Sometimes it may feel as though you brought home Cujo instead of Lassie! The good news is that, with just a bit of basic training, your dog can become better behaved within just a short amount of time.
Crate train your puppy in small steps, so that the training is most effective. Once they have grown accustomed to being in the crate with the gate open, try closing the gate and feeding them small treats through the crate. At first, leave the dog enclosed in the crate for only short periods of time, such as 10 seconds, and then gradually increase the duration. If the puppy becomes upset, you may be progressing too quickly.
Be patient when teaching your dog, it will take some time. It may take 25-50 tries before your dog understands a command consistently and thoroughly. Using the exact same command and remain patient with them so that they can get it.
Try to mistakenly avoid reinforcing any behaviors that are unwanted when doing canine training. Never give your dog any treats or special attention for doing bad things. For instance, if your dog does not sit when commanded, do not rub his head affectionately unless he actually sits.
The first step of training your pooch should be to assert your control. Your dog must understand that you’re in control, so that he knows to obey and respect you. In practice, this means that you should walk ahead when walking your dog, for instance, rather than allowing him or her to take the lead.
Treats are necessary when teaching a dog fancy tricks like rolling over. First, make your dog lay down. Then, use the treat to draw his head from one side to the other. Ideally, your dog will use his nose to follow the treat, rolling his whole body in the process. Say “roll over” as you perform the maneuver. Have patience since your dog may not get the trick quickly. However, once he does, he’ll be the center of attention at the dog park.
Pay attention to the length of your training your dog sessions. It is possible that your dog will lose interest if it is made to do the same thing over and over. Keep first training lessons to 10 minutes or less.
Your dog needs to learn what the word “no” means. Find some positive ways to enforce training when you train your dog. Saying ‘no’ does not teach your dog how to react. No two animals and trainers are alike, so choose an approach that meets both your needs.
Firm, direct commands are the best approach to take when training your dog. However, that doesn’t mean yelling at your dog. Be loving while maintaining your authority. This will help you develop a strong bond with your dog.
If you pour too much information and training into your puppy, it will actually be counterproductive. Keep your training sessions short and sweet, this will help your puppy be more focused. If you try too hard to train the puppy, he will probably just forget what you have taught him and will see the experience as bad. This will make it more difficult to train the puppy at a later time.
Be aware of the other dogs when taking yours for a walk. Certain dogs have an aggressive streak – don’t be under the assumption that the owner has taken the time to train them. If you see a dog that seems to be that way you should always steer clear, especially if you have your pet.
If you desire to leash train your dog, the first thing that you must do is to use a collar on him while you’re playing with him. By making your puppy comfortable to wearing a leash, he will be more apt to keep it on.
One way to help discipline your dog’s bad behavior is to use a water bottle. Your dog will quickly learn that what he is doing is not acceptable. In short order, the dog is sure to cease such behavior, and assume the role of fun, yet obedient animal.
You should do some research on the grooming of the dog breed you chose. Certain breeds require minimal upkeep, whereas other breeds need lots of grooming attention week in and week out. A dog who is properly cleaned and groomed is protected against sickness and is more comfortable and easygoing.
Give challenges to your dog regularly. Try giving them “quizzes” to see what they know, even if you know they will succeed.
Consistency is important during your training your dog. Keep the commands simple to understand so that everyone can use them consistenly with your dog. Everyone must be commanding and responding to the dog in the same way for training to be successful. Different cues from different people will confuse your dog.
