome home grandma awesome Very cool But we i mean we have people from all Over the world in our online training And i’ll tell you the thing that i found So remarkable again terrible geography Student is that people Here in ontario canada have the same
Challenges as people in Saudi arabia denmark as in denmark as in Australia as in maybe everywhere Everywhere we we all have the same dog Training challenges so understanding the Why behind what you’re doing with your Skills training Is is really really helpful and um You’re not alone you know there are lots Of people going through this with you It’s all about you Being tactical you know if you fail the Plan you plan to fail and i want you to Have a plan with all of these training Exercises now i know that there were a Couple people that had mentioned uh uh Specific skills i’m gonna grab a couple Of these i think uh and i know a lot of People are struggling with barking You know they’re struggling with their Barking training we actually have a Really great video uh that instructor Carol i think we made we made his Instructor carol that is uh yep the Different types of barking and why they Bark absolutely But um Uh what was the other thing i had here Yeah so another thing i just noticed in The chat here is that someone said you How they use their voice How they use their voice gets better Attention from their dogs and you’ll see On our channel uh a lot of times uh kale
Is like squeaky and bubbly and right Away Yeah we get pictures from from people uh On instagram or you know from our groups That um that they’re like oh yeah as Soon as i put on the dogs video with Kale my puppy was like was glued to the Tv and uh it doesn’t need to be so funny It doesn’t need to be bubbly it needs to Be something it needs to connect Energetic and enthusiastic and genuine And absolutely yeah it has to be genuine And i love that especially when we’re Talking about leash walking training That was a that was a really important Realization for me i can’t squeak in you Know i can’t be that bubbly but when i Truly was happy with the results that i Was getting out good girl way to go Buddy you know that um tone that you Have really can connect to your dog Connect you to your dog and allow you to Be successful so think you know i want You to be mindful of that as well you Know what What am i trying to um How am i going to connect with my dog in Situations where i can’t have food on Their nose the entire time in between my Rewards use your voice to stay connected With your dog that’s a great way to set The foundation it allows you to have it Allows you for some breathing room with Your timing it gives you a little bit
More opportunity to make mistakes be a Little bit late um and certainly it Allows you to be more consistent because Your dog’s like wow this is so much fun As we do our walking training This must be the the student that sits With us i’m in grade 1 right now she’s Like i have sat beside kale and it’s True i have a fun problem video yourself You will be surprised She leaned over to me the other day and She’s like i think i have a fun problem And i was like what are you talking About she’s like i am not fun enough i Was like you can be fun enough i think You’ll be fine uh that’s so funny and Here’s the thing you you start to Realize it yourself you know when you Start when things start clicking and You’re like okay i’m going to Intentionally Get the moment when you know i’m having Fun with this and it gets a little bit Easier uh but Again it’s not you don’t have to be Squeaky you don’t have to be fine you Don’t have to be bubbly you just have to Connect with your dog yeah it does make A huge difference in your dog’s Attention and you know we want the Training to be fun we want your dog to You we want your dog our method of Training is not about like you know Drill sergeant like obedience you know
Heal all that kind of stuff you will not See us doing that with our dogs um it’s About working together as a team and Building your dog to be Motivated to work for you we want tails Up we want ears up we want dogs that say I love doing this and a lot of that Means we gotta work our butts off yeah To uh to you know to put in the energy To get to get that result from our dogs Absolutely so when you’re approaching Any of these challenging nuisance Behaviors in your training i want you to Focus on first thing foundation what Does your dog know what have you taught Your dog that That you can expect of them from them And is it fair are you putting your dog In a fair situation where they can be Successful the timing are you practicing Good timing are you sure that you’re Giving your dog good information before They can make a mistake are you giving Your dog great information when they Make the right choice because those Moments in your training are going to Change everything and consistency the Biggest struggle i think most dog owners Have is they are horribly inconsistent Because they’re so focused on okay we i Need to go for a block i need to walk Around the block or i need to walk to The park and it’s not about i need Brilliant walking from my dog
Uh for i don’t know Three minutes or whatever that whatever That amount of time is i want the i Don’t want the uh the goal line to be Getting somewhere i want it to be great Walking The performance based is so important Now with that said i want to thank all You guys for joining us our moderators Tonight brilliant as usual i mean i Don’t expect anything less but dan the Moderator man instructor alexis Instructor robbie and all of you that Have joined us here tonight i want to Welcome all the new heart dog supporters And uh thanks dan for uh and some of the Yeah yeah we’re gonna get to to meet you Guys that we have um live uh zoom calls Every monday with our puppy essentials And our life skills students so i’m Looking forward to meeting some of our New faces and don’t forget for the next 24 hours mccann dogs store if you enter Train ticket in the coupon code 15 off Of our bait pouches and our leashes and With all of the teaching all of the Training all of the things that we’ve Done tonight the rest of my friends well That is up to you We do these live streams to educate you But more importantly to motivate you you Can have the dog that you’ve always Wanted but it’s just going to take you a Little bit of work
